Hi and welcome to Asian Photography's YouTube channel. My name is Bhavya Desai and today, is all about the OnePlus 9 Pro. The OnePlus 9 Series was launched recently and we've both, the OnePlus 9 Pro and the OnePlus 9 which we've been testing for quite sometime now. But the reason why we haven't featured the review yet is because we wanted to test the cameras out completely, in totality. Because now both the camera's of the phone have a Hasselblad branding and that tie-up is very significant. So in this video, we are going to focus only on the OnePlus 9 Pro cameras and we will be comparing it with the iPhone 12.
so now the reason why we are comparing it with the iPhone 12 is because a lot of times I feel consumers pick up a camera or a phone considering a specific price-point. So we thought a lot that we should compare the OnePlus 9 Pro with the iPhone 12 Pro but that just didn't make sense. So hence, we decided that this is the best choice. In this video, we will be comparing the OnePlus 9 Pro cameras with the iPhone 12 cameras, and see, how they do. So the OnePlus 9 Pro is available in two variants that is the 8GB RAM with 128 GB capacity and 12GB RAM with 256 GB capacity.
Its price is INR 65,000 and 70,000 respectively. And in comparison, the iPhone 12 starts off in the online pricing at around INR 74,000 and it will max out at INR 95,000. Now the OnePlus 9 Pro that we have is the 12 GB RAM 256 GB capacity and the iPhone is basically 128 GB capacity So before we get into comparing the cameras, let's just talk about Hasselblad first. Since OnePlus started teasing the moon image, a lot of people in our industry already knew that the tie-up for 9 series, OnePlus will do it with Hasselblad. And over the next three years as per their statement, Both will be investing close to 150 million dollars into this partnership.
But in this year's OnePlus 9 series, Hasselblad has helped with the colour toning And honestly, this is a very critical moment also for OnePlus, the reason is because many competing brands have already tied up with good camera and lens manufacturers and that, sometimes, can play an important role in the minds of the consumer. So this tie-up is quite important for OnePlus and also if you choose a lot of OnePlus phones like me over the years, then you will know that somewhere, somehow OnePlus cameras and the performance will always let the phone down as compared to the overall performance. Because its specs are always great the phone also is very fast, it performs extremely well. But somehow, the performance of the cameras will always let you down. So this is a very critical moment when it came to the 9 series and this tie-up.
So let's take a look at the images side by side and the comparisons we have given. So let's take a look at the daylight images first. In terms of the daylight images shot from the main camera, both the cameras now deliver quite good, sharp and crisp images. They both really shine here. And as you can see in the images we have shot, there's good detailing, the images have been captured well, saturation and sharpness are quite good too.
However, the colour accuracy of OnePlus is slightly off as compared to the iPhone here. You can see that the OnePlus adds a bluish tinge to the pants and even the T-shirt looks a bit lighter than what is in the actual image. Looking at the images in the daylight with the ultra wide lens again the images are very sharp, they are pretty crisp. But again the OnePlus Pro sharpens the image quite a lot post-clicking, which makes it look underexposed. As you can see from the images, the iPhone 12 is better exposed and the images from the 9 Pro are slightly under.
Now I think that is something that can easily be fixed with a software update but the new ultra wide lens is pretty good as you will see in the video ahead. In the daylight portrait mode, both the images have come out quite sharp and good. But the 9 Pro benefits from the additional megapixels and when you zoom in you can see it's quite sharp in comparison with the iPhone 12. Although the image is still under exposed and over sharpened which doesn't make the picture look natural. But the iPhone does master the edge detection which is quite good and smooth in comparison with the 9 Pro.
And if we talk about the front facing camera, then it's sharp too and infact the 9 Pro adds a cooler tone. The images are over sharpened and look more natural in the portrait mode but seems much better on the iPhone 12 as compared to the 9 Pro with the background blurring slightly more and also better edge detection. When it comes to shooting landscapes in daylight, the images are good, but again seem more natural in the iPhone 12 and properly exposed. And here you can see that the 9 Pro's oversharpening hurts it a bit because on zooming in the quality drops as you can see from the zoomed in image here. While using the wide angle lens, the 9 Pro can not only fit more in the frame but also the image is slightly better in performance than the iPhone 12.
