Huawei launches Mate X2 foldable phone

Let's take a look at what's going on with Huawei, which is out with a new foldable phone, despite U. S. sanctions, putting a dampener on the future of its smartphone business. Let's get more on this with Mr device, Mr tech and all things: Huawei Arjun carpool once again, hi ARJ, hi, Mandy. Well I'll. Just give you a little of a rundown about this mate x2 foldable phone.

It's got a screen on the outside, you open it up. It's got an even larger screen, it's packed with the latest and greatest of Huawei's technology from chips to cameras as well. Furthermore, it's going on sale in China only for now on Feb 25th, but really this shows Huawei is still keen to push ahead with its high-end smartphone business. Despite some pressure from U. S.

sanctions, as well as questions over the future of that business. Now there have been two major areas where Huawei's been hit by us sanctions. First, the export blacklist, which has cut off its access to Google's android uh operating system. That's really hurt Huawei's business in international markets and the second is the US moving to cut far way off from its chip supplier TSMC, which has really caused all the concerns about chip shortages. Even Huawei has said that it is facing a chip shortage as well, and that's why this phone's interesting, because the chip is Huawei's own proprietary, Karin, 9000 chips and Richard you, the CEO of Huawei's consumer division on the unveiling of the device said the company had enough of these chips and had enough production capacity to make these devices for customers.

That was an interesting point, but I think the biggest part of the unveiling really was around harmony OS. This was Huawei's own operating system it launched in 2019, and it finally announced that this operating system will be coming to Huawei phones come April and the mate x2 will be one of Huawei's first device to get that users internationally, as well as in China, will be able to download the operating system onto their phone now. Harmony OS will be key to uh Huawei's smartphone business going forward because it's been cut off from Google's android operating system, and any success of this will be predicated on the success of that operating system as well. Look we're not expecting huge volumes for this phone. It's very expensive at around two thousand eight hundred dollars uh, and also it's unlikely to do well in international markets at this point, but clearly Huawei just trying to show that it's sticking to its guns on the high-end smartphones and that it can still bring cutting edge tech to the market.

Tan veer back to you, you.
