iPad Pro (2020): Is This The Update Apple Intended? -- A Theory

Hey everyone, its Andrew here from Apple Insider and I love the new iPad pros. There's no doubt about it that these are hands down the best iPads that Apple has ever introduced, but something just seems amiss if we take a look at the features that Apple included in the updated iPad pros, as well as the features they chose not to include, and the recent rumors that went up to launch an after launch. It paints a clear picture that this may not be the iPad Pro that Apple wanted to launch. So in this purely speculative video we're going to run through the new iPad pros at what just doesn't click, what just doesn't make sense, and we're going to hypothesize. What may be happened with the new iPad Pro in what is going to be happening sooner rather than later, with the next generation, the new iPad pros have a good set of new features, but considering the roughly 17 months, development cycle from the November release of the 2018 model and the March release of the 2020 model, the upgrade seemed a little lackluster and definitely leave a little to be desired. Look at the top features of the new iPad Pro we've got: Wi-Fi 6, the ultra wide-angle camera and a LIDAR scanner, but that ultra wide-angle lens came to the iPhone 11.

First, it kind of brings up to spec. It doesn't do a lot unless you actually using a camera on the iPads which a lot of people don't particularly use them, it's good for AR, but if you're not using AR again, it doesn't do a lot for you same with a LIDAR scanner, if you're not using augmented reality. What does that LIDAR scanner do, for? You help a little with the measure app and perhaps scanning documents, but again it's a big headlining feature that doesn't particularly do a lot, and then we have Wi-Fi 6, which is fantastic. If you happen to have a Wi-Fi 6 enabled router, which are still fairly expensive and not a lot of people have them so the clips going on with a 20/20 iPad Pro. So let's go look at those features a little closer starting off with the processor of the new machine.

The new machine is using an 12 Z Bionic processor, which is almost indiscernible from the 12 X Bionic processor of the 2018, and according to reports, the 12 z, biotic processor is physically the same chip as the 12 X Bionic processor, just rebuild so as these are coming off. The production lines. Apple is sorting them out, bidding them and based on the ones that are meeting the specs for the 12 X Bionic. That was released with a 2018 iPad Pro, and there was that over perform that had that extra GPU core those where bent out and being saved for the 12 Z Bionic processor, found in the updated iPad Pro now, when you actually look at the performance, Geek bench results are exactly the same as far as CPU and the GPU just has a small improvement, so Apple after 17 months didn't include an updated processor, now a 13, X, Bionic, processor or anything so with the new ones, you're getting almost the same exact performance for 17 months span. That is just crazy for Apple nut to include a beefier processor for its pro high-end tablet.

Now, let's talk about that camera update the new iPads received a brand-new camera bump that looks somewhat familiar. It looks very similar to the camera bump on the updated iPhone 11 iPhone 11 Pro, an iPhone 11 Pro max, just dictating which model you picked up on. There is the wide-angle lens and the new ultra wide-angle lens, but something again seems amiss see the iPhone 11 happens to also have a wide-angle and ultra wide-angle lens, and yet it is able to take portrait mode shot, uses both those cameras to create depth based image and give you that portrait mode effect separating out your subject from the background. It works very well, and you'd think with two lenses on the back of the 20/20 iPad pros, Apple would be able to do something similar and yet portrait modes are nowhere to be found on the new iPads unless you're, using that front-facing selfie camera. But around back where there are two new cameras, you would think that would be included and furthermore, Apple has an opportunity with that LIDAR sensor, using the LIDAR scanner.

It's able to create better depth map than ever, which would theoretically allow you to take better portrait mode shots than ever better than what we have on the iPhone line and yet again, Apple does not have any portrait mode style effects for the updated iPad. Now, let's talk about the Curious Case of the missing you one chip prior to launch code with leaked that revealed, supposedly that the updated iPad Pro in fact had the ultra-wideband ship apples, you one chip and when the iPad Pro is launched, Apple Insider was immediately skeptical that that feature was included at all as a refresher. The U one ship is Apple's own creation. That's basically used to determine an object's, precise location, great for object, trackers or, as Apple, is using it on the iPhone 11 line to orientate an order and prioritize airdrop destinations. So if there are multiple iPhones in a room, you can look at a specific person's phone.

It'll use that you want to chip to detect that phone is the nearest one, and it prioritizes that in your list of airdrop destinations. So that's what Apple is using it for right now, but in the future can do a lot. More think. Apples, air tags where you'd be able to have an object in a room and that you one ship be able to precisely guide you to where your object is in that room, far more accurate than other Bluetooth based trackers such as tile. But now that the iPad Pro is out, we see that the airdrop feature is not here.

