Let's face it: in the end, most of the videos on this channel are pretty similar. I am perhaps not completely innocent of this, but the devices I test here also have a large share in this. But there has always been a smartphone series that stands out here - and this from the most mainstream of all mainstream manufacturers. We're talking about the Samsung Galaxy Xcover series! Find out now whether the sixth generation of the smartphone can still surprise you! To put it in perspective: the predecessor 4s is now 1.5 years old. The better Xcover Pro almost a year. If you ignore the latter, the Xcover 5 looks like a quantum leap.
No more physical buttons at the bottom of the display. (For the younger audience: there were times when not everything was controlled via the touchscreen). And of course the carefully reduced display bezels. But one thing has stayed the same: the smartphone is still relatively compact. The size here is almost identical, the weight even completely the same as that of the predecessor.
Nevertheless, the display could be carefully enlarged. If you use swiping gestures, you can even benefit from the larger display in the long term! If you like it bigger, you have to go for the Xcover Pro. They also remain true to themselves when it comes to the design language. One relies on roughened plastic on the back. And anyone who, like Bear Grylls, got long fingernails after several weeks in the forest can even claw at the edge here and will not drop the device at all.
And even if it is, the Xcover 5 is well protected against falls. The frame is also placed over the display to protect the Gorilla Glass 6, which is already more robust. The buttons are almost a bit under on the frame. You might think that these are design elements. But you are happy about these clear pressure points and everything is bombproof in the device.
On the other side there is a so-called Xcover button. We'll get to that later. Otherwise, the smartphone still offers 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage of which 46.8GB are free. These can be expanded via microSD and there is even space for two SIM cards. But where should all of this hide? Under the hood! If you remove this back, the technology of the smartphone comes to light.
Two more nanoSIM cards fit in here, while a microSD card can also be accommodated here. Otherwise you can see the 3000 mAh battery here. This makes it a little bigger than its predecessor - but the battery life has become a little shorter. This means that the larger battery cannot compensate for the larger display. In addition, the battery should be kept away from dogs.
Let's close the back here again. In any case, you should get through the day with the battery. Otherwise you can of course also swap the battery. And if you don't spend your nights in the forest without electricity like Bear Grylls, you can charge your smartphone down here using 15 watt fast charge or using two pogo pins. You have to buy a dock for this separately.
This is very popular in corporate use when many devices are charged at the same time. Otherwise you have a mono speaker below. Above we can see a 3.5 mm connection for your headphones. Also a microphone. Otherwise, the smartphone is of course IP68 certified, i.
e. protected against the ingress of dust and water. Also tested to US military standard MIL-810H. Loyal viewers of the Xcover community will have noticed that this standard has been updated from G to H. Everything can be read in a 1000-page PDF.
Otherwise, the Xcover 5 still offers Google Pay via NFC, WLAN ac and Bluetooth 5. Samsung also remains true to the colors. Furthermore, the xcover devices are only available in black with a small orange accent on the side. In Germany, the Xcover 5 is again only available as an Enterprise Edition. But people without a company can also benefit.
Samsung promises a full 5 years of regular software updates and thus longer than the already ambitious three years. That is still much longer than with Google's own Android smartphones. Google Android is currently preinstalled with OneUI 3.0. This also runs very smoothly. This is probably also due to the Samsung Exynos 850 processor.
This is also installed in the Samsung Galaxy A21s, among other things. This of course beats the predecessor by length. Compared to the Xcover Pro one can speak of a tie. The display has a diagonal of 5.3 inches and a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels, i. e.
HD +. This means that the pixel density is a little bit higher than that of the Xcover 4s. It can also be operated with gloves and, as with other Xcover devices, a PLS TDT LCD is used instead of AMOLED. This is also quite logical in order to be able to turn the display really brightly in an emergency. In addition, practicality is more important here than bright colors.
You can resolve other emergencies such as darkness with the so-called Xcover button. This allows the flashlight to be switched on and off quickly. This only works when the smartphone is on. You don't have to worry about accidentally triggering the flashlight. This can also be configured in the settings in the menu "extended functions" and "Xcover button".
There are two options here: "Press" and "Press and Hold". Here the flashlight is activated with "press" and with "press and hold" the camera opens. There is no fingerprint sensor. The smartphone can either be blocked with a normal PIN. But also via a pattern or a password.
But it is also possible to unlock with the face. But if you are only alone in the forest anyway, you may be able to do without it completely. Anyone who is out and about outside apparently doesn't need a camera, so at least one lens is enough for Samsung. Even if it sounds a bit illogical, Samsung definitely does not set any priorities for its camera, because there is only one lens on the back, which is why the test here may be a little shorter than usual. You can activate the camera by doubling it on the side.
This offers 16MP aperture with f/1.8, I even suspect a similar cam here as in the predecessor. The aperture has even become smaller, but a bit more digitally can be zoomed with loss. While other smartphones now combine several pixels into one for better pictures, there are no such gimmicks with the Xcover 5. So you really can't change anything up here. The pictures remain in full 16MP.
These are then always used and land directly on the memory. There is little to complain about here. As usual with Samsung, the pictures are colorful and the sharpness is also good. However, I already had a few blurred pictures. So maybe be careful here.
Anyone who previously had a smartphone other than the Xcover 4S may miss the many options that other smartphones offer. If you click on "More", you will only get "Pro", "Panorama" and "Essen". Especially when you see this picture in the dark, you miss a night mode. Otherwise, portraits can also be shot here, but you may already see it, the background blur is really only determined digitally here. In addition, the picture is badly cropped.
Of course, this can also be due to my covid-hairstyle. In addition, this mode is very picky, often no face is recognized at all. You also have to cut corners with the videos. There is really only one setting here, namely Full HD videos with 1980 x 1080 pixels at 30 FPS. There is no slow motion or anything like that.
Of course, a test of the front camera should not be missing. Like its predecessor, it offers 5MP. Possibly the same camera here as on the Xcover 4S. Like many other functions, there is also no autofocus. But hey - this smartphone just wasn't invented for selfies! Samsung is once again providing its target group perfectly with this smartphone.
A device for all craftsmen, construction workers, but also for all those people who quickly have to scan hundreds of tickets at events - when that is possible again. You don't need an amazing camera for this, the 16MP is completely sufficient, and the display should be easy to read in any weather rather than particularly sharp, that is also given here. Anyway, even if the smartphone does fall (into naturally clear) water or simply on the ground - with the Xcover 5, you finally do away with that fearful hoping and praying if you turn the smartphone on the ground briefly to see whether it is still everything is intact. There is also a replaceable battery and a practical button for your own assignment. On the other hand, this line of reasoning makes it pretty easy for yourself if you simply sell missing functions as features for the target group.
In addition, Samsung also charges a decent surcharge, because for more money the hardware is actually worse than the A21s, at least with the camera. If you want to go outdoors, but have slightly higher demands on the display or the camera, and you can't do without a fingerprint sensor, you should perhaps choose the Xcover Pro. Because even in 2021, an Xcover cannot do without compromises. That means here again: think carefully about what you really need and when you need it! If you want to look at the smartphone now, you are welcome to do so. For example with us in Kaufering or Schwabmünchen in Upper Bavaria or Swabia.
You can find the exact addresses on tcs24. de. In addition, we would of course be happy if you subscribed to us on Instagram, liked us on Facebook or subscribed to YouTube and activated the bell.
