M1 iPad Pro (2021) - DONT BUY into the M1 HYPE

Okay, let's clarify a few things, because I know one of my more popular videos. If you consider that popular is me kind of not roasting the new iPad Pro but bringing a different perspective right, because here's the thing is the fact that it's okay- let's be honest, it's really a rebranded. You remember apples do like a 12x a13 xa14x. This really is an like eighth. What is it 14 now? Third, I can't keep up whatever is the latest iPhone? I think it's 14. , it's really an a14x, but they're branding m1, because obviously that makes sense right, they're a company.

They want what one sounds more insane, a m1 in the iPad. We just got that from a mac, and it was insane or an a14x right. So I understand that marketing aspect of it, and it really is impressive right and I, the problem that I see is that people can't kind of- and I'm not saying you if you're watching, but some comments, it seems like they're intentionally misrepresenting what I'm saying what I was getting at in that video was hey. Listen new hardware is always exciting right. The mini LED display it's probably fantastic, it's probably the best in the industry, potentially um, it has 5g.

Now that's awesome. Good design, speaker like it's gonna, be killer hardware and I don't think anyone expected anything different. So for me, I wanted to maybe bring a different perspective and say: hey, listen. This is all great, but let's really take a look at the software, because if you have an iPad Pro from 2018 2020, whatever like iPadOS, still has a long way to go, and I was poking fun at you know. We hear this: it's a laptop replacement, it's a computer replacement this and that- and I understand that for you and there's a lot of edge cases where people use procreate knife 37 layers, I started my YouTube channel on iPad Pro.

I get that, but I'm trying to bring the average consumer- and I know that is played out ad nauseam right. Every person on tech YouTube feels like says the average consumer, but then the entire message or review or commentary is solely based upon an enthusiast's point of view, and so that's why I wanted to make sure that that's what I was referring to because again people a lot of the comments that are kind of negative are like well. I do this with my iPad, so I need it, and I'm like yeah, that's great, and I even said like go get it. I got people asking, should I get the 2020 or 2021. Furthermore, I'm like unless you have this is the ultimate test? In my opinion, you, let me know if I'm wrong, if you're running into a performance, you're limited right, you're, there's an app, and you're like man.

This thing is like it's slow or, if I add this many layers, or I'm adding this or that I notice the performance drops, then yes, it makes sense like you're that person that this makes sense for, but I would argue- and I think I'm right in this- I would argue that is like a small percentage of iPad Pro users, and so this gets into the whole pro moniker, which is effectively just we're going to make you charge more. It's nicer, they should just say the ipad nicer and the in the AirPods nicer, because that's really what they're saying, but I guess that doesn't make sense, because it sounds cheesy, and I know what you're saying it is pro I'm like yeah but like AirPods. Is it no other headphone says it's pro, because it's noise cancellation, I'm like apple, just magically snap their finger and make people think it's a professional thing to do anyway. Ran aside, I know it seems, like I'm growing apple, I'm just poking fun at some things, but really in all in all seriousness. When it comes to the iPad, I think we should have a similar passion for the software right, and I don't mean you know like the pencil.

Well, I kind of do right because there are some things. I think they need to address with the pencil that I've gone over kind of a lot versus the tab, s7 or really any s pen device. But for me, I'm like we got to push this further right. If you're going to say this is a laptop replacement and the problem is, you have to remove yourself and I am you're saying: okay, apple's marketing, I'm not making this up, and it's not YouTubers making it up apple positions this on their website, the future of computing, the next computer. I mean you've seen that kind of lame ad.

What's a computer, so they're pushing this as a replacement right, people seem to forget when I say that I'm not saying it's not a great supplement. I've had comments like I use mine with my iMac, and it's great, I'm like okay, my point you're actually proving it you're saying that you're not ditching the iMac you're using the iPad as a supplemental device, that's vastly different from the marketing mantra that they have they're saying forget the iMac. Forget the MacBook Pro forget the MacBook Air forget the Mac mini forget a Windows PC because here's your new computer, and before you say oh, this guy's hater, well uh joke's on myself, because I bought one, and so I almost actually that's because people will say you don't even have one you're hating on it, Samsung fanboy, I'm like yeah, because you know I mean there's an iPhone here anyway. My point with that video and this one to a certain degree is hey. Listen, it's impressive! No doubt the hardware's a1 did we did any of us think it wouldn't be no like.

We all know apple's going to kill it with hardware. My problem is if the software doesn't meet not only that level of height but also level of coverage, I'm like what are we doing. Here's just a few examples and people have gone on Reddit and even iPad. Pro users have said to you: they really need to fix this again and people go. Oh, I don't care okay, 4x3 aspect ratio for an external monitor, support.

Tell me any computer, a computer that would get away with that it'd, be imagined if windows surface, whatever only could support that you'd be like this is horrible it'd be laughed out of the room forever. Why does it get to pass now? Let's, okay files, file management? Listen! I love the iPad. I love iPadOS in its current form, but I think there's a lot of work files, management's kind of atrocious right. It doesn't work like a normal computer, there are all kinds of work. Around, you don't really know, and I'll be honest with you for a company that pays attention to detail and a lot of other things.

