TCL 20 Pro (5G) UNBOXING & First Impressions

What's going on everyone, Chris back with another video today we're going to be checking out a first on the channel and that is going to be a phone by TCL. This is the tcl20 pro 5g. This was provided to me by TCL, but they did not pay me. This is going to be my honest review in terms of unboxing and first impressions. So just do keep that in mind now this launched earlier in the year in other regions, but is now finally here in the US. You can pick it up on Amazon for 500.

So let's keep that in mind when we take a look at the device and also the specs um. So it comes in two different colors, blue and a black variant and right here we can take a look at some specs real quick. We have the marine blue, six gigs of ram 256 gigs of storage, so this is currently at the moment. As of this video, a GSM only device, but they do say they are working on an update to be Verizon certified. So it will work on Verizon.

It just needs to be certified by the carrier and that update will be coming later. Don't know when, at this point but anyways inside here we have a 6.6 inch display, which is AMOLED and HDR 10, with a resolution of 1080 by 2400, which is an odd ax. That's an odd aspect ratio to say the least um in the box. Here you got the phone we'll put that aside alrighty, so we have a case like you normally would get from any sort of like mid-range device. Yes, this is a mid-range phone, hence the price of five hundred dollars.

We get a just a clear CPU case, and we have a white charging cable, which is USB type c, to type a nothing fancy there and then our charger, which, let's take a look at the charger itself and in terms of the output, it looks to be an 18 watt, charger alrighty, so unboxing, nothing in terms of a premium unboxing experience, nonetheless, but again 500. So we're not going to mark that off as anything terrible, and then you do have a sim tool in there as well, but right here we're taking a look at the device, so this is already wrapped in kind of like a papery plastic TCL 20 pro display greatness. So that is something they are touting on this device, and that is its display. What they call a next vision in the sense 6.67-inch full HD plus, like I'd already mentioned AMOLED, and it's oh wow. This is a nice blue, um yeah.

I like that blue color, because it has like blue with, like a hint of kind of like a greenish hue to it, depending on the angle that you look at it. This is a matte finish with a gloss kind of two-tone finish here on the back. It is glass and there's no camera bump. That is nice. That is nicely done.

TCO that looks great um. This is a very tall. This is a large phone to say at least you do have curved edges on the screen right there. Let's take a look around the device itself before we kind of get into booting it up and everything else. So at the bottom here it looks like we have a speaker, you're charging port mic and also our sim tray.

This does have expandable storage. If you have a micro SD card, which is awesome left-hand side, we do have this button, which is a textured button here, and up top hey, welcome back early a couple of years ago, headphone jack, that's good, and then we have an IR blaster, which you can control TVs, other appliances, air conditioning things like that and the another noise-canceling mic. We do have your volume button and a very small thin power button there. That's for sure, and then your quad rear camera array already and so basically rear cameras. Let's go over that real, quick before we dive into the phone.

We have a 48, megapixel main sensor right and then that does have is with an f 1.8 aperture. There's a 16 megapixel ultra-wide sensor, with an f 2.4 and there's a two megapixel macro and then also another 2 megapixel depth. Uh sensor in here as well our dual tone flash and right there. It tells you the camera, specs, 48, megapixel, is, etc. , etc.

TCL branding man- I like this back of the there's no real, like finish in terms of like I remember, like an OnePlus device, had a little texture to their glass, but just matte and gloss, so that kind of gives you an idea holding the phone horizontal like Sony devices. You know they have their dedicated power button so the front we do have a front camera here and that is 32 megapixels at f 2.4 um. Now, lets kind of uh take a look inside, shall we so inside. Like I already mentioned six gigs of ram 256 gigs of storage, this runs a snapdragon 750 g processor. So that means it does have an arena 619 GPU.

So the processor is going to do plenty, fine in terms of normal tasks and needing to do what you need to do. Also, some gaming as well. In my opinion, I think a lot of the processors now, even especially on flagships, have become to where we're getting minimal returns on the performance up here that you do have an another little speaker grill. If you can see that, and there is that deep black of ammo led again hdr10 on the peak brightness of 420 nits. So let's check out how that looks in the outdoors, but there is no pre-applied screen protector, so be mindful of that.

When you get the device you might need to get a tempered glass screen protector at the to hold you over or something like that. Just make sure you don't drop it, but the bottom and the top are completely flat right here. Um, as you can see, there's that flatness. But then there is a roundness to the sides right here. It's not sharp or anything, but you can definitely feel a difference in terms of the glass meeting that aluminum frame in the middle, so the aluminum frame doesn't have that same type of curve.

