Welcome back everyone, let's go ahead and talk about the first batch of iPad pros that ever came out and see how they hold up in 2021. , now, first off the first very first iPad Pro that ever came out was technically the iPad Pro 12.9 inch model, but there was the iPad Pro 9.7 inch model as well. That was pretty much the same exact iPad for the most part, except for a smaller display and a little less ram, and that was the specific model that I had performance wise. They were the same. Really it was just a difference in size, and what's crazy is, is that 12.9-inch iPad was a very, very big iPad. I've seen them, I played around with them, and it was actually bigger than the current 12.9-inch iPad that we have now- and I can definitely tell you these first batch of iPad pros were pretty interesting. I liked them a lot.
They weren't necessarily like the craziest devices ever, but I think that 12.9-inch iPad was just so crazy into the fact that it was such a massive. You know difference between the current iPads that we have the iPad Mini and the iPad. You know eighth generation and the iPad. Furthermore, you know fourth generation whatever it was at that time and that bigger end model, which was that 12.9-inch iPad Pro now looking on the front and the outside and everything you can definitely see that they still look pretty much the same. Furthermore, you know they look very current.
There's really not something. That's super crazy with them. You have touch ID on the front. Really. The main thing to keep in mind with these iPads is that there was quite a bit of bezel around the whole entire display, and that was something that really stuck out to me.
You know when I was reviewing these whenever I had them. That was something that you know. It was a pretty big amount of bezel to this day and age, but it really isn't anything super crazy. You know what I mean. The iPad 8th generation is still had a lot of bezels.
The iPad Mini is a lot bezel right now, so it's not really a crazy big deal. Now you have that front-facing camera and on the bottom you have the lightning ports. You have. You know headphone jacks, on these things too, but surprisingly we had this kind of like dual. Furthermore, you know speaker setup on the back, so you had speakers on the top and the bottom, which was very interesting at first.
When I saw this I was actually kind of freaked out, but now it just kind of makes sense and I think the newer iPads have it too. I actually don't really remember that. Well, but I like it, I like having that dual stereotype of effect on it, but that is something that's really cool and I actually kind of like it nowadays, and you do have that single camera setup on the back as well, and I think for sure these iPads the main kind of selling point of them. Besides, you know, the Apple Pencil was probably the fact that they were the pro models of those iPads and with this iPad that I have specifically that 9.7 inch model, it actually still performs pretty well, I use mine, that's kind of like just like a media device. Sometimes I have my iPad Pro third generation, so there's not really a huge point to use this one specifically, but it's a pretty performing heavy tablet and I think it's an awesome tablet for sure now funny enough there's a funny story.
I bought this like five or four years ago. It was a long time ago and somebody was selling it as an iPad Air 2. So I actually bought it as an iPad Air 2, and I was going to make a video on it. But surprisingly, it actually got shipped to me, and it was the iPad Pro which is arguably a better tablet than the idea 2. , so that person probably thought it was an ear too.
They look almost the same. So that was pretty surprising to me. So that's kind of like a funny note, but I still think the body feels great. I don't think there's a big problem with these first generation iPad pros, but I will tell you camera wise. There is kind of a little of a difference between the first gen.
You know 12.9-inch iPad Pro and that 9.7-inch iPad Pro that came out just you know a couple of months later: that's actually the camera. So, first, on the back, we had a 12 megapixel sensor on the newer 9.7 inch model, but an 8 megapixel sensor on that 12.9 inch model. So it's very weird how we have a better camera on the second tier model than the previous one, and maybe because the iPhone 6s camera was so great that they had to put it on this one, I'm not really to sure, but there were only a couple of you know months difference between these two things. It's not like. It was like three years you know before and beyond that their internals are almost exactly the same too.
Now the biggest difference I can think of. Besides, you know the camera quality being better overall is the ability of actually being able to shoot 4k video on the iPad Pro 9.7 inch than the iPad Pro 12.9 inch at that time, but eventually that second gen that 12.9-inch iPad Pro was a little better, and it gave you a better experience overall, but I think the camera quality on both are actually pretty decent. You have like an iPhone 6 camera on the 12.9-inch iPad, but you have you know, 4k. You know iPhone 6s camera on the iPad Pro 9.7 inch and that's a pretty big reason to go and upgrade from the 12.9 inch to the 9.7 inch, which is so crazy because it's kind of a downgrade because it's you know a smaller display- and you know, maybe not as powerful, but you are getting a very powerful iPad on both of them at the end of the day, so camera quality on the back, I think, is great for both of them kind of the fronts again. Another big difference: five megapixel front facing camera.
