iPad Air VS iPad VS iPad Pro - Which iPad Should You Buy in 2020?

This episode was sponsored by paperlike, hey guys. What's up, it's Carl, and we've got the entire 2020 lineup of iPads in front of me. So the newest, of course, was the iPad Air. This just dropped the other day, and I'll leave my unboxing video linked up this way in case. You want to check it out, but this video is all about the range of iPads which one I think you should buy, and we can kind of start at the lowest end. It's the cheapest.

It's the 8th, gen iPad, and then we're going to go into the mid-range, the iPad Air and then the iPad Pro, which is the oldest of the bunch. But of course, still the most expensive I'll start off with things that I like don't like, go through the range and then of course, my final recommendation, so the 8th, gen iPad, 329 I'll leave Canadian pricing as well. I know that the dollar for us sucks right now and for that you get the base entry level in storage, which is sadly only 32 gigs, at least over on the iPad Air. It starts at 64, which I still think is slightly too small on the iPad Pro it's 128. So this is the smallest of the bunch.

It's got a 10.2 inch retina display, and it isn't bad in any means it's just dated in terms of the design. So if you take a look at the bezels, you still have a very large forehead on the bottom. I get it. It still has touch ID and that's fine as well, and the design just seems a bit old and dated, especially when you compare it to the other two devices, totally cool, if you're trying to save money. But if I were apple, I would just shave off the forehead still keep that front facing camera and once again I said, I'm totally fine still having touch ID at the bottom.

The biggest changes actually coming to the 8th, gen iPad is what's found on the inside, so it has the a12 bionic and that's actually the same chip found in my iPhone 11 11 pro max. Of course, I'm upgrading to the iPhone 12, but still a very capable chipset and everything on the iPad still seems super quick and snappy, comparing it to the other two devices, and I'm assuming 90, probably even 95 percent of people eyeing the entry-level iPad are doing it for media consumption, playing a couple of games watching content online or even answering the occasional email, and for that this device is more than enough. You've got an eight megapixel camera on the back and a HD camera on the front, and by no means are they any good they just get by in what they do. So, if you're using it for FaceTime, if you're using this for the occasional photo, don't expect the greatest quality. But for that price point I don't think that's the priority of most people.

Keep in mind, though this is the only iPad now across the range that still uses the OG Apple Pencil. So this is the weird one where you still have to plug in to the bottom, because it still has a lightning port at the bottom, so obviously not the most aesthetic and just make sure you don't snap off the Apple Pencil while it is charging, but still you get access to all the v1 benefits, and it's still way better than most styluses on other tablets and when you kind of compare the overall price so 329 and, of course, 100 bucks for the Apple Pencil you're. Under that 500 price point for an entire package, you can even have a case on that as well, but regardless for whichever iPad that you end up, choosing the one accessory that I would grab is a screen protector. This one's from paper, like it just makes the entire writing or even drawing experience way smoother, and the most important thing protects your iPad screen from those nasty scratches, so I'll still recommend the 8th gen iPad to most students for people that want to get into the apple tablet game for people that are just looking to save money. I think the 8th gen iPad is the best value across the range we're going to switch now to the newest, the iPad Air, and, if, for whatever reason, color dictates your choice, this is the only one amongst the three that you can grab in different color options.

So it is the new red, the blue as well as green. You can still also grab this in space, gray or silver and over on the OG iPad. This is the only model that you can grab in gold and colors aside. This starts off at 5.99 and, like I mentioned, you get 64 gigs of storage as the base entry. It has a 10.9 inch display so slightly smaller than what we see over on the iPad Pro bezels are reduced in size. We no longer have a big chin or a big forehead.

It's all kind of uniform, and they've actually moved touch ID to the top. Where the on and off button is that's a welcome design change for the air lineup, but the big changes I still think are coming on the inside as well. So this has the newest a14 bionic chip. That's the same! One found on the iPhone, 12 and 12 pro it's the new flagship chip from apple and just kind of comparing benchmarks. It is definitely fast, and it's actually faster than their pro model, which we'll get to which is very surprising couple that, with the fact that the air now has access to USB, it's got a 12 megapixel camera the same one found over on the iPad Pro.

It uses the second gen Apple Pencil, so it still snaps to the top. You can kind of see why this is my recommended iPad to currently get right now, because when you go 200 more so 799 for the iPad Pro it's an older device, it has an older chipset, it's the a12z bionic, so it's technically slower than the iPad Air, but obviously apple realizes that it's got to keep some pro features to sway. Some people over the key differences here are in the display, so that 0.1 inches larger. It also has that 120 hertz refresh rate, so it actually feels quicker. It feels snappier and that's just the perception that your mind has, because everything is moving faster.

Furthermore, it's hard to switch back to a screen with a lower refresh rate, once you've been blessed with something so quick, but it also does get slightly brighter, so 600 nits versus 500 over on the air. I think that's negligible, and the last key difference is found on the camera. So you'll see, we've got a couple different sensors. We also have a 12 megapixel ultra-wide. I don't really condone taking too many photos of my ipad.

I'm not really the type of person that does that, if that's your jam totally cool, and we also have the LIDAR scanner. So I think if you use your iPad, a lot for augmented reality, so those are very specific use cases. That's maybe where you might be swayed to get the iPad Pro other than the screen refresh rate, the ultrawide camera and LIDAR sensor. If you don't need any of those things and want to save a couple of hundred bucks, I would definitely still lean over to the iPad Air. You can use the extra money to upgrade accessories, get say a magic keyboard case.

You could grab that and the 2nd gen Apple Pencil for the same price as what you get for solely the iPad Pro. So you kind of know the direction that I'm going for I'm curious, which device you would grab. Let me know down below in the comments. It definitely makes sense that the newest iPad is the one that I'd recommend, but I think apple hit it out of the park with this one. The newest chipset, we've got a brand-new redesign Apple Pencil 2.

Those pro features of having the extra refresh rate, of course, those extra sensors on the camera. I don't think are worth 200 extra bucks, anyways hope you guys enjoyed this episode and the slew of apple videos. We've got on deck, of course, iPhone 12 coverage and, if there's any other comparisons you want to see of the new iPad Air. Let me know down below in the comments, and I can definitely make it happen, we'll catch the rest of you in one of my next AIDS or vlogs peace.
