This is the OnePlus 8t, 5g and notice, there's no pro on the name. It's actually not intended to replace the OnePlus 8 pro and oddly, it's not even meant to replace the OnePlus 8. It's a very interesting middle child that stands in between and blends some of the things that we liked from the pro and that we wished we had on the eight. But the problem is when the strategy changes. This is not like the more affordable OnePlus 7t that disrupted the fall of 2019. Actually, it's the complete opposite being more expensive and actually dated in certain ways.
I know this is not what you were expecting to hear from an OnePlus device, but here's the thing. Neither was I'm Rivera with pocket now and let's dive into our full review, sponsored by private internet access, stick around to learn how you can get complete digital privacy and convenience for just three dollars a month. The tea in the fall has always stood for a more updated flagship than what we got in the spring. Usually we get the latest plus processor from Qualcomm and some improvements here and there and last year it even got less expensive, so the plus and the flat display made the 7t one of my favorite OnePlus devices. The problem with the OnePlus 8t is that it's more expensive than even the galaxy s20 Fe and the pixel 5, and even the iPhone 12 mini that just got announced.
So this means this phone should be better than all of them right. Well, there is a lot to like about the hardware like in the case of the 8 and the 8 pro OnePlus refined their design and weight distribution in such a way that this is probably one of my favorite phones to hold and use in the hand the gloss and matte finish of this aquamarine green is good at handling fingerprints and the design now evolves to a corner. Camera design with a minimal hump favorites like the three-way mute slider, are still here and seriously. My favorite change is the flat display we have at the front, I'm actually going to believe all the ratings and awards that OnePlus got for this display because, to be honest, it screams it's perfect at 6.55, inches, diagonal and 1080p plus resolution and 20 by 9 aspect ratio. This panel is stunning colors pop.
The contrast ratio is insane, it supports RGB and the p3 color gamut and best of all, it's 120 hertz refresh rate, it's crazy, smooth and reacts to everything instantly thanks to 240hz, touch sampling and then seriously another one of my favorite things about this phone is once you match up with these dual firing speakers, because they're loud targeting a younger audience, there are a crazy six color. The controversy begins in that expectation of never settle of always taking step forwards. Of this always having the latest and greatest chip, and by contrast, it actually doesn't have the Qualcomm snapdragon, 865, plus ram and storage, depends on your region, we're actually testing the 12 256 gigabyte variant, and it's not the fastest ram, though the storage is up there. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are all new. The battery is fairly large, but nope no wireless charging and then the IP rating is also a thing for only us carriers and really the only thing new is warp charge 65.
It actually won't just charge this phone in 15 minutes to 58, but it now finally supports power delivery for any other charger, or you can use this charger on any other device, though the speed won't be the same. Now, in all fairness, will you notice that this phone doesn't have an overclocked version of the 865? No, the experience in day to day is fast and fluid. The user interface is, in my opinion, fantastic, and you have to keep in mind. This is only the second company to launch a phone out of the box with android 11 pretty much after google. The thing is: if oxygen OS was all about being more stock than stock.
Well version 11 is not like the pixel launcher. It brings its own new design language, but like Samsung, it's redesigned in a mesh of new aesthetics in the logical push for one-handed usability. As a result, all the company's UI elements are at the bottom, and then it's also got this bolder design approach that doesn't remind me of android nor even iOS, I'd even say, Windows phone. If you notice how text is arranged and used and definitely try those new always on display options, they're really useful regardless? What matters to you is that this phone performs well every single time, and it does scroll through menus, and it's fast launch your applications, and it's fast and all the other features that I've praised from OnePlus in the past are also here, like reading mode gaming mode and update to zen mode sure it's no longer bare-bones stock. But, honestly I don't care.
I actually feel that it improves over that experience. Basic elements that pixels are now ignoring like not showing notifications in the lock screen unless my face is detected, are essentially privacy elements. I look for on any phone, and the at is one of the few left to do this once you match the fluidity of the user experience with the security and convenience of private internet access and the experience becomes full peace of mind. A VPN is a very practical way to encrypt your connection, keep you safe from spammers and hackers and has the cool convenience of letting you access content from Netflix, Amazon, prime or Hulu. That's blocked in your region, with over 30 million downloads around the world.
Private internet access is one of the most trusted VPNs for a reason. First, it works on all platforms, windows, mac, OS, iOS, android and even further there's a strict, no logs' policy in place. Your subscription works on up to 10 devices. At the same time, it blocks ads, trackers and malware, and best of all you get a 30 day. One of the reasons I have a lot of respect for OnePlus is for how the company has control over its software, which, as a result, is reflected in its endurance lecture. It lacks wireless charging, though warp charge.65 is crazy good, but the most interesting part is that you actually won't be really needing much of it. This phone barely sips on power up to the point where it has sometimes become a two-day phone in my usage phone calls are loud, probably some of the loudest I've tried and testing it on Google phi's recent update to 5g has proven to provide some perfect speeds, even if it's still relatively new, what's left to discuss is the camera, and this is one of those departments where I seriously wonder if the company gets tired of hearing the same feedback where it's a great phone, and it's got fantastic software, but the camera seriously. For this price, you can't just be providing okay results like notice specifications, no one is doing assistive lenses anymore and there's a monochrome here for highlights and shadows which every other company stopped using like three years ago and let's be real, no one is going to use the low resolution macro. I mean why not improve on the three basic cameras that we had on the 7t and just call it a day.
Anyways, like with any phone photos during the day are good. Good light obviously makes a difference, and you obviously have the advantage of having three focal lengths to choose from my biggest problem is that the results from those other two focal lengths are not really great. The primary does a pretty good job most of the time, but if you're trying to capture any close-up, you'll see the camera, tell you it focused, then it didn't, and then obviously, since we have the same sensors from the past, don't expect better results in low light. Software does try hard to avoid the grain as much as it can, but it's definitely not what this phone is good. At probably one thing where I do see improvements is in selfies, where I finally notice far more detail now than the fuzzy results we had before and that even applies to selfie portraits.
That being said, when we jump into video, I start scratching my head again: we've got warping meager dynamic range, though you can finally switch to all three focal lengths in 4k. What I don't understand is why we still have 1080p video from the selfie camera at a time when even the OnePlus word can do 4k, why not the more expensive 8t it makes no common sense. To conclude, what can I say, there is a lot to like about the OnePlus 8t, its design elements, the display most of the spec sheet and oxygen OS 11 are all very good reasons to make anyone want to use this phone. My problem is trying to understand who this phone is, for. I can't say that it's for OnePlus fans, because the best bang for the buck, mentality and reputation is not here.
I can't say it's for those who want an OnePlus flagship, because that's what the OnePlus 8 pro is for. Furthermore, I can't say it's for anyone wanting to never settle, because a lot of the camera features are dated which pretty much every phone at this price gets right or has wireless charging or has an IP rating I'd even say there are subtle ways in which even less expensive phones from OnePlus are doing a better job. Furthermore, I honestly think that, at a time when the OnePlus 8 pro is already being discounted and the OnePlus 8 brings most of what this phone can do for less money, I think you'll be better served by either of those phones in a vacuum. The OnePlus 8t is a perfect device, but its biggest problem is that it's not alone, it's not difficult to recommend this as a phone, but it's really hard to do so for its price.
