Moto G Stylus (2021) vs. Moto G Stylus (2020) Comparison! Worth The Upgrade? By TechDaily

What's going on guys, my name is wade with tech daily and in this video we're going to be doing a full comparison between the new 2021 Moto G stylus and last year's Moto G stylus. Now, unlike a lot of other Motorola phones that have launched this year, this new 2021 Moto G stylus is actually an upgrade over the previous version. It's bigger! It's redesigned. Furthermore, it has some spec changes and I think if you are looking to jump up to this new device, it might just be worth the upgrade. I'm going to go over everything you need to know about both of these phones in this video also talk about why I think last year's Moto G stylus might still be a solid option as well. There's a lot to go over, so I won't waste any more time.

Let's just go ahead and get right into it and see what these phones have to offer when it comes to the price. This new Moto G stylus right now, retails for 299 dollars unlocked and that's exactly the same as what last year's Moto G stylus retailed for. If you're in the US there's a good chance, the stylus will make it to some carrier and prepaid networks, which could certainly bring the price down a little. That's exactly what we saw last year anyway, and actually, since last year's phone has been out for a while. Now you can snag it at a bit of a discount places like Amazon.

Have it now for 250 or 260 bucks. All in all, these two phones are still super close in price. You can save a little of money by maybe picking up last year's phone, but fortunately, if you want to get this new one, you won't be paying too much more and if you guys are interested in doing some comparison, shopping of your own I'll leave some links down below in the video description to all the deals and discounts for these two devices, the most noticeable difference with the new Moto G stylus, I think, is in its physical form factor it's bigger. It's totally redesigned and, to be honest, I think it does look a little more premium now versus last year. In regard to its size, the new Moto G stylus comes in at 6.8 inches, which is quite a bit larger than last year's 6.4 inch phone, and you can see that most of that extra size is in height. The new phone is super tall, and it stretches that 20 by 9 aspect ratio.

Overall, it is certainly one of the bigger phones, just in general, that you can buy right now, and you can do a lot with all that screen, especially paired up with the stylus when writing, for example, but I do know that bigger, isn't always better and some folks might have a little trouble managing this new bigger device. It's me, though, I consider it. The bump up in screen size to definitely be a positive change up front. At least most everything else remain. The same.

You've got similar corner hole, punch camera cutouts across the top slim bezels, all around and a slightly larger bottom chin, and I think this is a totally fine setup. I have no complaints here, definitely modern, looking smartphones with a solid screen to body ratio around back. This is where most of the redesign on the new Moto G stylus can be found. Not only is the camera module totally changed up, but the new phone, at least in this white color, also has polished, chrome accents all around, and I think collectively, like I said all the physical changes here now make the new Moto G stylus look a little more premium and a little less like a mid-range motor phone now material-wise most everything remain. The same.

You've still got a plastic rear housing with a shiny glossy finish the outside edge and frame on both phones to me feel like metal. At least the new phone is a little more curvy and contoured, which I think makes it seem thinner and more comfortable in the hand, and while neither phone offers wireless charging, they both remain water, repellent. That's the term Motorola uses at least so sort of mix of materials and features they're still budget or mid-range phones. So they won't have all the flagship touches, but I think there's still a lot to like, and the new phone to me offers a lot of positive physical changes. Taking a look around on the left side, there's the sim and SD card trays on the right side, similar volume buttons, but a new power button on the new g stylus that now doubles as the fingerprint sensor down below most everything else remained the same with the headphone jack, USB-C, port and speaker and built-in stylus, of course, and around back obviously that new camera module, like I mentioned, is there and last year's phone also had its fingerprint sensor in the center.

So just two more things I want to mention the physical aspects of these phones. First, is that new fingerprint sensor Motorola made this change on a couple other devices this year, sort of abandoning their famous Motorola dimple fingerprint sensor on back and moving it to that power button, and I do think this is a great change. It's not only easier to use and more comfortable as well. I think it feels a little quicker, and really I'm just glad they kept the fingerprint sensor. To begin with.

This is another solid, positive change on the new phone and what's also sort of interesting, is that Motorola did bring back face. Unlock on the new phone as well, they dropped it on a bunch of last year's phones for some reason. But it's returned now this year, and it's really pretty good too so great biometric options here, with some changes in upgrades versus last year now one thing that actually was a downgrade over last year's device is the speaker setup. Last year's Moto G stylus had dual speakers with the secondary one in the earpiece. This new Moto G stylus loses that and that's definitely a shame.

I think the out loud listening experience, kind of suffers because of it and, as you guys know, I'm a big fan of dual speakers on smartphones, so certainly disappointing to see and here's a quick audio sample. So you can get an idea. Obviously, the main reason I think, you'd even consider one of these phones is because of that built-in stylus and there are just a couple of stylus related changes worth mentioning physically, like you saw, the built-in stylus itself is still located in the same place, but this year, Motorola added that click pop-out mechanism that we've seen on the Samsung note devices and the lg style 6. , and I do like this change. It definitely makes the pen easier to pop in and out of the phone.

The actual stylus has changed a little as well. This new one is a tiny bit taller, which I like, I think it's more comfortable to write with at this length. It's also rounded this time. Instead of having that sort of flat profile which to me doesn't make much of a difference. I maybe like the flat housing a bit more, but not a huge deal, and the tip of the stylus is also a little wider and a little thicker as well.

But in my experience with writing and drawing I haven't found, that makes much of a difference now when it comes to the actual stylus related features and apps Motorola didn't really add much here. So all this should be pretty familiar to you already. You can, of course, just use the stylus to tap touch and swipe your way through the phone as if you were using your finger, that's remained exactly the same and I do know a lot of people just find this super useful on its own and when you pull the stylus out, you'll get this same little pop-up side menu with shortcuts to apps and stylus related tools that you can utilize. Like I said most everything is going to be the same here. You can quickly take another screenshots, for example, there's the coloring book, the notes' app has actually been redesigned a little, mostly with just how the pen, tips and color options have been categorized, but no real changes here, and you can also change up the actual stylus shortcut menus all the same to include other Motorola or third-party apps, or even some other stylus-supported android apps you'd.

