iPhone 12 Pro Max: Honest Review - Two Months Later

Okay, so I've been using the iPhone 12 Pro max for about two months, pretty much since the iPhones came out and uh. This is a full two months. Experience review, first, to know where I'm coming from I've had plenty of iPhones. In the past, I've had pretty much every generation of iPhones since the iPhone 4, but I've also tooled around with the android ecosystem. I've had pixel phones, I've had Samsung phones, so I'm trying to come with this with a most holistic view. I can so.

The first thing I'm going to talk about is the specs and performance um. The one thing that the pro max specifically has done better than most other phones, I've owned specifically most other iPhones- is battery life. Its battery life is killer. It lasts a super long time, never once even come close to killing it, and especially in quarantine. I've been watching a ton of videos right YouTube all the time.

So amazed with that battery life, 5g is not a thing yet. So I'm not even going to really talk about it.5G, I'm just going to kind of table to the side and say yeah. It has 5g most of the time it's actually been slower than LTE when I've done a side-by-side comparison, so don't buy a phone for 5g unless you're looking to keep it for a long time the speakers holy crap. These are loud, uh, I'll use. This I sold my HomePod mini.

That's how good the speakers are on this thing. I don't listen to music. I's just it's so much easier to just pull up a song while when I'm using YouTube music right now, pull up a song play it over my phone speakers, it's loud. It's clear, it sounds great. I didn't need a smartphone.

I don't need a smart home device because these speakers did the job. So that brings me to the display and although the display is big gorgeous colors are perfect super accurate um. There are two problems I have with the display right. It's not resolution. Okay.

I honestly resolution over 1080 on a phone. I just don't care about that. Much and people who is a pixel peep- and you know some of you, video files. It's a word uh, some of you all really care. I don't I just don't.

I really don't care about the resolution that much um, but there are two things. Apple is doing that everybody else isn't and has moved on from, and one is this big old notch. And yes in the beginning, when we first got the notch, folks would say: oh you know, I don't really notice it anymore, uh, it's just kind of up there and whatnot yeah, but it's still there, and I do notice it when I'm looking at other new phones. So, for example, you get on Google here and uh the notch they're kind of hiding it in the UI, but it's still there. If you watch a video, that's widescreen, the notch is there, and so it annoys me all right having that much of a percentage of my display missing, because there's this big old chunk in it is just stupid and annoying the second one- and this is a logistical issue for apple because they sell so many iPhones but the refresh rate.

This phone is 1100 and has a 60 hertz, refresh rate display sold in 2020 every other flagship phone every other one that is even close to that price is rocking 120 hertz display pretty much it's something. I want something I'm going to get. When I get the new Samsung phone, it uh. I can't stand the 60 hertz anymore. I just can't, it feels old.

It feels dated, and I notice it a lot of people claim they don't notice it. You do yeah you'll notice it you will once you get it in your hands, if you're saying you don't notice it you're not trying and if you're not trying you're you're you're lying, so yes display could use some help. Cameras, great cameras on the phone right, not gonna, berate the cameras, uh they're, they're, good cameras. Okay, I if you had any phone from the iPhone 7 to now you're, getting a good camera on the phone. Yes, there are improvements and oh look at the color accuracy and whatnot, but since the iPhone 7, you can point your phone at something take a picture of it.

You get a pretty good picture, one! That's good enough for social media good enough for sharing one. That accurately represents what you're looking at for the most part, I got nothing to complain about. I made a whole another video ranting about smartphone cameras, uh just dropped, yet yesterday a few well, I guess today is yesterday when I posted this a few days ago. Um go check. It out, see what my thoughts are on how we review smartphone cameras.

Now another thing this phone has is MagSafe, which has seen its share of criticism. I've been using MagSafe uh to charge it every night through uh the case this case, yeah there's a little ring from the case, but you kind of just all right. The ring is gone now. MagSafe is really cool. Um it'd be cool if it was a universal standard, so every phone or whatever could start using it, but I get apple wanting it to be prepare for pr proprietary.

Is it like to stay on iPhone cool, though or like switch away from android? No, it's not it's fine, it's cool, but we don't need it, but I do enjoy it right, and it's nice that the MagSafe charger will work on other smartphones using the QI standard. So I have a huge you know shout out props to apple for not making it a new standard making mag safe backwards compatible, which is hard to do with a new type of charger. Can't talk about chargers without talking about the lightning port. It's dumb, and I hate it, and I wish it would go die in a hole. I don't like the fact that apple keeps the lightning port around on some of their products, but not all of them.

It's not on the new, the new iPad Air, the new iPad Pro have USB type c. All the macs have USB type c, but the iPhone 12 Pro max has a lightning port and that's probably because Apple's made for iPhone brand or marketing deal or whatever it's called where they get a royalty. Every time somebody makes a lightning accessory, so Apple makes money off of keeping this stupid thing around. It's not what's best for the consumer. It's not what's best for technology or the world, it's not a holistic choice.

For anything. It is kind of a selfish choice, in my opinion that they haven't tried to switch to USB type c, and honestly they should have done it two years ago, but whatever yeah it's there and then. The last thing I want to talk about with the experience of this phone is its overall design um. So it's got this new squared off boxy design, which I really praised. I said I liked it.

In the beginning, the industrial look is cool. I recently got to hold a galaxy s21 in my hand and uh yeah, this boxy design- I was cool because it was different. Now it's not cool anymore, all right. It's not functional. It's not comfortable in the hand it makes the phone feel larger, which you know when you're sitting there watching something.

It's its whatever. I also like the flat sides, because I can just stand it on a table when I'm getting b-roll. It's a look, I believe it's more of a form over function. Decision function is key. It's got to work well and look good.

So while this phone looks awesome, I don't, I think, the boxy design, I'm a little worried, not worried. I'm I'm it's here to stay. Obviously, they're going to keep this design for the next three years is my guess so meh I better get used to it. I don't like the shininess on the pro models. Uh, honestly, the shiny metal around the edge.

It gets fingerprints, real bad. What I do like is the matte finish on the back uh, but none of that matters because it feels heavy and expensive, and although I have Apple Care on it, I still I'm going to slap that, oh god where'd the case, go it's gone forever, even though it feels heavy and metal, though I'm gonna still slap a case on it. Well, this has been a great phone um. I have been on iOS for almost a year straight now, and it's time for a change. So very soon you will see me switching to the Samsung Galaxy s21, uh, and we'll see how long I stick on that.

We'll see how much I have buyer's remorse. How much I regret it that phone I'm going to be getting on Friday and immediately opening doing an initial impressions, video and all that stuff. Now another thing about this phone is kind of like a last one. More thing I want to mention all iPhones have this, and it is the apple entrapment you get stuck in their ecosystem, real bad, I'm having a whole video on uh, how painful it has been for me to leave the Apple ecosystem. I die.

I don't full in to the Apple ecosystem. Right, it's been, it's been a trick to get out of it. So that's the whole thing anyway, uh, if you're new here go ahead and hit the subscribe button. If you made it this far in the video, my name is Ryan. This is the text box.

We will talk again soon.
