Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 5G First Look Review

This is Lisa from mobile tech review and, as you might guess, this is the Samsung Galaxy z, fold, 2 5g boy. They took a simple name and made it way complex there didn't they. So it's the second generation of the galaxy fold phone that goes from being a smartphone-like device to turning into a tablet. And if you watch my channel, you know that I own the original fold and then a couple of videos about that one. So I'm pretty excited about this one. This is a first look.

I've only had this for two days, and I'm going to have a full review right around release. Time, which is September 18th after I've, had a lot more time to test it, but given the fact that I've been a fold user since the beginning, I have a lot to say about this: we're going to look at it now, so, first, the basic factoids behind this. Yes, it's still too expensive, which is the biggest con. This thing is 19.99 2 000, so that's within 20 of the old fold price and given the fact that it has improvements that probably cost Samsung some more money, they get it back by not including anything like buds, plus or buds live, or anything like that. In the box, the first gen you got some wireless earbuds, not anymore.

In fact, you just get the fast charger, 25 watt and the USB cable in the box, now no little thin, armed case or anything like that, even so, there's that it has the snapdragon, 865 plus processors, the latest and greatest 5g processor and that's worldwide. So no like, oh, I got a nose because I live in Germany or something like that. I think a lot of people are going to be happy about that and for a phone, that's expensive. You want the fastest processor and currently that's the snapdragon 865 plus this is a 5g phone, and it does low mid and millimeter wave. So it got you covered in the United States, where I am the big three major carriers offer it T-Mobile, which also means sprint.

Now too, a t and Verizon, or you can buy it- unlocked if you hate bloatware the way that I do and the unlock one will work on all those carriers. In fact, I'm using it on T-Mobile right now, and I've tested it on ATT as well and 5g works and voice over LTE and Wi-Fi calling works on T-Mobile as well. I don't see any option for that at t anyway. That's the basics right there, the other thing to be aware of compared to the original fold that one came with 512 gigs of storage this and no micro SD card slot. This one still has no micro SD card slot and only has 256 gigs of storage.

Now Samsung said that's because when they surveyed users, most of them never even use 128 gigs, because everybody streamed stuff, I guess and all that. Well, I leave it up to you to decide because well no micro, SD card, you have to live with the 256 gigs. It has 12 gigs of ram, which is capacious and is great. The big change to me. Well, first off aesthetically speaking, this thing is drop dead gorgeous.

It's unfairly pretty much like the note 20 ultra is so. The first generation was to my mind, much as I love that phone and ugly duckling, so this one has the front screen is completely it's borderless, so no more little teeny, 5.6 or seven-inch screen whatever it was, with a humongous border top and bottom on the front screen. Now it's the full Monty, it's 6.2 inches, it's still relatively tall and narrow. So it's a little awkward for things like using the on-screen keyboard that still feels a little cramped to me. But then again I even find a pixel for a little cramped.

I don't use tiny phones a lot, but nonetheless that OLED exterior display now feels usable, whereas before I almost kept my fold open all the time whenever I could this one, I can actually close it and not feel disadvantaged in the least when you do open it up. The display is even bigger this time and the device is a little wider opened up. So it's 7.6 inches now. So that's really nice! It's about you're, getting close to the size of an iPad Mini screen. At this point, the only drawback is- and this is going to be highly personal depending on the size of your hands.

Now I have really long fingers and big hands for a woman, well I'm tall and with six feet, but I can actually hold the fold open easily. I would walk around like it was my pacifier all the time with it in my hand, open. I never had a problem. This one has gotten just wide enough that I can still hold it, but I don't feel as secure about it. So that's something only you can decide, depending on the size of your hands, your comfort level, how you want to use it.

Maybe you don't think you're ever going to walk around holding it one-handed or something like that anyway, and it's using ultra-thin glass, just like the Galaxy Z, flip and flip 5g, so they've learned really fast in the year between the original fold and this one and a lot of what we saw in the z-flip has come over. So ultra-thin glass is one of those things. So yes, there's still a polymer layer on top and in fact, a screen protector too, with a slight matte sheen to it, which I like cuts glare, but anyway, it feels more like glass, and it looks less wavy kind of ripply the way the original fold did, so it's flatter. It feels glass-like and yay that, and also it has a 120 hertz refresh rate, and that is noticeable, and I don't see any jelly scrolling or if it's there, it's really slight. Now my original fault, with software updates got a little better.

