New Features of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus

As expected, earlier today Apple unveiled the new iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. Everything seems in line with rumors. We already know it’s water resistant, has stereo speakers, and has a brand new camera. The next-gen models meet the IP67 protection standard, which is good enough to briefly drop it in a pool (or, more likely, a toilet) but not good enough to shower with regularly. The body is quite similar to the iPhone 6s. There’s a shiny black also a matte black model, along with your standard gold, rose gold and silver options.

The Home Button will now rely on Apple’s haptic engine, just like new Mac trackpads. It won’t actually click, but it’ll feel like it. The new iPhones will have optical image stabilization, allowing for up to 3x longer exposure. The iPhone 7 camera has a six-element, 1.8 aperture lens, a 12 megapixel sensor that is 60 percent faster, with a quad-LED flash allowing 50 percent light output. Plus, the iPhone 7 will have a 7-megapixel front camera, up from a 5-megapixel camera on the iPhone 6s.

Enter the iPhone 7 Plus, which comes with two 12-megapixel cameras on the back. The dual-lens setup allows for both wide angle and telephoto. Users can simply tap on the screen of the camera app to zoom 2x, automatically focusing on the region that was tapped. Beyond 2x zoom, you head back into the realm of optical zoom. All in all, the iPhone 7 Plus will go all the way to 10x zoom.

Now let’s talk battery. The iPhone 7 battery won’t be significantly bigger, but the phone will consume significantly less battery. You should get at least two extra hours of battery life for an average day for the iPhone 7 compared to the iPhone 6s. Apple’s A10 Fusion chip optimizes power consumption It’s 40 percent faster than last year’s A9, and twice as fast as the A8. The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus will be available to pre-order on September 9 and will ship a week later on September 16.

The cheapest version of the iPhone 7 now comes with 32GB of storage rather than the traditional 16GB. The base model will cost $649. There will be a 128GB model as well as a 256GB. The base model iPhone 7 Plus will cost a bit more and start at $769.
