iPhone 12 Pro Max Long Term Review - Still Worth Buying in 2021?

Well the 12 pro max we've had it for almost a year I know has been a full year, but you know last year apple's cadence was somewhat thrown off, and so I was reflecting on using the 12 for maximum. You know was this worth it is. Is this thing uh as great as apple's claims are? What's it like to use this, and again I've upgraded every year for context, so I know some of my commentary might be jaded because of that, but uh. Well, let's just talk about this right and hey. If you can't tell there are no scripts here, I'm just gonna talk to you like. Oh, anyone else about my experience using this, and if you like that style, or you listen, you can put up with my face or my rambling and do those three things that I really no one likes to ask for.

But you know I'm gonna just allude to them because that's enough and if I say it out loud, you're going to be like. Oh, my gosh, I'm clicking off so fair enough, well played let's get into this uh. Well, let's talk about uh design. Right so design. For me, it's one of those things where you know every year.

No matter what apple does people are like? It's antiquated, it's old, it's you know, you know, the notch is the same size, and I'm like I understand right like us, techies we want like the coolest and latest and greatest stuff, but well, that's not representative of everyone else, and so I think design here you know, given the pacific, blue color, I like a lot a given, given the fact that really there's not much more, they can do design wise other than maybe adjust to your preferences, which is probably not going to happen. I like it. I like it a lot. You know I prefer the camera modules kind of isolated from one another. You know the LIDAR sensor, the flash you know yeah I mean.

Is it gorgeous? I don't know, but is it functional? Absolutely in fact there's some android phones that they use one sheet of glass to cover the entire camera setup, and if that breaks well, uh you go broke, and so I do like apple's approach to this, and you know the biggest difference. For me this year is you know you have slimmer, bezels ever so slightly right, uh 6.7-inch screen uh, but furthermore, you get flat edges now. Listen! You could probably twist my arm, and I'd probably admit that I do prefer maybe the curved edges of like the 11 pro or the 10 10s right, but once you put in a case that is kind of null and void in my opinion, and so you know design here, it's its its nice right. In fact, I do like the fact that there's a level of parity between the iPad Pro industrial, squared off design and now the iPhone, so I'm fine with this design. You know the notch doesn't really bother me like it does some people.

Everything else makes sense to me. The only knock if I'm going to give it one is the fact that it doesn't have lightning that to me yeah that kind of that, or it doesn't have type c. I'm sorry that that kind of was like. Okay, really. We can't.

We can't move on to something, but we'll get into that. In a moment the know the mag safe. You know the future of that and all that stuff, so uh design. Let me know down below how you feel, but I'm a fan, it's definitely more manageable than you know. Let's say like uh.

Well, you let me know right. I know some people they, you know they prefer the mini. Some people are like. I can't do anything bigger than a bigger than like a 12, regular 12 pro that's too big, and for me the max to me, like I don't know, maybe I'm just used to it. It feels very manageable but uh, you know, listen, there's other phones out there that have bigger screens that feel even more manageable.

So it's just this relative thing. You let me know how you feel, but moving on to the actual display uh well, I was hoping that it was going to have 120 hertz, because I am one of those people that is like adamantly for it, and some people seem vehemently opposed to getting it, and I'm like why it's if you're going to pay 200 a thousand bucks for phone when you want it, even if you don't know you're going to get it. Don't you want it uh, and so I understand it, though some people don't notice it some people do I personally wish they would have added it? But here's the thing- and I know some. I know people are going to get mad at me for this. But it's true, you know apple's touch sample rate right.

The with the iPhone 10, I think, was 120 and there was some confusion there, but I think it's up to 240 now, if I'm not mistaken, but the touch sample rate combined with their animation and just optimization, it's almost as if they can buy time to 120 hertz, because it is that smooth, if that makes sense, the appearance of being smooth uh, and so I understand why maybe they didn't I just wish they did. But everything else about the display is fantastic right. I mean, I think, it's incredibly bright. It gets incredibly dim. I do wish.

I got a little dimmer. Furthermore, I don't know if that's possible with OLED or maybe mini led, because even at night you know, I find that it is still kind of bright, even at the lowest possible setting. But listen, that's an edge case. I don't use my phone at night in bed all the time and just stare at it. You know just the times I do interact with it.

