Should You Buy ROG Phone 3 instead of OnePlus 8 Pro?

So, what makes for a great flagship? Is it all about having the best hardware underneath the hood, or is there more to the story, I'll try and answer that question in today's video? Hey guys, Omaha here from c4etech and today, I'm comparing the OnePlus 8 pro against the ROG phone 3. So if you do end up finding this video useful, please consider subscribing and turning on notifications by hitting that bell icon. Let's now get started now design wise. We are looking at two very different phones here on one hand, we have the minimal design of the OnePlus 8 pro a beautiful gradient finish on a matte glass back curved keening, gorilla glass 5 to the front, as well as the back slim bezels, with a waterfall OLED display that just screams premium. On the flip side, we have the ROG phone 3. Yes, this 2 is a glass sandwich design with gorilla glass 3 to the back and 6 to the front.

But this is a gaming phone, and it was the ROG branding proudly. I mean that quite literally, there's a RGB ROG logo to the back, a transparent slice of the back, shows of the cooling solution and the front has this big bezels to the top and bottom that I doubt we'd find in any other flagship phone of 2020. Now, I'm not criticizing the design of the RSA phone 3. Some may, like the gamer look here and honestly, there's no way to put in a 6000mah battery without making the device bulky. But if it came down to purely aesthetics, I'd prefer the OnePlus 8 pro it's more than a millimeter thinner and about 40 grams.

Lighter, has a more premium look and the matte back feels better in my hands. We also have the signature alert slider as well as an official ip68 rating, both of which the ROG phone 3 lacks. Now, if I had to play the devil's advocate here, I could mention the bigger battery better cooling, air triggers side mounted type c ports and all that as plus points for the ROG phone 3. But then we would be stuck at design and build for longer than we already have and hey no one wants that right. So, let's just move on to the display.

Now, despite having an overall larger footprint, the panel on the ROG phone 3 is actually smaller than that of the OnePlus 8 pro. We have a 6.78 inch, HD plus AMOLED panel on the OnePlus that can run at 120 hertz, even on the highest resolution. Now we do have that punch hole to the left for the selfie camera and the display here, sloops down to both sides, giving the OnePlus 8 pro a very premium feel. On the other hand, we have the 144 hertz 6.59 inch AMOLED panel on the ROG phone 3. , it's a bit smaller, but since both of them are AMOLED, we do get those inky, blacks and punchy colors.

Both these displays are also HDR, 10 plus, and white wine. L1 compliant, which means content on them, looks absolutely stunning. So in the end, what it all comes down to is higher resolution or more refresh rate. Now, personally, I can't tell the difference between 120 hertz and 144 hertz, especially on a phone, so I guess I'm leaning towards the bigger quad HD plus panel on the OnePlus 8 pro here now. If you thought that the display round was close, wait till we dig into performance, so the OnePlus 8 pro is running on the regular snapdragon 865, while the ASUS ROG phone 3 is running on the 865 plus.

So what does the plus variant get us well other than higher benchmark scores when it comes to daily usage? I'd be hard-pressed to tell these two apart everything from the way animations glide across the display to how fast the apps open up the UI is silky smooth on both phones. Even when it comes to multitasking, the 8 gigs of lpddr5 ram was able to handle it just fine on both devices. Now one slight difference here is that, although the internal storage is the same, 128 gigs for the base model, the OnePlus 8 pro utilizes dual lane UFS 3.0, while the ROG phone 3 uses the newer UFS 3.1 storage, both phones have a higher 256 gig variant. That comes with an absolute overkill, 12 gigs of ram. Since we are talking about performance, we have to talk gameplay right, so we have the same Arduino 650 GPU on both phones and all the regular AAA titles like PUBG and Call of Duty run fine, even with the detail levels.

Maxed out. That being said, the air triggers 3 on the ROG phone 3 does give it an edge as having extra physical buttons always comes in handy. On top of that, we can do this and ASUS's game genie, plus armory crate, blows OnePlus's fanatic mode out of the water when it comes to features as well as customizability. Now in games that support higher refresh rate. Like real racing 3, we didn't notice that the ROG phone 3 felt a tad snappier.

Now was it because of the 144hz refresh rate or the 270hz touch sampling, or maybe even the 25 millisecond response time of the screen. We don't really know. What we do know is that games that do support both 120 and 144hz screens. The ROG phone 3 comes out ahead and thanks to a bigger vapor chamber and better optimize cooling, the ROG phone 3 can sustain peak performance without throttling longer and then there's the whole slew of add-on accessories, starting from the proactive cooler 3 to 2. In view docks and more that can transform the gaming experience on the ROG phone 3 to something completely different.

So when it comes to performance, the ROG phone 3 takes the round. It's not just the hardware advantage that makes the kg phone 3 an amazing phone. Is the attention to detail in the software that sets ASUS apart. Here we have x mode which offers various performance settings. It also changes up.

The visual of the phones, which is a nice touch, then there's arm recreate. That is like the game hub from where we can tweak hardware components like CPU GPU and even the screen sensitivity. And finally, we also have game genie, which is the in-game assistant that lets us customize and use the air triggers as well as stream and record our gameplay and a lot more as we mentioned earlier. This is one segment where OnePlus falls short. However, oxygen OS does come with its own perks.

We have a lot more customization options, OnePlus shelf work, life balance and a lot more little tweaks and features that OS fans have come to love over time. So, while both may be equally fast, since they are basically the same thing, stock android with a layer of customization on it. In the end, software comes down to personal preference, and personally I'll always lean towards oxygen, OS and OnePlus. On this one now powering top tier hardware is no mean task, but we have a 4510 William hour battery on the OnePlus 8 pro to handle it all. The kg phone 3, though, comes out on top with a massive 33 percent more battery size.

