Samsung Galaxy S20 ULTRA Review

This video is sponsored by surf shark. Three phones designed around a revolutionary camera experience. This is the phone that will change. Photography, I, thinks those statements make it pretty clear what Samson's focus was on for the Galaxy S 20 ultra. Let's talk about my experience with this thing and, of course, if they manage to deliver on the promises with the cameras coming in only cosmic gray and black, the ultras design has actually grown on me and looks like a Sampson phone from the past few years with three major standouts, it's more narrow and slightly taller, which I actually think makes it easier to handle being a slightly thicker and heavier, however, might turn some people off. The 6.9 inch display is essentially flat now, with way less of it spilling over the sides of the phone and on the back, all the photography magic now lives in this polarizing new camera cluster design, starting at 128, gigabytes of storage and 12 gigabytes of RAM. This phone has flown through everything I've thrown at it during day to day use SD card support is still here too, as a cheaper alternative to expand storage phone calls and video chats have sounded awesome, whether it was through the earpiece or on speakerphone.

Watching content has been a great experience too, as you would expect, with the massive display and loud stereo speakers. What's special about the display this year is the introduction of a 120 Hertz refresh rate. The main benefits are going to be smoother animations and scrolling. All the Box. The phone is set to 60 Hertz, so you'll have to enable it in the settings.

The trade-off, as stated, is a hit on the battery life, which I'll talk about in a bit.120 Hertz is the real deal. You could argue that since most apps still support 120 Hertz, yet it's slightly overrated but start using the various multitasking options built into the software, and you quickly appreciate the difference and smoothness no stutters or hesitation. It just feels really, really fluid. After using the higher refresh rate going back to 60 Hertz made the phone feel extremely jittery. You really notice it.

The good news, though, is after an hour or so you'll readjust and be perfectly fine, since everyone perceives things differently, you'll have to try it out for yourself to see if you even notice it enough during day to day use or if you'd rather just have the extra battery. It is worth noting that the 120 Hertz refresh rate is only available a full HD resolution, not the quad HD res Roman's are that it should be enabled in a future update refresh rate aside the thing that impressed me the most is the touch sensitivity which jumps from 60 Hertz previously to 240 Hertz. This might be the real MVP and what's making the phone feels so much more responsive the content, the screen sort of just sticks to your finger and I love. It Samsung introduced the ultrasonic in display fingerprint scanner last year and I had a lot of mixed results with it. I love, glass, screen protectors and when I added the extra layer of glass, the scanner was even less reliable.

It was not fun to use with the s20 ultra I decided to stick with the pre-installed. A screen protector I will see the fingerprint scanner is sitting at about a 95 percent success rate. For me, it's a much better experience. The only time it gives me trouble is outdoors on freezing days. It doesn't seem to play well with really dry skin, so moisturize I, guess if you live in warmer climates, you should have nothing to worry about.

I do appreciate that face. Unlock is also an option and having it enabled house for those scenarios when the scanner doesn't want to cooperate for security. The fingerprint scanner is the way to go, though, as face a log is 2d. Unlike the 3d scan you'd get on the latest pixels or iPhones. The phone comes with a five thousand William hour battery, which is the largest I've ever used for general day-to-day use, even with a hundred twenty Hertz enabled the s20 ultra easily gets me through a full day and I think that's going to be the case for most people.

However, on a couple of trips, we're all shooting a lot of 4k video and taking tons of pictures under direct sunlight I was able to drain the battery down to about 20% by 4:00 p. m. Samsung includes a 25 watt. Superfast charger in the box.30 minutes plugged in can get you about 50%, with a full charge taking a little over an hour. Those times are amazing and part of the reason why I don't feel the need to charge overnight I'll, typically plug in while I get ready in the morning and be fully charged by the time.

I leave the house standby time is an area where I love to see some improvements. Often times I've seen the battery drain anywhere from 8 to 10 percent overnight, while I sleep Samsung does offer a big B routine to help combat this. It's an automation that turns on power, saving mode room to sleep hours to conserve battery, enabling that did cut down on standby drain to about 4 or 5 percent overnight. Alright, let's finally talk about the star of the show the cameras, the single 40 megapixel front-facing camera take selfies that are different when compared to previous Samsung smartphones. There's a noticeable improvement in detail with a little more contrast thrown in because of this selfies look more natural.

