iPhone 11 vs. iPhone 12 Camera Test! Can You Tell The Difference? By foXnoMad

Hi everybody foxes nomad here, and today I want to help you travel smarter by giving you a camera test between the iPhone 11 and the iPhone 12. Now why these two cameras why these two phones well apple, is still selling the iPhone 11 on their site. It's 200 cheaper than the iPhone 12, and one of the main features that most of us are looking for. When we get a new phone, is the camera now spoiler alert the iPhone 12 camera is better it's. What you would expect in a newer iPhone you'd expect the camera to get better from the previous version, but this test really isn't about which camera is better. It can you tell the difference in these pictures between the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 11.

? Now, if you're, coming from a camera like the iPhone 6s or the iPhone 8, or something like that, both of these cameras are going to be a big jump up in quality for the camera, but since the iPhone 11 is still on sale, maybe you're thinking about a smaller upgrade from the 10s or the 10, and you're thinking about. Do I want to save those 200 on the iPhone 11? Well, let's see, does it actually make a difference in terms of what you can see when you take these pictures, can you actually see the difference in the photos, but let's start with the differences, at least on the spec sheet, which are subtle. The iPhone 12 and 11 both have dual cameras, a wide and ultra-wide, though the iPhone 12's primary wide angle is a little wider than the iPhone 11, and it has a wider 1.6 aperture versus the 1.8 on the iPhone 11. Apple's, also using a new 7 element lens design to improve pictures in lower light situations on the iPhone 12. Both iPhones have two times optical zoom and five times, digital zoom and different effects like portrait mode.

But for this test, what I did was, I just took the camera I took the phone took a picture, took the other camera and the other phone and took a picture from the same spot and that's it. I didn't tap the screen to focus. I didn't mess around with any of the settings. Furthermore, I didn't change the colors. Furthermore, I didn't edit these photos at all, it's as simple and as straightforward as a test can be so, do you think you're ready for this camera test? Let's get started alright, so one other hint before we get started is that the iPhone 12 has smart HDR, which is apple's latest iteration of HDR processing, which is high dynamic range, which means that a lot of photos that have bright, brights and dark dark you're going to get better colors and better reproduction of the exposure across those bright brights and those dark dark.

So I think I've, given you enough, hints now, let's jump into the camera test all right. This is a hard one to start off with, because the sharpness and the colors look very similar. But there's a potential clue here. If you were paying attention earlier I'll, give you a chance to think about it. So if you notice that, although the color, sharpness and overall exposure in these two pictures is very similar, the one to the left has a slightly wider frame, even though both pictures were taken from the same spot.

Those of you who noticed that difference in the angle wideness guessed correctly that the iPhone 12 is the picture on the left. This one was a tough one, though, because of how closely both cameras reproduced this image and if it weren't for the wider angle, you might not have been able to tell, but that one gave it away all right on to the next one. So here's one that doesn't have as obvious of a towel I'll give you a second to think about it here, which picture was taken with the iPhone 12. If you guess the one on the left, then you're correct the clues on this one are first in the reds of the stop sign. So you see here in the middle, how much more color detail you get versus the one on the right.

The iPhone 12 also tends to shoot warmer, preferring reds and oranges, but the blues here also aren't as blown out there are more details as well in those tree branches, and you can see how the building looks blurrier here in the iPhone 11 picture. But then, if you look at the iPhone 12 picture, you can almost see the outline of each individual brick. These are subtle differences, but when you pixel peep, it's hard not to appreciate the improvement. How about these two bridge photos with fairly high dynamic range? They both handle the darker parts of the image well, but I'll, let you guess, which is the iPhone 11 on the right or the left. If you guessed that the iPhone 11 is on the left, then you were right.

First, the bridge concrete is more vibrant and warmer on the iPhone 12 with more details. Against a lighter background, that's the difference in dynamic range I mentioned earlier, but where you can really see the difference is here in the darker lower left corner in the iPhone 11 photo. This part of the picture is really dark. You can hardly make out the branches, but when you're in the iPhone 11 pictures, you can see the color of the leaves again it's subtle but noticeable when you've got both pictures side by side. So for this next test, let's try something a little different.

