Game performance comparison for the 2017 and 2018 9.7" iPads | Apple Arcade Ep. 4 By Macworld

Ready down yeah, anytime, alright, okay, hello, welcome to the fourth episode of Apple Arcade I'm, your host Life Johnson, and over here you have my co-host and muscle: okay, hey everyone, and what we're going to do. Today we have the new nine point: seven-inch iPad that came out this year that child Tim Cook announced last week in Chicago when our senior editor here, Roman Loyola was there on location to get it, and you know so. We got this nice review. Coffee I'm actually doing two full review too, so I'll have that published, probably tomorrow and today, we're going to do a hands-on, and we're gonna show how the game performance you know holds up. So when I originally envisioned. This I thought that I was just gonna.

You know, show you some games on it and see how they performed into everything. But what I have over here is I. Have last year's nine point, seven inches I've had now if you've been watching this. The thing is: is that these are virtually identical. You have this little black strip in the back, and this isn't a nine processor, and this is an ATM processor, but otherwise they're, basically identical.

That is until you actually start playing the game, so I. What I was doing was a comparing a lot of games in here. There was somewhere I didn't actually see that much difference, and it kind of surprised me hearthstone on boats, I couldn't really tell any difference at all. I'm going to be playing a little of six later on today, and I was surprised as intensive as a game. That is because you know it's always been considered a game that can really only run on PCs and when I reviewed it.

You know some time ago. I actually had a little of top of a hard time playing it on my iPad Pro it's a little small performance issues and stuff like that, but I'm surprised, I, don't really see that many differences I haven't actually gotten to a very late stage game, but that's a thing so, but the problem is, is, so I decided to go to the big favorites which we've recovered in pastel arcades, which is fortnight's battle, royale and pub G mobile player, unknowns, battlegrounds, mobile, and I was surprised. There's some massive differences on here and there's heavily a heavy pix elation on the nine, the old nine points. Yeah, people will see that. So what are the spec differences and price differences between the two real quick? Basically that they are exactly the same that it's, and you get the new one for three hundred and twenty-nine dollars and everything they have the same type of camera.

They have the same front and back and stuff same dimensions this one because I'm this one is actually a cellular model. It feels a little heavier, but it's not that much. It's not really not that much of a difference, and so that was one of the things that turned people off. You know it good. The other main difference is, is that you have apples to pencil supports on the new one, whereas you don't own the old ones, and if you actually like using the Apple Pencil, which I do I find that you know it's not just good for art.

It's also good for writing right good for a sieve later. You have that this tree, but the funny thing is I think it's because you have to actually get the point on the individual characters and stuff like that, those settlers and stuff it's a little actually easier with the finger and I noticed that when I had first revealed it for the iPad as well, but so what we're going to do here? We're gonna start off a fortnight, and I'll show it to you what it's like on the new iPad, and then we'll hop over into the old one and give you a better idea, different the difference, since these iPads are basically identical. This is what that's why I've gone with this here, as opposed to your know, dragging in an iPad Pro or something like this I. Thank you for getting this iPad. That's what you're wondering if you know, should I spend money on the new one, or you know, because it's being heavily discounted in some places.

Right now, you know get one of the old ones, because I think I've seen it I think I actually posted a deal on Mac world a couple of days ago that where people were selling this for $250 or something because this one's out now, and so this would probably help you give a better idea of which one you should buy if you're wondering it, especially if you're a parent thinking that you should get this for your children. So, let's hop in let's play fortnight, yes play all right, and I'll switch over, and it was interesting. This game, Tim Cook, you know, was talking about how great this iPad would be for education and everything- and you know there is some, and you know impressive, new apps that comes with this. You know schoolwork and stuff where teachers can more easily hand out assignments and things like that, but the thing is: is that also for gaming? Yes, well, people are an iPad in the classroom, apparently the leap of so many people are playing fortnight on their phones, whatever on their iPads on other that they're actually shutting down to Wi-Fi in some schools, because it's too much of a drain or if they haven't shut it down. It's just really slow, because, apparently that many people are playing fortnight well, I, remember our old computer labs when I was in junior high and high school were all Macs uh-huh, and we were playing you know back then marathon, mm-hmm I, don't know if you ever played that game, but that was like you know, ancient school.

Before there was Halo there was marathon and a descent. So here's a bit of fun fact I had made sure that these were all up and processed properly. What's going on here we get this downloading forever, because once again our Wi-Fi is spectacular. Here. I did a speed test right before we started, and I was getting about 12 megabytes per second, but hey.

