Samsung Galaxy J2 - Review (Metro by T-Mobile/MetroPCS)

Hi everyone- this is Kevin breeze here coming at you with my review of the Samsung Galaxy j2 for Metro by T-Mobile. So let's get started now. I do want to point out that there are multiple versions of this device available. So there's an unlocked version. There are versions of this device being sold all over the world, but this specific version of the Samsung Galaxy j2 is the Metro by T-Mobile version. Now, I'm, not sure how this is different from the other versions.

There might be a lot in common. They might have everything in common I'm, not sure, but I just want to let you know that I've been using the Metro by T-Mobile version of the phone. So if you're looking to buy this through Metro by T-Mobile, then just know that you've come to the right place. Another great thing about this device and I- don't know this could change in the future, but currently there's a great deal going on with Metro by T-Mobile, and if you get a $60 plan and pay for the tax and activation fees, then you can get this phone for free. So that's really cool.

Now, if you don't do the $60 plan- and you want to do a cheaper plan- I'm, not sure if they give you a discount on the device or if you have to pay for it in full, but worst case scenario, if you do have to pay for this in full, then the MSRP, for it is one hundred and forty-nine dollars and ninety-nine cents and, in my opinion, and I'll, be diving more into this throughout the video I think that price tag in itself is worth it for this device, so getting it for free is just yet another awesome bonus. Now this device features a 5-inch display, and its resolution is actually a little lower than 720p, which is a little of a downer. The resolution of this display is 540 by 960. Now, one of the great things, though, about the display is that it features Corning Gorilla Glass, which is a premium glass, and it's gonna, be a lot stronger than the glass that you find on other smartphones out there. So that's kind of a great surprise to see with a budget smartphone like this.

Normally you don't get Gorilla Glass with a budget phone, especially a phone that you can get for free from your carrier, so props to Samsung for including Corning Gorilla Glass with this device. Now the aspect ratio of this display is sixteen by nine, which is the standard aspect ratio that you find on most televisions now for a long time. Sixteen by nine was the standard, but with recent devices they've been coming out, they featured taller displays and a resolution of 18 by nine or even nineteen by nine. So this is still kind of the old-school resolution here and another thing that's old-school about the Samsung Galaxy j2 is that we have very large bezels on the top and bottom. You know nowadays, a lot of devices like I mentioned before have that taller aspect ratio but also feature a notch.

Of course, there's no notch to be found with the Samsung Galaxy j2, and really these bezels are quite large. The design of this device really looks like something you'd find in 2015. So it's a little disappointing. I do kind of wish that this design was a little different. A little more modern, but then again it is a free device.

If you do that $60 plan. So how much can you really ask for at that price range? Another great thing, too, is that if you're just looking for a device that works, and you're not looking for something that looks like a really modern phone- and you just want- you know something practical, then this will still get the job done. I mean I know for me personally, when I use this device having these large bezels on the top and bottom, don't really bother me at all, and still the phone is quite small and nice and compact I mean I, have decently large hands, but still the device feels good in the hand it doesn't over crowd. My pocket and overall, it's just a comfortable device to use and again, like I mentioned it has that Corning Gorilla Glass. So if you drop the phone for some reason, the likelihood of cracking the glass on the display won't be as big of a deal now.

Of course, you can always go out and buy different accessories for this, like screen protectors. In cases and I always highly recommend doing that now, of course, this display isn't the best display I've ever seen on a smartphone. I actually have the brightness up at full blast. You can see it's still not extremely bright, but it still looks good enough and holding this close up to the camera, you can kind of get a better idea of the resolution here. Of course, it is a little on the grainy err side.

It's not nearly as sharp as a 1080p display, that's for sure, but it still looks good I mean still usable if you're going to be using this to browse the web or send text messages or even watch videos. You're not gonna, have a problem with the resolution here. It's still good enough to go through with your everyday life. Now up top here we have the five megapixel front-facing camera, and it's actually a pretty good camera. You can take clear, looking selfies with that front-facing camera and the front-facing camera on this device is actually better than some $200 devices that I've used in the past, so I think Samsung definitely chose a good camera here.