As the light drops in the evening, its slight sharpening makes the image look better to the naked eye as compared to what you see in the iPhone 12. Even while zooming in, you'll see that its pixelation is less in comparison with the iPhone 12. Now we just didn't take a lot of outdoor daylight images but we also tested the phones in the indoor environment. So let's first see the images which we have shot with the main camera. The images we have shot with the main camera have come out quite sharp and well saturated.
And the iPhone once again seems more natural in comparison with the 9 Pro. But due to the compensation of the 9 Pro, the images look better and more pleasing to the eye. Although it did takes as a few tries to get the images and the colours also right. But on zooming in, you'll see the images of the 9 pro look sharper but they also look slightly grainy because of the oversharpness. Whereas iPhone 12 has lost quite a lot of image sharpness in this department.
In terms of the Indoor Portrait Mode the images from the iPhone 12 seemed slightly more saturated than the OnePlus 9 Pro. This means that, once again, the 9 Pro made the images look more pleasing to the eye. However, the iPhone 12 continued to trump edge detection even in indoor conditions and also its blur effect was quite natural and seamless. To check distortion, we shot many images with these cameras, because many of you always tend to ask us in the comments that why is the phone making me look thinner or fatter. And honestly, I was shocked with the level of distortion that the wide and telephoto shots that both the phones displayed.
The images that we have clicked with the main cameras, that seemed fine. But the moment we went wide, both the cameras made me look much thinner and somewhat malnourished. And we used these in zooming in, in the 3x zoom pictures, that literally showed two of me in the frame. So in this department, the performance of both the cameras was quite shocking honestly and I was very disappointed. Now usually when you use the phone cameras, then lowlight images are not always that great.
And in this case, the results we have got are quite mixed. When you see the image that I shot of my room from the main camera of both the phones, then you can see there is a light purple tinge in the pic of the OnePlus 9 Pro whereas the iPhone 12 seems to have captured the image as is. But when you zoom in, then you'll see the sharpness of the OnePlus Pro is much better in comparison with the iPhone 12. And this same thing will be seen when you shoot using the wide-angle lens, the purple tinge has reduced slightly in the 9 Pro although it's better than what it used to be earlier. But the 12 Pro still gives a much better natural look.
If we talk about the Lowlight Portrait, both the phones showcase good clarity, saturation and depth. In the images we have shot, the image quality of the iPhone 12 is slightly better than the 9 Pro. The iPhone 12 has correctly saturated the image capturing the true scene as compared to the 9 Pro, which makes the image slightly lighter in the Portrait Mode. Now when it comes to capturing nightscape images, both the cameras have a completely different method to capture images in the Night Mode using AI. The 9 Pro will ask you to hold the phone steady while taking the pictures and in comparison, the iPhone 12 will map the number of seconds you want to shoot using the aperture before it captures the picture.
The images in both cases are at best okay. Not great since these sensors are not really built to give you great output in nightscapes. But the 9 Pro once again maintains better sharpness when you zoom in in comparison with the iPhone 12. So in this department, I'd say easily the 9 Pro is a much better player than the iPhone 12. Now there are some new things when it comes to the OnePlus 9 Pro in the camera department.
And the first of which is the Super Macro Mode. The iPhone 12 now that misses out in the Super Macro Mode, and honestly that's something which I really would have liked to see because the Macro Mode of OnePlus 9 is just phenomenal. I really enjoyed getting up close and personal with a lot of the subjects that I shot and the images are superb. They're just brilliant, crisp, sharp and something that I would like to see in a lot more other phones as well. Now next thing is also Tilt Shift Mode.
