Is the 2021 M1 iPad Pro good enough?

Okay, let's talk iPad Pro. The new 2021 iPad Pro has a m1 chip. This isn't exactly surprising, because we've basically known that it was going to be essentially a m1 chip. The big question was just whether they would call it a m1 chip and lo and behold, that's exactly what they did. But the question is: is it good enough, so the biggest problem that the new iPad Pro has? Is this the old iPad Pro, which is really, really freaking good? So this is the cheapest iPad Pro of this new design generation, you could buy it's a 2018 Wi-Fi only 64 gigabyte iPad Pro I've had this thing for almost a year now or no not a year, eight or nine months. Something like that doesn't matter.

It is amazing. This thing is getting on three years old in October, and it does not feel like it. It is a phenomenal device and that's the problem as good as the new iPad Pro may be. This is the competition and the competition is really, really good. So what exactly is new on the new iPad pros? Well, there's.

Basically, four things: better cameras, 5g Dr, also known as mini, led and the m1 chip. Now those are both very good and not good enough in equal parts. It's a weird situation, but basically, if you wanted to compare the new iPad Pro versus in this case, we'll even go back to the 2018. The camera system on the new one is significantly better. Like the 2020 iPad Pro, you get dual cameras as well as a LIDAR scanner, but apparently they've been improved a little and some image signaling processing has been improved, but the big change is on the front facing camera, which now has a 122 degree field of view, which is pretty interesting and allows it to basically function like that Facebook thing that has been advertised for ages.

You know where it basically has a wide angle camera, and then it follows you around, and it can sort of pan and zoom. It's basically that which honestly is a pretty useful feature, and I hope it makes it to mac books. Like you know, it's kind of a cool idea: next up is 5g. Well, it's exactly what it sounds like on this generation of iPad Pro you can get LTE. Now you can get 5g cool.

So next up is the Dr display. Now this one is a little confusing because it's really only available on the 12.9-inch iPad Pro and I think honestly, it's a really exciting feature and I can't wait for that to start rolling out on other higher end macs. I think the way that apple is positioning. This is definitely as a pro feature. So if it's going to be on a MacBook Pro, it's going to be on the most expensive MacBook Pro, although I will say I'm holding out hope, given that the iPad Pro did get a price increase, but is eleven hundred dollars, maybe it's reasonable to expect it on a 14-inch, MacBook Pro, which is a similar screen size to the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, but in the here and now. I think this is a fascinating feature to get on the iPad Pro and yes sure it did end up, resulting in a 100 price increase from 9.99 to 10.99 for the 12.9-inch iPad Pro. I think it's going to be an interesting feature, and I'm going to be picking up one of these iPads because I think it's a technology that I really want to learn more about and experience.

Dr was sort of out of reach in Apple's ecosystem because it's really been confined to the Pro Display XDR, and I'm not gonna, try to spend five thousand dollars or six with the stand to get one of those things, and now that we're getting this in the form of mini led, which I would argue, is a superior technology to the local dimming zones used in the Pro Display XDR. This is now seeming to be both achievable and affordable. I mean the specs on this display are absolutely ludicrous. We're talking a thousand nits, sustained brightness, 1600 peak brightness, a million to one contrast ratio, and it still has 120 hertz promotion, p3, wide color gamut and 10 000 mini LEDs. That's insane! It's over 2500 local dimming zones.

Remember the pro display. Dr has 576 local dimming zones, so this is way more precise and should feature less of like the light blobbing, and it's on a less expensive platform. That's the technology that we've been waiting for, and I really hope that this gets rolled out on other macs. I really hope that we get to see it on more pro level devices. I think it would be more useful to have this tech on.

You know like an iMac where a lot of people do video editing as opposed to the iPad Pro, which still, for some reason, does not have Final Cut Pro, even though it has the m1 chip interesting transition there. Speaking of the m1 chip, this thing has a m1. Now this was surprising not in terms of what the actual chip could do, but in that apple chose to just call it the m1. I guess it makes sense because from a marketing perspective it sounds like. Oh, we are putting a laptop chip in a tablet, and it's crazy fast when in reality, if you think about it, they kind of did the opposite.

They kind of put the tablet chip that happened to be really fast in laptops, and now in an iMac and yeah. It is absolutely nuts that you can buy an 11-inch, iPad, and it'll. Have the same processor exactly the same processor as a 24 inch iMac, but realistically the m1 is already a tablet chip, it's the same core layout and TDP as the a12x, which is already in my iPad Pro from 2018. It's just that the m1 is now a lot more powerful unless you're doing some absolutely crazy stuff. On this thing, you're, probably not going to notice a ton of extra horsepower, it's not really necessary in iPadOS.

I mean this is one of the most fluid and responsive and fast tablets I have ever used. It is unbelievably good, and this is three years old. This is an a12x iPad Pro one thing that I think is definitely going to benefit. The new iPads is support. Life macs are regularly supported under mac, OS updates for seven eight, sometimes almost nine years.

So if that becomes true for the iPad as well, that would be absolutely insane. But here 's's the big problem that I have, so I have the magic keyboard for my 11-inch iPad Pro, and I love it. I think this is a fantastic accessory, and it really adds a lot to the iPad experience the trackpad the backlit keyboard. It's a fantastic accessory granted it's an expensive one, and I think that's a problem with the 12.9-inch iPad Pro right. Now, it's a bit of a tough sell at eleven hundred dollars for just the iPad itself without the case you're already spending a hundred dollars more than a m1 MacBook Air, which has a full OS and a keyboard and a trackpad already included.

Once you add the case, you're looking at 1450 at which point you're well beyond even m1 MacBook Pro money and it is starts to get difficult to justify and keep in mind at 1450. You still only have 128 gigabytes of storage. That's a pretty tough sell using an iPad Pro with iPad. Os has optimizations and relevance in different areas than a mac and that's sort of the way that apple's trying to position these things they're similar, but they're they're different categories. However, I don't necessarily know whether you could consider replacing a MacBook Pro with an iPad Pro.

That's something that I'm going to have to figure out: I'm going to buy the 12.9-inch iPad Pro in its base configuration without 5g with the magic keyboard, because I have the base model m1 MacBook Pro, which is less expensive, and it's a very interesting comparison, I think so definitely make sure to subscribe. If you want to see that, but basically the way I see it, the bottom line is: if you already have a 2018 iPad Pro, you probably don't need this generation. If the only thing you're excited for is the Dr display, I think it'll probably come to a lot more apple products in the future, so I wouldn't necessarily buy it just for that yeah. It's definitely going to be a tough sell, but we're gonna wait and see. I'm definitely excited to take a look at it because it's going to be an interesting comparison to make.

So, if you're interested in seeing that make sure to get subscribed, leave a like on this video and don't forget to comment and follow me on Twitter leukemia, and with that I will see you guys in the next video you.