So don't be discouraged by the fact that it's only 5 megapixels, because megapixel count isn't always the most important thing out there. I've used other devices where they have 20 megapixel front-facing cameras and the quality isn't as good as the front-facing camera on the galaxy j2. So just keep that in mind. Now this device features 16 gigabytes of internal storage, with 9 gigabytes of that being available to the user I'm, assuming the 7 gigabytes. That's not available is for the software and everything else and all the preinstalled applications on this device.

So you'll just have to deal with that. Now. If you want to expand the storage on the Samsung Galaxy j2, then you're always welcome to buy a micros card, and you can insert this into the device and expand that storage. Essentially as much as you want. This device does not feature a fingerprint sensor, and it doesn't feature face ID.

So if you want to keep your device secure, you're going to be limited to using a pin code which isn't really terrible I mean it's totally fine, really, there's also no wireless charging with this device and the rear camera. Here are 8 megapixels now, just like the front-facing camera, the rear camera actually isn't that bad I'll pull it up here and give you a closer look. You can see here, you can get nice and close to whatever you want. Has nice autofocus and the shutter speed is really quick as well now. Another great thing about this camera here is that you get a lot of different options, so you get a bunch of different modes like continuous shot.

You get a special sticker mode, which is kind of different there's, an auto mode, which of course is kind of the standard. There's beauty mode which can kind of smooth out different people's faces and stuff there's pro mode, which gives you a bunch of other options such as adjusting the ISO and white balance and there's panorama, so that's great to see as well. So really a full-fledged feature, packed camera application here with the Samsung Galaxy j2, which is always great to see now video this device maxes out at 1080p at 30 frames per second, which is certainly competitive, and you can take videos on the fly here and record and everything, and then you can play that content back really easily as well. Just like you can pretty much any phone for that matter, I suppose there you go, so that was a little clip I took with this, but all in all the cameras are solid on this device. Of course, they're.

Nothing like the cameras you'd find on a more expensive device like the Samsung, Galaxy, S 10, but still I mean this device is significantly cheaper. So you really get what you pay for now. The device features 2 gigabytes of RAM, which I wish there's more than 2 gigabytes.2 gigabytes really isn't that much for RAM, but it is still good enough to do basic tasks such as make phone calls type out, text messages and browse the web. You'll also be able to watch videos on here with no problem now this device features a 1.4, gigahertz, quad-core processor I couldn't find anywhere. What specific processor is inside this device? I'm pretty sure it's a Qualcomm processor, but regardless it's a good processor.

It gets the job done. You know, you'll have no problem doing most basic tasks here on the device. Of course, don't expect to do any hardcore gaming or anything like that, but just for essential normal tasks. You'll be fine. The device features a 2600 William hour battery, which is a pretty impressive amount and the software that runs on the Samsung Galaxy j2 is Android 8.1 Oreo, but you also have Samsung's skin on here. So it's kind of a special Samsung experience, and you'll have to decide whether you think that's a good thing or a bad thing.

Personally. I think Samsung does a pretty good job at optimizing their software, so you shouldn't worry too much about the device being slow and bloated because it's not now, let's go over the preinstalled software here, so we'll swipe up and go to the app drawer, of course, to get all the Google applications preinstalled, that's kind of a normal thing that you'll find with every Android phone, because they're required to put these on here in order to license Android. We also have a metro by T-Mobile folder, with app store device, unlock look-out metro zone by metro and mobile hotspot. There's a Samsung folder as well with the Galaxy app store files, Samsung health and Samsung notes. There's the calendar, app camera o'clock, contacts, email gallery, internet messages, phone play, music play store, settings play movie and TV Samsung members name ID, and that's it so not a lot of bloatware.