So maybe let's try. You want to start out with the old iPad and see if it works out. Don't we do some other ones, so this is here on the right network to just it went up 1%, so it's uh I'm on the main one? Do you think I should get on the guest network? No I, always a great escape. Ok, yes, let's go in here. I'm going to check this to first to see what we're doing, and so, while that's running, but yes, we are a technology company that doesn't know how to have good Wi-Fi on the web.

Connection is actually spectacular on YouTube, be ox, says that was me last night, I had to wait about 20 minutes, so I, almost wonder if it yeah I would feel a lot better if I knew that it was the server side we'll see. So this one I was already ready to go. I was actually in the lobby, so we'll jump you in you can go ahead and look at it. You know you look at that. I am super pixelated and compared to what you're going to see in here, I mean you know.

Maybe it doesn't look like that much of a difference when you're doing, but if you go from one to the other and I really wanted to show off, we start off with the new iPad, because you would see they total see the difference. This almost looks like Minecraft by comparison, it's so ridiculously pixelated, and this is so important because of technical issues. We were on the old one, and luckily I was already in the lobby for this one. So I didn't have to wait on anything, or now it's 6% on the other one I. Can you unplug the audio real, quick just to make sure yeah audio and there we go there.

We go alright. So yes, let's do this and there's some of that a little of animation. Differences I noticed too, but look at this. This is not spectacular. So it gives you an idea- and this is the old one.

The new one is a massive improvement over. This got fluid motions. You got, you know, there's a lot more richness to the textures. You know. If you look over here everything you know, look at her arms everything looks a lot more pixelated and that it is pretty crazy to difference.

I've seen a lot of reviews where they're saying that, basically, what the difference in processor means is that apps open a little faster or something like that? No, once you actually start to jumping into games, these games should always kind of be the bellwether. For this type of thing, you start seeing some massive differences and, like I, said I didn't really see it. In some other games like hearthstone and even a little of six smaller games like thumped, which is a rhythm game, didn't see any differences they're not enough to worry about, but yeah so and Domenico on Twitter is asking is at 60fps, see that's the thing. I can't actually get a there's no way to do out FPS counter on here, and it does tell you what setting you're on right. Yes, well, I certainly do with defaults.

He or yes. It certainly does a pub G because will actually tell you to give you an idea in pub G. You start off with the uh. Excuse me, you start off with the what, with the medium settings on this one worried as it defaults you to the high settings on the other one. So, but it's as you can see it's playable, but you would definitely notice a difference.

I mean that's, that's one thing yeah, it is playable, but it's. This is such a more beautiful game on the new iPad, it's kind of crazy, but I, don't I! Think on here it automatically defaults. Now I could be wrong. Yeah was. If anyone out there knows of a good way to benchmark or see some FRAPS I would that be helpful? Yeah, you can see here the very almost complete lack of It's, and I'd be interested to see if they have any kind of the shadows and stuff on the other one, but I knew it's I mean look at that.

It looks very flat. So we put this down, so I can play better. Yeah, for tonight will be a tricky one to really tell because it is already so cartoon right so like if you maybe you know it's funny, I would say because of that, because we get away with duty, it's actually a much more visible, because if you're looking close there, those pixels and stuff you, you don't see that as strongly as you do on the the more modern version, and so I was busy talking there as opposed to, and if you keep an eye on what a percentage are we at on the of the new one, we're at thirty percent, all right, always one as well, once I get updated, we'll switch over, and then we'll compare the two but so yeah. If you were getting a less expensive iPad, this other version. It's you know it is playable, and I'm.

Yet to find any weapons I mean you can answer this later, but like I would think that, because it's cartoon you can get away with it being worse, graphics you can versus like pub teammate feel even worse. I mean this is just my speculation but uh huh. It's funny I would, from my brief look at it. I would actually say that, as far as looks between the two I would say, pub G actually does a better job and yeah. You didn't have that.

You know there's no way to zoom in here, but she didn't have that very strong pixel as pix elation that you have there, and I am not finding any weapons at all, but police nobody's shooting at me, so we're at 41% on the new iPad, and so I wouldn't would do not hold that against it. But I think it is definitely more us than the actual iPad, but I've been very happy with it. You've, probably known from previous, shows that I use my iPad Pro a lot. Much 1.9-inch iPad Pro, but I've found that I love just tossing this one into my air. We go finally got something and tossing that to my bag and I, barely notice it for most tasks, I don't need a super Pro stiff I'm, not an artist, unfortunately I just write and stuff, but I do like to play some games, and, but you know considering this is you know this is an ATM chip for, as you have the 18x fusion and most of the modern iPad pros? It's its it's.

