Google Pixel 2 XL In 2020! (Still Worth It?) (Review)

What's up everyone welcome back to the channel another silhouetted video and this specific phone that we're going to be talking about is honestly one of my favorite phone lineups I. Think I've already said this before you know. Stop me if you've already heard it, but I just reviewed the original Google Pixel, not too long like literally like three days ago, and this whole pixel lined up pretty much stem from the Nexus lineup, which I own the Nexus 4 I've owned every Nexus phone and pixel phone, but every single Nexus phone I've ever owned, which was the Nexus 4 that I use. Personally then I switch I, think to the Nexus 5 for a little, but didn't like it, but that Nexus 4 was on my favorite phones and because you know basically because it was stock. There weren't really many compromises, and it felt like such a dope phone for how much I paid for it and the Google Pixel to excel, which is the one I'm talking about now, is pretty much that phone reincarnated yeah there's some really weird things here and there, and you know some people have really strong opinions on this phone, but I feel like this phone is a very, very cool phone in 2020, and I'll. Pretty much explain why.

Obviously, now this one came on to 2017 in October, so this year it will be turning three years old right now, it's like two and a half years or give or take a little and looking at the front, it has a six inch Leola display this one is 1440 by 2080, with 538 pixels per inch, and that panel, in and of itself is a very respectable panel in 2020 I mean I doubt any panels this year are going to be. You know, crazily over 1440p. That pretty much seems to be like the 1080p of like this standard and I think this panel is still very good, pretty much I think when I compared to something like galaxy s, 10, it doesn't look as sharp, and I'm curious to see how the S 20 is going to look like, but this panel still isn't that bad. It's all that display at the end of the day, and it seems very, very good. You have a little of bezel on the top and bottom with front facing speaker and I.

Think it's definitely cool and I. Think with that front facing speaker kind of effect, it actually adds a little of value which I really do like, and it makes sense for there to be a little of bezel there. Before with like the Google Pixel, there was just so much bezel on it for no reason at all this one. They slimmed down the bezels, but then they added those front-facing speakers which is really, really cool, so at least there's some necessity there, and we don't really have a lot of phones nowadays. With that front facing speaker, we have dual speakers, you know stereo surround sound or whatever, like the iPhones have, and some other phones have, but this phone actually had that capability, which is a super awesome thing to note: a front-facing camera up there to you have USB type-c, which is really calling this phone as well.

On the back, you can see a fingerprint sensor which I actually, like you guys know this I, like that physical fingerprint sensor on the back. I, don't really like these under the screen and stuff I. Think it's cool, but I do think they're kind of faulty I don't really like face ID that much either. Hopefully we can get some type of you know physical fingerprint sensor on almost these phones coming out, but it's whatever, as well as that back facing camera, and you have a little of glass up top, which is cool. Sadly, there is no wireless charging on this phone was towards a humongous issue on this phone, but we'll talk about in a second but really on the outside.

There is ip67 dust and water resistance, which is cool too, so you can go up to 1 meter of water for 30 minutes. So there is some practical. You know some durability on this phone too, which is awesome and in terms of the outside that really pretty much covers it. It was a very minimal phone. It doesn't have any like crazy.

You know, like astounding features on the outside, nothing that you know will interpret you know that will sway you or persuade you from away from this phone or to this phone. Just sheer looks you know something like a galaxy s 10, you know with the OnePlus 70 Pro and the iPhone 11 Pro. Those phones might look a little better, but this phone just looks way more the helmets in the way you know it's not like it has a hole, punch display, or you know anything like that, the OnePlus 7 pro being the exception. It doesn't have a notch or anything, and this phone really kind of held up in terms of design. For the most part, it looks just like a Pixel 3a or 3a TO.

To be honest, now, now talking about this software, this is probably the biggest advantage for this phone. This thing was released with Android 8.0 Oreo. We are able to upgrade it currently to Android 10 point: oh, and that's probably the biggest advantage for going with a Google Pixel phone is to prolong software support. Now we just saw the Google Pixel, the original one if they get Android 10 point no, which is awesome, I am unsure. If it's going to get Android, 11 I'm, pretty sure it's not going to get a hundred eleven.

That doesn't really make much sense, but Google might pull out something in their cart, so they can actually go and extend the life cycle. This one's even more than they already have, could be a possibility. I'm, not really to sure. I don't want to get too far into it, but with the Google Pixel to excel, like I said it came out a year after the original Google Pixel. So this thing 100% is getting Android 11-point, oh, so this thing just got: Android 10 is going to be lasting for all these, like a little updates here and there as well security updates and then once Android 11 comes out, it's going to be getting that full version as well, so you have about like another year and a half left of the software cycle, which is so pretty cool.

You know this phone came out in 2017, and we're still kind of looking at the future of this phone, and you know being excited for what the next version of Android has to offer a lot of 2017 phones like the galaxy s ate all those LG phones. They are not getting those software updates. For the most part, this phone is still getting that which is really, really cool. So in terms of software, that is pretty much it, but you also have some routing and custom ROM capability behind it as well, but I wouldn't really look too far into that until this phone stock software is, you know it's pretty much done, so you know when school will stop supporting this thing. Then I would kind of you know, be more comfortable recommending it that route, but you can always do that too.

There are tons of ROMs for all the Google Pixel phones, there's a lot of development community behind it. So a huge thing right there. It's a humongous thing to hit on now. Moving on from that, let's go ahead and move on to the performance side of things when this thing was released, and obviously now because I didn't nobody, you know engineered these differently since then. That's a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset, an outscore CPU in Arena, 540 GPU, and there were two different models of the equal pixel to excel.

There was the 64 and 128 gigabyte model. Both those models had four gigabytes of RAM. Now the weird thing is: is that you know the base model was 64. That's kind of a low storage amount. I understand iPhones are the same way, but I don't really like that either.

