TCL 20 Pro 5G - Review! (New for 2021)

What's going on everyone, this is Kevin here and in this video we're going to be checking out the tcl20 pro 5g. So let's get started now, I'd like to thank TCL for being kind enough for sending this phone out to me to cover here on the channel. Of course, all opinions expressed in this video are completely my own, but I've actually covered quite a few TCL devices. Already, for example, about one year ago, I covered the TCL 10 pro, which is the predecessor to this phone. Now that device is actually still being offered for sale and essentially TCL took that phone and all the things that were good about it, and they took things to the next level here with the TCL 20 pro now, this device features a MSRP of 499. Its available factory unlocked as well now before we get too deep into things here with the phone.

Let's take a closer look and see what all comes included here in the box. So you can see here. Is the box tcl20 pro 5g, we'll open this up and see what all we get? The first thing we have here is this packet, and when you open up the packet, we actually have a clear plastic case. So it's nice. This is included here because it does provide the phone with some protection.

But of course it is a little on the thinner side as well. Now, thankfully, there are plenty of other options out there when it comes to cases for this phone. So this one is really more of a thin temporary case unless you just prefer to have a thin case with your device. So regardless of what you prefer, it is really nice here that it is included here in the box. In addition to that, we also have a safety and precautions, booklet and a quick start guide and then also in that packet is a sim card removal tool and then getting further into the box.

Here we do have an USB cable for charging and data transfer, and then also we do have a TCL branded USB wall adapter, and this is 18 watts. Now the TCL 20 pro 5g is offered in two different colors. You can get it in moon dust gray, which is this color, and it's also offered in marine blue, and I have seen some pictures from some other reviewers of the marine blue color, and that looks like a really fantastic color, as well. Now, with this device we're getting a 6.67 inch display and if you know anything about TCL, then you probably know that the company has a very big presence in the TV industry, and they've actually been pretty big innovators in that space as well, but essentially a few years ago when they started making their own android smartphones. They took their expertise in display technology and incorporated that into their mobile devices, and definitely the tcl20 pro you can tell they've definitely put their experience to use here now the display is AMOLED we're getting a 60 hertz refresh rate we're getting a 1080p resolution, we're getting a PPI of 395 with a 20x9 aspect ratio, so a more narrow but taller form factor here, and we're getting an 89.6 screen to body ratio. Now, I'm definitely a big fan of having a hole punch for the front-facing camera.

In fact, the TCL 10 pro has a notch, so I am really glad to see that they have moved on from the notch to a hole punch, but in that hole, punch is a 32 megapixel front facing camera. Now stay tuned for later on in the video as I'll be showing you a variety of different photo and video samples from the phone. But from my experience this device really can capture great looking images now with the tcl20 pro we're getting 256 gigabytes of internal storage, and we're also getting micros card expansion. So I really do appreciate how much internal storage they're giving us here with the phone, especially as apps, keep getting bigger and bigger, but I think really what makes this especially impressive, that we're getting this much internal storage is that even now in 2021, the base model iPhone 12 is still only 64 gigabytes, so essentially for this device, which is more affordable than the iPhone 12 we're getting four times the amount of internal storage. Now, of course, you always can add the micro SD card in to further expand things, but in my opinion, nothing is better than having.

As much internal storage as possible, another cool bonus with this phone as well is that we do get wireless charging support now. Another awesome surprise with the tcl20 pro is that we are getting wireless charging here with the phone and in addition to that, this device supports 15 watt wireless charging, which is significantly faster than the wireless charging that we're getting with the iPhone. Now I already have a variety of different wireless chargers, but TCL did send over this portable wireless charger in order to demonstrate the wireless charging here with the phone and, as you can see in this test, wireless charging does indeed work. So the phone is charging right now, with this device, we do get an in-display fingerprint sensor, and it is very fast and responsive we'll. Try that out one more time, but again super quick.

Definitely no issues with that and in addition to having an in-display fingerprint sensor, this phone also supports face unlock. So it is really nice that we are getting multiple methods for getting into the phone now. As far as the cameras go on the back of the phone, we do have a quad camera setup, so we're getting a 48 megapixel main camera, a 16 megapixel, ultra-wide angle, camera a 2, megapixel depth, sensing camera and a 2 megapixel macro camera for close-up images. So this phone does support portrait mode for both the rear and front cameras. So this is with the main camera right here then, from here we can tap on this button to zoom in or tap on it again to go to the ultra-wide angle, camera which allows us to fit quite a bit more content into the frame.

We can also go over to the more tab to access a variety of other functions as well, and one of those is super macro. So, with super macro, we can get very close up and retain quite a bit of detail here, which is certainly pretty interesting. We can also go over to portrait mode to get those nice blurred out backgrounds, whether it's for the rear or front cameras. So you can see this is through the front-facing camera right now. We can also do regular photos as well, so it doesn't have to be portrait mode.

We also have a super night mode which is pretty interesting and then finally, there is a dedicated pro mode which gives us even more customizations. Now it certainly has been a fun experience, taking photos and videos with the tcl20 pro for a mid-range device. I'm perfectly happy with the camera quality I feel like it takes very good, looking photos that the majority of people would definitely be satisfied with now. Of course, if you want to get the best photo and video quality out there, then you probably will want to get a flagship device, but again for a mid-ranger like this one, that's quite a bit more affordable, you're, really not getting too many compromises when it comes to the camera quality I'll. Definitely let the quality speak for itself, as you can see it right here in the video, but essentially I was able to take some perfect, looking pictures, so I'm totally happy with it.

