ASUS Zenfone 8 vs 8 Flip - Which Should You Buy?

Ooh, look at you, so small size doesn't matter. Okay, that's not what she said. Well, at least I have a 3.5 millimeter jack. Did you just flip me yeah flip off? What's up guys SAF here on Superman TV, and we've got in the house, the brand new ASUS before 8, as well as the before 8, flip nice and early super soft style, so a thumbs up for your boy would be appreciated. Now ASUS has taken a bit of a different approach this year with the flagship, the one that they're really pushing being the before 8, not the flippy boy. So let's go ahead, get these unboxed, and then we'll also do a detailed, side-by-side comparison.

So you know all the key differences. This video is sponsored by node VPN use the link in the description for a special offer. Now the unboxing experience is pretty much identical for both devices, and the smartphones. You get a sim card tool, some paperwork and a plastic case which is included both also come with an USB type-c to USB type-c cable, and a 30 watt charger, and here they are you'll notice, right away that the before 8 is much more compact compared to the eight flip- and this is something ASUS were very keen on to create a very compact form factor for the eight, which is a lot more comfortable to use with one hand, and not only is it smaller. It's also quite a bit lighter coming in at grams, which is over 60 grams lighter compared to the before 8 flip.

Now we've got gorilla glass 3 on the back of both devices, but we've got a matte finish on the before 8, but we've got a glossy finish on the 8 flip. Both are also available in silver variants. Now, one of the key differences that we have with the builds is the fact that the before 8 does have water and dust resistance. The eight flip, however, does not know that is, of course, because of the flip rotating camera module, which we'll be looking at a little later right. Now, let's move over to the front, so we do have AMOLED displays on both, and we've got relatively small bezels.

Although there is a bit of a chin on both devices, it actually appears to be a little larger on the smaller before 8 compared to the flip, but because the flip is larger overall, it doesn't seem as big here and with the 8 flip. Thanks to that flip up camera module, you actually do not have any interruptions with the display, whereas the before 8 does have the punch out for the front-facing camera. Both devices also have an in-display fingerprint scanner and there are lots of key differences between these two. So, firstly, of course, the size, the before 8 flip, does have a much larger 6.67 inch display versus the 5.9 inch display on the before 8. But the before 8 has a hertz refresh rate compared to the 90, has refresh rate of the before 8 flip.

So they have reserved that high refresh rate for the 8, which is their flagship. It's going to be a little smoother, but it's also going to be a bit more responsive because it has a higher touch sampling rate. The before 8 also has a slightly higher peak brightness compared to the before 8 flip, and we've got gorilla glass vectors on the before 8, compared to gorilla glass 6 on the 8 flips, so that also makes the before 8 display a little more durable. So both displays are very good overall, but with the flip, you do get that larger, uninterrupted display and the before 8 you get. The high refresh rate touch sampling the gorilla glass Vitus, as well as the higher peak brightness.

Now before we move on to the cameras, a quick thanks to our sponsor for this video node VPN. Now you must have heard me talk about node VPN many times before, and that's because I've personally been a customer of node VPN for over three years. Node VPN lets you very easily redirect your traffic to and from over 59 countries, and that allows you to do lots of cool things, one of which is access, movies and TV shows which may not be available in your country and one secret. That a lot of people don't know is that certain streaming services are actually a lot cheaper in other countries compared to your own. So you can easily use node VPN to sign up for a subscription outside your country and save yourself.

A lot of money go to nodevpn. com forward, slash, Superman and use code Superman to get a two-year plan, plus one additional month with a huge discount, and you've got nothing to lose because you have node's 30-day risk-free money-back guarantee right cameras, so we actually have pretty similar cameras on the before 8 and 8 flip with some differences so same but different. Where have I had that before anyway? So the ultra-wide cameras are exactly the same 12 megapixels, using the Sony, mix 363 sensors, and they also have autofocus, which means you can use the ultrawide cameras for macro shots as well. Now the primary cameras are almost the same, so they have the 64 megapixel Sony mix 686 sensors, but we have optical image stabilization on the before 8. We do not have optical image stabilization on the 8 flip, just electronic image stabilization.

Now there seems to be a couple of reasons for this. Firstly, the before 8 being the flagship device. Has the is feature the before 8 flip because of the flip camera module? It must have also been a little more difficult to apply is to that primary camera, but the before 8 flip does have an additional camera, and that is the telephoto camera. This is eight megapixels, and it gives you three times optical zoom, as well as 12 times, digital zoom. This is something that you do not have on the before 8.