This is pretty good, so I've heard some people saying you know that they were really thinking about getting the new iPad. Just that you know the $321 one, and I would say if you don't feel that you need the know, the pro, which has a faster refresh rate, which really shows up when you're doing using the pencil when you slow it down in practice. Not so really I did a video on our YouTube channel the other day. It's not really noticeable, but so you definitely see it when you kind of slow down the video, but in practice, and I've been written on my original iPad Pro, which has that technology for a long time. It's its not actually that bad so interesting that at least the Wi-Fi isn't too bad for you to play on exactly I know, and it's its it's not and say I when I used to live on a ranch in every window, know where in Texas- and that was what I would cry people up is I would take me forever to download something, but as far as actual playing you know, I did all right.

I, wouldn't you know I'd, never be eSports caliber living they're in the middle of the ranch but download rates, even though it would sometimes be like five megabytes per second. Was he isn't it or something uh it wasn't, even that it was go. Co Wireless go Lea, County Wireless, which was made by bouncing off of the sprint station. Yes, that's how in the sticks, I was so see I'm trying to look at the camera while play at the same time, and it's kind of not this might be any we're at 61% on the real one. So you've been playing this a little.

How has the lag like if you know like the internet gets choppy or whatever like? Have you liked? What's like? How does a look in the game is, just people are like bouncing around and you like shots, don't register? Well those shots registered. So it's not, but it's you know you especially when you have a little of lag. You know the people will appear to jump or something like that, and you know you move, and so it makes it target a little harder if someone's trying to shoot you, and you're lagging you know it's. You know a little of hacks there, because it's harder to get a pinpoint on you, but it's you know not as much of a problem. It's you know just running around and stuff, but when you're actually trying to go for those really precision shots, I could see that, but yeah, it's uh, it's not about we're at we're going faster.

Now we're at 79 percent, okay and but you know this is this: is here being an older game? This is. This is thumped, it's a rhythm game, but you know this. This is when you people talk about iPad games, iOS games. This is usually the kind of stuff they think about where it's very you know the runs about the same of both games, and this gives you an idea, you're still getting a pretty good experience on both games, but I was expecting because this game really starts getting a lot more intense, and I was expecting a lot more yeah, but it's like a little sleepy game. Yes, exactly so, and give you an idea, this is the old one, so you know for simple games like this.

You don't have that much of a problem and like a safe. It's still running here, here's the ears hearthstone and which crashed interestingly enough, so they but there 's's, there's something to consider. Yes, it's actually crashing okay. So there's one reason why you probably don't want to play on the old one yeah. So it's crushing it's not even that old.

That's kind of I just think it's exactly so. I did have a lot of this stuff running in the background, but that actually shouldn't be affecting it. That much so, but let's say you got 98 99 percent. So what we're going to do now is we're going to switch back over to fortnight's, let's get a new one. So, finally, here we go, so now we will see a new iPad and if you hopefully remember what the pixels looked like, you can do your own compare.

So you can jump around that. What's this video, close and okay, so let's jump into fortnight, which cameras back over got to start I'm, not getting any salad, so I, don't think. We've started yeah we're still loading which is kind of worrying name, because this is supposed to be downloaded again. I mean you know it's like the server stuff that you're downloading, so there we go so already in this. You know you can see a little less pixel pix elation, and you know if you look at the character and you know, because I assume, when you whatever screen you're looking on unless you're looking on a phone, you can actually see this probably better than I am because I'm just working on this 9-inch screen here.

But so why? Don't you give me a rating of like the visual quality of the old iPad, the new iPad, your iPad Pro and well, throw in desktop fortnight in their Oh desk desktop you know, yeah, that's a that's! That's a 10 I would say that this new one is probably about it. If we're gonna, consider the pro as one, and I actually haven't had a chance to do it and approach someone else and the company has to pro, and he's not here right now, so the more modern pro, so I would probably put that as a nine. This is an eight and the old iPad. Maybe a six yeah. Okay! Well, that had your old, your old iPad Pro I would say that it would probably be comparable to what we're looking at here so yeah, it's a very similar experience than what we're looking at with this one.

So this is a new one. So now look at that we got shadows, see the shadows, we didn't have shadows and the other one got a little of texture to the ground. There's not all that pix elation that you were taught that I was talking about and look at that yours actually texture to the trees, and it's you got. You know when I was looking at some other. We don't have a sound, so I want you plug sound there.

We go all right there, we go so but yeah. This is. This is a massive improvement and look at that the shadows, the way the light is playing up for the body. It's its just an amazing difference and I. Don't think people look at that the detail just up from the map.

