The LG Velvet Is All About the Little Things

The lg velvet may be the company's best phone in years because of what it offers for 599 bucks which, in terms of price, sits between the TCL 10 pro and motor edge, 5g on the low end and the OnePlus 8 and pixel 4 on the high end. It actually competes most similarly to last year's Galaxy S10e, which is still priced at 599 dollars. What separates itself from all of these devices, though, are all the little things it has a headphone jack that a surprisingly large number of people still use in 2020, including myself from time to time. It has a dual sim card tray with support for a micro SD card slot for expandable storage, which adds to the 128 gigabytes of onboard storage. There's an ip68 water and dust resistance rating that protects itself from being submerged in up to 1.5 meters of water for 30 minutes, or you know, the accidental drop in the toilet when you're dropping a deuce been there done that. There's wireless charging support that even the OnePlus 8 doesn't support.

You actually have to spring for the 899 dollar OnePlus 8 pro. To get this feature, and I would consider these stereo speakers a little thing that makes a big difference: they're loud they're crisp, they have a shocking amount of depth and the sound quality overall is definitely on par with the competition. Now you get support for 5g, thanks to the new mid-tier 765 g chipset from Qualcomm. That's a little thing: that's becoming increasingly more desired, as 5g rolls out to more people, and last but not least, the lg velvet has a dedicated Google Assistant button. That really comes in handy when you're driving, or you just have a quick question that only google can answer now.

There actually is one other thing, and that is the dual screen accessory, but it has a big asterisk. Next to it. With this accessory, you can essentially turn the velvet into a foldable smartphone with two big OLED displays. This will make multitasking a dream come true, and not only is it slimmer and lighter than previous dual screen accessories, but more apps support the wide view mode like google photos, YouTube and Gmail the asterisk is that it costs an extra 199 dollars which, for that price, I can't say that it's worth it, but those are some of the little things that really do help round this phone out and are typically features you'd, find in the company's premium flagship smartphone like the galaxy s20 or even the lg v60. But here you get them for only 590.

With all those features mentioned, the other big pillar features are pretty much in line with lg's previous flagships. Lg is really touting this new design language, but in my opinion, it still largely looks like a lg device which is not a bad thing. It has curved edges, it has a metal frame and reflective glass back. It looks and feels quite premium. They didn't really compromise the display type and resolution, as it's still an OLED panel with a fairly high 1080 by 2460 resolution, and it does stretch from edge to edge with only slight bezels.

However, there is a teardrop notch that not everybody likes, and it's starting to show its age, but it's not really a dealbreaker by any means. You also get three rear-facing camera sensors a wide ultra-wide and depth sensor for those portrait mode photos. It's not going to capture the highest of high quality photos, but performance is competitive for the price and the versatility with three lenses here is really nice to see. Even the battery size is above average, coming in at 4 300 William hours. It should provide for a full day of moderate to heavy usage, especially since it uses the more power efficient, snapdragon, 765g chipset, and that's actually the weakest link funny enough compared to say the OnePlus, 8 or pixel 4.

It's not a flagship processor and the software isn't as optimized as other devices, so performance is going to be noticeably weaker. However, as I mentioned in our unboxing video, I think this was the right trade-off to make keeping all these hardware bells and whistles and features and sacrificing performance and software. It makes sense to me, I think, there's still a big demographic of android users that value a headphone, jack and expandable storage, among other things, and that's who the lg velvet is going to appeal to. You can argue that this same group really loves stock android, which is why OnePlus has taken off in popularity over the years, but uh their OnePlus 8 pro doesn't have anywhere near as many little things that the lg velvet 5g has, and yet it still carries a relatively high price tag. The lg velvet is all about the little things, and they really do add up to make an enjoyable experience.

If you can look past some performance and software shortcomings, which is not going to be easy in some cases, this could be the perfect phone for you, and I'm actually surprised with what the lg velvet offers. Once again, I think that the lg velvet is one of the best phones lg has released in years with that said, on bow HD, I'm curious to hear your thoughts on this device in the comments down below. If you enjoyed it, give it a thumbs up. As always I'll see you guys right back here in the next one, see ya.
