Samsung Galaxy A20 In 2021! (Still Worth It?) (Review)

Welcome back everyone, let's go ahead and talk about none other than the Samsung Galaxy a20 and see how it holds up in 2021. Now. What I'm going to tell you is that this device is worth it in some areas, not worth it in some other areas and honestly is a seriously strange phone in terms of the price of what you're getting and what Samsung purposely kind of left out on this device to kind of water it down, and I'll be honest. You know this phone is pretty much turning two years old at this point and the Samsung Galaxy, a series is honestly one of my favorite devices. You know from Samsung's ever because this is their budget to your phones and when you have a device like an a20, you may not be getting all the crazy features of that year, but for a budget, your phone I mean it's seriously, pretty impressive. Now I'll find the cheap, sa20s and a21s or whatever their other devices, I can find I'll link them down in the description below you can get that from there and help support the channel.

At the same time now, starting off with the fronts of the a20, we do have that fairly large 6.4 inch super AMOLED display, and it's a 720p panel. So it's HD, it's not full HD or 1440p. It doesn't have a crazy. You know 120 hertz, refresh rate or fingerprint sensor in the display, but this really wasn't what Samsung was focusing on. They weren't really trying to make some type of Samsung Galaxy, s20, alternative or s10 alternative.

They were making an entry-level device with some features cut here and there, but ultimately a pretty good experience, and this was one of those devices. Honestly. This was a device that actually had some sort of cool features. I mean that 720p super AMOLED display wasn't even that bad. It had a little of bezel on the bottom and the kind of v shape you know, whatever they called it.

The infinity v display- and I think it looked pretty good at the end of the day. So the panel, I think, for the price tag really isn't even that bad. You did have a micro USB port on the bottom. You had a headphone jack. Still, which is great, but you did have expandable storage on this device as well, which is kind of funny, because we now have like the s21 that doesn't have expandable storage, but this device had that capability, which was really cool.

Now on the back, you have this kind of like plastic feeling back. It doesn't really feel bad. It actually still feels pretty good for the price tag and age that this one came out and all that stuff you have the fingerprint sensor on the back as well, and then a dual camera setup. And ultimately, what I can tell you was is that the body of this thing is more or less what I've already expected. You know it really wasn't that bad of a body I knew it wasn't going to be the greatest feeling thing, especially for the price tag that I paid for it, but there are some areas where this phone is seriously impressive.

The body is kind of one of those like average feeling things, but it's still pretty good. At the end of the day now, like I stated it had that dual camera set up on the back, it had a 13, megapixel, wide angle lens. Then a 5 megapixel ultrawide sensor. Then it also had an 8 megapixel, front-facing camera, and with that back camera, it wasn't that it was a bad quality camera again for the price tag. This is one area where Samsung really kind of cut the corner at.

You would think that, because it's a dual camera setup that it automatically makes it you know like 20 times better or whatever the case is, but that really wasn't what was happening there. You know what I mean it was pretty okay, I think for the most part, but the problem was: was that because it had, I guess, a lower megapixel ultrawide sensor count than the standard lens which I found kind of weird, but even bigger than that you could only film full HD video. Furthermore, you couldn't do any 4k videos on this thing or really any like 1080p at 60, even so this camera, even if the quality is graded on that you're already outdated, because it can only film 1080p videos, so you're just going to have to ask yourself: do you use your back camera a lot? This thing does have that wide angle and ultrawide sensor, which is great, but only 1080p, videos that is kind of a make it or break it thing for a lot of people and for me, it's also one of those things and the front.8 megapixel sensor again can only do 1080p videos, and this is one of the areas. I think it is the area where this phone kind of drops off. You know, I think, all the other areas of this phone- I can probably kind of you- know, get through and kind of maneuver through and all that stuff.

But the camera is one of those areas that I really wish Samsung kind of focused on more, but again it was a budget phone. I totally understand where they were coming from and there's really nothing we can do about it. So I'll definitely tell you to kind of sum up this camera in 2021. It's what we expected. You know it's definitely not that great, but it gets the job done for sure.

So in terms of that, that pretty much covers it up now, moving on to again the make it or break it thing, you know the software is one of those things that I'm not really a huge fan of you are on android 9. I think it got android 10, and I don't know if it's getting android 11- and this is one of those devices that you know with android, especially with Samsung they kind of with there a series. It looks like they're only doing like maybe like an extra year, software updates or something, so it's definitely not getting like every single year updates. It's definitely, you know kind of scattered out, but when you have a device like this, that I'll be honest, you know with this type of chipset and everything inside it, the software, because it just demands so many resources, you're, already kind of outdated in a way you're. In a situation where the device just really doesn't hold up extremely well- and this is another kind of make it or break it thing- I think it's probably the camera and the software.

