iPhone X vs Pixel 2 vs Sony A6500 - Video Stabilization Comparison!

What's up guys, Matthew Mona's here, video stabilization on smartphones have come a very long way. In fact, it's getting so good right now that you can be walking or jogging and taking a video at the same time and the footage will look pretty good. I thought it'd be pretty cool to test out the pixel, to which I think has the best video stabilization on a smartphone against a mirrorless camera. Like my Sony, a 6500 using a three axis gimbals, and I've also included the iPhone 10 as a reference. So, let's find out how far we've come. So first up is the Sony, a6000 and gimbals.

This is the 3 axis gimbals by Zion crane, it's doing a very good job at keeping the image stabilized and the motion very smooth. In fact, the only movement is up and down from the camera operator. Walking next up is the iPhone 10. So optical image, stabilization is doing its thing. It's a little more shaky than the previous clip, but it still does a very good job and the video is completely usable.

I love the way the colors look, there's no artifacts and the image is still very clean to use next up is the pixel and I think the video stabilization on the pixel is better than the iPhone 10. Now there is a little of artifacts I find the iPhone tend to have a more clean image compared to the pixel 2. When it comes to video now we decided to place the pixel 2 on a smartphone gimbals. This product also happens to be by Jean Soon, and it's doing a very good job, almost as close as holding the phone handheld. Next up is a writing test.

This is again the Sony, a 65 hundred with the three axis gimbals, it's doing a fantastic job. Everything looks nice and smooth. The movements are great. There's no artifacts. Overall, a beautiful image.

Next up was the iPhone 10. Now you can see that optical image. Stabilization is having a lot of time, keeping up, there's a lot of war page, but there's still no artifacts and the image still looks perfect. Next up we decided to do the pixel tube handheld and, as you can see, it's doing a much better job with image stabilization, but, as you can notice, on the bottom left and in the sky, you can see some serious artifacts, which is ruining the quality of the image so better image on the iPhone 10, better stabilization on the pixel. Now we're back to the pixel ? and the smartphone gimbals, much better closest it's gonna, be to the camera and three axes gimbals.

Everything is nice and smooth, but you can see the optical image stabilization, fighting the gimbals in terms of keeping things nice and smooth. Now we have all four beside each other. Of course the top left looks the best. This is the smoothest it's using the three axis gimbals and mean the rest of them all. Look pretty close.

You can see that the pixel two is still doing a better job at the iPhone 10, the image looks better and in the bottom right you have the smartphone gimbals, which is pretty close to the camera gimbals. Now we do the writing test, as you can see here again. The top left-hand corner is the best one, a 6500 followed by the bottom right then the pixel 2, then the iPhone 10 I mean I, didn't admit. All four of these cameras do a great job at stabilizing the images it's just when you start going really fast and running. The pixel 2 does a better job with the video stabilization, but the iPhone 10 does a better job at keeping the image clean.

So let's wrap this test up now. This all comes down to what you're doing and what you need your smartphone for, if you're doing very slow movements, walking, maybe just panning from left to right or panning up and down I think the iPhone 10 does the best job. The stabilization is still good enough, and you retain the image quality at the same time. But if you're doing quick movements running maybe you're on a bike or doing something very fast, the pixel 2 does a better job of video stabilization at the cost of having that artifacts, while you're shooting video. So, overall, you get a better video image quality with the iPhone 10, but you get better stabilization with the pixel ? now in terms of photo quality.

That's a totally different story, and I'll leave that to a separate review, but this is strictly for video. Now, of course, these are nowhere as close to actually having a professional camera and a 3-axis gimbals. But man have we come a long way from video stabilization in our smartphones, a pixel ? does a perfect job anyways that wraps up this video.