There is a slight curve to it, but you're gonna, you can definitely feel the edge of the aluminum where the glass and aluminum meet so just heads up there, but wow that's large display, and here we can get our first glimpse of the actual bezels and what they look like: they're, not tiny by any means: they're, not Samsung level flagship, but they're, not large, like you might see on kind of like a budget device and then in terms of kind of right now off axis viewing actually not too bad. You can kind of see slightly a slight different color. It kind of looks like a lighter shade of this blue, where the curved screen appears and there is that actual hole punch up at the top, and there is a good amount of bezel around that that camera sensor, so just heads up there. This does, like I said micro SD card support up to 256 gigs. Inside this we have a 4 500 William hour battery, which does support the fast wire charging and also 15 watt wireless charging.

So, yes, we do at least get wireless charging built into this. Now we're going to go ahead and get this connected and set up, unfortunately, for the display it does not have any high refresh uh refresh rate, so it's standard, 60 hertz. Let me go ahead and get set up on this, and we'll kind of go through some software real, quick all right. So as I'm going through this setup here, I can already tell you that this is going to be a fingerprint magnet I can already, even though it is matte finish, you can get an idea and see some of your fingerprints, especially if they're a little oily or greasy and a space basically on this glossy finish part as well. So some interesting first experiences on the setup alone.

We have a fingerprint scanner on the front of the display which unlocks actually quite well. So there is a double tap. There's also face unlock. Let's take a look at that again. So, as you can see here at the bottom, it says device unlocked by face and then during the setup it asks you whether you want to have your dominant hand being right or left, and that arranges where the back button is on the right or left-hand side on the navigation bar and then here is that next vision that they are touting an image enhancer, if you want to have that on or off in terms of uh darkness and sharpness contrast all that video and gaming enhancements for HDR quality- and here are some additional customizations for a home screen style with an app drawer.

Or do you want everything on the home screen? Let's go with traditional android with an app drawer. Do you want a TCL style, or do you want classic, let's go with classic just because that is android, and again I apologize that my iPhone is capturing a lot of these colors in a very warm hue right now so bear with me some user experiences and if there's any sort of actual updates itself, we'll take a look at that in a minute too? So I would say this UI is very familiar to Samsung in the sense of how everything looks now, I'm not going to say that one is better than the other, but nonetheless color mode natural advance. You do have the ability for RGB, so that's awesome, and then you can still make the screen warmer or a cooler, temperature or AMOLED wide gamut, we'll leave that there let's go ahead and take a look at some of these gestures. Let's go with gestures right here, just like android on the newer version right, and we have a power key in terms of being able to quickly open the camera all right. So that's how long at least at the moment I haven't installed any sort of updates how long it took to launch the camera, but already right now, um.

It's very easy to potentially get your finger in the way of the camera, but I will be doing a full review on this. I'm especially deep diving into the camera I'll be going on a trip and using this to take some photos so stay tuned to that subscribe. That way, when I do upload the full review of the tcl20 pro 5g, then you can check that out at that period of time. But this is just initial unboxing and first look so in terms of additional settings. Let's take a look to see if there is an actual system update out of the box.

Okay, so it looks like there is no update, okay, no problem, but let's do take a look about phone all right, so snapdragon 750, like I mentioned um, okay, traditional developer settings all right, so currently in developer mode. It says that's trying to find out where we can find okay, android 11, we're on the march security patch at the moment, so again um. I do know that this device is a part of the android 12 beta. Let me know in the comments, if you'd like me, to make a video on how to install the android 12 beta on the tcl20 pro. I am quite curious, whether and how that works and how stable it is.

Um advanced features, wow, um, there's a game mode, there's one-handed mode. There's a screen recorder, smart apps recommended fingerprint quick launch. So, basically, if you press and hold on the fingerprint scanner- and you can launch additional apps and there's like this little bar over here- if you can see that okay, so it's an it's an added little navigation menu here, so you swipe in from the right and then now we get functions and keep swiping apps contacts a ruler, okay, so we have an inch ruler so up to four and a half inches on the screen, and we have remote. So we can add remote. So this again with the IR blaster, you can quickly control your TV using that swipe in function right here, adding a remote.

You can and then there are settings on sensitivity, tabs positioning and all that. So if you want to make it further down on the side and there you go now, it's much easier to reach and again next division. So they have a dedicated app on the home screen to take you directly to the settings menu for their display settings. That's that's a little funny. Um phone switch an app to contact support if you need to um, oh interesting.

So if you're in a folder on the home screen using the default launcher, you can swipe between folders that you have on your home screen. That's quite interesting! That's actually a nice little touch. There are pre-installed apps Facebook, Netflix booking. com um, a news app smart key, which is going to be this button on the left hand, side that we saw earlier that textured button, so you can set it to do a various thing you can make it launch Google Assistant, for example, or do anything at that point. If you wanted to launch a certain app, you could do that double press long press, that's awesome! There's an optimized app, which is bogus.

You don't need that for android um, there's a lock right here. Okay, so you have a dedicated icon on the home screen to lock the phone. Okay um. Let's take a look at the camera alrighty. So let's go through some the UI of this camera here.

