Galaxy S21 vs. S20 FE: Worth buying in 2021?

The galaxy s21 and the s20 Fe both are intended to be more affordable than previous Samsung flagships, but with a price gap of several hundred dollars between them, is it worth stumping up the extra cash for the s21, or is the s20 Fe a better buy in early 2021? Let's take a look at both and see how they compare take a sec to subscribe, and we'll jump right in first up. The s20 Fe is definitely the larger of these two phones there's slightly more bezel to be found around its display as well, and the design isn't quite as elegant as that of the s21, while both phones feature a metal frame and matte plastic back panel. There are plenty of other design differences, for example, with the Fe. You don't get this new style camera module that fits seamlessly into the outer frame of the phone. The galaxy s21, on the other hand, is more hand and pocket friendly with a smaller 6.2 inch display, also flat, and a much improved screen to body ratio. The biggest advantage the s21 has over the s20 Fe, though, is its internal hardware.

Not only are you stepping up a generation in terms of processor going from a snapdragon 865 to an 888 in the US, but you also benefit from more ram a full eight gigabytes in the s21 versus just six in the s20 Fe, and that's something that may affect the longevity of the phone. If you do a lot of multitasking really, eight gigs is just table stakes for a modern android phone and then there's the fingerprint scanner situation. Last year's s20 Fe uses the older, slower and less reliable first generation ultrasonic fingerprint scanner, whereas the s21 series uses the far superior second gen sensor, which, in addition to being bigger, is just better in every measurable way. On the other hand, the s20 Fe comes with removable storage, which you won't find on the more up-to-date s21, and that means you can use a SD card to expand your photo or media storage, whereas on the latest Samsung flagships, you're stuck with the internal storage of the phone alone, plus if you're in the US, the s20 Fe, is available with millimeter wave 5g support and that's not something you'll currently find in the base model. Galaxy s21 not a huge deal for most people, but it means you are limited to sub 6 gigahertz 5g on at t and Verizon, which isn't quite as fast as millimeter wave battery life is another major win for the s20 Fe.

In our testing we found the Fe routinely had more juice left in the tank at the end of a typical day compared to the galaxy s21 and that perhaps shouldn't be too surprising, given the gulf and battery capacity between these two phones, 4 500 William hours versus just 4 000, and given the fact that they're, both using fast, responsive 120hz displays which do use more power. So if battery life is a major concern, then perhaps you'd be better off with the Fe in terms of camera performance. Both phones are similarly spec'd with 12 megapixel wide and ultra-wide cameras in the Fe that compare closely to what you'll find in the s21. The biggest difference is the three times telephoto, which in the s21, gives you much more wiggle room to zoom in further thanks to its 64 megapixel resolution versus just 8 megapixels in the s20 Fe, whether that's a game changer, for you depends on how you use your phone, but if you're shooting far away scenery or you just want more fidelity and things like portrait shots, the s21 might be the better buy. Otherwise, the other cameras perform pretty comparably between these two phones, but there's also a difference in terms of software features and post-processing.

The s21 benefits from being a generation ahead in terms of its processor, allowing for better photo processing and the faster chip and improved sensors. Also, let the s21 boast 8k video recording, which is something you won't find in the Fe 8k video on a phone is still kind of a gimmick for a lot of people, but if you are looking for the very best video quality, that's unfortunately out of reach in the cheaper phone- and the same goes for some next-gen video features from the s21 like the director mode, which lets you view all three cameras at once, while recording so unquestionably, the galaxy s21 is the more technically advanced phone, but the Fe might actually be the better all-rounder for most people, especially when you consider the gulf in price between these two devices there's a reason. We chose the galaxy s20 Fe as our best android phone of 2020 and at least for the time being, the base model s21 doesn't do much to dislodge it from the top spot. Unless you really care about the latest, specs, or you're tempted by the one or two extra camera features, you can save a lot of money and still get a great phone with the galaxy s20 Fe. So what do you think is the galaxy s21 worth the extra cash over the s20 Fe share your thoughts down in the comments and subscribe for more s21 coverage coming soon, thanks for watching, and I'll see you next time, you.