I remember it was a lot different, and you got the clouds over here in the southwest. This is about a seventy-five dollar difference, right, yeah and the thing is you're getting basically for the same price now that it's being sold at that same price, so yeah. So if you have the choice, you know, especially even if it's on sale, I, think I would go for this model so because you will start seeing the differences and stuff and not just it, would you know regular things, but you'll also start seeing it in games, and you know if you have more, especially if an artist or something like that you're getting a good tablet that can use an Apple Pencil for you know: $$3292.99, if your students and so you're definitely going to want that for apps like procreate, which you know, allows you to draw and paint, and so that would give you a little more. You know you think you have any advantage within the game by having better graphics. No, in this case, I honestly think it just looks.

Prettier or joint enjoyment may be exactly because I saw that I was you know. I was running around fine. I, wasn't really paying attention to the game that much, but it was yeah. It's its nicer and see like the light on the para glider. That's pretty amazing so, and no real lag yet and you know, you probably saw that you know people were bouncing off the screen or the other one, and both of these only have a two gigabyte memory for ya.

So that's another thing to keep in mind to you only what yeah the pros have four gigabytes, whereas you're only working with two here. So that's another thing, but that's this new processor, which comes the ATM processor fusion, which it speeds us up considerably, so I think we're seeing oops I wonder how accurate the hatboxes are in this. Well, we're probably gonna, but it's yeah this you know I wish we were able to do a side-by-side, and it was funny they wouldn't. You know allow me to log in to my account to place at one time, but it was but yeah I did actually take some photos at the same exact spot before we came on the show today, and I'll be posting. Those on my review, which should go, live tomorrow of the whole iPad so because I believe this is a very important thing to consider when you're, you're, you're, upgrading and all right, let's, lets when we switch to pub G, let's switch to pub G all right.

So, let's jump in here so here's pop G, and so this is the other Battle Royale game. So it's in my personal time, I actually prefer to play. G we've talked about this before you feel the same for the mobile version, though I actually like to get on the PC and play it yeah. If you are only if you, if you do not have a PC right, and you just had you know these two mobile versions, what would you prefer I think it's got like? We were saying the last show I think that fortnight probably makes a better mobile experience, because you know you are basically paying playing full-on pub G here. So you know one of the reasons why people like fortnight to begin with, if it has quicker matches and stuff you have the building stuff thrown into there.

But it's a lot quicker you'll. You know you'll run into people really quickly. We have a special guest on the show Timmy Jimmy in Rochester b. o. b ox, says.

Speaking of the pencil, are there any games that use it kind of like a pointer, I, think it'd be interesting for old-school RPGs. Look at that I'm actually controlling it with so that's you know yeah if, basically on an iPad which you can use your pen, your finger for you can use the pencil with, so I'm. Actually controlling this with the Apple Pencil right now. So here's an idea and a game that's actually made for it and I have to admit I, don't know that, so I don't know if people still play where's that draw you all go with friends all for friends, oh that game. I! Do but, but keep this in mind, I think this is one of the areas where you're going to be seeing a lot of difference between the two.

That's very visible, because look at this already, you know we're at the highest point. You can go in the game when you're on the plane. You can actually see quite a bit of detail here. Furthermore, you see a little of the clouds wafting through the yeah. What should we specifically pay attention to? What so that we can compare and so pay attention to the actual detail of the earth of below us and so yeah? You can already see a lot of landform features and stuff.

So keep that in mind. You know I would also say like details on the characters and stuff in the buildings, but especially this. This is where you're, especially going to see I think one of the biggest differences. So keep that in mind. So let's go ahead and jump here.

I'll try to make this quick and jump work for cheeky all right, I've seen some clouds that kind of waft through yes, and we are on the new iPad here, the new iPad and okay. So in this case, keep in mind these fields right here that it gives you an idea. We had a just little bit of lag there, but I have a feeling that was part of a leotard connection which is wonderful here down there, and now we're having a little. You know it's going to come into greater detail in a second, but this is one of these things where I'm not really sure. If that's you know the connection or the game, loading, so I feel like that's, probably the game loading right, because that's not server-side so yeah.

So look at this okay. Look at the detail on the grass here. Okay, see no one lands, but they're like let's specially look here see you see the detail on the grass here, and you do have a shadow, so you are not a ghost or a witch or a vampire. So the nice thing is on this game. I know for a fact: you can actually change the settings, so it'd be interesting to go ahead and pump those to the max.

