First 8 Things To Do W/ Your NEW iPhone 12 & iPhone 12 Pro!

Welcome everyone to apple insider. It is Andrew here and say you just got your brand new iPhone 12 your iPhone 12 Pro heck, even your iPhone 12 mini or iPhone 12 Pro max. If those are out by the time that you're watching this video in this video we're going to walk through the top six or seven things that you should do. First, when you get those new phones, so let's dive into it first, six or so things that you should do first, when you get your new iPhone, 12 or 12 pro. The first thing on our list should probably be a given, but it is always good to remember before you even set these things up. You need to make sure you have got a good backup of your existing device.

It makes the migration and everything else so much easier to do now. There are a few different ways. Of course, you can back up your old device whatever it is that you're using so if you're, using iTunes connecting to your computer or using finder on new versions of mac plug it in make sure it's connected and backed up through finder or through on iTunes, or you can of course do it through iCloud. If you prefer to go that route. So if you are using iCloud, go into the settings app on your phone click on your Apple ID right there at the top go to iCloud below that and then scroll down until you see iCloud backup, it'll tell you that it is toggled on if you're, using it, and it'll, tell you the last time that your phone was backed up it'll, say in my case yesterday, at 4 52 p.

m. But if I'm about to set these things up, I might want some messages or anything else that I've taken since then or changed on my phone since then that I still want to be backed up. So I can go ahead and tap back up now to back up my phone right now before setting up my new iPhone 12 device. The second thing to do with your new devices is set up face ID now, as you were, setting these up and kind of doing the onboarding process apple and the phone are already going to tell you to set up face ID it's just a given. It's basically the most secure way of protecting your phone alongside that passcode.

Now it does get a little more complicated these days, because we have to wear masks a lot of the time and, in those cases, it'll actually detect that you're wearing a mask and prompt you for your passcode. So you still have to enter your passcode if you're wearing a mask on, because it can't see your full face, but when you are not wearing a mask you're home you're at the office anywhere where you're not wearing a mask face. I'd is still just an amazing way to quickly authenticate yourself and unlock your device so be sure to set that up. Now. If you do have issues with face ID, it doesn't work 100 of the time, for you try setting up an alternate appearance.

It's basically re-enrolling your face a second time as a second person or an alternate appearance, maybe wearing glasses, and sometimes it has real issues with that or different hairstyles, just really hates for some reason set up that alternate appearance, and that should give you a better chance of unlocking your phone straight away using face ID. Another thing that you may want to do with your new iPhone 12 is disabled or change 5g. Now, if you're, not in an area that has 5g, or you're just kind of like on the edge of something, and you don't really want to be getting 5g all the time, there's no need for it or you're, getting slower speeds with 5g versus LTE, because the 5g network is too congested turn it off. You don't have to use 5g, and you can turn it on at any time. In the future I mean when servers or coverage gets better, so to do that again.

Go into the settings app on your phone head to cellular data options, voice and data and just tap on LTE. So you can turn off 5g. If you do not want to use it, you can also change how much data you are using with a 5g. So when you go into that 5g setting, there are three different options on how much data you want to use below average or normal standard or low data mode. So you have a few different options to choose when you use 5g, so choose how much data you want to put on 5g versus LTE or just turn 5g off altogether.

The next thing that you're going to want to do with your new device is customized the heck out of it. Now there are a bunch of different ways to do that, but my favorite way- and I know a lot of people's favorite way- is to customize the new iOS 14 home screens. So iOS 14 has a bunch of new features. You can add these new widgets in multiple sizes, from your own first party, apps from apple or third-party apps, from apps you've downloaded from the app store. There are a ton of options.

There are zero security concerns. Despite what you may have heard online. They are not stealing your data in any way or slowing down your phone. Anything like that. So there are a ton of different widgets you can put on there, and you can choose your home screens.

You can have multiple home screens or just one home screen and then send everything else to the new app library, which is a very easy way to search through all your apps. Everything is broken down by category automatically. You can search it'll have a bunch presented to you, maybe ones that it thinks you're going to want to use or once you've recently installed just a lot of options there with app library so get in there customize your phone change, that wallpaper add some cool widgets to your home screen, depending on what you want to do, just really go out and customize your phone. I know that's the first thing that I do whenever I set up a new device. So you probably already know this there's been a lot of headlines about it, but of course the new devices don't come with any headphones or power adapters in the box, which makes this next thing that you should do is get yourself a great charger and a great set of headphones.

So those are two things you really should do, and you almost need to do, because when you get these new phones, if you don't have an USB charger lying around you're, not gonna, be able to charge your device. Maybe you have a wireless charger around uh, anything like that or an old lightning cable that worked with a brick that you had in the past that'll work, but for best results, you're gonna to either use mac safe, you're, going to want to use an USB charger with the USB. The lightning cable included in the box apple, of course, has its own options for chargers. So you can pick up apple's own USB power bricks, there's also a bunch of third-party ones. Out there we love the anger power port.