A lot of the stuff you have to discover on your own, which is not a good user experience right, like even the gestures. If you were to hand this to anyone and say, hey put it in split screen and also bring in the sidebar view and all that stuff they'll be like I don't know what am I doing you know so some of these are kind of discoverable, which maybe that is a good way to do it. I don't know you, let me know down below, but again file management. You plug something in it may work it may not. You don't really know I mean the verge when they did their iPad Pro 2018.

A disco review did, like you, don't know so, there's a lack of confidence there. It only has one port so like there are limitations right, but you plug in a know any type of external storage. You can't even format it in files. Like again, I know you're saying oh that's an edge case or that's this, but I'm like any other computer. I mean I feel, like even a Chromebook could accomplish some of these things, and so it's weird to me that okay, we're gonna, put this in the same conversation as a laptop, but we're going to review it softly because it's an iPad and there are limitations and here's the thing I don't like.

I show all the positives like I'm like dude. This is a serious tablet. Now I give my experience, and I'm like hey listen. This is a luxury light, light workload like google, docs, email, spreadsheets split, screen mail texting on it right. That's all great, I would argue that's like 80 or 90 of people on iPads right, if we're being honest with ourselves.

That really is the use case and there's nothing wrong with it. But when I see videos and content creators and there's nothing wrong with this per se, but I think it's sending a wrong message to someone that maybe isn't an enthusiast again separating enthusiasts to average people. The oh, I use my iPad as my only device or my only computer, and this is what happened, and I'm like. Okay, like we don't treat any other laptop or computer like that, we don't go. I bought a Surface Book four, and I used it like a computer for a week and here's what I discovered like I'm like.

Okay, a computer, is a computer as a computer. We don't have to convince you that a dell or an alien ware or whatever is a computer. You just know it is why, usually because of the o right and the software right windows- macOS Linux, whatever I just see like this. This idea that we have to we got to make this I shouldn't say, got to we have to. We have to make this a computer, and it is man we have to and the fact that that is the overall vibe from a lot of, even, even like high-end media outlets.

If you consider them high-end like yo, it is you know you can do all these things, but here's the thing: here's how I know that some of it is somewhat fabricated. A lot of these reviewers, I'm not going to name names, I'm just saying some of the ones I've watched well, actually, there's one. I can't remember his name he's like straight up. He goes, I would say most people do not need an iPad Pro, but he also says it is an awesome device and there's nothing wrong with that, but people I feel like it generally like attacked when you go hey, listen! This is not a full-fledged computer! Well yeah, it is I'm like okay into semantics sure, but are people buying this and everyone that's using. This is doing all these protests.

They're, exporting, 8k, video, uncompressed, they're, doing all kinds of procreate, and they're, it's their main device, and- and here again getting back to my point I was trying to make before I got derailed by myself- was like you see these people, and they're always back to their iMac they're, always back to their windows, build they're, always back to like a main workstation. So if the iPad Pro is this device? That and again I know, there's going to be people. I know you do all these things on it. I get that I'm representing the general, I'm going to say the general population instead of average consumer, because we have not done the average consumer, a good, a good service on YouTube. Some of us, and so that's that ultimately, is my point is that there are so many work workarounds that are never focused on right.

They used to be, but now they're, not it's like it's overlooked. You know like okay, I get you can do these things, but don't only show me what it can do. Show me what it can't do, so I can make an educated decision. That's all that video really was. I wanted to bring awareness to the fact that there are some very rudimentary limitations to making an iPad your mains, your main thing and that's key right.

You have to take all of that together. You can't say: oh it's a supplement to my workflow, which is fine. It really is with sidecar and some stuff you can do. It really is a great supplement to a computer. But again, the rhetoric I see is this: is a computer replacement for almost anyone right and anyone can pick it up, and it's just like using a computer, and I'm like.

Is it though, because if I was to hand this to my family, this is an anecdotal kind of event. If I was to hand this to someone, that's used a window, computer, even a mac, their whole life. Even the dongle book pros that we've had for a couple of years now, which I hope they changed later this year, excited about that um. Okay, I have to plug in a flash drive wow, you have to get a dongle. Oh, I have to charge it and plug something else in oh there's, only one port, okay, I want to use it on a nice external monitor.

You know 21x9, oh, it only does four by three okay. I want to format this hard drive, because I need to put some. Oh, you can't do that. I want to have you know: resizable windows, uh. You can't do that.

I want to x, y or z. It's like these weird limitations that any other computer would be looked at like what is this can do all of those things and getting back to the price that is also playing into it. People go well, they don't want to. I don't understand this kind of mentality. They don't want to cannibalize their sales.

