Hands on with iPhone 13 Dummies -- BIG Changes for Pro Max?! By AppleInsider

Welcome everybody to apple insider. It is Andrew here on Twitter at Andrew underscore OSU, and I'm going to give you your first look at the iPhone 13 lineup. I have four dummy units here that are based on the most recent schematics. These are coming from the same source that we sourced last year's dummy units for the iPhone 12 line, and they were spot on. So here we have our iPhone 13 mini our iPhone 13, our iPhone 13 pro and our iPhone 13 pro max. I'm going to compare all four of those to one another, as well as to our iPhone 12 mini iPhone, 12, iPhone, 12 pro and iPhone 12 Pro max so yeah.

Let's just go ahead and dive in and check out all the new phone features, whatever we can see here on the iPhone 13 lineup initial thoughts, as we look at the lineup here is everything is the same in terms of size, the iPhone 12 mini and 13 mini of the same. The iPhone, 12 and iPhone 13 are pretty much the same for the 12 pro and 13 pro, and the 12 pro max and 13 pro max. They all look to have the same size, bunny and dimensions. I don't even I guess, maybe there's a tiny thickness increase on the 12 pro max. It's just a tiny bit thicker, but we'll get into those comparisons in a moment, just from an entire line of perspective, apple's looking to keep the screen size the same going from the mini all the way up to the max.

Let's start here with the iPhone 13 mini. As I said, it's the same size as the iPhone 12 mini and pretty much there's almost no discernible differences from the outside the power buttons there. They look to be located the same spot if we flip it over our mute toggle, our volume toggles, even the sim card tray. All the same. The bottoms look the same here physically.

These guys are very similar. The only real discernible change that we can see that you can obviously see here is the change in the camera. Bump apple did move the flash up. The microphone down and put those uh camera bumps kind of caddy corner to one another in the top left and bottom right, corners of the camera bump, but other than that. These guys look very similar in pretty much every detail as we move up to our iPhone 13 and iPhone 12.

These guys do start to get a little different. So of course, again, the camera bumps caddy corner flash relocated microphone relocated, so the camera bumps again are changing here on the iPhone 13 and on the sides. We do see a few small shifts. It looks like the power button is moving down a little, which could just make it a little easier to grasp from the side. It's not as high up in the air as it was before, and Apple is changing this side, a tiny bit.

Everything is getting shifted down, so you can see. Actually the sim card tray moves up, but the volume rockers and the mute switch toggle there. All that got shifted down just a little on the side of the phone again, maybe just easier to reach, because this is a little of a larger phone 6.1 inches. I believe on the diagonal, so some small shifts there in terms of the buttons on the side bottom top. Everything else is pretty much the same as it was before.

So no other big changes here coming to the iPhone 13. Okay, we got a few more changes on our iPhone 13 pro, so camera module, big jump in camera, module size. We've seen this in some leaked cases, and now we're seeing here in these dummy units. But I mean just look at how much bigger the camera module is on the new iPhone 13 pro it's a big step up in terms of the size of cameras, the actual camera modules themselves are bigger, this top one here. This is for the zoom lens, and it is still smaller.

This looks like it's staying the same size, but the wide and ultra-wide they both look they're bigger than they were before, so maybe we're having just bigger modules for the for those two, but the zoom looks to be staying the same size here on the iPhone 13 pro in terms of buttons and everything again, just like we saw with the iPhone 13. Our power button slid down a little, and we saw a small shift on this side as well. The iPhone 13 and 13 pro, just like the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12. They're, pretty much the same size, chassis with just the big difference being the type of metal used and those camera bumps. So that's what we're seeing they look pretty similar this year, just for that camera bump change on the outside.

Lastly, we have our iPhone 13 pro max the biggest one of them all and check out this change in the camera bumps. There's a noticeable increase in the size in all these camera modules, between the two, the 13 pro max. All three of them are larger than they are on the iPhone 12 Pro max. So apple definitely looks to be upgrading the cameras and all three cameras at that on the iPhone 12 Pro max. If we look at the physical changes here, not much on the mac side, it looks like our power button is staying where it is uh and even on this side we see a small change in where the sim card is going.

It's moving up a tiny bit, but other than that everything is staying as it was on the larger phone. Just you can see the differences here. This is our iPhone 13 pro, and this is our iPhone 13 pro max. So the camera bumps themselves are the same physical size, but you can see the difference in that tell lens it's much bigger on the pro max than it is on the pro, so apple sticking with that better zoom lens, it appears on the iPhone 13 pro max, just like apple, has a better tell lens on the iPhone 12 Pro max than the iPhone 12. One more change that we can find is this is my iPhone 12 Pro max and if you look at where that camera and the notch is as well as where the headphone cut is the headphone cutout is right there above my finger.

I got like the light boosted here. It's still just so hard to see um, but they're there, it's just down a little from the top, whereas on the iPhone 13 line, all the phones have the microphone right there at the top. The tippy top edge is where the speaker is, and you can see the camera cut out there, and I can't tell based on, like the know, the screen, because they're dummy units, so they're not full, but the notch up here is smaller in the shadow. I don't know if that's a for sure thing, but they've at least redesigned it a little to move the earpiece cut out towards the top versus being in the center of that notch. So you could see a smaller notch here on the new devices.

I mentioned this at the beginning and I still not 100, but it appears that the iPhone 13 pro max and the iPhone 13 pro are slightly thicker than their predecessors. This is my iPhone 12 Pro max the 13 pro max. It's just a tiny bit thicker. When I run my fingers between the two, I can feel it bumping. I don't have calipers on hand, so I can't measure how much of a difference, but I'd say maybe a millimeter or so, or a half millimeter to a millimeter in difference between the iPhone 12 and 12, the 12 pro 12 pro max and the 13 pro and 13 pro max.

So yeah, that's what we can discern so far from these dummy units. We can see that redesigned front a little. We can see the redesign camera modules, but other than that, there's not a ton that we can discern just from the hardware point of view from this outside. These should be pretty darn accurate based on the accuracy of previous year's models. So it's going to be curious to see how this actually pans outcome September.
