iPhone 12 Pro Real World Camera Test: More of the same?

All right, finally, getting around to doing my real world camera test, but this one's going to be a little different. It's with the iPhone 12 Pro and the more that I was using this particular phone. The more I realized it's not radically different from what I'm already used to. So I had to get a little creative with how I could actually get shots with it, where I could go with it and what kinds of videos and photos I could show you to show what the iPhone 12 Pro is capable of. After all, we have yet another version of the iPhone 12 Pro in the pro max that has an even better camera in it and that, of course, I will be doing a real world camera test on as well. But for now it's Joshua verger! What's going on everybody here is a real world camera test with the iPhone 12 Pro yep.

This iPhone 12 well hold on there. You go this iPhone 12 Pro right here in pacific, blue with uh three 12 megapixel cameras on the rear and one 12 megapixel camera on the front which all are capable of 4k video recording, which you know I'm going to be appreciative of, and I'm going to be using most in this particular camera test. So what you're going to see in this video is just a selection of photos and videos from the iPhone 12 Pro. After all, it has been one of my main devices. I tend to have an iPhone on me at all times, because I do use an Apple Watch and that is going to be an important detail that I'll get into a little later.

The thing is, I did go to a couple of destinations, the first one being San Diego, where I took this phone and got some photos and videos with it, so you're, seeing that right now and right off the bat. One of the main things that I can say about the iPhone 12 Pro is that the cameras are of good quality. It's what you would expect from a high-end iPhone device. I might as well keep from burying the lead here, but the iPhone 12 Pro is honestly just really similar to the iPhone 11 Pro in that the quality and the experience are going to be very similar, which is to say it's good quality across the board. The only thing is the iPhone 12 Pro will be, bringing other things to the table compared to what might already be in your pocket, if you're still thinking about whether to upgrade things like 5g and also a better design.

Honestly, I really like where the iPhone 12 has gone with these flat sides. It might still be an iPhone through and through that we're used to, but this ergonomics just gets a little better because of the flat sides makes it easier to handle, even when you are using the cameras to record and take videos and photos now like with most multi-camera setups you're going to want to use the main sensor the most, because it is the one that is best suited for as many situations as possible. It has the lowest aperture. So you get a pretty good shallow depth of field and also because of that very wide aperture it'll be better, or rather best of the three for lower light situations. The telephoto will get you two times zoom, but you can always go past that for digital zoom with diminishing returns, but of course a lot of people will enjoy the wide angle camera because of its wide perspective, it just adds some drama to photos immediately by just widening the field of view.

We have a bunch of different plants here in the backyard my family home here, so we have like avocados and calamari and apples and lemons and limes uh. So yeah something happened here. Let me use the zoom in, so you can see where the break was yep. This is not Santa Ana winds here people. This is probably something ripping the branch off to have a meal.

I'm actually looking around here for like a paw print or something like that, because that would be our proof. But you know what no squirrel, no raccoon, no uh small animal did this. For sure, I mean I think it's pretty obvious. I mean you can see: oh there's one right there. You could see that the fruit has literally been eaten and there's no fruit on this branch anymore.

All picked and cleaned. Well, mostly, the front-facing camera is not going to be as advanced as the three rear, shooters uh, but it's still going to bring some good features, including a portrait mode on the front that we're very much used to good enough quality until you lower the light in the situation and then 4k video recording which, for those of you who are really into social media posting well, that will probably be pretty important for you. So I really struggled with how to make this real world camera test a little different, because, honestly, aside from the design of the phone itself, and maybe just a couple of little incremental improvements in the camera software and in the camera hardware, it was pretty much the same experience as the iPhone 11 Pro, and lord knows. We all know that that phone provides a good shooting experience. But then I realized that a lot of people we know in the tech space actually use iPhones as their backup shooters.

If they need to get b-roll of pretty much anything, they can rely on an iPhone, because video on an iPhone is usually pretty extraordinary. So I realized why don't we just do that? I have a review coming up of the Apple Watch. Se it's been taking me a while to actually get it done, and I realized this is the perfect way for me to actually test an apple product by using it to review yet another apple product. So in using certain tools like a clamp and different mounts and overhead rigs and of course, my tripod, I went ahead and used the iPhone 12 Pro to record the lion's share of the b-roll. For my Apple Watch, SE video you can go ahead and look forward to my Apple Watch, SC video, mostly filmed with the iPhone 12 Pro by subscribing to my channel, if you haven't already, but for now, why don't? We just go through a little of a highlight reel of the different shots that I was able to get with the iPhone 12 Pro in general.

