Hey everybody hopes you guys are all doing safe. So I have it here. This is the Xiaomi me mix fold. So this is the china retail unit. I did not get this from Xiaomi. Once again, I got this from my friend, Simon of trinity, in the Chinese he's Hong Kong's, like number one best fastest importer, this phone isn't even on sale officially in China yeah.
I think it goes on sale on the 16th, but he's already had it in Hong Kong. I don't know how he does it man but anyway. So this is not a review, because I've only had the phone for about two hours- and I have to give this back to Simon later tonight, because there are people lining up to buy this, but let's go over the hardware, really quick, so on the outside. You have a 6.5 inch, OLED display. This is a 27 by 9 aspect ratio.
So it is quite long and narrow, just like the galaxy z4 2. Now some people like this because it actually allows you to use the phone with one hand quite easily. I do find that when you're typing it feels slightly cramped but still passable. Now this is a 90 hertz refresh panel and I find animations to be quite zippy and fluid because me UI, I, like my UI, it's quite well optimized now on the inside. You have an eight-inch display now, disappointingly, this is only a 60 hertz refresh rate.
So now animations look noticeably slower to my eyes. I know you're seeing a little of flickering right now, but that's just my camera's shutter speed. If I look it up in my eyes, I cannot see anything now also, unfortunately, as you can probably already see, there's a crease down the middle of the screen, just like on the gauss's e42. Now you know even three months ago, I would think a crease down the middle of a screen is fine, that's just how foldable phones have to be right. After all, Samsung's two thousand dollar phones has increased too, but then Huawei came along and gave us the mate x2, and this phone doesn't really have a visible crease.
I mean you can't find it if you go extreme like right. Now you see it, but if you're just looking at it straight ahead a little to the side, you don't see the crease at all, and you don't really feel it when you run your finger through it. I cannot say that about the meme x4, you do feel and see the crease quite a bit easier. Now inside the phone is a snapdragon triple eight, with either 12 or 16 gigs of ram and 256 or 512 gigs of internal storage. You know pretty standard stuff.
Let's look at this camera system. You have a triple camera array, so this is a 108 megapixel main camera, with a one over 1.52 inch image sensor. For the most part, it behaves like most Xiaomi cameras. It has a relatively shallow depth of field. So that means, when you take a picture, you get a nice little creamy both around shutter speed is fast.
Focusing time is fast and it handles dynamic range. Quite well, even though right now, I'm shooting against backlight down. Here you have a 13 megapixel, ultra-wide angle, camera and up top. This is new. This is an 8 megapixel liquid lens.
So this is a new technology self developed by Xiaomi. So liquid lens is basically the lens inside changes shape, so it can do different things. So what it means is. This is one lens that can do two things. It is both a macro lens and a three times telephoto zoom lens.
So that means when you're taking three times, zoom shots, it's lossless optical quality, and you can get up to 10 times, still get a pretty respectable digital zoom, and it maxes out at 30 times digital zoom. Now the overall design is very similar to zfo2, like the bezels around the screen are quite similar. Even the hinge look familiar and when you fold the phone there is a slight gap in the remix fold, just like on the zoo 2. So right now you might be thinking that means the mix.2 still has better hardware um. Technically, yes, it does.
It has thinner, bezels and the phone folds completely flush. It's also thinner the main x2 measures, 14.7 millimeter, the mix photo measures, 17.2 millimeter. To be honest, it's not that big, a difference in your pocket, but then one thing I have to remind you guys is that you have to take into context other factors. So the first is price. The Huawei mates 2 is selling for 18 000 Chinese yuan.
That comes out to 2 700 us dollars. The mix fold starts at 999 Chinese yuan, which comes up to 1 500 us dollars. So that means the mi mix. Fold is 1 200 us dollars cheaper than the Huawei makes 2. That's almost the price of a new iPhone or a new galaxy s21 ultra and due to government interference.
The Huawei mates 2 cannot run google apps unless you hack the phone, which I cannot recommend doing the Xiaomi mix fold has no such problem. Now. This is a china retail unit, so it does not ship with Google apps out of the box, but you can install google really easily. You just have to jump into Xiaomi's app store right here and search for Google play, and you can install google play directly via the Xiaomi app store now, despite the meme x4 being a little heavy at 317 grams. So far the phone still feels quite comfortable to hold.