I wish it did get dimmer, but listen. It's its! It's one of Samsung's best panels and so apple calibrated this to their liking, looks perfect to me. But lets uh! Well, let's move on to cameras here right, so I'm the furthest thing from a videographer and a professional photographer, and not even close. If you can't tell just letting you know um, and you hear a lot of times when people like oh content creation, they do all this stuff with their phone, and you're kind of like at a distance like man. What do you guys do differently than me, and they don't do anything different? It really is that impressive? When you look at you know digital stabilization, combined with I, I don't think it's called optical image stabilization, but you know uh.

Was it sensor shift or sensor whatever? It is the fancy term? I just forgot combining those elements with apple's own ISP and all that stuff, like they're they're, it's insane honestly what they're able to do and really across the board right most smartphones. These days are impressive, but the one aspect of it that's kind of interesting to me is that when you look at the pixel right what they do with the phone uh with their cameras, it's impressive for point-and-shoot and portraits right, great right, Samsung's doing the whole. You know zooming in 50 to 100 times and looking at partnering up with, maybe canon I think I read or something, and so each one of these companies are kind of doing different things. So to just compare them linearly is a little difficult and everyone's interpretation of a good photo and video is different. But what I can say is all-rounder, I say: Apple still has the edge over really everyone else, because the pixel video it's good enough, but it's not anywhere near.

In my opinion, the iPhone photos different conversations, Samsung stills. We can get into semantics over that, and I'm not making this a comparison. But video to me, I still feel, like apple, has all all-rounder they've really they're, still ahead a little, and so hopefully, this year, we'll see some more competition google's looking like they're doing some craziness. But for me overall, the cameras are great and combining that with the integration of actual social media apps, you know it's just better and I'm not throwing shade at Samsung or any android. You know OEMs, it's really google's fault.

In my estimation, you know there's so many smartphone uh options on android land that they literally from my understanding, is- and I think Samsung's only exception- maybe google, but it's still so ambiguous. It's the fact that they take us. They take the screen, the viewfinder of when you're like looking to take a photo, and it screenshots that sometimes for some phones, and that sends that that's why people like? Oh android, has crappy cameras. I'm like well! No, but I understand why you may think that, and so all of that rambling to say that Instagram social media apps in general, if there's camera elements integrated, you're, probably gonna, have a better experience on the iPhone here. Just that's the reality of it.

Uh plus you have stereo recording, so it's just they're they're, powerful right, but moving on. Let's talk about performance right, because this is the is always interesting. Conversation right when you look on it. When you look on YouTube and read it, you see comparisons which one's faster this and then sometimes I feel like it's over simplified right. You have like speed, test and burst performance, and this and that to me, it's its an it's, an amalgamation of.

Can it handle day-to-day tasks? Can it record 4k at 60 120 for more than five minutes uh, but also battery life and also long-term uh? You know sustainability for sustained load and all that stuff right like how is this going to work today with what we have for apps and performance and games and all that stuff, and again I'm not a gamer. I don't play many games. I know this thing's more than capable of playing games right, but for me, I think the processor prowess also plays into its favor just for support right I mean look at windows and sometimes android OEMs. They drop support so quick, or they'll go to the security updates, but not feature updates, and I'm like that's nice from a security standpoint absolutely, but when Apple is able to offer support for so long, I think it does play into really the processors that they're putting in now, and so they're playing that long game, and so I think performance wise. I don't think anyone's doubting apple's ability to nail performance and really beat most other benchmarks.

Listen, I don't like them. I don't really care for them, but benchmarks obviously show that apple's. You know performance lead is kind of insane and again I. I hope that like Qualcomm love them hate them, I'm not a huge fan. I mean I'm glad the modems in the phone, because it's better than intel's, I don't like their business model, but listen.

I want to see them make something, that's just as fast as the m1, because it's going to make apple kind of leapfrog. Furthermore, I, like competition, I'll, leave that there performance is fantastic, but let's talk about MagSafe accessories in that MagSafe ecosystem, because it kind of does feel like they're, creating their own ecosystem around MagSafe. Furthermore, I know an ecosystem within an ecosystem. It's like inception um. So for me, I was skeptical at first because q-charging to me is inefficient.

It's usually about 60 efficiency for any cheat and that's energy charging and that's like on a good day right just from heat and not aligning things right and the coil. It's just a mess right. So apple's implementation actually makes sense. There's no ambiguity! It's either on there all the way and getting all the charging and possibly can, or it's not right, and so I do like the implementation, and so I don't know if this is going to lead down the road of. Like you know no ports, you know again, I don't know for sure.

