Should you get the OnePlus 8? | Full Review

Hey guys this is Kyle from tech lingo. In our last video we share with you our unboxing experience of the one plus eight, which was announced about a month ago in April 2020. Now we've been using this device for about a week or so now, and we'll be happy to share with you some of our thoughts, what we like and dislike about the 1+8. So let's get started with our full review. Now the OnePlus 8 comes in three different colors. You have the Onyx black one, which is the one we have here as well as Glacial green and interstellar glow, my personal favorite.

Now it's priced from 998 Singapore dollars, which is pretty attractive. You have eight gigs of ram with 128 gigs of storage space. Now, if you're looking to get something a little more, you can actually bump it up to twelve kicks of ram and 256 gigs of storage space, which will set you back at about 1098 Singapore dollars. Now, let's start off by talking about the physical aspects of this device. Now you have a really beautiful curved display in the front on the left, and the right side is just curved to the edges, and it really feels great in the hands now I've always been using large forms, which are similarly sized too, like let's say the pixel three XL, if not the iPhone + additions and when I hold the 1 + 8, it really feels quite comfortable, especially for a one-handed use.

Now, let's have a closer look at the buttons here, and I must say that these buttons by 1 plus, are really tactile, they're, really satisfying, and I'm, just gonna. Let you hear how it sounds like when I clicked onto the lock button, as well as the volume rocker buttons and like we've mentioned in the previous video. There is also a slider that allows you to change between different ringer modes, and it really produces this really solid click sounds into the different positions when changing into these different modes, and it's really quite satisfying just gonna, let you hear it as well and lastly, looking at the bottom of the phone, you have a USB, type-c port, and I'm happy to say that this is USB version, 3.1, and I'm. Raising this up, because you know version 3.1 actually allows for a much faster data transfer speed, so, whether you're connecting between your phone and your computer or even phone to phone, you can expect to transfer data much faster than you know, the previous phones that were also spotting type C, but some of them will limit it to USB 2.0 speeds. So, let's move on to talk a little more about the display on the 1+8.

You have a six point. Five inch AMOLED display and what's really great here- is that you have a 90 hood refresh rate, and you really get that really smooth experience. It's really feeling responsive, especially when you're scrolling content and for those of you are not really familiar with what 90 Hertz actually means. It just goes to say that your screen refreshes about 90 times per second, and to give you a bit of perspective, a lot of current I phones, including the iPhone 11, actually kept out at 60 Hertz. So you know when we're looking at all the modern day: smartphones, a lot of Android phones, even the OnePlus 8 Pro, which is the larger brother of this device.

Here it supports up to a hundred and twenty Hertz refresh rate, so that it's like twice. You know you have 60 Hertz down here, and you have a hundred and twenty Hertz and right smack in the middle. Here you have the OnePlus eight at ninety Hertz. So, overall the experience that you're getting of this display is really going to be quite different from your ordinary smartphones. It's going to feel like it.

It's faster, it's going to feel like it's more responsive and I, really a 90 Hertz display. You know once you are there, you cannot go back to a 60 Hertz display. Now, let's move on to talk about the camera performance of the 1+8? Now you have a triple camera setup here you have a main camera at 48 megapixels with optical image stabilization. You also have an ultra-wide lens at 16 megapixels, with a hundred and 16 degrees field of view. And, lastly, you have a macro lens, which is at 2, megapixels and I would estimate, maybe about 3 to 4 fingers of a distance between the camera and the object that you're trying to take and for the main cameras' performance.

We were really satisfied with the daytime shops that were able to achieve, especially with HDR mode when you have a bright, sunlight and buildings at this at the site as well, it doesn't get too overexposed or too dark. Overall, it just looks great even for the ultra-wide shots that you can see here. I think we're all really satisfied with the images that have come up from these two camera lenses. Now, when we look at the night shots on the OnePlus 8, where you know, OnePlus calls this the nights cape mode honestly I think these pictures could be better night. Shots appear to be a little noisy, especially at the bright parts of the image.