NATO 3, I believe, is what it's called. It's super tiny, but the same size as apple's 5 watt charger, but it can put out like 20 watts of power. That is a great option for you. If you're looking for a charger and, of course, headphones now with headphones, you pretty much have one big option that you can go with. That is just a set of AirPods, AirPods or AirPods Pro.

These are going to be your best solution to go with your new iPhone. Of course, Apple makes them and there's a bunch of great integrations that AirPods and AirPods Pro can do that third-party headphones can't, but at the same time there are a lot of third-party headphones out there, that we love the new Bose quiet comfort or ANC headphones that compared extremely well to apple's own AirPods Pro. We love the master and dynamic mw7 plus and the mw7 sport. Those are some great high-end options. If you're looking for something more affordable funny enough, it happens to be our sponsor for this video which is endure and their new zen pods vendor is known for some amazing battery and power options out there they're our go-to battery pack that we use all the time, but in this case they have just launched their brand-new set of ANC earbuds for way less than AirPods and AirPods Pro, so they don't have as many integrations as apple's own first party solution does, but for a great set of affordable headphones.

The zen pods are a stellar option. They fit in your ear super comfortably. They have easy to use tapping gestures on the outside to control environmental mode as well as pass-through audio and ANC, and they sound great for the price point. So if you are looking for an affordable set of headphones wireless earbuds to go with your new iPhone, 12 or iPhone, 12 pro definitely check out the vendor zen pods. We've got a link for those down below in the description they are just launching, and we've been using them for a while, and they are a great set of budget headphones.

Something else that you may want to do out of the gate is set up sleep. So sleep is a new feature that comes with iOS 14, and it can be really helpful not only to help you get a better night's rest but help you wind down during the day, not get interrupted in the middle of the night by phone calls or something or notifications. So it's a really cool thing to set up. You can set it up from the health app by going into the health app and then finding the sleep category and there it has a little notification there at the bottom. That says, get started to set up sleep.

So it's going to help. You set a schedule for your phone, so when it's kind of active versus when you don't want to be using it sleep mode which turns on do not disturb mode on your phone's watch face as well as keeping it very dim. So it's not overly bright when you're in the bedroom, and it limits the lock screen to minimize distractions and, of course, there's wind down mode which will help you kind of get ready for bed things you do every night. Maybe you use a shortcut to turn off the lights in the room, or maybe you have a shortcut to turn on a certain playlist of music or turn on a not air purifier, but oil diffuser, or something like that. A lot of different options you can create with shortcuts that can be presented right there on that lock screen of your phone and of course it gets even better if you're using Apple Watch, because your Apple Watch can track sleep at the same time and everything can be synced together.

It's a very nice ecosystem, but whether you're using your Apple Watch to track sleep. Setting up sleep on your phone is a great way to think about that nighttime distraction free, no phone time. So one of my favorite new features of the new devices is Dolby Vision, HDR video. It is clutch, and you'll watch these videos, and they will look outstanding. But there are a couple of things you need to know one.

There could be some minor compatibility issues. HDR video is different from regular video and if you shoot a Dolby Vision, HDR video, and then you go to watch it on something that doesn't support it. It's going to look overly blown out way too bright and just completely off now. Most time your iPhone is going to recognize. So, if you're, using the photos app, or you're using iMovie on your phone, and you go to share a HDR video with someone, it's going to automatically check and see if they can play HDR video on their device and if they can't,, it'll, convert it to SDR video automatically.

So you don't have to even worry about it, but there are going to be times when maybe you're trying to upload it to a third-party app or something like that, and it doesn't get converted and there are compatibility issues. So if you're worried about that at all, you don't care about HDR video toggle, that off so on your new iPhone 12 go into settings, go into camera and then, where it says, record video tap into there and change HDR video toggle to off just turn that off, and you're good, don't have to worry about it. But if you ever do want to record HDR video make sure you remember to turn that back on because seriously it looks incredible. But there are this compatibility issues that you sometimes may have to worry about. Finally, the last thing that I think you should do once you get your new phone, you set everything else up, one more piece of customization and that is control center.

I already have talked to a few people who have migrated from older phones they're, not even on iOS 14, and they have not experienced the amazing, updated control center, so make sure you go in there and customize what control center can do, got even better with iOS 14 and, of course, was even better with iOS 13, where it kind of got really overhauled in general. So if you go into your settings and then go into control center, you have a ton of options in here. Maybe you don't ever use the timer or calculator remove those from your control center, so they're, not in the way make sure you add things like flashlight. Maybe you have an Apple TV. You want to add that Apple TV, remote in here definitely a good option to have.

Of course, I love the wallet being in there really easy to get into your wallet from control center. Maybe you can add your notes. Hearing things, your smart home control is a big one for me. It'll automatically populate with various smart home control devices that you use at certain times a day very handy feature so make sure you get in there and customize control center so that it does exactly what you need it to do so that pretty much covers it. There are our top things that you should do the first things you should do when you get your new iPhone 12, your iPhone 12 Pro iPhone, 12 pro max or iPhone 12 mini any of these things are great things to do.

Let me know if there's anything that you guys do when you set up your new devices for the first time. Let me know over on Twitter at Andrew underscore OSU. You.