I don't know how CarPlay would work. I can envision a future like if you look at the iPad Pro smart connector, where maybe the iPhone has that, and you charge it, and you can restore it and do updates and battery packs and wallets, and all that stuff we'll see that's kind of cool, it's interesting to see like lg and some other companies that had modular phones. Obviously, implementation didn't land for like anyone, but it's cool to think that apple is now taking that idea, and they're slowly like implementing it. So you let me know how you feel I've been using the MagSafe duo with some of these MagSafe. You know cases from apple and other companies offer MagSafe accessories, but I typically buy OEM stuff um, but that's kind of been nice right now.

Is it overpriced? I would probably say: yeah like you, don't need to spend 130, plus another 30 or 50 for the proper wattage brick for a single wireless charger and an Apple Watch charger. But there is really nothing like it. You know Balkan, they all make different things, but this folding kind of you know material uh with the pop-up Apple Watch charger if it's. It's built very, very well, and so I've been using a few of those you know around the office and home and all that stuff. So I'm a fan, it's just.

It is kind of expensive for what it is, but I know you can go to Amazon and get one for a fraction. It's true um, but again you look at the battery pack. That was just released and the wallets that are out there. I'm like, I wonder if there's more to the MagSafe than we currently think, there's going to be, but you let me know how you feel about that um, but you're talking about MagSafe and batteries and charging the one thing. That's again always impressive and is apple's just ability to, I guess be efficient with their battery life.

You know you talk about all this performance uh and everything it's able to do in 4k. Recording battery life for me has just been stellar no games, though I don't play games. I don't do anything too crazy, but I just use it as a tool. Every day you look like a tool and well a little um. I find that you know: standby mode is incredibly like strong, like you could literally go to bed with 98 wakes up, it'll be a 98.

You have to do anything uh. Furthermore, you put in low power mode you'll, get even more battery life, they've, they've, added, optimized charging and all kinds of ways to maybe eliminate waste where they can. I'm not attributing motive. I'm not saying that apple's, this altruistic company. That really cares about the environment, but listen! You know.

Some of these moves do seem like they're trying to make these products last longer um, but battery life for me has been great and apple breaks it down for you and screen on time. You know what is using the most, maybe an app's going rogue could be. An app issue could be system-wide issue who knows, but for me at least on the pro max and again, I know it is the bigger phone so sure it's probably going to have the best battery life. I've been impressed. I know those 12 million people are kind of freaking out um.

Now I did talk about Qualcomm and I do have to say you know, even if I why dislike their business models, I can say that this phone, when it comes to 5g when it comes to hanging on to signal in low signal areas, uh speeds and call reliability and everything. I definitely noticed a difference between last year's iPhones where they used intel modems. I definitely could see a difference here, and it was tangible so that to me like really stood out, um and again, dual sim. If you're into that, I think um recently they allowed or implemented dual e sim 5g support. You know so that I've been using that with us, mobile and T-Mobile and a couple other carriers.

That's worked really well, and so you know I just to put this all together right because I know, I know people every year, they're not happy with these upgrades, no matter what they do, and I'm I'm learning you know even last year was kind of the same thing. It's not one big massive element, that's just like I have to have this new feature. It's kind of an amalgamation of these tiny quality of life improvements unless all companies are kind of guilty of that, I would say android's a little more like they can kind of go nuts with specs and stuff um. But I understand uh what apple is doing here. I've enjoyed this phone, you know, listen.

I've talked about iOS and there's still some things I want to see fixed, but I would say this is still a very capable phone, even though we're coming it feels like it was yesterday a full year into this um. Furthermore, I'm a fan. Furthermore, I liked it iOS there are certain things. Furthermore, I have videos on that where things could be better, but you let me know how you've liked yours now. Furthermore, I just wanted to turn on the camera and talk about my experience in using this.

You know what do I like um? I really the few things I dislike. If we're setting aside iOS, it's going to be that there's no type c, I just wish there was a type c standard across Apple devices, but I guess I understand from this perspective, why they don't uh. Obviously, I would always want battery life to be better and the screen 120 hertz would be something I would like and then obviously just the charger in the box. I would still like that, but I understand that's not going to happen, but anyway, rambling aside, you let me know how you've liked yours um. You know I'm excited about the new iPhone, 13 or 12 s.

I hope that has 120 hertz. I think we're going to see a tie, a ton of just like little quality of life improvements, maybe one or two marquee features right last year was mag, safe and 5g. In my opinion, I think this year will be 120 hertz and maybe massive camera upgrades we'll see, but that's it for me uh and well. If you made it this far, I appreciate it and uh well I'll see in the next video peace.