Here. Of course, Samsung does like to put on their own bloatware, but I've seen way worse bloatware in the past, especially bloatware for like totally random things like the NBA app or the NFL app. Of course, those apps are great for the people that actually want them, but having unnecessary bloatware that you're never going to want to use at all is never a good thing. So it's good to see that the galaxy j2u doesn't have a lot of that. Now, let's take a look at the actual hardware itself.

Of course, I already went over the front here. You know the device has a 5-inch display the resolution of 540 by 960 up top here of the earpiece, and we have the front-facing camera then below. We have the Samsung logo and of course we have these very large bezels here on the left side of the device. We have the volume buttons on the right side of the device. Furthermore, we have the power button on the top we've the noise-cancelling microphone on the bottom.

Furthermore, we have the microUSB port, we have the microphone, and we have the 3.5 millimeter headphone jack. So if you love using your traditional 3.5 millimeter headphones, then you're really going to like the Galaxy J 2, then on the back side. Here with the camera module, which is 8 megapixels, we have the flash and the Samsung logo. We also have a small little pocket here, which is home to the speaker. Now.

This material here on the back is kind of a piano black plastic material, and it does look good, but the only problem with it is that it really soaks up, sweat and grease and different things like that, and you really have to constantly be keeping it clean. So I'm not a huge fan of this material here on the back of the device, but it's not terrible either and I. Suppose if you use a case and really won't even matter at all what material is on here now you can pop off the back here and access the SIM card slot the battery and the SD and the SD card slot. So you can see here is the battery itself. Then we have the slot here for the SIM card and micros card now.

What's cool is about this removable battery? Is that if you want to buy multiple batteries you can and if you're, on, like a long camping trip or something like that, then you can just pop out your old battery if it's about to die and put in your new battery, so it gives you kind of another charging option there if you think that's necessary or if you think you're gonna actually use that to your advantage. So we'll throw the back on here again and that's kind of a rare thing nowadays having these removable batteries, you don't see it a lot, so I'm glad that Samsung still has it at least on this device as I think it's a great feature to have. Overall, let's now try watching some YouTube videos on the device for 16 megapixels, so video viewing on the Samsung Galaxy j2, certainly isn't bad I mean I could easily watch hours of video content on here if I chose to, and it's really not a bad experience at all. Of course, if the display was a little higher in resolution, that would never be a bad thing, but still for what it is. It's not bad at all for watching videos and the speaker sounds good, and I had it at full blast when I was doing this test, and it sounded relatively clear, not as clear as the iPhone or the Galaxy S 10, but still clear enough that it doesn't bother you now here is the box for the Samsung Galaxy j2u.

So when you get it, this is pretty much what your in beginning with the Metro by T-Mobile logo on the bottom. Here we have a picture of the actual device there in the middle and then on the back side. We have the specifications for the device which I've pretty much gone over throughout this video inside the box. In addition to the actual device itself, you're going to get a quick reference manual, you're going to get a Samsung branded wall, adapter, and you're going to get the microUSB port for charging and data transfer. So let's now go over whether I think this device is worth it.

So, in my opinion, if you can get this for free with that $60 plan, then it's certainly worth it, but if you actually have to pay the full 149 dollars, then I wouldn't there's much better options out there especially unlocked smartphones such as the blue, Vito, XL for and other ones in that price range, then essentially for the same price. As this you can get a better device. So if you have to pay that full $149 I wouldn't get, this I would get something else instead. But if you are getting this for free by signing up for the $60 plan with metro by T-Mobile, then I certainly do think it's a good deal. The best thing about the Samsung Galaxy j2 is that it's going to work.

Well, that's the most important thing about it: it's going to be a reliable device. Of course. Samsung is a reliable brand. It's been around for a long time, and this thing will ask you for at least a few years without being obsolete. So it's certainly not a terrible choice, but it's also not necessarily the best deal if you do have to pay 149 dollars.

So I hope you enjoyed my review of the Samsung Galaxy j2. If you have this device, let me know what you think about it in the comments section below also, if you have any suggestions on other videos, you'd like me to do about the Samsung Galaxy j2, then I'd love to do those.
