Samsung Galaxy A52 vs. A51 Comparison! Worth The Upgrade? (Absolutely!)

What's going on guys, my name is wade with tech daily and in this video we are gonna, be comparing the new Samsung Galaxy a52 to last year's Samsung Galaxy a51. Now, if you're, just looking for the straight answer to the question, should you upgrade? The answer is absolutely yes, you should get this new a52. It offers a ton of great new features that definitely makes it worth it. I'm going to talk about all that new stuff, the improvements and everything else you need to know in this video with that being said, though, I also still think the a51 is a fantastic device and with the a52 out now, you could potentially get this phone instead for an even cheaper price than ever before, which still makes it a great buy too. There's obviously a lot to talk about here, so I won't waste any more time. Let's just go ahead and get into it and see what these two phones have to offer now, just to set things straight.

I do want to quickly mention that these are both the standard versions of the a51 and a52, not the 5g versions. I'll have separate videos for those devices, but for now for this video, these are the regular standard international models of these devices physically at least at first glance. Both these phones look pretty similar size, wise they're, both 6.5 inch devices, that's the screen size, and they are about the same height and width, maybe a millimeter or two of a difference, but nothing really noticeable across the front. The design is nearly identical too. You've got the same hole, punch, camera cut out up top relatively thin bezels and a subtle, larger bottom chin down below.

However, you might be able to tell that the new a52 actually has slightly thicker black borders all around the display. The screen to body ratio on this new phone has decreased just a bit, but in my opinion the difference is barely noticeable, and I don't really consider it a huge deal. While the front of these phones look pretty similar around back, you can see we do get a whole new design for the a52. This new phone now mimics the rest of Samsung's flagship lineup with a matte plastic finish as opposed to that glossy rainbow plastic on the a51, and actually the new a52 has a totally different form factor and feel as well. It's thicker it's boxier, it's a little heavier too.

It's definitely a more beefy feeling phone in the hand, as opposed to the slim, curvy and tapered design of the a51. They both have their polished frame to finish off the semi-premium look and all in all, while I've always been a fan of the unique look and finish of previous a series devices. I think this new a52 does offer a more simple, but flagship like look. Also. The new a52 is now ip67 water and dust resistant as well.

So in theory, it's a little tougher and could handle an accidental splash with the a51. There was no water resistance rating at all, and I know I tended to be maybe a little more careful with it around sinks and pools, taking a look around at everything else on the left side of the a51. That's where you'll find the sim and SD card tray on the a52 that has moved to the top of the device on the right side. Both phones have the exact same power and volume button setups down below both phones also retain the headphone jack, there's the USB c port for charging and the downward facing speaker on the a51. This is the only speaker on the device, but on the a52, this phone now offers a dual speaker setup with a secondary one in the earpiece for stereo sound and to me there is a significant difference in the out loud listening experience.

The a52 is louder crisper, and I'm a huge fan of this change. Here's a sound sample, so you can get an idea around back. Obviously these phones have very different camera setups, at least how they look. There's, definitely some things to talk about here which I'll get into in a minute, but underneath the screens, both phones also have their in-display fingerprint readers with the unlocking speeds. I was actually surprised to see that both phones sort of went back and forth on which one was quicker.

I initially thought the a52 would almost always have the advantage, but that wasn't necessarily the case. Still I've had my issues with the a51's fingerprint sensor over the last year. You guys know this. It has improved with software updates for sure, but out of the box at least the a52 does feel a little more accurate and consistent in comparison when it comes to face unlock. The difference here is a bit more noticeable 9 out of 10 times it's the a52 that will get to the home screen first, and it will also wake up to the lock screen a split second faster as well.

So there does seem to be a bit more of an improvement with this over last year. Now, one of the biggest new features on the a52 is its new 90 hertz, refresh rate display, and I think this alone is a solid reason to upgrade the a52's high refresh rate panel means this phone feels ultra responsive incredibly fast, and I do think it's noticeable over the 60 hertz panel from last year's a51. I also think that most other people would be able to tell a difference too, when they use this phone. The animations are smoother the taps and touches are more fluid and accurate. The a52 just feels like a quicker snappier, more up-to-date phone with this new high refresh rate display, and that's really great, to see.

Now, if you aren't really into this, you could just revert to 60 hertz in settings on the a52. If you wanted to whether the motion smoothing, wasn't really your thing or you wanted to save a little of battery life, whatever the case may be, but I think for most people when they pick up the new a52 they're immediately going to experience just how much better of an experience, it is, and honestly it's this sort of feature that even brings the a52 closer to a flagship, caliber smartphone, as opposed to just a budget-friendly or mid-range device. Beyond the 90hz option. I do think the display in general on the a52 is a bit better over last year as well. It's kind of tough to tell on camera, but in person to me the new a52 is a little bolder, a little more colorful and brighter as well.

The screens themselves are the same general spec super AMOLED panels, 2400 by 1080 resolution at a little more than 400 pixels per inch and the viewing experience with these large 6.5 inch displays are great, as they are in fact it's this sort of setup. That makes the series phones such a good deal on their own, but the subtle improvements overall on the a52 paired with the 90 hertz option makes this new phone an even better value than ever before, and if screen quality is important to you, or you've been introduced to a high refresh rate panel before, and you can't go back to anything else, I think it's just a no-brainer to jump up to the a52. The difference really makes it worth it inside. Both these phones, I think, offer pretty decent specs for the money, but once again the upgrade you get going with the a52, I think, is just so hard to pass up. The a51 is powered by the Enos 9611 chipsets, four six or eight gigs of ram and 64 128 or 256 gigs of internal storage.