Smartphone. Video is pretty easy to suss out when compared to like mirrorless cameras or even point shoots like a Sony zv1, but with the iPhone the video. It happens to be so good that, as long as you alleviate a couple of the telltale signs of a smartphone video, then you should be able to create some high quality content. The main tip that I have is just lock your focus. Lock your exposure really easy to do by just tapping and holding on your subject.

Uh that way it says eye and AF lock. Don't get me wrong, though the autofocus is actually quite good on the iPhone 12 Pro, especially on the main sensor. As long as you keep the subject pretty much in the center, it will be able to focus on it and keep that focus most of the time. It's the ultra-wide angle lens that doesn't really get this kind of love, mainly because on a wide angle lens, you don't really need stabilization. As much and as with most ultra-wide cameras, it has more of a fixed focus, so it's not going to actually focus or give you that shallow depth of field that the main or even the telephoto lenses provide.

But ultimately I was able to get some good footage using the iPhone 12 Pro for my upcoming Apple Watch. Se's review, as you saw in a couple of those shots. If you have an Apple Watch connected to this iPhone, you can actually use it as a bit of a viewfinder as a bit of a monitoring device. That way you can frame up your shot, hit record and then go nuts. So if you did want to use your iPhone for content kind of like this, you could set up your phone there line up your shot and be able to do videos like you're watching right now, using this particular smartphone.

A quick note on HDR video, all the iPhone 12s are capable of Dolby Vision, HDR recording, which is really awesome. Don't get me wrong! It's nice that this feature is becoming more available to more people and, if you're looking for that kind of footage. Well, then you have them in your smartphone. If you get one of the iPhone 12s, the thing is HDR. Video is not ubiquitous, it's not something that most people are going to be able to enjoy because their monitors or their TVs, don't even support HDR viewing the main people who would benefit from HDR viewing or other iPhone 12 users.

So if you have an iPhone 12 or anything like that, there are some examples of how awesome HDR footage can look they're all over YouTube or all over the internet. So you can look at it there. I personally just decided to keep a more casual look to this, because HDR video can be a bit of a pain to actually edit with I mean one of my biggest pet peeves with iPhones. Is the naming convention of the camera files a picture and then the live photo that was taken with the picture is also a video file on top of all the video files I'm trying to find for the vlog and then another photo portrait photos and all of that they're all named sequentially, which sounds like a good idea, but usually when I get into the editing, I have to sort them out myself, which can be a bit of a pain in the ass, and so there you have it my real world camera test using the iPhone 12 Pro. I am going to put out my full review of this a little later, but the main thing I can say right now after using this for a couple of weeks, is if you have an iPhone 11 Pro right now, there really isn't too much of a reason to go up to the 12 pro unless you really are looking for that HDR recording the software experience is largely the same.

You still have access to all the same resolutions and frame rates, and ultimately you have the same access basically to the high quality that the iPhone 11 Pro already brought to the table. There are simply other reasons why you would upgrade from the 11 pro to the 12 pro, but this is probably the upgrade that would make the most sense to those of you who are still pre 11 line. That way you can jump up to the better cameras to the 5g to the honestly better design like this is still one of my favorite designed iPhones so far, it has the size that I prefer, while still being ergonomically pleasing, but before this becomes an actual review of the iPhone 12 Pro, I'm going to go ahead and call in on this one. Thank you so much for watching. Let me know what you think of all the footage and the photos that you saw in this video in the comment sections down below at the very least drop some likes on this video and subscribe to my channel.

If you haven't already my final complaints and takeaways with the iPhone 12 Pro is still on its way. It should be out pretty soon I'm still working on it, and you can also look forward to my Apple Watch, SE video, which was mostly filmed on this phone right here, but with all that said, let me call it on this one. Thank you so much for watching. Please take care of yourselves and each other, and until my next video I'll just remind you to enjoy your tea everybody, I need a refill.