With less of that dreamy look going on, it might actually be my favorite selfie camera. At the moment, I've been seriously impressed. Video looks fantastic to you, making this solid for video calls or vlogging on the back. The main sensor is 108 megapixels that by default bends down to a 12 megapixel photo, you do have the option to shoot at the full 108 megapixel photo. This opens up the ability to crop in and get a much sharper image that wouldn't be possible.

Otherwise, I like that Stefan has made this easy to do right when viewing photos. The sensor snaps some beautiful pictures that are often bright with punchy colors on multiple occasions, I've caught myself saying whoa, that's a really nice sort of crazy how far smartphone cameras have come in less than ideal lighting. The processing still has a tendency to soften and lighten skin tones to make people look more flattering, but hey I'm, not complaining with enough separation between your subject and the background. The s20 ultra actually has some perfect natural depth of field. Aka blurry background goodness, not everyone will love it, but I dig it, and it really makes your subject stand out more.

Just don't get too close, though, because you might start to notice the edges of your subjects, beginning to blur. ? I've enjoyed the natural bookcase so much that I don't even feel the need to use Samson's light focus mode. If you do, though, the time-of-flight sensor gives the s20 ultra some of the best edge detection, I've seen low-light, shots have looked good, and the improved night mode finally has an animation. So you know how long you'll need to hold still for night moon shots. Do you tend to have a yellow orange hue to them, which isn't ideal, but I've actually been impressed by the detail and sharpness with 100-times Bey's zoom based amps right beside the camera? The 100x results you get it just doesn't justify this aggressive branding, it's subtle, but I couldn't do without it.

Now the good news, the five times and ten times, zoom shots, look good like perfect. Even at thirty times the pictures are totally usable weddings concerts, sporting events. There are plenty of situations where you can't get any closer and the higher quality zoom comes in really handy. My husband has actually bored the phone on multiple occasions to take pictures of menus while ordering takeout. So there's that too, just like how ultra whites have become the norm, I can see telephoto lenses with more capable zoom I'm falling soon.

The ability to frame and snap pictures at a distance makes the s20 ultra one of the most versatile smartphone cameras I've ever used when it comes to video Samsung brings a cave video recording into the man full credits to them for making a video recording possible on a phone. It's impressive, the 8k video Snap feature is something I would definitely use. It produces 30, 3, megapixel images from any frame inland a came video recording, even though I'll likely stick to 4k or 1080p for most situations due to better stabilization, I love having the option for super special moments with the sky, high price tag and camera focused marketing expectations are also going to be higher, and every flaw is gonna. Stand out that much more. There are a couple of issues I've run into you with the camera experience.

First up the autofocus, it's slower than the note m+ and has a tendency to jump around, especially in video as it stands. You definitely need some patience in situations where you want to just quickly snap a photo or record a video. It can be frustrating and lead you to missing that special moments. Samsung has officially issued a statement that they will be fixing this in an update, so definitely keep an eye out for it. Another area I was hoping for improved performance was with indoor motion blur, but unfortunately, taking several pictures of my ROG has resulted in soft and slightly blurry photos even with the slightest of movement now embrace lit environments or if your pet isn't moving too quickly.

There is noticeable improvement in detail from previous Samsung smartphones before I wrap up huge thanks to the video sponsor sir shark, for making reviews like this possible surf, surf VPN encrypts the internet traffic sent you and from your devices making sure nobody can see where you are and what you're doing online, especially relevant on unsecured public Wi-Fi, while visiting Japan I fell in love with several Japanese shows on Netflix, but to my disappointment, they weren't available when I got back home with surf shark I've, been able to bypass the Geo restriction and continue to watch with all physically being in Japan. There's also no limit to the number of devices you can connect at a time. So with one all your loved ones can stay secure to try a search track. Although parts of the camera performance have stumbled out the gate, the s20 altar does a lot of the other smartphone features really well. It's the most ambitious hardware bump we've seen out of Samsung in years, they've thrown everything they have at you to try and justify the price tag. And it's hard to argue the hardware. As a package isn't impressive, I would have loved to see a 4G version of the s20 altar here in North America, to bring the price down a little, especially for those who won't be taking advantage of 5g for the next few years, myself included, but that might have been out of Samson's control. The camo software needs some polish, no doubt about it.

If you're on the fence, the things you should ask yourself are: will you utilize the extended zoom capabilities and do you have an actual use for the higher megapixel images? If you answered no to both of those I, take a hard look at the regular s 20 and s 20, plus they offer a much better value for what a very similar experience. But if you want the best, Samsung has to offer and money isn't a concern. The ultra is a lot of fun and offers one of the most versatile camera setups on a phone.