But let's now take a look at some video samples from the phone what's going on everyone. This is Kevin here. Coming at you with a 4k front facing test video from the TCL 20 pro 5g, so let me know what you think of both the video and audio quality, and here is a 4k test, video using the main rear camera on the TCL 20 pro 5g nice, quick autofocus in video mode- and here is a 4k ultra-wide angle, video using the tcl20 pro 5g- and here is the macro video from the TCL 20 pro 5g. Another awesome thing I want to mention as well is that this device does support 4k video for both the front and rear cameras, which is definitely good to see now as far as performance goes with the TCL 20 pro 5g we're getting six gigabytes of ram, and we're getting the Qualcomm snapdragon 750 g 5g processor. Now I did run a geek bench 5 benchmark test here with the phone, and I'll show you the scores from that test.

Right now, but essentially I got a single core score of 656 and a multi-core score of 1973. So what I recommend doing is running this test on your current phone and then compare your scores to these scores. To get a better idea of whether the tcl20 pro 5g will be a performance upgrade for you, but from my experience with the phone performance has not been a problem. Everything does run nice and smoothly, and I've used other devices with the same processor as well, and it's always been a great experience now that particular processor is not quite as powerful as a flagship processor, for example, but if you're doing pretty normal tasks such as watching video content going on social media phone calls text messages some late gaming as well, then this will be perfectly fine for you now. If you are looking to do more advanced tasks on your phone, such as video, editing or playing really high performance games, then you might want to consider going for something more powerful, but again for the vast majority of people out there.

This will get the job done for you now. As far as the battery capacity goes with the tcl20 pro we're getting a 4 500 William hour internal battery, and, as I mentioned earlier on in the video, this device does support 18 watt fast charging. So not only are you getting a lot of battery capacity, but you're also going to be able to recharge that battery pretty quickly. Now the software that we're getting here at the phone is android 11, but it also features TCL's twist on the software too they've added in a variety of their own first party applications such as these various tools, for example, and in addition to that they've added other features such as this app edge, where you can add a variety of different applications and there's even a built-in ruler. So that's pretty interesting as well, and you've probably noticed already, but with this phone we are getting a curved display, it's not extremely curved, but it definitely is noticeable, and it definitely makes the experience feel a bit more immersive here.

Another awesome thing, too, is that TCL has promised at least two major android software updates, so this phone will be getting android, 12 and android 13, which is really cool to see too, because it does give the phone a bit more longevity. Another nice thing as well about the tcl20 pro 5g is that we are getting NFC. So if you do enjoy making mobile contactless payments with your device, then you will be able to do it here with this phone now. One downside, though, is that this phone does only have one speaker at least when you're, watching video or listening to music. Now, if you're using this phone to make phone calls, you will hear audio coming out of the earpiece, but for general media consumption, you only get audio coming out of the main speaker on the bottom, which is a bit of a different approach compared to other devices that this phone does compete against, such as the Samsung Galaxy a52 5g, where, with that phone we're getting audio coming out of both the bottom speaker and the earpiece as well, which definitely makes audio sound a bit clearer and louder.

Now. The good news, though, is that, with this phone, the speaker quality is still good. So it's certainly not a dealbreaker, but it is a feature that I'd like to see them incorporate into a successor model to this phone, but now that we've gone over a variety of different highlights about the tcl20 pro 5g. Let's take a closer look at the hardware now I've already talked quite a bit about the front panel here, definitely a great looking display, which is ideal for content consumption. Now taking a look on the left side of the phone, we do get the smart key right here.

So essentially it's a customizable key that you can program to do a variety of different things in the phone. So, for example, if you want to tap on the smart key and have it access Instagram immediately, then you can have it set up to do that or if you want to tap on the smart key and have it call a particular person you get that option as well. Now, with the smart key you can choose to, have it either open a feature or open an app? So if you have it open an app, then you can have. Maybe one of your favorite apps, for example, be pulled up when you tap on the button. So, for example, maybe you use Instagram quite a bit.

You can then technically set this phone to access. Instagram, anytime, you tap on that button, which is a really nice feature to have, but if you also wanted to just open up a particular feature on the phone, you can see that we get a list of a bunch of different things here, for example, you can have the button launch the camera. You can have the button. Take a selfie. You can have the button optimize the phone.

There are a ton of different things. You can have the button take a screenshot if you want to which is pretty cool too. So I like that. We're getting that feature- and I know it's something that TCL does try to incorporate into a variety of their phones and I hope they keep that feature around indefinitely for future devices, because I really like that versatility, but taking a look on the right side of the phone with the power button, volume down and volume up, then up top here we're getting the noise-cancelling microphone, an infrared blaster for controlling TVs, for example. So this phone could technically be like a remote, and we're getting a 3.5, millimeter headphone jack, then on the bottom of the phone, we're getting the slot for the micro SD card and sim card we're getting the USB c port for charging and data transfer, microphone and the speaker and then taking a look at the back of the device. We have this pretty cool layout here, with the cameras flush against the back of the phone in the upper left corner.

So it is pretty cool that there are no camera bumps with this device with the TCL logo right there, and then we have the flash. So I'm a big fan of how this phone looks visually. It's definitely a bit of a minimalist design, but at the same time, is unique compared to some various other smartphones we have out there now. This device has so many features that I will be making a dedicated tips and tricks video about it, because there's no way. I can show all of that in this video.

In fact, we're already running out of time here, but I hope you enjoyed learning about the tcl20 pro 5g. If you did definitely give the video a thumbs up- and let me know what other content you'd like me to do here on the channel about this device. But this is Kevin here. This is the tcl20 pro 5g, and I will see you in the next video.