Here's a pretty ordinary photo which camera do you think I took it with. If you guessed the iPhone 11, you are right and, to be honest, the difference between the same shot with the iPhone 12 looks very, very similar. The colors along the shore here are a bit warmer and the tree branches a bit sharper. But if you zoom in these two are very, very close good guess, though, so what about the front-facing camera? The physical cameras have the same specs, but to me the differences in processing really jump out here. Can you tell the difference? Is the iPhone 12 on the left or on the right? I think it's pretty easy to see now and if you guess the iPhone 12 selfie is on the left, then you are right.

The first thing to me that jumped out is my eyes, see how much more color and detail there is on the iPhone 12 photo. The darker parts of the picture, like my mask and hat, aren't as dark. So you get more detail. Both pictures to me look good, but the added highlights and less dark shadows. Look better on the iPhone 12 selfie.

In my opinion, it could be a little darker. There might be a little too much exposure and some highlights, but in general I think the iPhone 12 selfie looks better okay, so I think you're getting the hang of this. So let's go through rapid fire. A couple more is the iPhone 11 on the left or on the right. It's on the left.

Did you guess that one right, let me know in the comments what gave it away now? Let's move on to a video test at dusk is the iPhone 12 on the left or on the right. Yes, the iPhone 12 is on the right and I think in this low light situation, the bigger aperture of the iPhone 12 really benefits it over the 11 and the newer lens design also seems to help here, because the iPhone 11 video just looks darker, especially along the water's edge. Here you can see that those dark kind of lose a lot of detail, whereas on the iPhone 12, you still have that detail on the water, even though those are the darker parts of the image. Now, let's move indoors is the iPhone 12 on the left or on the right. I think this one looks pretty obvious to me: did you guess right on the iPhone 12? Here's the last one in terrible lighting, where both cameras really struggle fair enough.

So any guess. Okay, the iPhone 12 is on the left, but understandably both cameras really struggled here because there's not much light in this image at all, so they didn't have much to work with, but again the differences here were very subtle if at all, so what does all of this mean? Well? First, it means that the iPhone 12 has a better camera than the iPhone 11, and it shows in a lot of these pictures in the colors in the dynamic range in the sharpness. You can see that the iPhone 12 is an improvement over the iPhone 11, but those are all things that we expected. We expected that the iPhone 12 would be better than the iPhone 11 camera, and we expected that the iPhone 12 would work better in low light situations which we saw in a couple of these pictures. But none of this is to say that the iPhone 11 camera is bad.

In fact, up until a couple of months ago, the iPhone 11 camera was the best iPhone camera without a pro in its name, and now it's the iPhone 12 and next year it will be the iPhone 13. The cameras will get better and better and better with each iteration of the iPhone no surprises there. And yes, the iPhone 12 takes noticeably better pictures in most situations when compared to the iPhone 11. But when you take away those side by side comparisons, it becomes a little more difficult to tell which camera produced which picture. Having used both of these phones extensively.

Now I can tell the difference is generally the give for me is when it's a little warmer a little more saturated reds and if you look especially in those darker areas of the picture, you'll usually get more details on the iPhone 12. But when you take away the comparisons becomes just a little more difficult to pick out, which is which so is it worth upgrading to the iPhone 12 over the iPhone 11. I'd say if you're coming from an iPhone 10 or before then the 11 or the 12 are going to be a noticeable jump, whichever one you go with you're going to see a big difference between the pictures that your let's say, iPhone, 6s or 8 or even 10, can take versus the iPhone 12 or the 11. Now, if you're already using the 11 or the 10s, maybe and thinking about upgrading to the 12, I think at that point the difference has become a little more subtle and really depends on your use. If photo and video quality is very important to you.

If you take a lot of pictures with your phone, maybe in a professional environment or in a creative setting, then the iPhone 12 might make sense over the iPhone 11 you're going to get better pictures from the iPhone 12. But if you're on a budget, and you're coming from an older phone, especially then I think you're going to be very happy with the pictures the iPhone 11 can take.