That is just one of those things that I'm not really a huge fan of. I think, if you can kind of look over the software or if there's somehow, you can be custom ROM it or something, then I would say by all means. I think this is not that bad of a device, but when you factor in, like I stated before, all those other things about this device, you know you consider the camera and the software even for that price tag. You can pick up phones that are cheaper than this thing. Custom ROM it and like to have a way better experience.

I think of like a galaxy. S8 is one of those devices that I can think of, or maybe like in pixel one or something like that. Those are around the same prices and I think that device is probably the better one ultimately, but I think in terms of the software it's one of those areas, I'm not a huge fan of, but the battery life is a crazy good feature about this device. This thing has a 4 000 William hour battery inside it, and that is a really impressive thing, as stated before, when you have a device like this, the battery life is just crazy. You can just keep using this thing forever, and it has a lower resolution panel, even though it's a big panel, it is a lower resolution and that's a pretty big asset for it.

So I think, in terms of the battery life is probably one of the best things about this device next to the price tag. But when you factor in you know the software in the camera, it definitely gives you a much stranger experience and you kind of have to look at the whole picture to kind of look at it. You know in terms of whether it's worth it or not, so in terms of that that pretty much covers up those things now ending it off with the performance. This thing had that external 7884 chipsets inside it with three gigabytes of ram. Now what I can tell you about the performances is I'll, probably break it down into two parts, the one looking at it as an actual performance device and the other one.

Looking at logically now I'll start off with a logically one. First, you have to keep in mind that this thing is a budget phone. This thing is not supposed to. You know, replace a Galaxy S10 or a s20, or anything like that. It's supposed to be a phone that, if you know, are strict on a budget and if you don't want to spend the money for that most expensive device.

This is a decent. This is actually one of the bottom tier phones. You can pick up in terms of the series because there's like the a30, the a50 and the 70s. This is a really decent performing device for the performance. Now, with that being said, if you're doing basic tasks and those type of things, I think you're probably going to get an okay experience.

You know you're, definitely not going to get the best experience in the world, but you're going to get a phone. That's going to be able to take you from point a to point b, and it's probably not going to be the fastest thing, but as long as you're, not comparing it or as long as you're, not on a time limit where you have to get things in a certain time, and you need the most performance, then I think you're probably going to be okay for the most part. Now, looking at the other side, when you do compare this phone to something like the galaxy, s10 or s10e or s20 or s21, you're, definitely going to be saying that this device is definitely an outdated phone in terms of performance in some areas. You know if you're trying to do you know hugely intensive games like gaming like a crazy level, then you're probably going to see that your device is going to be sluggish a little. But if you don't really care about that, if you're just doing basic things, you know like texting, people, messages and Snapchat and going on Instagram and stuff, I think you're, probably going to be okay.

The ram is probably gonna, be the bigger issue with three gigs, but other than that, I would say the performance for the price tag and for what this phone was at the time. I'd probably say it gets a thumbs up for me, but if it was like a know supposed to be like that top tier model, then it's a little of a different story. So in terms of that, that pretty much covers it up now to kind of sum up this video and to answer the question: should you go and pick up a Samsung Galaxy a20 in 2021? Well, this is what I'll tell you know. There are some areas where this phone is perfect at and there are some areas where this phone just isn't really worth it. In some.

You know some areas. So, first, I think the body is actually a pro yeah. It has some outdated Io, and it does have you know like the craziest 1440p panel, or you know crazy things like that, but I think it's okay, you know for the fact that this thing was a budget to your phone. I think it's okay, you know I would expect it to not have the best or the greatest of whatever. But I'll say you know for that aspect.

It probably gets a thumbs up from me. You have that infinity v display, so the front looks pretty good. The back doesn't even look that bad. There are some areas, though, where it doesn't really, you know get a thumbs up for me. I think the camera is one of those areas that really should have gotten a little of an improvement.

I think that's one of those areas that it probably should have been a little better. Also, when you consider the fact that you know this device isn't really getting anymore. Software updates, for the most part, is another area where I'm just like wow. This thing probably isn't worth it, but I think if you need a phone to get you by for, like maybe a couple of months or a year or so then I'll say, go for it, but there's some other phones that are in this price bracket that I would probably recommend more than this, like I said before, the Google Pixel the original one, even the pixel 2, those are some really premium devices that I would probably recommend as well yeah. They may not feel or look as good as the a20 but functioning wise.

Those things are still plenty fast. You can customize those things and improve the software lifecycle and I think something like that would probably be better, but I think the 820, if you have it, it's probably a good deal still, but I would probably recommend picking up something like the original pixel or the pixel 2, if you're, okay, with custom, roaming and all that stuff, so that pretty much covers it up.