You might find them to be a little overblown, and you really lose all detail in the area of the image and now, when we try out the macro mode, honestly, I'm quite disappointed I'm, not to sure if it's because of the 2 megapixel sensor behind this macro lens, but even with perfect lighting conditions. I still see some noise in the images and when we do try it indoors, I do find that you know it's quite blurred. Sometimes you know you may not get the correct focus, or you may just turn out to be a little blurry to the point whereby, even when you're able to take a macro shot, I'm, not to sure if it's a good usable image, we've tried taking a shot of a 50 dollar note here in Singapore and me. Do know that, from my experience with other devices that also have a macro lens, I was able to read out this hidden text, which appears to be aligned with our naked eye. But if you do close up with a macro lens, you should be able to see certain text on this line and I couldn't really achieve that with the macro lens on the 1+8.

Unfortunately, now in the front you have a single front-facing camera whenever you activate the front-facing camera that it will be. This ring light indication around the lens to kind of indicate that hey you know the front camera is in use and I thought. That was a really nice touch, because sometimes you want to be sure that you know no one is spying on you, especially if the front-facing camera is activated without your permission. Moving on, let's talk about the audio experience on this device. You have a stereo speaker setup, so you have a speaker at the top of the display, as well as a second speaker at the bottom of the device beside the USB type-c port.

They can get really loud and, in my opinion, it's also clear enough, especially when you're making phone calls or voices appear to be really clear. But I do hope that you know. Hopefully, in the future, we get a little more low, mid-range on these smartphone speakers in terms of battery life, I was able to get a full day of use and as well. Something really nice here is that you have fast charging for the included 30 what charging adapters, and it was advertised to be giving you about 50% charge in just 22 minutes. There's also this optimized charging mode.

That kind of pauses your charging at 80%, and this is in accordance to your charging or your usage patterns. You know if you're always, let's say leaving it charged overnight. Somehow it does something to prevent your device from being overcharged for prolonged period, and this actually helps to extend your battery life and only one plus eight. Thankfully, you still have a fingerprint scanner, and this is something that I really like, because I feel that you have you a more control when you have a finger trying to activate or unlock your device, rather than just having to look at your phone, and then it instantly gets unlocked and the optical scanner on this one plus eight is actually under the screen, and it's really fast and responsive in a way that when you pick up the phone, the screen lights up, that green dot lights up. So you know instantly where to place your device, and can quickly unlock it at any time.

So, what's missing in the 1+8? Firstly, you are missing out on the wireless charging feature, so I'm, not to sure. If this is something that a lot of users would use, especially for a wireless charging pad, because the only works if you place the device downwards. Something else that's missing is also the ip68 water and dust resistant.68 means that you can leave your phone submerged up to one meter of water, but that doesn't mean that you should go swimming the device. It just means you can kind of protect yourself from let's say, accidental water damage when you splash water and things like that, the OnePlus 8 pro has the wireless charging and the OnePlus 8 pro also has the IP 68 greeting. So if you find that this is something that you really need, perhaps you should look at the 1+8 pro and lastly, I'm not too sure.

If this is still a thing, there is no headphone jack on either device. Now, in conclusion, what the OnePlus it'd be something that we recommend I would say definitely because of its really attractive price range, starting off at 998 Singapore dollars, and to put that into comparison, something like another flagship device from Samsung. The Galaxy S 20 will set you back about 1298 Singapore dollars, so this is pretty attractively priced. One thing I also like to mention is that this device could be labeled as future-proof because I would say it supports 5g, particularly now, at this point of time, when this video is being uploaded, there isn't a 5g ready network in Singapore and for that to be ready, I think we're looking at a timeline between mid to end of 2021. So it's really.

You know it's perfect to know that your device that you're getting now will be ready to support this 5g network, maybe one or two years down the road. Another thing that we also like to mention is that you have support for Wi-Fi 6. Now this is the new version of Wi-Fi, which I think it's called 802.11 e X, and we're looking at support for like these new routers that will be coming on to the consumer market pretty soon. So if you're looking to upgrade your relatives at home, you can expect to actually gain much faster transfer speeds wirelessly through Wi-Fi, so we're not going to go into the technical details of what Wi-Fi stack is all about, but just know that this device is already to support this new standard of Wi-Fi and with that we've come to the end of this particular full review of the 1+8. We hope you've enjoyed this video and don't forget to hit that like button.
