2021 iPad Pro (12.9) - Mini LED issues?

All right now, before we get into this, I know you're thinking. Oh, here comes like a LU, unbox therapy kind of dramatic whatever right. But let's talk about this display on the 12.9-inch 2021 iPad Pro, because I'm seeing some news outlets and some other comments on Reddit and stuff about the display, and I've noticed a few things that I really find odd, and I don't know if it's maybe an iOS update or iPadOS update or if it's maybe something else going on. But let's take a look at some of the things that are a little concerning as far as uh. This new mini LED display all right. Let's get into this now, let me table this uh.

Well, let's just be real all right, I'm not like a display, like I don't know all the ins and outs of displays now I know the benefits of LCD and the downsides of LCD. I know the pros of OLED and mingled, and now there's going to be micro. I think OLED and all that stuff- and I understand the people that, like CDs, because black smearing and uneven backlight lighting on OLED and mini led and a lot of that, is still really a concern right and so there's a few things here. One is going to be, and it's going to be hard for me to quantify this. I guess on camera, but they call it blooming.

I believe, is where I guess how the pixels are lit up and how they're designed or whatever it can create a blooming effect where it looks like there are things glowing around pieces like if there's a bright area and a darker area, you can kind of see like a like a haze around it if that makes sense um. But the biggest thing for me is going to be like this. It's not smearing per se like I know a lot of times on these darker panels right and that's why I like dark gray, I know that's kind of a side rant. I like dark gray better because you don't have the craziness of pixels, like on a pure black background. Like if you're browsing, Reddit or reading like it's really hard to not have like a smear, even at a high refresh rate, in fact, it's somewhat exacerbated on a high refresh rate, because you can clearly see these pixels are trying to come on and off as fast as they can, and it gets like all jelly, and I even noticed that I don't know if it's jelly like and this isn't too bad um, let's go into like I don't know.

Maybe here like I do notice, it's not it's not as bad as I've. Seen on other displays, but you'll have like. I know I think it's one half of the display uh refreshes at a different speed. I don't know if it's going to catch that at all, because this really isn't pure black. It's got white in between, but um.

You can kind of see things like shift like that when you scroll quickly, but it's actually not too bad, but I did notice it and part of the reason I'm bringing this up is that people are like hey. Should I get the 12.9 to the 11 inch, and you know at a distance uh the 12.9, with the mini LEDs like a no-brainer, but I'm like man, I don't know and on a side note day-to-day use case right uh? I don't notice a huge difference just using this right now. I know there's HDR content that can crank out some crazy uh high brightness. You know the knits are like 1600 all that stuff's great, but just using like this I'd be hard-pressed to see. If anyone could tell a difference and even looking at this, it's so hard to try to get on camera.

Listen, I don't have the most expensive cameras, but there's like hazing around the apps. Like I don't know if it's I can't really explain it and another thing: that's driving me a little. Bonkers is um when you scroll back and forth like at like the apps right. If you know, it's going to be really hard, maybe I'll, I'll film on the iPhone you can see like there's this smear back and forth, like the refresh rate is great. Maybe it's better.

If I leave this off um, it's perfect I'll, try to get on camera guys but effectively like the apps, and this happens on the LCD models too, but it's not nearly as egregious on this panel, particularly uh, particularly uh. When you go back and forth between pages these apps, like you, see Facebook here, when you swipe back and forth it just you can see like smearing back and forth um, and I don't know if smearing is the right term. That's just again! You guys. Let me know in the comments, if you can tell I can just on camera, and again I don't have something that records 120 fps, except for my iPhone, so maybe I'll put a video in showing if it's not horrible, but again, if you're used to LCD. That might be something that annoys you um.

So there's that kind of the black smearing within the UI. There's like this people say it's blooming, I'm not sure, I'm not sure what the best way to kind of replicate. It is maybe, if I use one of these wallpapers they're kind of busy um, and I'm not hating on the display right like it really is good, but if some of these things would bother you day to day, like even swiping here, like I've, just noticed, there's ac, there's more um, there's more jellying. If that makes sense, you know when you're scrolling around uh. That would I can see it here, I know, might be tough for you guys there um, but the one big thing that, and again I'll try to replicate this uh.

If I turn off, dark mode is a and oh- and you know I need a know, this is actually pretty good the settings app right. So, let's go to just notifications. I noticed that you know if you remember like before they had like the displays that were like fused together almost you would get like a gap right here, and I don't think it's a gap, but I notice around the edges uh. It looks like there's a shadow briefly coming in, and I'll try to capture that, but I don't like that. It looks kind of cheap, I know that sounds insane, and I'm being picky, but I think I should be for the price of this right.

This is a hundred dollars more and if I'll give it credit it's kind of even right, like it's all the way around, but around the edges. Here you have a little of like a like, like a shadow, just all the way around, and so again I don't remember that on the LCD model, I'm trying here to see yeah, it's definitely there. I don't know what that is. Maybe that's just goes with the territory uh, but I wanted to get this video out there because I know people are buying theirs and if you're inside your return window, like I want you guys to be able to to to you, know, do what makes sense for you um. Another thing that's kind of concerning is there is blue shift man.

I know I talked about it. My unboxing there's definitely blue shift. I mean you could turn true tone off, because that makes everything yellow. So it kind of exacerbates the blue shifting potentially uh, but I do notice that, as you move this around you can you do notice it uh, but it's not absolutely terrible, but just giving you guys perspective some context like if you know if you truly find those things annoying then get the 11 inch or get last year's uh. You know 12.9, and you won't have that issue um but you let me know again on the camera, it's going to be kind of hard to get it to pick it up and that's another thing. Um as I look up at the camera here, you know it's.

It has like a certain areas are brighter, but darker, it's weird man, I'm not sure. What's going on here, uh, I don't know if the camera you can see like some for some reason in the middle. In certain instances it looks a little darker, but as you move around it goes away uh, but I would say the most noticeable thing for me is the apps kind of like smearing back and forth, especially on a dark background out. What I haven't done is gone like in low brightness and that's where OLED's kind of issues kind of really come to light. You know when you're trying to view things in a really dim scenario or situation, and you bring the screen brightness down, especially text elements.

Uh, let's see if I can find something here. Um and again I know I'm not the most. You know professional like display, oh file, uh, and I don't know if the camera's going to pick it up, but just, just check it out for yourself man, that's all I have to say check it out for yourself. Listen mini led is great. It's a step in the right direction.

I know we're getting there, but there's definitely some things to consider, especially if you're sensitive to how like animations, move and scroll and how the UI is um other than that I mean I'm enjoying it, but I just those are the things I've noticed. You know it's definitely a great tablet. Uh, but just be warned. I guess when you, when you pick up an iPad with a mini helicopter fingerprints, a mini LED display, there's still those led. I guess characteristics that are getting better, but they're still there, but let me know in the comments below how you feel I know this was kind of quick rant, not really Rambo a quick video, and again I didn't use all the correct terms.

Furthermore, I know blooming's a term ghosting, uh jelly smear all that stuff um. Furthermore, I'm going to try to include some dark uh, some darker environments here to see if you guys, can really see a difference uh. But let me know how you feel below if you picked one up check it out. Maybe I'm wrong, but my eyes are telling me these things so uh well I'll see in the next video peace.