You know, maybe it's just because I've only been using it for two hours. Maybe if I've been using it for nine hours, I would feel the weight, but I do like that. The phone's rounded on this on the sides, and also the top and bottom and the hinge area right here at the corner. It's rounded this is one of the relatively annoying things about the z42. This hinge corner right here is sharp, so when I hold the phone in one hand, this part the hinge corner digs into my palm, it doesn't hurt, but it's not comfortable.
Now one of the cool features about the Xiaomi mix phone is that Xiaomi built a desktop version of its phone software called PC mode and when they demo that it was pretty easy, you just have to swipe with three fingers, and it'll immediately jump into this desktop mode. For some reason, I've been unable to get PC mode running on this phone. I keep swiping with three fingers. Nothing has happened. I dove into settings looked through everything I could not find PC mode and Simon who has multiple units of this phone.
He says that he and all his friends also cannot find PC mode on this phone. So what I'm thinking is PC mode may not be ready. Yet it's not shipping with the retail units of the phone, and it will come later fire a software update. That's the only explanation I can think of so. Let's check out some camera comparison like I said I only have a very short time this phone, so this is not an in-depth comparison, not a review, but for the most part I like the camera of the meme phone.
Is it better than the camera of the Huawei Mate x2? No, it is not because Huawei makes 2's 50 megapixel sensor, posing more light than the sensor and also the Huawei max 2 has a real 10 times, periscope zoom lens. So if you zoom beyond 10x you're, going to see a difference, but then again the max 2 is so much more expensive and the fact that I cannot run google really limits. Its appeal, like probably 95 percent of people on earth, cannot use this phone. So we might have to put this phone aside and just compare the remix fold against the galaxy z4 2. And we're just comparing this way.
Then the makes folds. Camera has a longer zoom that produces a sharper image at 3x, 10x 5x, whatever you want. Its main camera has a larger image sensor size than the relatively measly 12 megapixel sensor. Here, the only area where the z42 wins is in ultra-wide angle, camera. It has a wider field of view and just handles dynamic range, a little better.
In my opinion, oh and if you use the Xiaomi mi 11 on the m11 ultra, you know that those phones have really, really damn good speakers, arguably the best in the industry, because they're allowed the full, and they're tuned by Harman Kardon. So I'm happy to report that the mix fold has those same speakers actually maybe better speakers, because there are four speaker grilles two on the top two on the bottom. So when you're playing videos, it gets loud as hell, so yeah. Overall, I'm very excited about the mix fold. You guys know me: I've always been a believer of foldable.
You know I love going on Instagram, just looking at your know, just surfing Instagram on a larger screen. Everything looks so good and, like I said you know when I can travel again, I definitely will need to carry a foldable phone with me to do work now. I know that the mix fold in terms of the overall hardware package- it really doesn't offer anything really new other than the liquid lens, that's new, but then other than that you look at the screen. The way it folds all that we've seen it before, but what Xiaomi is doing is still noteworthy, because Xiaomi is basically pushing the price of foldable phones down. Remember when affordable phones first came out, people complained that they were too fragile and too expensive.
The Xiaomi mix 2 kind of proved that foldable phones are not really fragile. I use this phone for seven months now and the hinge is still super sturdy without any issues and then the Xiaomi mi mix fold, this phone costs 1 500. That's not that far off from what we pay for a regular slap smartphone. So that means we're only maybe another half a year away from foldable phone prices going down even more when it drops to maybe one thousand dollars like 900 dollars. That means foldable phones will be cheap enough for regular consumers for the masses to consume.
So, even though this phone isn't groundbreaking and design hardware, particularly for me who already have these two phones, it is still very noteworthy. I actually think Xiaomi is our model innovation for everyone which is written on here. It's very apt because Xiaomi is making affordable phones available for everybody, one thousand five hundred dollars. It's a hell lot more affordable than two thousand seven hundred dollars.