The 9.7 inch model 1.2 megapixel front, facing camera on the 12.9 inch model. So again, a little of a difference, I'm so glad apple has kind of you know, made them a little easier to kind of. You know, compare to the 4th, gen and 3rd gen, because internally they're pretty much the same you're just getting bigger batteries and overall bigger sizes on these newer ones. But at that time it was a lot harder to kind of you know: okay, there's a lot of trade-offs here and there, but I'll tell you for an iPad if you're just doing a bunch of Zoom calls- and you know different things like that- you're probably going to have an okay experience on this tablet for sure, so in terms of the camera setup thumbs up for me, I think this camera is still pretty good, but I will tell you something: that's very, very good on both these tablets that has held up extremely well throughout time was actually the software. You know both of them have that Apple A9 chip inside them, and it's actually the a9x.
So it's a little more above than the standard a9, and you know it started off with iOS 9 for both of them and right now they are on iPadOS 14 and, as I've mentioned before, these iPads having this type of capability is extremely awesome. It's an extremely long amount of software that we had on both of them. Now, I'm not too sure. If it's going to be going beyond iPadOS 14 it could, and it could not, so there are two different ways to look at this. First, when you look at the iPhone 6s, you know it's really going to be following that type of architecture, so it may stop getting iOS support at iOS.
You know 14, but when you look at the iPhone 6 those devices pretty much stopped at iOS, 12 they're still getting security updates, but there was an iPad two of them, the iPad Mini 4 and the iPad Air 2 that actually had the apple a chip inside it, but the apple 8x chip, that's still being supported. So that's another big deal, the iPhone. You know success. Having that a9 chip may stop getting support, but the iPad Pro's, these two may actually end up going a little further. So I'm not too sure it's like kind of hit or miss, but it could happen, and I think that would be awesome so that in and of itself is a humongous asset for this device.
But on top of that, the battery sizes of these two things are pretty big, so the 9.7 inch model, the smaller one, has a 7 306 William hour battery, but that iPad Pro 12.9 inch model had a 10 307 William hour battery. That is a massive size battery to have on this device and, as I mentioned before, dude, that is a crazy big battery that thing's going to be lasting. You forever, even that standard iPad Pro that 9.7 inch model is going to be lasting you for quite a bit of time too, so you can't really go wrong with either one of these and that's a huge asset for these. So when it comes down to it, I think the 12.9 inch model has that way better battery, but the 9.7 inch model is still perfect too. So, in terms of that, that covers up probably one of the better things about these iPads now winning it off with the performance, as I mentioned, both them have the 9x chips inside it.
The bigger difference was the ram so the standard one, the 9.7 inch, one only had two gigs of ram. The top tier model had four gigs of ram, and I can definitely tell you the performance whenever I did anything with these iPads, specifically the 9.7 inch model, because it's the one I own, it's a perfect performing iPad. You know there's really not that much to hate on it. I think for day-to-day tasks, it's going to be fine. I think you are going to be running into issues when it comes down to ram management kind of on both of them at this point, mostly because they are kind of getting to that point where they're a little outdated- and I think four gigabytes of ram is still really, really good.
Furthermore, I mean that's a lot of ram to have still on any iOS device, even on an iPadOS device. But, as I mentioned before, that 9.7-inch iPad is still okay too, but if you want to take it to the next level, if you want to get a perfect performing iPad, the iPad Air 4 is probably the best performance to the know: price tag in my opinion, but I'll tell you performance on both these iPads is still good enough for the most part. Now, if you're, trying to you, know replace your m1 MacBook for something like these, I really don't think you're going to be having that great of an experience, but you'd be surprised how smooth these iPads still are and for day-to-day tasks. Typically, what I do they actually handle things that I throw with them. Pretty you know, okay, so I think when it comes down to that, I'll probably give it a thumbs up for sure.
Now it's not perfect, but I think performance is still okay for the most part. So to kind of sum up this video and say answer the question: is the iPad Pro? So worth it in 2021. Well, this is what I'll tell you know with these iPad pros the first batch of the first generation. I think these iPads were a solid. You know type of iPads to release at that time.
They had so much going for them, they're still extremely decent, in my opinion, but I think when you look at you know the software life cycle kind of coming to an end as well as some other characteristics. When it comes down to the body, they both still feel extremely premium, but that doesn't mean you know they are performing really well or anything like that. I think some of the biggest assets for these things is the battery life. It's still perfect. The performance is still pretty smooth, but I think, sooner than later, as I mentioned before, the software is going to slowly become outdated and slowly become phased out.
So whether it gets to your know, stop getting support this year or next year. It's going to happen fairly soon and that's why I would probably recommend people to kind of jump ship and then go to something like an iPad Pro. Second generation, maybe at the bare minimum, but if you can't afford it, go to the iPad Pro 3rd gen or the iPad Air 4. Those are going to be giving you much better experiences overall. In my experience than something like this iPad, you know I think these iPads are great but, as I mentioned before, going up a little going to the iPad or for one of those iPads, I'm probably going to give you a better experience in my opinion.