So with both the phones sharing the same flagship internals, the bigger battery on the ROG phone 3 means it lasts around 25 to 30 longer than the OnePlus 8 pro. That being said, both these phones should easily last us through a day of normal usage, and if we happen to run out of charge, both devices come with 30 watt fast charges. Now, one advantage that the OnePlus 8 pro has over the ROG phone 3 is that it supports warp charge 30 wireless. Basically, it charges almost as fast wirelessly as it does wire. Now, the ROG phone 3 does miss out on wireless charging despite having a glass back, but thanks to the massive advantage in battery life, it still comes out winning this round, and it's not just wireless charging.

The kg phone 3 misses out on quite a few nice to haves like the ip68 water, resistance of the OnePlus 8 pro or the alert slider to the top right. Of course, it makes a word with gaming related features like the new air triggers 3 that can now be split into two individual buttons and the side mounted dual type c port. That's how the kg phone 3 interfaces with most of its accessories and then there's the RGB kg light at the back of the kg phone 3. , it's user customizable. It looks cool, and I think it was worth mentioning in the sundries now the areas where these two devices go head-to-head, they kind of come out sharing the honors.

Both phones have stereo speakers, but the one on the kg phone 3 have a bit more depth and bass to them. No headphone jacks on either device, but again ASUS does provide a type c to 3.5 mm dongle. In the box, the ROG phone 3 comes with four mics compared to two on the OnePlus. Both phones have in display fingerprint scanners under the AMOLED panels, and these are pretty neck and neck in terms of speed, but OnePlus 8 pro does beat out the ROG phone 3, with its faster facial recognition, which then leaves us with the cameras. Now we have an interesting set of cameras on both devices, so kicking it off with the primary shooters.

We have the 64 megapixel mix 686 sensors on the kg phone 3, going up against the 48 megapixel mix 689 sensors on the OnePlus 8 pro under good lighting conditions. These two are very difficult to tell apart both take crisp looking shots with vibrant colors and amazing dynamic range. The wide f 1.8 aperture on both phones means we get quite a bit of natural both as well. That being said, if we zoom in quite a bit like on this metal railing here, we can see the 16 megapixel photo taken by the ROG phone 3 retains sharper textures on the metal when compared to the 12 megapixel snap of the OnePlus 8 pro now when it comes too low light shots, the dedicated 9 modes on both phones come in handy now. The ROG phone did actually quite well here.

Asus has nailed the post-processing. That being said, the OnePlus 8 pro does come out with the better and brighter pictures. Thanks to is, it can expose longer, sometimes even twice as much as the ROG phone 3, which in turn leads to more details and better colors. Moving on to the wide-angle camera is next, and this one is a pretty big mismatch. The OnePlus 8 pro is using the 48 megapixel mix 586 sensors, going up against a 13 megapixel snapper from the ROG phone 3.

As expected, the 8 pro outperforms, the kg phone 3 here sharper shots with more details in the shadows. One interesting thing is that the OnePlus uses this 48 megapixel ultra-wide snapper for macro shots and it handle beats the 5 megapixel dedicated camera on the ROG phone 3. And that's not all the OnePlus.8 pro has two more cameras: the 8 megapixel telephoto camera that offers up to 3x optical zoom and the fourth being the 5 megapixel color photo camera that OnePlus had to disable post the x-ray issues cropping up when it came to selfies the 16-megapixel shooter on the OnePlus, actually outperforms, the higher 24 megapixel snapper on the ROG phone 3. Zooming in we can see how we get more texture and then skin with the snap from the OnePlus, while the one from the URSS looks kinda soft, also at full 24 megapixels, even for portraits, the RJ phone 3 tends to blow out the forward background quite badly, while the OnePlus does a much better job here. Interestingly enough, the OnePlus 8 pro can only go up to 4k 60fps, while the ROG phone 3 comes with the option of recording up to 8k footage yeah, that's pretty amazing side by side, comparing the 4k60 footage from both devices.

We can see that the footage from the OnePlus pro looks a lot brighter with puncher colors and, what's more, it seems a bit more stable as well speaking of stability, we have the hyper, steady video on the ROG phone 3, while the OnePlus 8 pro comes with super stable and while both phones have slow motion, video, the ROG phone 3 can do 4k at 120 fps, which isn't something that I have seen in any other phone. Yet on top of that, the OnePlus 8 pro only has a pro mode for photos. Asus has included one for videos as well. Asus also uses the quiet mic setup to good effect here, giving us directional audio, recording capabilities. So the end of the day, while ASUS has come up with some great features that makes taking videos on the kg phone 3 very interesting.

The OnePlus 8 pro does take better quality images as well as video, so the camera round goes to OnePlus. It's been a back and forth battle between the two phones right till the very end, but when it comes to price, the ASUS ROG phone undercuts the OnePlus 8 pro by 5000, so the base variant of the OnePlus 8 pro is priced at 54 999 rupees, while the ROG phone 3 comes in at 50 000, both phones having the same amount of ram and storage, so the OnePlus 8 pro is only worth paying the 5k extra. Only if you really want that IP rating or wireless charging, or you prefer the higher resolution panel on the optics on the OnePlus for everyone else. The kg phone 3 offers an all-around flagship experience right from the 144hz amulet panel to the snapdragon 865 plus, and this time they even provided some perfect cameras on there. That's just my opinion, though.

Now I want to know what do you guys think which one of these two flagships? Would you pick up and why?