We actually are at max settings in this game and that's like it detects it and that's what it recommended. Yes, when it jumps it when you, when you join the game, it gives you know it says this is your recommended settings on the older iPad above same medium on this one, it says hi, so, okay and highest is the best. Yes, hi is the best, no OCHA, no there's no older, yes, and not even on a pro, because I have played it on the pro so, and I'm not being very stealthy here. I'm just find somebody. Yes all right! All right, let's see some, you know your kind of walk the grass and for comparison.

I will try to drop in for chinky when we do it on the older iPad, but okay, so look. Here, like the details in the buildings, you know crack the cracks and stuff. That's something to keep in mind that the shadows got the detail under bricks and that's right. I join into a squad, so I wonder if they're hearing me talk all this stuff I think it turned off. They're going to hate you when you leave yeah, because I'm not actually here, let's find somebody exactly but yeah I'd like to, but you have something other than a pistol, but okay get some nice pants over there, but yeah, and so there's this.

You know what we are already seeing people in fortnight. That gives you an idea. It's a fat faster place game. So that's one reason why a lot of people like it more is not I. Guess it's gonna, be a pistol.

I'll hear something: okay, I got an extra okay. Just that is basically a high-powered shotgun, but we will. We will work with it. I just want to see you fight somebody I do too yeah, so you do not have a choice to be in a non squad game is that it no I just because we were talking I didn't really pay attention to what I was doing. I just hit I just said, join sorry, guys, I think my mic is off.

It is off I, said over here, I was gonna, say but yeah. So what the shit man so little do. They know that they would be guess right. Well, there doesn't seem like they're doing too well, they're all getting shot. They found the action, so there's that, and I haven't seen a car or something so, but you, as you can see very legs all right.

Well, let's check it out on the other one now, alright, and let's do that they seem like they have not had a very good time. So let's do that goodbye, suckers goodbye suckers switching over, and we are going to the old iPad, which is last year 27 times. Civilization and I am ready. Alright, switching back over, and you're prying up having to unplug and plug that headphone seems like after we just had to do it after it. Loads make sense.

So now here is pub G on the old dirt. iPad is in last year's model. One year difference, yes, and you know that was the thing. A lot of people were saying it was basically yeah. It's got a faster processor, his pencil support but cancel see, but there are actually some deeper just differences when you actually start getting into technical stuff like games.

So once again, so what we're gonna look for is we're gonna, look in the details and like the grass, the flowers, especially the view from the plane when you're about to drop I, think those are some pretty significant ones. I did take some photos up here of the area prison Island here, and you know like, for instance, there was a little more detail, see how it's just yet. You know yeah like that. You would still be seeing the edges of the box and in the one that was on high settings, and so that gives you an idea and even though we're on medium I do sense a little of lag here. So yours, you are an idea, so there's a lot less detail, because you know we're working on medium here and like I, knew no God did take photos for the review of this plane and significant difference over here, and you see a process a lot more yes and note.

No shadows. Shadows are gone man, yes, so that gives you an idea. That's a pretty big difference. Yes, it is, and so this is what we're working with optimal, and we're on we're in a squad again, just because I jumped in and sorry guys, but I will probably jump with them. This time, don't hear anything, so I want you just plug it.

Unlike the headphone area, let's see what they wanted. You almost have to drop in the pinky again just so we have a good jump wherever you want right, but that was that way we would be able to see the Townies yeah. So who cares where they drop? Yes? So what we're doing looking at we're looking up here, and it's yeah, you can see, there's not as much detail. You could actually see like individual forests and little clumps of. Can they hear you right now? I know you look up near the mini-map, and you can see that the microphone, and it'd be funnier.

If they could hear ya would be funny. Mr. Vader man welcome to the show guys, you don't know it the area you're on it. So well, you took me wherever you want right. I am so long suckers.

Well the nice thing. The nice thing is, you know they got into battle right afterwards, yeah, you know where somebody's going. No, you have to go back to the scene, spy right, let's be like dude. What are you doing then, so that guy's going the same place you all right, so it's going to be okay, but yeah. Look at this! Look, how much longer it's taking for everything to load in here, so I use them Wow, yeah, difference! Definitely softer graphics, see! If we can do this.

Okay, so graphics, let's pump it up too high, and so, if we do want to see it at what it theoretically could be played out- and it doesn't want to that gives you an idea- it doesn't want to on the old iPad so yeah- oh, that's some serious lag there so and on the ground. It doesn't look too bad, definitely not as much detail here, but is you can see it trying to load? But this is me playing on high, and this is the high setting yes I'm, feeling a little lag, so you're, seeing you know, you're seeing it I was feeling it'll be a little different when we get into you know if there's actually some more people around. So let me drive here, get a weapon but yeah, and you saw the frame rate shutter just a little there as I tried to open it so but yeah definitely going down. That was a difference. Yeah.

