Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 Hands-on: Under-Display Camera Demo!

Samsung's Galaxy Z, fold 3 is here it's cheaper, more durable and now supports the s pen hi, I'm Michael josh, your gadget, matchmaker helping you find the right device to match your needs. Samsung just unveiled the new Galaxy Z fold, three, and because earlier this week I got some time to play with the device. I'm here to tell you all about it. This is our Samsung Galaxy z, fold 3 hands on. If there's one big takeaway from the launch of the new Galaxy Z fold 3 is that prices have gone down from last year's z-fold 2 launch price of 2 000, the new fold 3 starts at 1800. I know it's still a lot to pay for a smartphone, but it's a good indication that this bleeding edge tech will one day make its way to even more affordable price points.

Of course, there's more to the story from a tech innovation standpoint, there are two big takeaways that you should remember one when opened up at first glance, the full three doesn't seem to have a punch hole for its selfie camera. But if you look closely there's one hidden underneath the display now this is the first time we're seeing an under display camera in any Samsung smartphone and how this works is that there are actually a few missing pixels above the display for the camera to kind of peep through and then AI is used to kind of fill in the missing pixels on paper. The specs of this camera are inferior to last year's model, but given that there's still a selfie camera up front, it shouldn't be much of an issue unless you video call a lot. Actually, when the screen is a bright white, you can actually notice the pixels being filled in around where the camera is supposed to be and when you're watching a YouTube video, it's not as obvious and from some angles. You wouldn't even know that there's a camera hidden underneath the display.

Now I can't say for sure how better or worse this camera is you'll have to wait for my review. I will definitely let you know, but I just wanted to say that I'm glad the technology is here, and I can't really think of a better device for this to be implemented on one. This isn't a selfie camera that you would use as much and when you use a fold in tablet mode, you get a fully uninterrupted experience, which is the dream really the holy grail for any smartphone more on what you can do with the full 3's big display later, but first, this next big feature is something we all knew was inevitable. This device now supports the s. Pen.

Samsung is announcing two new pen models. Alongside the fold three both are designed with a self-retracting nib so that, no matter how hard you press, the sharp tip is not gonna drill into the flexible display. The first of these pens is called the s pen fold edition made specifically for and will only work with, the z-fold 3. Just like the s-pen that debuted with the galaxy s21 series, it doesn't have a battery and Bluetooth, but does all the basic stuff like taking notes which, to be honest, is all you really need? You can buy the s pen, fold edition separately for 49.99 or with a case that has a slot to store the s pen that one is 79.99, then there's the s pen pro, which retails for 99.99 backwards compatible with all Samsung devices that support the s pen, but also with Bluetooth. So all this wand, like air gestures, are supported too.

This pen is thicker and more pen-like, and it's got onboard memory so that you can copy something off one device and paste it on another Samsung device. Both s pens will deliver nine milliseconds of latency, which is the fastest in the industry, in par with the note 20 ultra and the iPad Pro. This just means that there's going to be hardly any visible delay from drawing a stroke and that stroke appearing on your screen at first glance, there's nothing intrinsically different between the fold two and the fold. Three. Of course, the fold three now comes in three colors phantom green phantom silver and phantom black.

I'm definitely eyeing the green one. The black one is cool to an improvement over last year offering a matte black versus the glossy finish on the back of the fold 2, which I immediately covered up with a leather case. It's gorilla, glass Vitus on both sides. By the way, the full 3 is also roughly the same size as the fold 2, but in the hands it feels thinner and lighter when folded shut. The gap is not very different from last year and definitely not as small as the mate x2 Samsung says.

The hinge mechanism is the same, but they've reduced its size, so it doesn't protrude from the phone. So much. It's also made from a new material Samsung is calling it armor aluminum. That is ten percent more durable than on the fold two, by the way, if you're wondering if Samsung is going to continue offering that made to order special custom, color hinge well, the answer is sadly no and while we're on the topic of durability, for the first time ever on a foldable device, the Galaxy Z fold, 3 is ipx8 water and dust resistant. Samsung says water can still get in the device.

They've just made sure to give it a water resistant coating. That said, because water damage is not covered by warranty, I still wouldn't recommend taking it swimming or doing underwater photography. Both the cover display and the inner display on the z-fold 3 are still the same size as on the fold 2. So outside you get a 6.2 inch cover display and when, in tablet mode a 7.6 inch main display two important changes, though both screens now have a 120hz panel. So you get buttery smooth scrolling, no matter how you choose to use your phone.

More importantly- and this was a main pain point for early adopters- the plastic top layer of the display that sits below the screen protector is made of a completely different kind of plastic, that is more stretchable. Samsung, says it's 80 percent, more durable, and they're promising 200 000 folds, or about 100 folds a day for five years. This, of course, isn't something that I can verify over the course of a quick review, but make sure to follow me on Twitter and Instagram, because I will often go on there and post updates to my reviews with real world notes. One of my problems with folding devices is that android isn't really optimized for devices with unconventional form factors. Thankfully, Samsung has taken matters into their own hands, making tweaks to the user experience and working with third-party app developers, so that more apps take advantage of the extra screen real estate apps like Netflix and Spotify, Google's roster of apps like YouTube, Gmail and chrome, and work apps, like slack zoom and Microsoft, word just to name a few.

For example, if you're on YouTube, you can prop your phone up like this and have a video play on one half of the display and have the flex mode panel appear on the bottom. That gives you easy access to brightness and volume controls, as well as an easy screenshot button when you're using the camera. Well capture view lets you compose and take shots while also previewing shots, you've already taken at the same time over here on the left, hand, side and remember edge panel that contains shortcuts to frequently use apps and app pairs. You can now pin it to the side of your screen and have it work like a windows dock. So it's always there.

On the camera front, nothing has changed from last year on paper, the z-fold 3 has the same camera system, but thanks to software improvements, photos theoretically should be better. Basically, all the camera improvements that came to the s21 series make it here. Also on its back side, there's a 12 megapixel ultra-wide camera, a 12 megapixel wide camera and a 12 megapixel telephoto camera with 2x zoom aesthetically. The camera bump isn't as big either. I know you'll want to see camera samples so make sure you're subscribed to this YouTube channel with the bell icon, pressed so that you get notified as soon as we post our review video inside there's, a 4 megapixel under display camera and up front a 10 megapixel cover camera as to be expected.

The Galaxy Z fold 3 is powered by Qualcomm's top of the line. Snapdragon 888 it comes with only one ram, offering 12 gigabytes here in the US. You can get it with either 256 gigabytes or 512 gigabyte storage options. One area where, on paper last year's phone was better, is that this year's model has 4 400 William hours of battery, which is 100 less than last year. Samsung says this was meant to accommodate the phone's slightly smaller profile, but no worries thanks to its five nanometer processor.

They expect battery life to be roughly the same and if you're wondering there's also no charger included in the box this year. But if you have one, the phone supports: Samsung's, 25 watt, USB charger, the Galaxy Z fold, 3 starts at 1799.99 for the 256 gigabyte model and just under 1 900. If you want 512 gigabytes of storage, pre-orders begin on August, 11th device goes on sale, August 27th. Of course, if you pre-order there, Samsung is offering perks, including a 200 samsung. com credit that you can put towards a future purchase.