So we got 4x3. Okay looks like we can already have an idea of that. Let's take a look into some settings: video quality, all right, 1080p at 60 frames, so 4k at 30 frames. It can record video stabilization, electronic image, stabilization, AI scene detection, calorie detection, okay, so in sense, if you point this to food, it estimates a calorie of what you're going to eat, um provide best frame guides for portrait shots. Sure we can take a look at that touch of capture, interesting um, so let's not have the shutter sound spirit level.

What is that I don't? Okay, so I like cameras that have kind of the level to let you know if your shot is at 90 degrees, zero degrees and things like that. I like to see that um, it's always helpful and then especially when you're doing it an above shot down uh another level to let you know when you're actually perfectly centered level looking downward. So that's pretty cool. I like that um. So if we do a shot okay, so let's take a look at this again all right, so we have Google home TV remote.

Let's make sure it's not moving. We tap on it interesting, so you tap, it focuses and then takes the shot very simple photo. But at the same point I mean it looks, looks pretty decent to be honest: nice um, that's auto mode. You have a super macro. We have panorama slow motion.

Let's take a look at the slow motion, see what we can shoot in. We have 240 frames a second 120 240. Okay, we can exit out of there video. We can shoot a HDR super anti-shake which switches to 1080p. Basically, that's what it says there.

Oh, it says: 1080p at 30 frames a second to do the ultra anti-shake, okay and let's go to portrait mode. Let's do a quick do a quick selfie and let's take a look to see what this looks like. I'm not sure why it does this right. Did you just see that all right? So now it's the type of color that I like to see, but then it went to this weird, yellow mode boom right there you see it, and then it went away back to the camera. I guess sidetracked it a little, but the portrait mode, not too bad- I mean 500, see.

Why is it doing this? That's annoying. That is definitely a lot of fake both and all of that, that's for sure um. A lot of you can see up here on part of the up here. The part of the structure of the house looks all like weird blurriness, there's a lot of missed detail, a lot of like smudging, with my face and things like that. But I mean we're talking 500, there's a super night mode.

Again it went into this weird yeah. There is a pro mode for photography, so cool. I'm glad that there is that at least um touch capture. Let's turn that off, because I like to tap the focus and then want to then take the shot for it to be able to focus on something right, so I can still increase decrease the brightness level. So let's go ahead and double press that power button all right it launches.

We need to go to more and then let's go to super macro, so you do have to have this like within a certain distance of that focal length for it to be within that focus range right. So you do need to keep that in mind when you are doing when you're doing these macro shots and of course you want to make sure that you have good lighting with within. All of that, too, we have to kind of play around to see where that, like that's the beat that looks to be about it right there too, if you go too close, and we're we're about an inch away from the ring here, and now we're looking at probably about maybe two inches or so um is about right, where okay, well, the develop mode, didn't fix that whole yellow tint that comes up. It could be a bug. I don't know, I will let them I'll.

Let TC know what I'm experiencing here. Maybe they'll fix it, but about two and a half inches away is right where you're gonna need to be for it to properly focus on the super macro mode. But overall I mean the screen looks great. To be honest, I mean what we can do is open up a YouTube video all right. So these are the media controls that you can expect to see notifications.

You can adjust everything right there and then, of course, play pause right there too, alright. So unfortunately, this earpiece up here does not act as a second speaker. It is just bottom firing, so that is fortunate. So do keep that in mind as well, but the buttons on the power, the quick action button over here on the left hand, side feel great they're click. The power button is actually just so thin that it's just it's odd, it's a two-tone, so you have this blue and there's a little of color hint of color right in the middle of the button.

So that's pretty cool, but yeah. These buttons are very thin. Just like the width of the buttons itself, fingerprint scanner is actually quite fast. I'm I'm surprised it is an optical fingerprint scanner. So basically it takes a picture of your your your fingerprint so anyways.

I am going to be using this for a little and give my thoughts and my full review, and it looks like there are some other games, there's already a game here installed, but you see if you can actually uninstall that I'm going all over the place. Yes, you can uninstall it so good, I'm glad that you can at least uninstall pre-installed apps on here. Thank you TCL for allowing that at least, let me know down in the comments what you want to know about the TCL 20 pro 5g. Any questions concern thoughts. I will be answering them and, of course, in my full review, I love the back of this.

I like this kind of like shade that it's kind of moving in between a blue and this kind of like ocean green anyways back to what I was talking about. Hopefully this gives you an idea what the device is first hand. This is a nice large phone. If you are looking for a large screen device which has a beautiful display, I'm actually really surprised by how great it looks. The blacks are, of course, AMOLED, and it gets extremely dim and decently bright, but we'll have to test it out in broad daylight.

Thank you for taking your time and spending time on watching my first impressions and unboxing of the tcl20 pro 5g. That name is a mouthful but stay tuned for a full review. Thank you. All I'll see you on the next video take care.