If you have an older iPad, do you think you're better off playing at a lower this medium semi? Or would you rather just say, like it's a little more stutter, but the benefit is putting on too high if you're wanting it, like, you know, as close as you can get to 60 FPS, which I don't know if you're going to be getting on. This is yeah. You would be wondering playing it on lower settings and stuff, but you know, while this looks a little nicer, let's see what now that I'm running you can see it shuttering a little. You know it's not as good as it can be, and you know if I were actually in a battle. That would be a bit of a problem, but so yeah, that's one nice thing about pop G, as you actually can jack up the graphics.

If you want to where, as you know fortnight to my knowledge, it's not it's not as or at least it's not as easy to change but kill you. You think someday well, I notice how I can, I feel like when I watch people like for night. It's like you, don't kill you, don't finish people off you! Let them you just let them like. Unless you kill off the whole team, yes, you don't kill everyone. If they're crawling around right what I mean bad manners, I guess and for tonight I make sure those, because you know that gives the excuse me in pub key, because that gives the other team members a chance to get the person back up.

Yeah. That's the whole point yeah, but it's like this way. Yeah, hey! We know what kind of player your life is all right. So that was any final impressions on pub G differences and I, like you know that I think that you can actually tweak two settings. You know right there, and I know, and I like that.

So at the very least, it's a lot easier to figure out how to do it, but it tells you right for yeah, but you that you're supposed you know to play it on what's recommended and stuff. So it gives you an idea at the beginning, but as far as the actual differences between them, when you're on the ground, you know I think it does a good job of mimicking it, whereas I honestly, frankly, I thought for tonight, look horrible I mean when I, post screenshots and because I was showing it to my senior editor. You'll, you'll see the difference when I post them in the review it's a little harder, because here you were trying to basically trying to remember it, but when you're on, when you look at them side by side screens, it's its crazy difference. So I think that's something you know for tonight, especially and since, if you're a lot of people, if you're going to be playing a game on an iPad right now, it's probably going to be fortnight. I think that's definitely something to consider fortnight from what I can tell definitely runs a lot better on the new one.

So alright, so let's see six alright, because that's going to be a CPU intensive one right. Yes, no there 's is no in fortnight. There is no way you know, high low, medium and stuff like that. No there isn't, and I'm pretty sure that this is you can do. Turn aim assist on.

You can turn vibration on that type of stuff, but there are no graphics settings. So that's I think that's a big major difference all right. Let's see civics, alright, so six, and so let's jump in and here's a six. Is this the new iPad or the new iPad? Okay? Sure- and you say you know what I'm not this is the old one? Yes, and so yes, that's the thing we were finding. So, let's just jump in then, while we're here.

This is the old one. Give you an idea, and it's just resumed game. It's like a similar save point is that it no I was trying I thought they'd do it. Sync was the ones that I did my iPad Pro, but they don't I mean it's my same account and stuff. No cloud saves on this game yeah or if it was I can, I mean you know, because I had just downloaded this.

It was so it wasn't. You know restoring the actually. The real purchase was fine, because you know you can download a free version of civil six, but when I restored, you know saying that I had bought it before it was a big difference, but so yeah, if you zoom in here, let's see let's return the game and the other nice thing. You know if your kids wanting to do this and stuff. So let's say here: let's say that you want to work on something.

You know you could just pull up something. It works a lot better on the newer one, but so yeah. So here is let's just save time here, build a city, and then we take our Scouts here, and so this is what I mean. Okay. So let's use the pencil yeah what should also should be Beatles you noticing specifically- and a lot of you said when I was trying to do in here.

I was trying to look into the details so like here I'm playing some area, you have the ziggurats and stuff- and you know I was thinking the Pens look pretty pig. They actually look pretty pixelated on the pro two, but it's about the same on the new iPad, so graphically it's similar, it's very similar, and I was surprised, and you know one thing I wish I had done has had a save where it was much further in a game. So you know because that's one sieve six, especially on the iPad, so yeah really slowing down, is when you're very far into the game, but you know I'm trying to do this other review at the same time. That takes a couple of hours to come in. To do I'd be curious.