It used to be really egregious the left hand. Side of the screen didn't keep up with the right hand, side of the screen when scrolling up and down, and that seems to be gone by the way the outer display is 60 hertz, I'm okay with that looks fine. The crease down the center of the screen is a little wider and deeper this, because ultra-thin glass has a pre-bent radius in the center of it. So if you really hate creases, which you really don't see straight on, but still this one is actually more prominent than the original fold. So that's the basics, that's what you need to know so gorgeous looking design a front screen.

That is pretty much what everybody wanted, and also inside the big raised plastic bezels around the edge of the screen that protected it and held the top layer in place. So nobody tried to peel it off anymore, that's gone too, so it looks really way more pretty and premium and not like a beta product and the front cameras are the inner cameras that are on the main inner display, no more big notch and camera cluster and all that sort of thing you've got the usual. Oh, whole kind of camera, single camera, 10, 10, megapixel and there's also one on the outer screen. So you've got a selfie camera either way. The only drawback is actually it's with the original fold.

It's pretty easy to close it because there were the bezels to push onto and to close it and with this one, because it's just about no bezels on the inner display. I always accidentally activate something on screen, while I'm in the middle of closing it. We still have continuity here between the inner and the outer screen for most applications. So that's nice, say you're reading something on the front screen, and you decide you want the bigger view, just open up the phone. If it's the web browser or your email or something like that and that works.

We have the z flips hinge too, which is a good thing. It's a very nice hinge, not just because it has a little dust, cleaner, thingy inside the little brushes, but because it opens at a variety of angles and stays there much like a laptop hinge one. So it makes it more versatile if you want to prop it up on the desk kind of like laptop mode and use the bottom section as a keyboard area, for example, or whatever it is, or if you even want to prop it up upright with just the slightest bend. So you can read, set it on the desk, while you're eating your breakfast cereal. You know it's its nice, it's very nice Samsung has the usual app pairings.

Let's say you want to have YouTube on one side and the web browser on the right side. You get the idea, so there's multitasking here and Samsung has been doing that for years, even like on note phones and on their tablets, but with screens even up to this size. I find I don't use it that much. I think this is one place where the Surface Duo and the two physical screens that are wider kind of make more sense, to give you more room to spread out with each app on each side, but we'll see when I review the Surface Duo soon, how I really feel about that phone uh. This has a 4500 William battery and 25 watt fast charging, which is good faster than the previous generation, and I need more than two days to play with this phone before I can tell you how the battery life is doing, but so far it's looking sort of, like the Galaxy Z flip to the z, flip 5g, with the same processor, and not much of a change in battery life, but more times required.

Likewise, for the cameras, we have three cameras on the rear yay. We got the telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom. We have the main, and we have the ultra-wide camera on the back. All of them are 12 megapixels and yes, there are improved uh and yes, it sticks out a little like the note, so it makes it wobble on the desk a little, but not as big as the note 20 ultras ginormous domino glue to the back kind of thing, but right now we're having monsoon season here for three days, so I've been able to take a lot of good pictures except for low light and low light is definitely improved, but look to my full review, which again will come before September 18th. So I can tell you more about the camera, so that's the Galaxy Z fold, tube 5g available in your choice of mystic bronzer mystic black matte finish by the way.

But since you got the shiny slippery screen on this side, it doesn't help as much with the grip. Yes, there are customizable hinges. Colors gold, red blue, takes another five weeks waiting for that, but anyway, first impressions are. It is everything that we asked for. First impressions and lasting impressions are it's a very expensive phone.

This is still for early adopters and techie types, because two thousand dollars for a phone ouch, at least for mobile tech review, be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel, because we will have a full review coming and thumbs up. If you liked this video.