I'm like that made sense. When iPads were like five six, eight hundred I mean at the top end, like 900 bucks, sure you're right, they're not going to put macOS on it, they're not going to make this thing too compelling because they want you to buy a MacBook and an iPad. But now I could be wrong fact check me on this. I'm pretty sure the top end iPad Pro and, let's be honest, you're going to buy a keyboard, and they want you to buy a pencil so that kit is more expensive than a decked out m1 MacBook Pro. So how is that cannibalizing sales which further, I think, propagates my point that they're positioning this as a replacement like hey, you don't need to buy a MacBook Air which is a killer deal by the way you don't need to buy this mac or whatever you could just buy this iPad Pro for three thousand dollars right and get all your stuff done, and again you can right.

I could easily well maybe not easily. I could certainly replace you know my main computer, whatever that is, and that's nothing if you're going to say your main workstation like tell us what it is, and again you'll see him go back to it. You don't see. Let me know, I don't want to generalize or attribute things, but you, let me know what creator right that has you know nice setup has an iMac or windows build or whatever, and they got rid of all of it for an iPad Pro. That's it just an iPad Pro.

I don't know one of them. Well, I know a handful that said they started their channel where they edit their thumbnails. But that's the thing it's always like selective. Oh, I did this on here, but I did that I did 99 of the'm like yeah. This is like this cringy like I did like that to me tells me it's not there.

Yet anyway, I wanted to clarify again separating enthusiast right separating enthusiasts from the average consumer and I don't think a lot of average. Consumers are general people population. Whatever I said, they're going into an Apple Store or Best Buy and go hey, I know I have an old MacBook Air. I have an old, you know, Surface Book for well, that's not old, a surface laptop or windows, laptop whatever you insert the computer, and they're going yeah iPad Pro, maybe a few of you, but I would argue that most people aren't, I would argue- and again I get flack for this, but part of me thinks I get flagged because it's kind of true, I would say, 80, and I'm not saying, there's anything wrong with this. I'm just saying I think it's.

Furthermore, I think this is more of a realistic outlook. It's an it's a light workstation. That is also a very nice tablet. Right, video content. Any type of consumption and even a lot of creation, is fantastic on this, especially an artist.

It's actually a deal compared to the more professional solutions for drawing and stuff, but I think those vocal minorities of people that are. I do. I do all this stuff. Furthermore, I think they're trying to represent a larger group of people than that's really out there, and I'm not saying again. Furthermore, I know I've come off as kind harsh.

Furthermore, I'm not saying any of this is incorrect. Listen everyone's pro definition is up to them. You can do pro things on a Chromebook. You can do pro things on your phone. Furthermore, you can do pro things on any device right and so that term is kind of irrelevant to me.

But it's its. What are you actually doing on this and the follow-up right like again? If these larger creators are saying I know, you can use your iPad pros, I mean whatever like well. Why aren't you that's? What I would ask you know and that's where it gets into this seems to gloss over the workarounds. I want to see the coverage evenly distributed if you're going to focus on how powerful it is then showed me what it can do, and I don't mean like I'm going to export. You know a 444 uncompressed 8k video once and look how fast it did it compared to whatever like that is to me the most intellectually lazy thing to do like I understand that it shows off the performance.

But what are you doing day to day? That is utilizing that and people seem to really get upset, that I ask that question some people and I understand again that there are individuals out there that it really does fit their need, and I'm glad that this thing's out there, and you can look at the comments if you think I'm making this up. I have said: hey man, that's going to be sweet. I hope it works out for you. There was an individual that commented and said: hey like the amount of layers in procreate, like that's what I'm saying like how many people actually give out their use case, and, like I get oh, I made videos. I did this, it's like! Okay.

What are you using now? How has it been give me more information like what exactly did you create? How long did it take? What was the software you used? Instead, it's just like I do it, and I've made it my thing and it well. Why can't you, and I'm like okay anyway, I know I kind of went on a bunch of tangents to me. It's just a matter of showing focusing on the strengths, but we got to bring up the weaknesses and the hardware is not the weakness. It's the software and I would argue, let's be honest, that software is more costly and resource intensive for these companies than developing a faster chip, and I think that if we need to kind of take a little of the the craziness, that is the hype about the hardware and kind of redirect that to the software, because here's the thing there's so much potential, and it's gotten better, but there really is a ton of potential with the iPad and I think it is the future of computing, but listen they're charging you three thousand dollars for the computer today, not the future. Don't again don't buy stuff, hoping that they're going to do it listen.

There were rumors of the 2018 uh well in 2018 when they released a new iPad pros and those things were like insanely great, and they still are. I would argue, like a 2018 iPad. Pro is still beyond insanely great, but even then it was all about. Like oh iPadOS iPad, it's got to be or back, then it was still iOS. Now they made it up out of us and yeah they've done some things, but I still think they have a long way to go anyway.

I'm looking forward to WWDC, maybe that'll, address some of my concerns, but some of the stuff's pretty basic and people seem to overlook it and I think it's a little intentional there, but you. Let me know how you feel and let's chat it up. Peace.
