Welcome back to the channel in today's video I'd like to talk about why it's more complicated than ever to choose between the 11 and 12-inch iPad Pro. Usually this would be an easy decision, buy the iPad Pro 12.9 inch in space, gray with 512 gigabytes of storage, but now that the iPad Pro comes with the m1 chip, there's a lot more to consider. So let me explain, but first don't forget to like this video subscribe and comment hashtag. I tablet to enter the iPad Mini giveaway. So when it comes to technology, I'm a bit of a maximalist. I always get the pro version of anything from apple before apple moved the iPad Pro to the m1 chip.
The 12.9 inch model would be the obvious choice if you were looking to replace your laptop and go iPad only before the m1, even the most pro iPad Pro with the most powerful a14 chip was still just an iPad and before the m1 chip it didn't really matter what iPad you chose, because every iPad was basically equally capable. iPads are great tablets, but they are not always great for pro workflows involving pro apps. This year could be different this year, for the first time, Apple made an iPad which I can finally call a real pro iPad, and it all comes down to the hardware. The iPad Pro finally has a desktop class chip inside which means that more desktop class apps and changes could be coming to iPadOS soon. The m1 also enables apple to move macOS to the iPad.
Theoretically, although I don't really think this is going to happen, I made a video about why macOS is not coming to the iPad Pro so check my channel for that one, but just because macOS is not coming to the iPad Pro. That doesn't mean that Mac apps are not coming to the iPad Pro. This means that the choice between laptop and iPad has become a lot harder this year. So it's decision time, do you go for the 11 or the 12.9-inch iPad Pro and how much storage do you need? Let's start with the easiest choices? Color it's hard for me to tell you what color to choose. I always choose space gray and I kind of wish that apple would introduce a third color for the iPad in the same way that they introduce a third color every year with the iPhone, but unfortunately that's not on the cards yet connectivity.
I love my LTE iPad Pro and would really like to get a 5g version, as this is apple's only m1 mac with cellular connectivity with my LTE iPad Pro. Furthermore, I never really always needed on connectivity to justify the extra cost and with pandemic making it harder to travel. It's also much harder for me to enjoy this extra feature. So perhaps my mind will change, and I will get a 5g iPad in the future, but at the moment I probably won't be getting a 5g storage. I always recommend the 512 gigabyte model.
To me this is the sweet spot, as you can easily fill up, 256 gigabytes with footage and photos this year, you may want to spring for more storage for two reasons: one your iPad Pro may become your only device very soon. If you decide to go iPad only so, if you're not buying the new iMac or a new MacBook, you can probably afford to spend more money on your iPad and two. The 128 256 and 512 gigabyte models only come with eight gigabytes of ram. The one terabyte and two terabyte models come with 16 gigs of ram. If you're planning on doing a lot of video editing and photography and use power, hungry apps you'll definitely enjoy the additional ram so best you get.
The higher storage models now comes the tricky part which screen size. Do you choose? I think this year the 11 is probably the best deal in tech. The m1 chip also allows apple to include a thunderbolt port. This is a meaningful upgrade, as now you'll be able to use more powerful accessories with your iPad Pro now you can use apple 6k Pro Display XDR with an iPad Pro, which is basically using your iPad Pro as a laptop. This upgrade is absolutely bonkers.
The 2020 iPad pros can't even drive a 5k display. This is why I think this year, it's time to choose the 11 inch. Now that thunderbolt is on board, I suspect apple is preparing to add full external, monitor, support to iPad Pro or at least the m1 iPad pros. At the moment, the iPad can only mirror to external displays. There is no way to extend your workspace, like you can on macOS, if apple adds full external, monitor support at WWDC this year.
The 11-inch iPad Pro is a no-brainer. The 11h is the perfect size. It's small enough to go anywhere and big enough to work as a standalone device. Combine portability, full external, monitor, support and great accessories like the magic keyboard, and you have the world's most versatile m1 powered portable workstation. Imagine having an external monitor at home and one at the office and only carrying one device.
Your 11-inch iPad Pro between the two places. It's the dream setup then there's also the benefit of the lower price. The one terabyte 11 inch model is only 1 399 pounds compared to 1000 pounds for the 12.9 inch and don't forget the one. Terabyte model comes with 16 gigabytes of ram, which means you'll have a pretty future-proof device. The two terabyte 11-inch iPad Pro is only 100 pounds more than the one terabyte 12.9-inch iPad Pro, but there are also some minor downsides to the setup. The 11-inch screen is not as nice as the 12.9 inch on the m1 iPad Pro, but who really cares about this? It's prob, it's probably not a big deal. iPad pros, have incredible displays, and I'm sure the 11 inch will look equally good.
Also bear in mind that the 11-inch battery is a slightly smaller, and you may not notice this, but the 11-inch screen is slightly narrower than the 12 meaning you see a little less information using it in landscape mode. Another potential downside, if you have large hands, is that the 11-inch magic keyboard may feel a little more cramped. But if you're planning on using the iPad Pro as a portable workstation, you can always use a Bluetooth, keyboard and mouse and don't forget the usefulness of the m1 chip inside the iPad. Pro hinges on how advanced apple decides to make iPadOS 15. Apple likes to take their time with the iPad, and just because we got the m1 chip this year.
That's by no means a guarantee that apple will be doing much with that processing power. If you don't believe me, just look at the iPad over the years as much as I am excited about iPad or s15, I'm also very much prepared for apple to let us down yet again, but until we know I think the 11 inch is one of the best iPad pros in years. It has all the benefits of a desktop class workstation in a super light package at a reasonable price for the most storage and ram. What do you think which size are you buying?