We also see that the toggle that disables, that is also missing and further tear downs from I fix, and it revealed that there is no human chef to be found, and it was again confirmed by daring, fireballs, John Grubber, who a little birdie told him that, yes, the one chip is not in the updated iPad Pro. There are a few reasons why that may be, and it's been speculated that it would require an updated processor to kind of connect in or a redesigned a logic board, but again Apple had 17 months to design more. If you're the production, you know design started before the last iPad was released, and yet there is no e one. Shipping here, Apple, of course, would redesign a logic board as it introduces a new product update. There's no problem with doing that.

So why didn't a Pelee doing that to include that you one ship when Apple introduced the eleven they touted, that you won She saying it did all these great things and more features were going to come down the line likely from its air tags, tracking devices and other features Apple may build in those features have yet to be realized at Apple have decided not to include that chip in their latest Pro tablet, it's very suspicious, to say the least. Then we have the LIDAR scanner, so the LIDAR scanner, like we mentioned before, has no really user facing interface. You really just have the LIDAR scanner include on the back as far as Hardware goes, but to take advantage of it, you need to rely on third-party apps when iPad Pro launched a OK 3.5 hadn't been released, yet, which is what developers required to even start building it into their hardware or into their software. So, especially even now, when you're buying an iPad Pro you take out of the box and wow there's a lighter scanner on there. You can't really do anything with it.

You can't open up the light, our app and start scanning your room and seeing this 3d mesh in it, you can't do squat. Furthermore, you can use the updated measure app which, since the LIDAR scanner, can capture depth information from up to five meters away. Furthermore, you can measure a larger object easier than you could before, but that is not reason enough alone to build this in and if you're not using AR to light our scanner really does almost nothing for you, and you even have to find the developer app. So you have no idea really, whether they're taking advantage of that LIDAR scanner in the first place. So you just have this really great piece of tech that seemingly does almost nothing.

So why is there a LIDAR scanner, it kind of seems like Apple could have been building it in a head of the iPhone Pro or iPhone 12. That's coming out. This fall we're likely to see that scanner there as well, but what seems more likely is it kind of was meant to go with other features like air tags and that you one chip. Imagine if you have your air tags on your keys, you drop them in your couch that you one chip, finds that tracker and pinpoints exactly which direction it is and how far it is away. Then you have a LIDAR scanner, which accurately measures the room is able to not only point you in the direction of your keys but put a pin or a dot or an arrow exactly where they are in your couch, cushion it's a very accurate and there's so many applications.

Could you do use those devices? And yet there is no. You one ship and the LIDAR scanner just feels almost like it's half-baked and all the features for it isn't really here yet so here's the fun part what happened with the new iPad pros. Why is this the iPad that we got this year? Well, here is our theory based on all the rumors that we've been able to compile. Thus far, Apple was likely attempting, through a big overhauled iPad in late 2019 they're, going down that route going with that mini display, mini LED display, maybe an 8 13, X Bionic processor, all these other features, and yet as they're getting closer, that mini LED yield is just not high enough, and we've seen reports that it's not able to ramp up production enough for a product as mass marketed as the iPad Pro, so many LED yokes are not coming out where they're supposed to be, which means Apple is gonna, have to scrap that, or at least delay it and work on getting another iPad out the door towards the end or early 2019 to 2020. Now, in that process, COE bid 19 hits and makes things even more difficult to nail down.

So Apple is now left kind of working on a watered-down iPad Pro. That's retaining a lot of the same features then using that rebuild processor for a little better performance they're using that lighter scanner that was already developed with the iPhone they're able to slap in there and doesn't really require a huge change of the logic board and mainly updating the modem to add Wi-Fi, safe capabilities and that's what we're getting with an updated iPad Pro, which means that, with that being pushed kind of into the beginning of 2020, Apple is likely readying that better iPad Pro for late 2020 or early 2021 right now, rumors are saying late 2020, but with a code 19 crisis coronavirus going on, there's no guaranteeing that we also are unsure on the iPhone launches. Everything is a little of a mess right now, but Apple could be readying it to update everyone with a massively overhauled iPad Pro 1, with that mini LED display and 813 X, or even an 14 X Bionic processor. We already have those LIDAR scanners, Wi-Fi 6, that you one chip can finally be baked in Apple, could truly deliver a hugely overhauled iPad Pro as soon as later this year. But again, this is all just theory and speculation.

We don't know what for sure happened with the iPad Pro if this was what Apple intended to release after 17 months or more in development or if Apple is planning for something bigger. We're going to lean towards the latter, but I want to hear what you guys think.