Another thing that you don't get on the before 8 is the ability to flip the rear, facing cameras as so and use them all, including the ultrawide and telephoto as selfie cameras. Now this has definitely been one of my favorite features of the before series for the past couple of years, something that's quite unique and nobody else has really been able to replicate just having the ability to have those high quality cameras, including 8k video and 4k, at 120 frames. A second. This is something that you, unfortunately do not have on the before 8 on the before 8 within that punch out, you get a 12 megapixel sensor. This is the Sony mix 663, and this is quite a large sensor, and it's uh the industry first, but it's just not going to be as good as the rear facing cameras with that versatility that you get on the before 8 flip by the way, if you're enjoying the video so far- and you want to see more content like this, then don't forget to subscribe and hit that bell icon.

Only around 40 of you guys watching are subscribed, so the other 60 go on. You know you want to do it right now. Let's take a look around the devices, so at the bottom we do have an USB type-c input. We've got one of the two stereo speakers. We've got one on the earpiece of both devices.

There's also a LED notification light at the bottom of both devices. This is so cool. I've not seen a LED notification light on a recent device in ages. Now the sim card tray is actually the bottom of the before 8, and this has space for two 5g sim cards, but the before 8 flip has the sim card tray on the left-hand side. Now this not only has space for two 5g sim cards, but you've also got a micro SD card slot.

So you can expand the storage on the eight flip. You cannot on the regular eight on the right hand, side we have the volume rocker, as well as the smart key, which is not only going to be used as a power key, but you can customize actions with a press and hold or a tap twice gesture and at the top. The before 8 flip has that flip camera module, but the before 8 doesn't have that, so it gives it some space for a 3.5 millimeter headphone jack. So it's pretty interesting because both devices are trading blows with some advantages going to the before 8 and others going to the eight flip. Now for the batteries being the larger device, the before 8 flip does have a larger 5 000 William hour battery versus 4 000 William hours on the before 8.

On both devices do come with the 30 watt charger included out of the box. However, unfortunately there is no wireless charging on either device and wireless charging really seems to be something. Asus doesn't want to do now. I'm not sure exactly why this is. It seems like they wanted to keep the devices compact.

But to me, that's not really an excuse pretty much. All flagship devices have wireless charging and wireless charging is something that I find super, super convenient, so I'm definitely disappointed that it's not available on either of these devices. For software, we do have zen UI 8, which is built upon android 11, and one thing that I really like about zen UI is the fact that it's very close to stock android with some additional features. So, for example, we've got game genie which is similar to what we see on the ROG devices, giving you lots more controls over your gaming experience as well as some features to improve your battery health over time, such as being able to set a custom charging limit steady charging for the times that you don't need faster charging as well as schedule charging right now internally. Both of these are powered by the Qualcomm snapdragon 888 5g chip set.

So in terms of speed and performance. They are really up there, and we do have LP ddr5 ram with UFS 3.1 storage, and we do have a few different options. So we've got 128 or 256 gigabyte storage options. Remember you can expand the storage on the 8 flip and for ram on the 8. We've got either 6 8 or even up to 16 gigabytes of ram for the 8 flip.

There is just 8 gigabytes of ram right now. What about pricing? Well, the before 8 actually starts at a very competitive 599 euros and in the UK that's around 540 pounds which, for a device with 120 hertz display, as well as the Qualcomm snapdragon 888 chipsets, is definitely quite competitive. I mean we're looking at a lower price compared to a lot of the OnePlus devices out there, as well as the s20 and the s21 Fe that will be coming soon. The before 8 flip will be coming in at 799 euros. Now that is 200 euros more compared to the base before 8.

However, you do have to keep in mind that the before 8 flip at that price will have 256 gigabytes of storage with eight gigabytes of ram. Now, if we do compare the like for light configurations, then the before 8 is around 729 euros, which makes it around 70 euros cheaper compared to the 8 flip right. So what are my thoughts and which one of these should you go for? Well, I think they're, both very promising devices, I'm still leaning towards the before 8 flip. I think that flip up camera feature is really what makes engines unique, but I also understand that ASUS wants to reach the mass market, and they can really do this with something like the before 8, which is coming in at a very competitive price, and if you are interested in picking one of these up, but you're, not sure which one to go for well with the before 8 you're, getting a much more compact device, which is cheaper, has water and dust resistance, a smoother, more responsive display, that's also brighter more durable gorilla, glass Vitus with a 3.5 millimeter headphone jack. However, if you don't mind spending a little more on the before 8 flip, then you're getting the larger, uninterrupted display with a larger battery a micro SD card slot, an additional telephoto camera as well as that super unique flip up camera feature which lets you use those higher quality rear facing cameras as front facing cameras, which one of these would you choose, definitely drop me a comment below.
