Budget and mid-range phones are continuing to get better and while Samsung has always been in this space, it has never put much emphasis on anything other than a Galaxy S series phone or a note series phone, that's starting to change with the galaxy a series. This is the galaxy 850, which is the flagship of the lot and at $350. How does it compare to the Pixel 3a, the $400 champion? Let's find out, let's start with design, I'm partial to the Pixel 3a, because there are far fewer fingerprints and scratches on the back. That's because it's polycarbonate now the 50 is plastic, but you can see just how much it tries to mimic glass, and you can see a lot more fingerprints and scratches on it and I haven't even dropped. If I do like the rainbow and reflective colors that shine in the light, but I overall, like the pixel 3, is aesthetic more that's objective though, and you might like the 50 better I do think the galaxy a 50 is a little tougher to hold, though, because of its thin edges on the sides, and it is larger both phones. Thankfully, do have a USB port as well as a headphone jack, though the 50 is the only one of the two with a micro SD card slot.
Both do have a fingerprint sensor, but Samsung unfortunately tried to be flashy and went with the newer under glass fingerprint sensor that sits under the display it's finicky and slow to respond. The Pixel 3a is traditional, fingerprint sensor on the back is quicker to respond, and you can swipe down on it to pull down the notification shade. So from a practical and usability standpoint, the Pixel 3a wins out, but the 50 wins points for having the better screen technically they're quite similar. Both are Samsung channels, but the 50 has a six point. Four inch 23 40 by 1080 resolution versus the 5.6 inch Pixel 3a, is 20 to 80 by 1080 resolution. The 3a is slightly sharper because it has a smaller screen.
Both are OLED and are comparably bright. The colors on the 50 are a tad brighter. Where it winds is emergent. The bezels are slimmer around the screen, so content feels more immersive when you're gaming or watching movies. Now, if you hate matches the pixel, 3a is probably the phone for you if Samsung's own Enos, 9 6 10, with 4 gigs of ram inside the 50 and the Pixel 3a has the Qualcomm snapdragon 670, with 4 gigs of ram as well in our benchmark tests, the Pixel 3a eked out a win in two of the three tests: they're quite comparable, but in general I found performance to be smoother on the pics 3a.
Both phones allowed me to play pub G mobile on high settings for more than an hour without issues, except for the occasionally dropped frame, but they did get warm to the touch. Honestly performance here is more than satisfactory for both phones on the software side. Samsung uses one UI and Google uses own flavor of stock. Android I prefer using Google services and I like to look a pixel software too, but Samsung's interface is a lot more customizable. There is a lot of bloatware on the 50 though, but thankfully almost all of it is uninstalled.
Well, the bigger problem here is software. Support and Google has Samsung beat the pixel.3A will get two years of Android version updates and three years of security updates, Samsung told us. The a50 will get quarterly security updates and that there is an unscheduled plan for an OS update. That means you might get android cube, but also, maybe you might not Android q supposed to launch in August and if it doesn't get that that's pretty sad. The Pixel 3a has the better camera out.
With that question, the galaxy 850 may have the more versatile camera thanks to its 8 megapixel wide-angle lens, but in all my comparisons, all the photos I saw had better detail and more accurate colors on the pixel. The 50s camera app can sometimes be a bit sluggish but moving past that the HDR does a decent job. It does struggle with fast-moving objects, and it's in low-light where quality starts to suffer the pixel through yeas nitrite feature uses AI to improve night photos and the quality is often significantly better. There is a 5 megapixel depth camera on the 50 for live focus, shots which is what Samsung calls its portrait mode and while it does a decent job of accurately outlining a subject, images can look a little too processed. There's a twenty-five megapixel selfie camera on the 50, and it can rival the pixel 3 a's 8 megapixel selfie camera, but not in no light, and I would rather have a selfie that looks good in all conditions, rather than just have a high megapixel count.
The 50 lasted almost 11 hours in our battery test. That's playing a 1080p YouTube video over Wi-Fi with max brightness. The pixel 3, on the other hand, only lasted a little over nine hours. The difference isn't too great and that similar in real-world usage, the 50 did last a little longer. But both these phones can get you through a full day of use.
The galaxy a 50 cost $$35050 less than the Google Pixel 3 a and the reasons to go for it or if you want a micros card slot, a more immersive screen, a slightly better battery life or that versatility of the wide-angle camera. It's only available at Verizon and Sprint at the moment, and it's a strong phone, especially if you can find it at a discount I'd, still recommend the Pixel 3a over it, though the better user experience, the better camera and the fact that you get fast Android updates, give it the win in my book.