The new a52 gets a processor, upgrade right away. It's powered by the snapdragon 720 g chipset. The base storage now starts at 128 gigs, with a 256 gig model and a similar selection of four six and eight gigs of ram. Now for this side-by-side test, you can see I actually have the four gig model of the a51 and the six gig model of the a52. So not only will you see the processor difference, but also potentially the difference in ram as well, which might be beneficial in your decision.

Making here are the geek bench scores for these devices, so you can get sort of a numeric value for comparison's sake. It's not necessarily a huge difference right off the bat, but still a difference. Nonetheless, and when we jump into some real world usage here with the side-by-side speed test, I think you can actually pick out quite easily a few instances where the a52 is going to pull ahead. I do just want to quickly mention that, while both these phones are running android 11, the a51 is still a version behind with one UI, so that might make a difference in some animation speeds and load times and other UI experiences. But besides that, I still think you're going to see a general overall speed increase with almost everything on the a52 with just launching and loading everyday apps.

The a52 feels a little faster, a little more responsive. You can shave off a fraction of a second in some instances and even a couple solid seconds and others even with the simple stuff like web browsing or YouTube videos. The a52 generally just gets things up a little quicker and, as we start to load up more and more apps you'll see that not only does the a51 get a little choppy at times, but the four gigs of ram also tends to limit it a bit with trying to keep stuff loaded up and current in the background, in fact, after just like five or six app launches, the a51 has to already reload some apps that were opened just moments ago. All in all, I think, there's really a few factors in play here. The snapdragon 720 g processor, on the a52 is definitely a better, faster, more capable and more optimized chipset, it's newer too, and all that yields better performance and potentially a better long-term investment as well.

Second, while your availability may vary based on your location, I think you'll find that six gigs of ram on the a52 now is probably going to be the default option in a lot of regions, while four gigs of ram is what we saw most often on the a51, so you're potentially getting more ram for a similar price point in comparison and on the software side of things, while the a51 will get the one UI update at some point, the a52 already has it: it's going to have another year or more of update, support versus the a51 now, and it'll probably get future updates faster anyway. Overall, I do wholeheartedly consider the a52 to be a decent, spec and performance upgrade over the last year, but at the same time, there's still some decent value in the a51. It's just a little tougher to choose now, considering how much more you can get with the new phone. Also, the new a52, with its chunkier thicker design, gets a bigger battery crammed inside as well. You now have a 4500 William capacity versus the 4 000 William battery in the a51 last year, and while the 90 hertz display does eat into that extra capacity, a bit in general, with 90 hertz on or off, I still think you're going to get better battery life on the new phone, not just because of the battery size alone, but also because of the newer, more efficient processor as well.

Furthermore, if you just want a straight comparison with 90hz disabled on the a52 and a larger capacity in general, you know you're going to get quite a bit more use and when it comes time to charge, the a52 supports the 25 watt charging standard as well. The a51 was stuck with just a 15 watt maximum, so collectively when it comes to longevity and efficiency and charging speeds. The a52 to me is just the clear winner here once again. Finally, let's talk cameras now, while the specs don't necessarily scream major upgrade, I think when you actually start shooting with the new a52 you'll, almost immediately notice some improvements, the main lens on the new a52 is technically a little better. It's now a 64 megapixel lens versus the 48 megapixel of last year.

All the rest, even though they do look kind of different appear to be the same as before. There's the 12 megapixel ultra-wide 5, megapixel macro and 5 megapixel depth sensor, all around back and seemingly the same 32 megapixels selfie lens up front inside the camera app. While we do have that new fun filters, mode, front and center for whatever reason on the a52 there's not a lot more, that's been added or changed. You get a couple: random additions to the a52 like pro video mode and AR doodle, but, generally speaking, nearly all the capabilities, settings options and shooting modes remain the same from 4k video to HDR to video stabilization. Obviously, you have the option now for a 64 megapixel shooting mode versus the 48 on the a51, but I haven't really found anything else in regard to new additions or capabilities in practice.

However, whether it be a result of some software tweaks or image processing or whatever else, I found that the results on the a52 are noticeably better. In nearly every scenario, the selfie camera tends to be sharper, more vibrant, less pale and soft. It's a solid improvement to say the least and something I definitely appreciate around back with the rear lens. It's a similar story. The pictures just offer more detail better color, it's a more pleasing.

Looking result. Now I am looking forward to doing a more in-depth camera comparison here, to really see the difference in a bunch more shooting scenarios, but in general to me just right off the bat. The a52 seems to be quite the improvement over last year. All in all, I think it's safe to say that this new a52 is absolutely a solid upgrade over the a51. You get a fresh new, modern design.

Dual speakers- a high refresh rate, screen more powerful specs, a bigger battery, better camera results, it's a new and improved phone. Basically from start to finish, and if you have last year's a51 or maybe some other a series phones, this new a52 is 100 worth getting. In fact, it's been a while, since I've outright recommended a new device over the previous generation so definitively, but this is a case where the a52 is just so much better in every possible way. With that being said, the a51 now is going to come down in price a lot. It's probably going to plummet honestly, and it's still a great phone if you want to save a ton of money, but it's just super hard to look past everything you get on the new a52 and I think, even if you have to stretch your budget a bit, this new device is just really, really worth it.

So there you go. That's everything you need to know about the new Samsung Galaxy 852 versus last year's a51. What do you guys think is the a52 worth upgrading to?
