Intel Optane in a LAPTOP - Side-by-Side Speed Test! | The Tech Chap By The Tech Chap

Hey guys I'm Tom, the tech, jab and I mean a Seuss's beautiful studio set up just outside London, and I've got two of the first generation of Intel obtain laptops. We've got two VIVO book pro team, one with up team one without and two of Seuss's tough gaming laptops again one with up teen and one without, and I'm going to find out today, just what the real-world difference is between having obtained in your system and not having it to see if it's really worthwhile. So how do you actually know if the laptop you're going to go out and buy? Has Intel obtained memory? Well, Intel have created a whole new brand, we're looking at AI 5 + i7 + + i9 +. This indicates these are performance processors, but it also coupled with Intel, obtain memory so on this five. But pro we've got the core i7 + sticker here, which tells me it's a high-performing processor, and it has octane, but as well as that, hopefully, vendors and retailers will pull their own stickers on the laptops, letting you know if it has it. Let's say you go into a store, and you want to buy a new gaming laptop like this Sub tough gaming laptop.

If you're a gamer you've got a massive Steam library. You're going to want a hard drive that has a big capacity that say a terabyte like this one does, but if you were to get a gaming laptop like this with a one terabyte SSD that would be ludicrously expensive so for laptops like this to still be relatively affordable, something we can all go out and buy they've stuck with a mechanical, hard disk which traditionally are very slow. Just loading up files boot times of pretty rubbish, but putting an octane stick in here means that while we still have a one terabyte capacity, loads and loads of room, it feels as fast as an SSD. So, let's get down to it. Let me show you some side-by-side comparisons, starting with the turf gaming laptops, the one on the left has Intel obtained and the one on the right does not, but they do have the same.1 terabyte hard disk and let's start with a boot test and reaching the desktop, takes 13 seconds on the laptop with obtained vs.20 seconds on the one. Without but let's jump into a game, I've got rise of the Tomb Raider here and let's see how long it takes to get to the main menu, not a big difference here then 14 seconds with obtain and 16 seconds without.

It is worth remembering, though, that obtained isn't going to boost your frame rate or get your better performance in games. What it's doing is caching the most used apps and files, which means they can be accessed more quickly off the hard disk making the laptop feel quicker, but it's not going to make any difference to you, FPS in games that come down to the graphics card, the processor and your RAM. Now, let's move on to pub GM, infamously inefficient and sluggish game to load on any computer. Really, so, let's see how these two fare, so it takes 52 seconds to load on the laptop with up team, and I'm walking one minute and 20 on the one. Without it, that's an extra 30 seconds to load, but of course it's not all about gaming, so I've also got these two Vevo book pro laptops and again, let's start with a boot test.

Once again, the laptop on the left has obtained and that one the right does not, and it takes 16 seconds to reach the desktop with up team versus 42 seconds on the one without it now, these people book pros are kind of aimed at creators and designers, so it'll be interesting to see how the Adobe suite compares with obtained. So, let's start with Photoshop, which takes 41 seconds on the one with obtained and one minute and six on the one without if this is your main work program, and you're using it all for the day that time saved is gonna, add up, but just wait until you see Premiere Pro, which takes 24 seconds on the left with obtained and one minute and 54 seconds on the one. Without that is a ridiculous difference and, of course it's not just about loading. These programs, faster obtained laptops, will just feel more responsive on the desktop opening up folders and go into the settings menu. Just everyday desktop stuff will feel quicker and the more you use it and the more reboots it goes through.

It'll get even quicker. Those speed differences between a normal hard drive and an obtain accelerated hard drive, as you just saw, are ridiculous. I didn't expect anything quite like that. So what that means, there's as I say, is that you can still go into a store or online buy a laptop with a big capacity. Hard drive plenty of room for your games or your movies or your files.

Whatever it is, you do have on your laptop, and yet you can still get that SSD speed or at least a responsiveness. So essentially you no longer have to choose between storage capacity, the size of your hard drive and speed. It's kind of the best of both worlds and the best thing is. It doesn't really add to the price when it comes to our piece, we're looking at about a hundred pound premium for a laptop that comes with octane versus one that doesn't, but after promotions and discounts and whatever the retailer is doing. Usually you guys will probably only see a twenty to thirty pound price difference, not much at all for a much, much faster laptop.
