So, what I've got here today, guys is the Google Pixel 3a XL, and it was google's first phone and what's going on to become one of the best value, android lineups in the mobile space. Without a doubt, it arrived on the scene with a lot of fanfare hype and great reviews at release for the performance to price ratio. It represented. It brought the best features of a flagship device for the price of a mid-range phone, and what I want to know is: is the pixel 3axl a phone you should consider buying in 2021 guys my name is better and welcome to another episode of direct tech. Where we'll be talking all things, tech, news reviews and all the cool gadgets I find, and if that sounds like something you're interested in then hit that subscribe button and ding that notification bell. So you get notified every time, there's a new episode of direct tech, but for now, let's just jump into today's video.
So the pixel 3axl is a phone that I've carried with me five days a week for a year. I've used it extensively for work, really putting it through its paces and at one point it was my daily driver for three months. While I contemplated a return to android with this free AXL. All of this got me wondering: is it a phone? I would recommend to someone in 2021 is two months away from its two-year birthday and a phone that is in a unique position compared to other mid-range android devices. You can pick one of these up brand new in a sealed box for 275 pounds one bay or used in good condition on somewhere, like Facebook marketplace, eBay, amongst other places for anywhere between 100 and 150 pounds.
So, let's have a quick recap of the specs of the free AXL. The 3axl came with a quite impressive spec sheet at launch, and it's even more impressive. Now, given its reduced price, you get the quiet capable snapdragon 670, which features the arena 615 graphics score from Qualcomm. This is backed up by four gigabytes of ram and 64 gigabytes of non-expandable storage for build quality. We get a plastic body with a two-tone finish like on the original pixel 3 flagships.
The buttons are very nice and click just satisfying to press, and the display is a six inch 1080p OLED with a 402 pixels per inch resolution and is very well calibrated. It's delivering some really eye-catching vivid colors, albeit with bezels above and below it. Given the data design on the front, you won't have any issues watching YouTube or Netflix on the go. I use it regularly to enjoy some YouTube on the go, and I've never been left wanting better display. There are two stereo speakers, one front facing and one bottom facing, which delivers some good audio quality, considering it's a mid-range device they're quite loud and clear, compared to other devices in this price bracket.
So let's take a quick look at what that looks like now. You get your usual USB charging port, which supports 18 watt fast charging, which is always handy, and you also get Bluetooth 5.0 a rear mounted fingerprint sensor, but no face ID, because google just deems 2d face ID simply too insecure to use, so they just stick to using the rear fingerprint sensor, or you can enter a code on the lock screen to unlock it now at launch. There was concern about the snapdragon 670 in the 3axl in regard to how it would perform over time as it aged and how it would handle future software updates and after the using this device for a year, I feel like I can comfortably say the snapdragon 670 has truly put those concerns to rest. It really starts with system animations being fluid apps open, quick enough that I rarely notice any lag and overall, the device is just still quite responsive. It handles games such as Call of Duty well barely even stuttering and delivering graphics, that, whilst on top of the pops at ultra settings, they are more than good enough running at full HD.
My free AXL has been running android 11 since day. One of its release and currently has the latest monthly update, and it performs really well. It's also had numerous feature drops such as live caption and macrophotography, both of which I've used a lot, especially macrophotography and the snapdragon 670 just handles them really well, it's clearly still capable. After almost two years now speaking of photography, the free AXL delivers the full photography experience. We've come to love and expect from a pixel device.
This phone's camera is exceptionally capable and will blow you away with the photos you can take from just simply pointing and shooting we find the same sensor on the 3axl that we find on the pixel, 4 and 5 series, the only real difference between them being the processors. The 3axl takes exceptional portrait photos with superb edge detection and even better low light photos with Google's incredible night sight, and if you own a tripod of any kind, you can even take advantage of Google's macrophotography mode and capture some truly amazing photos of the night sky. This is something I've had a lot of fun with taking a cheap tripod. With my mobile camera mount, I drive around and capture some photos of the stars in nature. At night, the camera on the free XL punches with even today's flagships quite easily.
In my opinion, you can check out some photos. I took just the other day on my twitter, which is in the description below, and you can follow me on Twitter, where we can discuss lots of interesting tech news that I'll be sharing as it breaks. In terms of video. We have an 8 megapixel, front-facing camera, which can record in 1080p 30fps and here's some of the footage I took earlier today with the front-facing camera, and let me know what you think about in the comments below hey guys. So this is the sort of video you can expect on the selfie camera on the Pixel 3a XL.
Let me know what you think about it: I'm shooting in a 1080p 30fps, so yeah. This is what you can expect from the selfie camera. The rear camera is the usual 12 megapixel sensor, which can go up to 4k 30fps with optical image. Stabilization and both the camera support, high dynamic range, meaning you'll, be getting some really nice review colors in your videos. Now, let's take a look at what we can expect from the rearview camera with some footage.
I also took earlier today and again. Let me know what you think about it in the comments, and now we're shooting on the rear camera of the pixel 3 XL in 4k, 30 fps, and let me know what you guys think of the stabilization, the audio and the overall quality of the video footage that you're seeing now one of the main benefits to owning a pixel device is the fact that this is google's very own device, which means you're getting a clean, android experience. That's rich in features as well as getting software updates thick and fast for the entire support period of this pixel's lifespan, something that until very recently, even 1 000 Samsung devices couldn't compete with, and you'll be getting the new version of android every year on release day. Monthly security updates and regular feature drops, which will continue to add to the growing list of impressive features already found on this. This device we've seen features such as battery saver mode, live caption and macrophotography filter their way down to the 3axl, not long after launching on the pixel 4 series and Google has optimized them perfectly for the 3axl, and I've yet to see live, caption lag behind the video I'm watching on YouTube when I'm in a noisy work environment and as you've seen in the earlier photos, macrophotography mode is so much fun to play with.
So, with all of that said, would I recommend the pixel 3axl in 2021 yeah, absolutely in a heartbeat? There is no other mid-range device that you can buy for 100 to 150 pounds offering this much for the money you're getting a superb software experience, and some great hardware like the OLED display and stereo speakers, and it takes some amazing day and night photos captures some really nice video, and it just feels really nice in the hand it's just fun to use. It has got some time to go before google stop supporting it, so whether you're just looking for a phone just to take some great pictures with or replace a broken or lost device on the cheap. The free AXL is an absolute steal, and it offered so much at such a low price that nothing else out. There can compete with I thoroughly enjoy using this device, and it's device that rekindled. My love for android after I fell out with android pixel embodies everything that is good about android inside a smooth, clean experience which is just a joy to use, and it can turn anyone into a photographer.
Who can take photos you'd be proud to show family and friends. You will honestly be the envy of your iPhone mates when you're back out at a dimly lit bar in the near future, and your 150 pound pixel can take a point and shoot superb photo of you guys in the dark and their thousand pound. iPhones can't, and I'm telling you that from personal experience. So that's all for today guys, but if you've enjoyed this episode of direct tech, I would really appreciate if you could hit that like button smash the subscribe button and ding that notification bell, and also, if you guys, could share this on your twitter- show your friends get them to watch it on their YouTube.
