Google Pixel 4a Review: Camera Magic! By Gadgets 360

You're, looking at the most affordable member in the Google Pixel lineup, the Pixel 4a, considering the disappointing launch price of the Pixel 3a and Google's decision to not launch the pixel 4 last year, or even the pixel 5 in the Pixel 4a 5g this year is once again quite sad. We only get the Pixel 4a now in one color and in one variant speaking of choice, there is no Pixel 4a XL either now, thankfully, the Pixel 4a is priced aggressively this year at 31, 999 rupees, and since it is a pixel, you know it is camera focused. So is this new Pixel 4a worth your money and has Google done enough this year to get people interested in its smartphone line? Again, let's find out. This is a pixel smartphone. So let's dive straight into the camera performance first, because if it's not perfect at what it's best known for then, is it really worth your money now? The Pixel 4a has the same single front and rear cameras, just like the Pixel 3a, with a very similar resolution as well, and while I would have loved an additional wide-angle camera at the back, it isn't there yet not a very good start, but let's move on now the camera app has nearly all the shooting modes. One would expect there's no manual mode, but you can enable raw capture through the settings menu now, while the hardware isn't particularly impressive, the Pixel 4a still manages to deliver some stunning looking photos.

I mean just take a look at these. The landscape photos shot during the day. Looked stunning. The photos had natural, looking colors and well-balanced exposures. Details were fairly good, but when magnified, I noticed a bit of noise and finer textures and edges didn't have very good definition.

Close-Ups had very good details with rich colors and a pleasing background blur in portrait mode. I could digitally zoom in up to 4x and the shots generally looked striking with good edge detection details and colors. The Pixel 4a did an equally good job with low light photos. Even without night sight. Images looked clean with minimal noise, colors were vivid and details were well-defined.

Now night sight helps correct the exposure a bit and in very dark scenes. It can make an impactful difference. As for the front camera, the Pixel 4a doesn't disappoint here, either delivering some perfect shots, selfies shot in daylight back in very good detail, and thanks to the white field of view, you can get quite a bit of the background in the frame mode works. Well here for selfies too, in low light night sight makes a big difference to the type of photos you can capture when used in combination with the screen flash. The results are even better.

Last but not least, video performance, the Google Pixel 4 a can showed up to 4k video at 30 fps. During the day I found the quality and stabilization to be very good. Videos captured with the selfie camera are also electronically stabilized, even in low light. Video quality is pretty decent with good exposure and a tolerable amount of shimmer. When you walk about now, I really wish google had put an ultra-wide angle camera at the back, as that would have made the setup kind of perfect, but even so, I think overall, the Pixel 4a still delivers some consistent and reliable performance.

Whenever we have a new video now, there's something very likable about the Google Pixel 4a's design, I mean it's not flashy or in your face, in fact, it's the exact opposite, and yet it kind of looks very attractive. Google has used an unibody polycarbonate shell with a soft touch. Matte finish, it looks nice and doesn't attract too many fingerprints. The Pixel 4a is relatively light and slim and the overall compact dimensions of the body and the rounded edges make it a very comfortable phone to handle now before delving in about the other details of the phone.

Let's take a look at how much of an upgrade it is over. The Pixel 3a, the Pixel 4a, gets an improved processor, more ram and storage, a slightly bigger battery and a larger 5.8 inch OLED display all this at a much lower launch price. Now coming to performance, the Google Pixel 4a uses a Qualcomm snapdragon 730g soc, which is not the most powerful soc in this price segment. But it's good enough. You get 6 GB of lpddr4 x, ram and 128gb of storage, which again are fairly adequate, there's no wireless charging or IP rating, but you do get stereo speakers.

The relatively powerful hardware, combined with Google's lean software, makes the usage experience. Wonderful, unlocking the phone with the fingerprint sensor is quick, the interface is snappy, and the always on display is great for peaking at the time or unread alerts. Google Assistant speedy, too, be transcribing what you just said or fetching results. The pixel 4, unfortunately misses out on a higher refresh rate display, as even 90hz would have made the experience. Even better gaming was also enjoyable.

Everything from simple titles such as Mars, Mars to heavier ones such as Call of Duty mobile, ran smoothly. I didn't feel any heating issues either. Other than the side of the frame getting a bit warm tracing the front is a 5.8 inch, full HD, plus OLED display with support for HDR 10 playbacks and is made using corning gorilla glass 3 for scratch protection. Now. Another thing to point out here is googled, has thankfully ditched the massive bezels of the previous generation for much narrower ones on the Pixel 4a, the borders around the display are still a bit thick, but the good part is that they are symmetrical and in return you get a balanced viewing experience watching content also looks great, colors are vivid, blacks are deep and text is generally sharp.

The screen gets very bright too, but whites look a bit murky, even at full brightness. Now, since this is an OLED display, you might think that it has an in-display fingerprint sensor, like many other phones in this segment as well. However, the Google Pixel 4a has a capacitive rear mounted fingerprint sensor. Now. Trust me, this isn't a big deal as a fingerprint sensor works very well and can be used to pull down the notification shade with a swipe gesture.

However, there is no option for face recognition on the Pixel 4a. As for endurance, you get a 3140 William hour battery, which is a modest capacity by 2020 standard. This is not a two-day battery life phone for sure, but it did get me through one full day with medium to light usage, which I think is still acceptable. Now in terms of software, the Google Pixel 4a can be updated to android 11 and if you've used any pixel smartphone before then you know what to expect. The interface is completely clean, with no bloatware and just the essential google apps pre-installed there's a personal safety app from Google, which lets you set up, emergency contacts, etc.

There's also a pixel tip app to help first-time pixel users get acquainted with their smartphone. Apart from all of this, Google has also incorporated some basic gestures which can be found in the settings app. You can enable gestures to quickly access the camera, silence and incoming call etc. Being a pixel phone, google also offers minimum of three years of OS and security updates. So should you buy the Google Pixel 4a? Well, unlike last year's Pixel 3a, the Pixel 4a isn't crippled too much in terms of processing power.

It features a good enough soc, as well as enough ram and storage to offer decent gaming performance and battery life might not be as good as what the competition achieves, but despite a small capacity, you should expect this phone to last, nearly a full day on average. Now, at the time of this review, the Google Pixel 4a is selling for a promotional price of around 30 000 rupees online, which is slightly lower than its retail price of 32 000 rupees. Now, even at this price, I think that it's still a great smartphone for anyone looking to capture good quality photos and video. So that's been my review of the Google Pixel 4a.
