Google Pixel 5 Unboxing & First Impressions

Hey everyone, my name's jack, I'm a designer and video maker living in London, and today I'm going to be unboxing. The Google Pixel 5. I'm also going to be doing my first impressions and kind of few opinions just on the device, as I open it, and take a look at it, I'll, probably test out some features as well, such as the reverse wireless charging, because I think that's pretty cool right so pulling in the peel tabs uh. So a lot of people are talking about the Google Pixel 5 this year, mainly because of its lower price. Uh google seemed to be taking a different angle at their flagship for this year, which is fine. For me, I've been a pixel user for uh three years.

I've the pixel 2 and then before that I used like google nexus phones. So a lower price is good for me because I was probably going to buy it anyway uh. So I should probably preface this video that I am very biased about pixels. I think that's sick. So here it is.

I got the black version, as you can see uh, because I'm putting a case on it. I didn't go for the sage version, just because I thought like little hints of green, showing through the case weren't, going to um kind of look that great but um yeah, it's pretty cool, looking device already, though, I'm getting a lot of fingerprints on this back, it's like they appear for a second, maybe it's because I just taken a shower and my fingers are still wet, but yeah. That's a bit odd, but uh the moment every smartphone fan loves is taking off this and having a clean scratch-free phone for about five seconds before you cover it and fingerprints. Um, I'm slightly interested just to see what else they've included in the box, because a big talking point at the moment is apple, getting rid of the plug for their phone and also making the box extremely thin. This isn't exactly a massive box so just to see how much box sizes have changed in the past three years.

Uh. This is the pixel 2 XL box on the right and the pixel 5 box on the left and not really a big difference, so I think uh, what apple have done is kind of they're doing on their own. I don't think google have followed this year, but maybe next year we'll see much thinner boxes which supposedly is for more eco-friendly packaging, but more than likely it's just so they can ship more ship, more phones at once for cheaper, probably a good business move by them, uh so yeah. It's got some manuals, uh cables, adapters and charger, nothing interesting uh, and if you own, like a pixel phone already uh like I do these are things you already have. So I guess it's always good to have spares, though.

So, let's take a good look at the phone, so uh it's got a very clean front, especially compared to I just punched my monitor what was that about compared to the pixel 2 XL, which has like a big chin and a big like forehead at the top. This is completely removed that it's only got a very small bezel around the front of the screen. It's got like a hole, punch camera at the top left. You can't actually see that, while the phone's off and then there's that camera module at the back, that is extremely bright. I don't think my camera is going to adapt to that.

Oh, yeah. It is a quick note on the camera. I've actually just purchased a canon m50, and this is my first video recording on it. So apologies if the lighting and audio and everything isn't ideal in this video, because I literally opened it a few hours ago and haven't kind of worked out what settings look best on it, so hopefully, in the future, much higher quality videos to come, which is the reason why I bought it. My last three videos were actually recorded on the pixel 2 XL, and it doesn't have the best video quality.

To be honest, there is a lot of talk that video quality is better on this. It has better image stabilization and also, I think, since the pixel 3, the camera sensors have been improved so once you've connected to your Wi-Fi. If I get the focus on this, you have this funky animation, getting your phone ready. So, while I'm waiting for that, I'm just going to open up this case that I bought. So it's a sign case.

My last few cases, I've used have all been sign, and I've generally had no problem with them, they're a lot cheaper than the official google cases, and they offer lots of protection, and they're pretty slim. So let's take a look at how this is on the device, I'm pretty keen not to damage my phone this time, because if you can see this on the pixel 2xl on this corner, you can see it's pretty badly. Cracked. As you can see, the pixel 5 actually fits inside kind of the body of the pixel 2 XL, so um first impressions are that I actually prefer this smaller size. It feels a lot more comfortable in the hand.

I'd always use the back uh fingerprint scanner to do my notifications, just because stretching up to the top of the phone was pretty challenging, so I've just finished setting up the device, I'm actually a huge fan of these tiny bezels, even with a case uh, it really feels edge to edge. I'm sure I can demonstrate that a bit better with a brighter colored background, then you can see just how like edge to edge the display is with that hole punch in the top left um. Speaking of the camera. I know a lot of people um, probably disappointed that they don't have any kind of like face ID or face unlock on this phone. I think that was probably a decision to keep the price lower.

Furthermore, I also wonder if maybe because this year, a lot of people are wearing kind of masks and stuff, a fingerprint scanner might be a bit more useful, especially when going out and about for me, it's not a massive issue, because I haven't actually owned a phone with a face unlock, but maybe, if someone's coming from the pixel 4 or maybe from an iPhone they'll, really miss that feature. So a few things I want to try out just because they're kind of exciting for me: uh one's the reverse wireless charging, so I've got my Samsung Galaxy buds plus here, and I'm just going to place them on the back, and they didn't seem to be charging. Maybe that's because I'm using a case I'd be a bit disappointed if it didn't work through the case no doesn't seem to be working, so I'm just going to check. If reverse wireless charging needs to be enabled in the settings, so there doesn't seem to be any settings for wireless charging. So I guess I just doesn't work with the Samsung buds I'll do a bit of research and put like an annotation or something if it does work, and I'm just being stupid, but so future jack here it turns out.

I was just being stupid. Uh if you type in battery share in the settings on the Google Pixel 5, there's a toggle to enable battery share, which is another name for reverse wireless charging. You flip it over. You put your earphones on, and it's charging as you can see from the red light anyway back to the video, and the other thing I want to try out is some video recordings. Just because, as I mentioned uh, I do quite like taking videos on my phone um, so I'm just going to switch over to recording from this.

So I'll also use the audio from the pixel 5 um, just to see how it compares to using the microphone that's on the camera. This is also quite an interesting test for me, because I've only just got this microphone and camera set up. So I want to see like the differences between this phone, at least on the display of the pixel 5. This video looks really impressive and very smooth. I think the image stabilization is a bit um over the top.

I find I'm kind of turning a corner, and it jolts quite quickly because it's just trying to keep it as smooth as possible, but yeah. This is this. Is my camera set up at the moment? Uh I need to get a proper tripod um just so I can be a bit more versatile with the type of shots I'm doing. Uh. I've also got a lot of mess.

You don't want to see what's kind of behind me on my bed, it's just a bunch of empty boxes, um but yeah. It looks good like very, very over the top in image stabilization but wow. That is a very close focus. I'm impressed by that very cool, so I'll be using this phone, ideally for the next few years, but I'll definitely be doing more videos on it. I'm more than likely gonna kind of do a video about Google's like three-year software update cycles.

So I'll probably take these two phones kind of look how the pixel 2 XL is doing after three years of software updates um see if you can kind of keep on using this for more years to come, or if three years is the ideal time in the pixel lineup to upgrade I'll, probably also do a full review and maybe further down the line I'll do a kind of six months later, video about the pixel 5 lots of videos to come about the pixel 5. So if you're interested in that, please do subscribe. That's enough, rambling from me! Thank you very much for watching this video, and hopefully I'll see you in the next one.