My current phone is the 11pro I have 64, gigs and I. Don't really feel like I'm ever going to run out of storage on it, I'm just kind of like a cheap person who wants to buy the cheapest one, but then I always regret it. I would always recommend people to getting at least a mid to your storage model, but even that top tier 128 model. That's not really a lot of storage, which that kind of doesn't necessarily look too good for their future Ni sour the future looking into the future, basically of the pixel to excel that's kind of a con with this specific phone. It's not a horrible thing, but that is one important thing to note, but that kind of covers that in the storage department now the actual performance of this phone is still very good.

It's very smooth, it's very crisp whenever I'm loading things or swiping through the pages or anything I, don't really find myself running into too many issues, and it's a smooth experience. You know I relate this basically to like the iOS experience, because you know this is on stock software, because there's not a lot of background I, don't really see myself running into a ton of problems in terms of the choppiness of animations and stuff, I. Think Android 10 kind of cleaned out a lot of the things that Android PI was wrong with Android 10, in my opinion, wasn't really like a crazy UI u-hall, where, like changed everything I think it was more so kind of cleaning up a lot of the things yeah. There were some cool features added here and there, but I think it really did clean up a lot of what Android PI pretty much was messed up on, and I think they made it a smoother experience. Overall, the gesture experienced a super cool I love that so much it just has so much fluidity into the whole entire UI, and it makes the phone feel like a brain.

It makes it feel like an iOS device at the end of the day in terms of app performance and everything. Once you have the apps loaded, it's fine loading into the apps. Isn't that bad either it's sometimes the rent management can be a little weird. A lot of Android apps are pretty demanding so that the four gigabytes of RAM it might be good for now, but you know very soon into the future. You know this whole 2020 release of phones, they're, going to be adding insane amounts of RAM we're talking like 1012, maybe even 16 gigabytes of RAM on some popular model phones.

So we're going to have to wait and see what happens in 2020, but I. Think four gigabytes of RAM is pretty much the base. You know, RAM amounts that we should have in a phone I, think six or eight are going to be the standards coming up. So it's good for now, but in the future it might be a little wishy-washy, but I think in terms of performance. It's pretty good, and it'll get you by for at least you know this year in this life cycle.

But as long as you're demanding isn't like too crazy, you don't demand the most amount of power or whatever then I think we'll be perfectly fine. So, in terms of performance, I know it's kind of confusing, but hopefully that covered it. Everything onto the cameras. This thing had a single 12.2, megapixel wide-angle lens on the back to be able to shoot, 4k videos that up to 30 frames per second 1080p at up to 120 and even 720p at 240. If you want to do that, a single eight megapixel front facing camera, you can shoot 1080p videos on that and with that back camera, I think quality, wise, the video quality, wise I think it's very good.

You have optical image stabilization, which is really nice. That's like a standard, allot tees and I. Think it's a very good camera style. You know, I think. The only thing that it lacks in terms of like the camera itself really is the audio quality which doesn't really have anything to do with the camera.

It doesn't have the best audio quality and a phone right now I mean even at that point. The iPhone 10 definitely had to be, but I think in terms of the camera quality. It does have a couple here and there in the camera UI, but it's pretty basic, but it gets the job done for sure. The only downside of this camera which I've hit on in so many phones is, it lacks the amount of camera hardware features, so it doesn't have a telephoto lens doesn't have an ultra-wide. It doesn't have those specific things that the nits like that the latest and greatest have, so it's kind of a downside for this phone.

It's not going to be like a killer thing that would like to persuade people not to buy this phone, but it is one thing that you know if you own this phone, and you're, seeing all these new phones come out, you might feel like. Oh, like you know, that kind of makes me feel away because I don't have those amount of camera features. Those must be better, so quality wise, video quality, wise, it's pretty good still, but it doesn't have that all true ID doesn't have that telephoto. You know that's kind of a big thing to consider so, but I still think the camera quality is so very, very good for being a 20-17 phone in 2020 and moving on to the battery. This thing has a 3520 million power battery and that battery size is actually very, very good and very respectable, and for my pixel to excel the batteries, only degraded like 7%, or something like that- I'm, not a crazy number at all.

So it's still like that. You know over 3,000 million of our mark, which is really, really cool and I. Think this battery life is still very good for it's the time ping, but it also depends on how well your battery has aged. So if the person you're buying your phone from because I don't think you can get it to Excel brand new anymore, you're, probably going to buy it used. If the person you bought it from you know, didn't take care of it or if there were issues with it, then your battery life might not be that good, but if it was at that full 100%, and it's definitely still a pretty decent battery life and for it being on stock Android, that's an even better mix.

So to kind of sum up this whole entire video is the Google Pixel to excel still worth it. I know, I said stuff still worth it in 2020 I will say 100%. Yes, this phone is still worth it in 2020, there's really not too much to hate on it. You know 2021 when it's kind of at its last software lifecycle release, it might be a little different, but I think this phone still has a lot of going for it. It has you know an extra version of software coming out for it.

The camera quality is still great. The screen is awesome. The front-facing speakers you have USB type-c on this, really the only thing that'll ax like wireless charging, which is like a necessity on the phones and the lack of camera features, but you're having pretty decent battery life, and you can pick up one of these things for like less than 300 dollars. So I would highly recommend you guys if you are in need of a phone if you're looking at the pixel to excel or if you have a pixel to excel. It's still a pretty decent phone for you to own right now or even pick up later on, or for you to still keep for the time being so that pretty much covers it.

If you want to buy the cheapest pixel to excel like I've been saying, eBay is probably the best way to go. That's where you're going to find it the cheapest, but I will find the cheapest one on Amazon and link it down in the description below.