Like to utilize and have quick access to all in all, this is essentially the exact same stylus feature set that we've had since last year and I haven't found any crazy new add-ons or updates. The other thing that also hasn't changed is the overall writing experience. Unlike Samsung's note series, for example, the styluses on these motor phones are just simple basic metal, pointer tools, they're not connected to the device in any way, there's no Bluetooth connectivity or special functions, and the screen and the stylus aren't necessarily made for one another. So you have the same sort of lag and latency experience when writing even on this new phone, nothing has been improved here and, to be honest, it's not a terrible experience. It's what I expected.

It's something I've gotten used to on these phones. Just keep in mind that the stylus experience is still a far cry from Samsung's note devices. These phones still offer just a very basic, relatively slow writing setup, and even with this new 2021 device, nothing has been updated. Of course, I already mentioned that the display on the new Moto G stylus is quite a bit larger, but let's take just a second to go over the actual specs. Both phones offer IPS lcds at a full HD 1080p resolution.

Last year's phone came in at 2300 by 1080 packing in 399 pixels per inch, and this year's phone gets a 2400 by 1080 display at 386 pixels per inch to me. Both these phones offer decent displays. All things considered, they're relatively bright, fairly, bold and colorful for LCD at least and side by side. I can't really tell a difference. I don't think anything changed here, which is totally fine by me.

As you guys know, some other motor phones gotta downgrade to 720p, but fortunately that isn't what happened here with stylus it's just as good as last year, and I think the bigger display on its own does offer maybe a slightly better viewing experience anyway. Getting to watch your content on a full 6.8 inch device is really nice, especially for 300 inside the new Moto G. Stylus also gets a slight bump up in specs, though maybe not as significant as some people were hoping. Last year's device was powered by the snapdragon 665 chipsets this year is the snapdragon at 678. , so a little newer, a little more powerful and the geek bench scores certainly reflect that.

You can see we get a noticeable bump up in single core and multi-core scores. The ram, though, remains the same: four gigs inside both phones and the same 128 gigabytes of built-in storage, as well. Now, unfortunately, on the software side of things, the new Moto G stylus hasn't yet been updated to android 11, as you can see, and we're dealing with an almost identical user experience as last year. Right now at least Motorola just isn't really too quick with the updates. Unfortunately, but in day to day use, I think you'll still see a bit of a speed increase with the new phone anyway, like I said, not a crazy upgrade, but still a little something versus last year.

I personally always thought the Moto G stylus was a solid phone and could tackle anything I needed to do, and that seems to be the case once again this year, just remember to keep your expectations in check. It is still a budget device, but I think for most people for social media use YouTube the stylus apps, of course, a bit of gaming. Even this new phone will be plenty good, and it's just enough of a bump. I think that it makes the new phone feel like a fresh snappy new device. Also, just a quick side note the battery powering these phones seems to be the same.

It's a 4, 000 William capacity inside with the same maximum 10 watt charging speeds. Now the slightly bigger display on the new phone might draw a little more power, but in my experience so far with both phones, I haven't really found any noticeable difference in longevity with either device at this point, so I don't think there's going to be a huge difference there. Finally, when it comes to the cameras, we actually have kind of a mixed bag of things here, we'll start with the hardware. Both phones actually have a similar 48, megapixel, f, 1.7 aperture main lens. The secondary ultra-wide angle lens has changed completely last year.

It was a 16, megapixel, 117 degree lenses this year. It's an 8, megapixel 118 degree lenses, there's the same two megapixel macro lens, but the new stylus also has a fourth lens. Now, a two megapixel depth sensor. In addition to some hardware changes, the camera app has also been revamped quite a bit, and I think this new look is a great change. Your shooting modes and features are a little easier to find and manage.

I think the app just has a better flow to it, and you can see most everything remain the same as far as what all you can do. There's 4k video, there's night mode, there's a pro feature now on the new phone and while maybe there aren't too many new additions, I think there's still plenty to work with these phones considering the price. The real difference here actually is just gonna. Be in practice with the real world results, the new Moto G stylus ends up taking significantly better pictures than last year's phone in a lot of ways. The white balance with this low light shot is obviously just way better.

The added detail is super noticeable in my opinion, and I was surprised to see that even as bad as this lighting condition was, the new phone just did a significantly better job. Also, the selfie camera is much improved as well. The specs seem to remain the same, both 16 megapixel shooters, but the results again are just really quite different. There's way less smoothing in my face, for example, and way more detail with the new Moto G stylus again, I think the lighting and color is a bit better and all in all, while the specs and camera features, maybe haven't changed so much. The end result, I think, is going to be quite a bit better to me.

The new Moto G stylus offers just quite a bit more potential and noticeably better results with everyday shooting, and that's just really great to see overall, like I've said before, unlike a lot of other Motorola phones in 2021, this Moto G stylus, I think, is a genuine upgrade over last year. It's bigger it's nicer. It offers some updated specs and improved camera capabilities, and I think if you do own last year's phone, you should maybe consider this new one, if you're in the market, for an upgrade, if you don't yet have a Moto G stylus, and you want to venture into a device with a pen. This is still one of the few that even offers one last year's device might be enticing for a slight discount. I think it's a perfect deal, but I also think it's worth the extra money to just jump up to this new one.

It's a solid device on its own, but a decent upgrade over last year as well. So there you go. That's everything you need to know about the new Moto G stylus versus last year's Moto G stylus.
