11 inch vs 12.9 inch iPad Pro - Which iPad Pro Should You Buy in 2020?

This is the construct - it's our nerd program - the place where we discuss meticulous details and topics other people might not have interest in - like should I buy the 11" or 12.9" iPad Pro. Since this is a free program, there might be some short commercial interruptions like the fact that this video is brought to you by Paperlike…but more on that later. On a side note, let me say that upgrading your 2018 iPad Pro to the 2020 model in the same size is borderline stupid. Thank you! Now that we have this out of the way let's talk about iPad sizes. In the end, I will share with you my updated iPad size chart, which might further clear your outlook. Hey guys, this is E, and if you are new to the channel, welcome.

My name is Iskren, and most people call me E, and this 11" iPad Pro is an absolute jewel - I mean you can carry it with you anywhere you go, and if you have one of those satchels or even a larger fanny pack, you can have a fully-fledged NOT a computer on the go. I am saying all this, because at the end of the day the choice between 12.9" and 11" iPad Pro is really a choice of productivity vs portability - or is it?. Can you be as productive on the 11" model as you can be on the 12.9", and can you feel lightweight carrying around the 12.9" as you would if you had the 11" with you? See, I love working on both tablets, but to be honest, I find the 12.9" perfect if I want to spend the entire day on a tablet (with an asterisk) - if the tablet sits on a desk for the most part. The 12.9" is significantly more substantial ((471 grams) vs. (641 grams)) and that's without any keyboards or accessories.

If I want to carry it with me all the time, it gets a bit too much at the end of the day. As with most human beings, even the slightest note of a bother means slow but steady elimination and changing habits. I noticed myself leaving the tablet where it is because when I have to carry a baby in one hand and keep the tabled docked with an open keyboard on the other, the 12.9" becomes too much to handle easily. Also, when I leave the house and want to take the gear with me, carrying a 15" laptop alongside a 12.9" iPad with a keyboard and some chargers, makes things a bit on the bulkier side. If I decide to take just my iPad, carrying it like a book without tucking it into a bag or sleeve feels a bit unnatural.

If I have to put it in a bag or backpack, it has to be a regular-sized one, which means that I can just as well grab my laptop and the rest of the gear with me. Are you getting my point? When it comes to portability, the 12.9" tablet equipped with the keyboard is just as portable as a 13" laptop. Not saying it is not portable, but it has nothing to do with this little guy - the 11" iPad Pro. This tiny marvel is a breeze to carry around. It is so perfectly proportioned and sized that I can almost put it in my pocket…I said almost…OK, that's an overstatement, of course.

Even with the new Magic Keyboard attached to it (which weighs as much as the tablet itself), this is still the most powerful and portable device you can have at your disposal. It is excellent to carry with one hand, no matter if it's open or closed. It is fantastic to use in a coffee shop, in the back of the car, plane, train, or anywhere else you want to sit or stand and be productive. My first reaction to the 11" after using the 12.9" for two years was - LOOK AT HOW TINY THAT IS... WHAT CUTE LITTLE TABLET.

But don't let the cuteness cloud your judgment as to how powerful this little device is. It can throw a punch as big as its big brother and, in many cases, bigger than what some MacBook Pros and Airs can do. Running with the smaller 11" model has few drawbacks compared to the 12.9" however. The screen is on the smaller side if you are into drawing, sketching, or other creative work, perhaps like 3D modeling, which are workflows that will be better streamlined on the bigger screen. Another drawback is that the layout is usually cramped if you are into keyboards (which you should be, especially this new Magic Keyboard with the trackpad).

The 12.9" accessories come with a lot more air in the keyboard department as well as full-size keys. Finally, the sound of the 12.9" echoes deeper, and it is more potent than what the 11" can offer. Don't get me wrong, both tablets are industry leaders when it comes to sound, but the 11" sounds smaller than the big tablet - duuuh! I used to have a very comfortable leaning on the back of the chair position on my desk, where I could use the 12.9" iPad Pro pretty much all day long as it is. In fact, my Mac and monitor would be there only to display the screensaver while I spend the day on the iPad. I was concerned that wouldn't be the case with the smaller 11" model, but I was wrong.

Almost 2" smaller does make a difference on many occasions (we are still talking about technology here), but in this one, the difference is not as tremendous. Maybe that is because the iPad OS is not window oriented as Mac OS, and most of the content is beautifully scaled throughout the entire real estate of the tablet, but running my daily tasks on the smaller screen feels just as good. Streaming and gaming on the 11" is also great, although the bigger tablet offers a more immersive experience because of size and like we mentioned the sound. A while back I did an iPad size chart to help you make your choice. After using the 12.9” for two years and now having the 11 inch So, after all, this, if I have to revise my iPad size chart that I did last year, but before I show it to you, a quick word from today's video sponsor Paperlike. With Paperlike, you not only get a screen protector, but you gain more control of the /Apple Pencil when writing, sketching and drawing on your iPad due to the paper-like resistance and roughness - thus making the Apple Pencil so much more enjoyable.

It’s available for all iPad models and includes free worldwide shipping with a 100% satisfaction guarantee, so to get your hands on your own Paperlike hit the link in the description below! So here's my iPad size chart in question. As I am sharing it with you, I realize that my priorities have shifted and I now fit within the first raw - own a big laptop, travel …ah…minimal and in moderation. So, can you be as productive on the 11" model as you can be on the 12.9"? For the majority of people, those who do gaming, entertainment, documents, browsing, email, and other regular work - definitely yes. This is where traveling and portability play a decisive factor.

For the awesome creators out there, those whose entire setup is the iPad itself, the 12.9" is the way to go. Can you be as portable on the 12.9" as you can be on the 11? Maybe if you have huge hands and the 12.9 feels like 11. It's been an absolute pleasure. This is E Over & Out.