Yeah, if you just like yeah so see. That's another thing about this as I accidentally messed up here, but see that was me using my finger. Here's using the can't describe I can't use the pencil in this one I keep forgetting them. I don't want, but yes, you drag over here and there, and so let's get her Scouts out here and yeah it's. You know the nice IF six was nice because it took this game that everybody thought was, you know, could only ever be PC and they and aspire actually made a very amazing port out of it from the original and how much since six really well, because it is a full game.

The only thing that it's an it's only like really missing one of the lenses here they sell it for the full sixty. So it if you own it on it's, not this. If you own PC you'd have to buy it twice, I'd say that's a little messed up. Well, considering that it would see, the thing is aspired makes it separately from Fir axis. It was the main developer.

So basically, when aspire makes a port they're remaking the game for something like I've had so kept that in mind. This isn't, like you know, ported they basically remade the whole game for iPad, and so you know, the other thing is aside from you know: downloading civilizations and stuff like that you're getting that you're getting CIV 6 we're on the iPad. It's pretty amazing! There are certain things you got the gigantic battery indicator up in the corner here, but overall it's its pretty cool and- and this is the old one anything else we should know to keep an eye out for no I'm, mainly looking for details, speed of stuff- and you know later on- and that would be the real cool thing to see. It's like turn speed yeah like how many processes that it's running through and how quickly it takes. So that gives you an idea: let's switch the new one yeah, and so now we're on that will be on the new iPad civics, and this is uh.

This is this year's the one that was released just a couple of days ago, and then you'll probably have to unplug the sound once we get into our main screen somewhere. But yes, so far, I have you know believe it or not. For tonight is the only game. I've been really not impressed with its performance on the older one, and you know the other one. It's its pretty.

You know it's give or take and stuff like I think pub. She actually does a fairly. You know comfortable transition between both games but 49 to me, it looks awful on the old one. So it's funny it's the hit game right now and that's the worst one I've seen so gives you an idea and also another thing. I'd downloaded on here and I and I talked about that in the announcement post.

Are you know there are a couple of air games in here, and you know Apple was talking about how it had really made the experience a lot better of playing with augmented reality, games and stuff experiences with this new iPad, but I kept looking for something that really stood out, and I mean they all kind of ran smoothly on both of them. So there's one case of which they're actually very similar you've, despite some advances in technology with an Out so but yeah, it gives you an idea. So you know you can move. Fine pix elation looks about the same yeah better, so you know that's. You know, that's what a lot of people consider.

It was there's a super graphically intensive game, but of course, look at the space that I'm working with here. Like I said, I really wish I had one of my iPad Pro says here, which was this all over the map. I, guess the pen isn't worthwhile in a game like this, because you have to do so much pinching. Yes, that's a good point yeah, and it depends on the hour but see you know like here. I'm trying to use my scalp see I had a can't okay.

So this is me trying to move my scalp with the pencil. It feels a lot I just managed to do it, but it feels a lot more difficult to do it. So, let's move my soldiers out here, and I feel like I have to really you know, push down in order to get it to work, so I, don't think it seems like it would be a good idea, but it's its not really worth the effort and yeah. This seems like it would be for this type of game. It sounds like it would be nice.

Do you think if you had one of the know like a, guess a stylist? You know something like not that's not a pencil but I. Like you know like it, no I think this is basically as good as yeah and I. In theory, the precision should help this yeah. It's something about the holding it down and I. Don't that I don't like and I, don't think that's going to change with like a regular fat fingers yeah and the game I guess is designed for the finger.

Yes, so it's not like you need that pinpoint accuracy that you might get uh-huh so, but maybe a drawing competition would be worthwhile I wonder if, like a tapping game, might you know make the touch so here's one thing. So if your ear, you know trying to play stuff in class, you know you can actually write stuff on here. So you can send a yes exactly, so you can be working on your stuff and one. It's not true split screen, because the games don't support it, but you know that's the way it works here is I, have I am writer here open and so give you an idea of the way the pencils support to, so I. Have you know this complex game running in here, so I'm going to open up notability here? If you're kidding in school, you can pass notes.

Yes and yeah. I got my ninja turtle, drawing that I did there the other day so, so yeah. It gives you an idea. So we have the game running, and it's still running pretty well with the pencil and so yeah. That's what so you look at there.

I switch back in there, so yeah I think that's impressive, that it makes that seamless of a transition. My name is easier to write. Yeah. Thank you. So give me some final thoughts on all this.

Well I'm a schmuck. What I'm looking at right now, I'm especially impressed by, but the fact that this is powerful enough to keep these two things running at once and as you can see, a lot of people were asking us how, with the know the latency and the lag is for the Apple Pencil. Well, look at this I got six running in the background and that's the way the pencil writes. I mean that's pretty impressive for a $329 iPad and a lot of you know right now as far as a tablet. This is the best thing you can get on a market right now there are cheaper like the Amazon fire and stuff like that, but there's just basically you know Kindle devices and stuff like that.

