OnePlus 8 vs OnePlus 8 Pro camera comparison (with GCam samples)

Yeah this comparison could look a little odd because of course the oneplus 8 pro has a better primary camera sensor. so it should perform better. and in fact it does in many if not all the cases. but there are many people like me who love their money and would like to know how much more you get for the more money you put on a phone. and if that's not true you wouldn't have been looking for a video like this. hey everyone mukul here.

so both the phones have a primary camera and ultra wide camera and a selfie camera in the front the difference is that oneplus 8 has a macro camera and the oneplus 8 pro has a color filter camera and a telephoto camera which can also work as a macro camera. the rest of the specs and video capabilities are similar on both the phones. i tested the phones both in ample and not so ample lighting conditions and tested the night especially with the gcam mod too. so let's see how they perform. well in daytime shots you would see that the overall picture of the 8 pro is brighter on the shadow areas and also because of the superior lens the details are better too.

the picture of 8 is also more saturated. these ultra-wide shots look absolutely the same from far which if we zoom in would show that the eight pros picture has more details. of course as the eight pros ultra-wide is the eight's primary sensor. the 2X and 3X shots are a tad brighter on 8 but they show more details on the 8 pro the dynamic range on this shot was handled quite well from both the phones with as usual the 8 pro having way more crisp details on it as it also loves those crispy spicy lays like most of us these ultra-wide shots look gorgeous on both but with totally different color science. guess the two team of scientists here really don't like each other.

the 2x and 3x zoom shots again showed superior details on the 8 pro. but both of these shots would be ok for your instagram celebrity account. the macro on the 8 is meh but even though when the 8 pro captured this shot at higher pixels it wasn't much impressive too. it just looks like as if you fiddled with the primary mode and took this picture this human subject who is still learning the art of posing looks equally good on both but as we zoom in way sharper on the 8 pro but that sharpness seemed a little fake to me. the portrait on the 8 was actually better and wider than the 8 pro.

the edge detection is meh on both of them. how many years has it been since companies are trying to figure this out and then the slap terms like artificial intelligence etc written with every new launch. i think we should first get our human intelligence improved before we talk about artificial intelligence and world domination by it the macro shot was brighter and better on the 8 pro such a waste of space that lens is on the 8. and as i was being a little artistic here both the shots came equally good but there is again no comparison between the zoom details from both the cameras the imx 689 on the 8 pro is definitely superior and flagship grade sensor. in videos the dynamic range of both the phones behave the same but the 8 pro was able to capture more details on the video.

i could also notice the 8's video jitter just a little when i moved the phone quickly which was quite minimal on the 8 pro. but these videos are nowhere near the samsungs or the iphones. and maybe next time they will be who knows. on both the phones you could change modes to ultrawide and zoom in obviously. in these samples you can see when i shift the focus to the skies above how that dome looks way darker on the 8 as compared to the 8 pro.

on ultra quite strangely the 8 had a brighter video. and this is how the video quality is from the front camera from both the phones at 4k 30fps. on phone screens i see oneplus 8 pro do better but they have the same sensor the same processor so i don't know how will this look on the computer screen the hdri performance is kind of same on both the both of them because i can't see the anything on the sky on both the cameras. these slo-mo videos look the same with the same amount of noise and details on both of them. so the following shots were taken in extreme dim lighting conditions.

not many would be clicking a lot of pictures in such scenarios but it was a good test nonetheless and if it wouldn't have been then i wouldn't have taken these pictures all right let's have a look at these two different shots a and b, a and b. you might think the b pictures are from night mode and a is from the standard mode but no it's actually the opposite. this is the night mode and this is the standard mode. the picture of the standard mode look way better than the night mode especially handheld they even retained more details. the standard mode actually bumps up the iso to 10000 and sometimes even 16000 but for a quick click especially in night i would prefer the standard mode.

and the same case here repeats this was the night mode and then these shots without the night mode. but then because it was pretty dark the gcam generally has this epic night mode on it. so i tried these shots again the shots came out definitely way more brighter than the previous shots but they were extremely hazy as these were handheld shots. well don't worry as i took one more shot in extreme dim conditions on a tripod so wait for it. this shot was again on normal mode and the 8 had quite visible noise the normal mode pictures are generally taken at a way higher isos.

but the 8 pro shot is looking good but the night mode shots in this case were generally cleaner and this g-cam shot was again quite hazy and i don't like them a bit to be honest these ultra wide shots from the stock camera night mode were way brighter on the 8 pro. but when i took these on the ultra wide with the night mode on the g cam the 8 shot came out to be much cleaner which was a surprise. and a pleasant surprise. the zoom in shots were also cleaner on the 8 in this case again a surprise. i took multiple shots from the 8 pro but this is the best i could get these standard shots from the rear lens were way cleaner on the 8 pro but the portrait was brighter on the 8 shot.

these selfie shots more or less were the same on both the standard and portrait modes but these g cam selfies with the night mode captured way more light obviously. but too many bumpy details on my face as expected which won't be liked by any of the humans i know so far. and yes okay now these first shots were from the stock camera app on a tripod. this was actually the night mode and once i shifted to the normal mode the 8's picture in particular captured more details and light. so the night mode is so broken on these oneplus phones.

i hope they fix it in the future but once when i shifted to the g cam night mode just take a look at how brilliant the 8 pro's picture is. i mean it's not an award-winning picture or anything but as this was a pitch dark scene man was this impressive or what. the videos in the night look generally decent on both of them. and if you want you can also check my dedicated oneplus 8 camera review video and other comparison to in the description below. the ultrawide gets a little darker but overall good videos get captured by both the phones.

well these video samples were both taken from the g cam and for some reason not from the stock camera app so yeah come and get me if you can for that mistake. bwahahaha but yeah there is a peculiar behavior of the 8 camera to maintain highlights more and in this process it crushes the shadows, and hence the 8 pros video is brighter overall this is how the video quality is from the front camera at full hd yep it's quite humid so now i see the screen on oneplus 8, the camera is looking to to have captured more light on it. i'll reconfirm this when i see this on the desktop. but yeah overall this is how the video would look like from both the phones so there you go a thorough comparison of both the phones and if everyone was as good as coding camera apps like how google is then so many phones would have had brilliant cameras processing on them in low lit scenarios. but unfortunately that's not the case i would buy the 8 pro for cameras if i can stretch my budget and pay 10 or 12 000 rupees more or 200 us dollars more but i would have to keep my fingers crossed that i don't get a unit with any display issues on it.

as you as most of you may know by now but if i'm not a pixel peeper i would be happy with the oneplus 8 performance too i mean with a simple gcam installation the phone supersedes my expectations hope oneplus fixes their night mode on the stock camera app too. so this should be clear by now. you get what you pay for so i got the eight as i paid for the eight. and as i didn't pay for the eight pro i didn't get the eight pro. and it would have been awesome if i had received eight pro instead of eight when i paid for the eight.

what. do hit a like and sub with the bell if this video helped you in any way stay safe humans. MuBout out. ah a perfect thumb to the lens shot.