So in the Tilt Shift mode you can miniaturize anything when you takes its picture. Like in the sample shots I have taken. This is also a fun mode which you can actually use to capture some unique images. It's not that you'll use it in many images; there's a possibility you might forget about it unless somebody reminds you of it or you see a picture somewhere. But it's a good bonus mode to have if you want to shoot something different.
So now in the Pro Mode, the famous Hasselblad logo appears when you pull it up along with the orange button, which is featured in many cameras. But the OnePlus 9 Pro is the first phone to offer 12-bit RAW in comparison with 10-bit RAW you'll get in most phones. You also have the dual native ISO as well which has been launched for the first time in phones. Now this ideally should be able to give you much better pulling and post-processing options when you edit the images in post-processing. But as far as I have used the Pro Mode, I don't think it's anything out of the usual.
It really lacks that extra juice and honestly in the OnePlus phones I have used earlier, and the normal Android phones you'll use, that's pretty much like a hit and miss. But you do have to admit that the raw images that are coming out of this phone are more natural and if you are really interested then in post processing you can do a lot of tuning & toning using this. So another new thing I liked very much about this camera is that it corrects perspective distortion a lot. Now perspective distortion is basically whenever you shoot an image, where there are buildings and other straight lines, they appear slightly crooked. The OnePlus 9 Pro camera has really worked to tuck that out.
And this performs very well too. Because a lot of times when you're pointing it at a subject and you see buildings or you see lines, it will correct it. And an orange light will blink which will show its correcting that distortion. Which I thought was very good because it really makes a world of a difference in the images. Because the images that you shoot normally of buildings or of subjects that contain lines, and if it comes out crooked, it just throws off the image a little bit.
And that, is a good addition to have. Now when it comes to video capability, both these phones that can shoot 4K up to 60 frames per second. But the OnePlus 9 Pro can shoot 8K as well up to 30 frames per second. But that is only limited to 5 minutes. now when it comes to Full HD as well both of them again can shoot upto 60 fps and they can shoot slow motion at 120 and 240 fps.
But again, the OnePlus 9 Pro can shoot upto 480 fps but its resolution will drop to 720p. Now in this case as well, both of them actually they have image stabilization as well optical image stabilization all the way up to 4K. But one of the things that I really found funny is that whenever I used the OnePlus 9 Pro in the super stable mode, the flash would not work which to me was like quite funny because if you really want to shoot something in super stable mode especially in low light or at night, then you'll definitely need flash for it. In terms of video performance, both the cameras video performance is quite good. But iPhone's video performance is much better and honestly it's very difficult to compete with.
So that was the comparison test between the OnePlus 9 Pro and iPhone 12. We'' leave it upto you to decide which camera among these you like better, because this involves a lot of personal preference. But in general, I definitely feel the OnePlus Pro's cameras this is the best camera that they've put in any of their phones yet. But does it really live up to the Hasselblad billing? I really don't think so. The reason is because, Hasseblad this time has helped the OnePlus 9 Series with color toning and color mapping.
But as far as I have used the phone, I don't think there's quite of lot of difference in colour mapping and toning as compared to the previous OnePlus phones. Ofcourse, the new Pro mode in this offers new additional features. For example, you have the 12-bit RAW as compared to the 10-bit RAW you find in other phones. You also have the Dual ISO Native, which will help you quite a lot in post-processing. But there's not enough, and it's a slight hit-and-miss.
It doesn't have anything in the Pro mode after seeing which you will be like in absolute awe of it or you will feel there is something exceptional. But generally standalone as cameras, this phone definitely has very good cameras. And overall, I felt the 9 Plus Pro is a very good package. The reason is because now it also has a flatter design because the curve edges have been slightly reduced thus the experience has become flatter and taller. If we look at it's specs, the Oxygen 11 with Snapdragon 888 chipset is quite fast.
It's display is LTP Display, 120 Hertz that's buttery smooth. And in whatever you make it do, it'll readily basically lag behind in whatever you expect it to do Of course it's not perfect there are still few things which can't possibly be improved. But look, there are no phone which is perfect out there. So if you like this video, then please make sure that you like, share and subscribe to our channel.