It looks simple. This is amazing that you know you're able to do this while running sip sticks. In the background there was a takeaway that if you are interested on gaming or iOS gaming mm-hmm, you don't need to get an iPad Pro like this. This new generation of iPad is perfectly adequate and give you an idea, as that was one of the warnings when people went aspire, release of Civilization six port. You know, as people were saying, I can't run it on this older, iPad or stuff, and it crashes and stuff but yeah.

It's its running fine. This is not a pro, and it's running fine, and this is one of the most demanding games out there right now. Now, as again, the caveat is that I'm not pushing it to its limits, because I don't have a full game in here, but I mean a late-stage game, but you know I'm I'm running another program. Alongside of it, you know it looks beautiful, there's actually not that much difference between the two, and so you know if you're, just looking for it for work, you're looking for it for games and stuff like that, no I don't really see that there's much of a need to go out and get a know a pro which I believe starts on the $600 range and mine because it has cell phone functionality, and I was a twelve point. Nine inch cost about $1,000.

So honestly, if I were to get my own tablet, these days and I still end up getting only one of these you know, I would get this, and I think that's very impressive when Apple parts apples, part and this process or this new processor makes a heck of a difference. Well, I think you were like if you were seeing that like because the iPad Pro also has a larger screen. Yes, it's having to do more processing for more pixels right. Yes, so that's part of it! Yes, so I'd like you know, it's questionable how much even better it would be because I mean yes, sir gain more resolution, a larger screen, so that would be the only reason to probably get the iPad Pro right, right, and you know the the processor you know, and the older one can actually help. You can't handle that better than my first generation, one yeah, but at the same time it is still true.

It's doing it and because it's like I, know multiple people that, like fortnight and pop G mobile, you know they're made to be played on the phones. When you play on the iPad, you know what they do seem to be trying to adjust to it. So it's definitely made for those phone screens and stuff, but, as we saw in our last show, I actually prefer playing on the iPad more because your hands aren't constantly getting in the way of the viewing screen. So when you're working on a phone, you know, that's that's all the room here. Your hands are taking up most of the room and especially with no controller support.

So it's you know, that's one thing to consider in mine too, but this nine point seven inches I know it's. You know. Apple is very proud of it because they consider you know they're their most popular iPad, and it is to me, like a perfect size, the mini I know: people want an update to the mini in stuff. I think it's too small, the know as far as general Thoth ability, the twelve point. Nine inches is huge, but this is perfect.

I love, this I toss it in my bag. I close it, and you know I barely even know it's there, and you know it's like there's, basically, no difference for you know when I put my MacBook Pro in there, that's what I'm feeling, but I take it out, and I don't really feel any difference in my bag, because you know as long as I leave that in there. So that's that's pretty amazing now mind you I, just you know, have the regular cover on here. Don't have keyboard and all that kind of stuff, but you know using it just as a tablet and I think that's the white apples trying to sell it because you know they were they only kind of brought up the Logitech crayon, and you know the Logitech rugged keyboard. You know that for students, which is by the way I don't even ever see nothing, it's a beast.

It's you know it takes it from a slim. Beautiful object, there's big old block and stuff. So that's another thing you got to keep in mind, but you know it's supposed to protect it and boy. It protects it, but almost it's almost overkill but yeah. So everything else.

So you got, you got the good graphics performance. You got the fast processor, you know just the thing. Just looking around I haven't seen any lag on this, and you know you were definitely singing on the other one. It was it enough to bother my actual gaming experience and not really. The thing is I'm, not one of those people that says bothered by that, but some people are, but this is impressive.

This is really impressive and I. Think they've really done a good thing here, and I think that you know people say that that's really the only difference, but it's a very substantial difference if you haven't upgraded to a tablet in a while or heck if you haven't got a tablet ever you know. This is a good time to do it, because this is a perfect price, and it's its a fun experience. It's fun experience to read on to ride out to work on an to game on so, but that's it. So if you were wondering about you know if the is it was worth to upgrade I, think what we've shown today is that it actually is really.

You know it's worth it. I would not spend the less money getting this iPad for like $250 or whatever they're selling it for I know. Some people are even getting up down to like 210 on eBay, but yeah I would get this one. The new one 20:18 9.7 and I've had, so thanks for being here this week and last weekend we last week we were actually doing getting this and covering this iPad and everything.
