Razer Kishi Review (iPhone) - Best Game Controller for iOS?

Okay, so this is the new racer fish. Now this is not a totally new product. They released an USB version of this a few months ago that works with android phones, but this one has a lightning connector, so this is going to be working with iOS devices. So this is a little small, portable controller that you can take with you anywhere, and you just plug in your phone, and this is the state of it when you're not using it. So it's a pretty decent size. It kind of fits in my hand here, but you can just throw this in your bag and forget about it.

So when you are ready to start using this, you just need to turn it over, and then it has a couple of like tabs right here. You just need to press them away from each other, and then it will open up and then now you get this kind of stretchy little mechanism here that allows you to stretch this open and place your phone inside. So, on the right side of this device, you will see the lightning connector and that's, of course, where the bottom of the phone is going to go. So now you just need to take your iPhone, I'm using the iPhone 11 Pro max here first and just place it in the bottom snap it into place and then stretch it out and then boom there you go. Your phone is now in place, and it's ready for you to start gaming.

Now this is a tall phone, but you still have a little of scratchiness here. So just in case the iPhone 12 Pro max is a taller phone than this one. You should still be fine. I think one area that you might have some concern with is just the width so if, for some reason, Apple makes the next iPhones wider, you might run into an issue, but I don't think that's going to be the case now inside the box that this came in, you don't really get a lot of extra stuff, but you do get a couple of extra spacers, and so this will allow this to be able to work with all the different iPhone sizes that are out there. So this will allow this to kind of be able to morph and work with all of those, and so here's a list of iPhones that are for sure to work with this, but the iPhone SE is not on this list.

So, let's see if this will work. So I have the SE here the 2020 version- and this is one of the smaller iPhones out there and snaps in and like so. It's not like a super tight fit with this, and maybe the other spacer may work a little better, but even still it still feels good. It still like feels fine. Furthermore, it's not going to like randomly fall out or anything so right here you are good to go with the iPhone SE! Oh, and this controller does not have a built-in battery.

It gets its power from the phone itself and don't worry it's not going to be like a drastic drop-in battery. Once you start using this controller with your phone um and then also too, it does have a lightning port here at the bottom. So this will allow you to do pass-through charging, so you can take a lightning, cable and place it in the bottom there and then now you can hook this up to a power source, and it will charge the phone through the controller and so yeah. This port is only used for charging, though, so you cannot connect a pair of headphones that might have a lightning connector at the tip of them um. So the only way you can use headphones and also this controller is to connect to the phone wirelessly via something like Bluetooth, all right.

So now let me load up a game, and I'm going to start with ocean horn 2. If I can tap on it so yeah you can see this is way better, just having these joysticks to be able to move around instead of having to use a screen like this I mean this is doable, but this is way better now. This brings me to one thing that I wish was better and that's the placement of the right joystick, because I think it's down too far. I think it needs to be a little up here closer to the button just like it is on the Xbox controller. As you can see right here, it's a little more right here to the side of the button, but this one is just down too much so when I'm using it, it feels like I'm using like the middle part of my thumb instead of the tip of it like I am using it with the left controller here so yeah.

This was up a little more. I think it will be a little better because you can see the tip of my thumb. Kind of normally rests right here next to where I think it should be, but besides that these thumb sticks are good, you get perfect control over your movement and just a way better upgrade than using the screen and as far as the buttons, I have to say that they're good. I think some people describe them as being mushy. I say that these are definitely you know not better than your standalone controllers out there, but definitely it's not the worst that I've used.

As far as like a portable controller for your phone or something like that, so I mean they could be a little better, but I'm definitely not mad at them, and so this does have some shoulder buttons as well, so you can see they work pretty good and then the triggers feel perfect to come here. Oh, I'm going to need some more ammunition, I'm about to run out anyway, but let me get out of here and go to another game. Let's see, let me go to Pac-Man and try out the d-pad, and so I will say that if you do want to call something kind of mushy on this controller, I definitely would say it might be the d-pad more than the buttons I wish they just were a little firmer, but again they're, not that bad, and now, let's go to the default racing game that everybody shows when they're showing off gaming on their phone and that is asphalt.9, not. You know what I said: um all right. So let's go ahead and start playing this.

Oh, and before I start the race, you do have some buttons on the bottom, so you do have a home button which doesn't do too much in iOS, but then also too, you do have like this menu button here that can bring up certain things in certain apps boom. Let's go, so this is the game that you can really just find how good the controls are. You can see how it responds to me using the thumb stick, and this has very low latency, because it is directly connected to the phone using the lightning port instead of using a Bluetooth connection which any type of wireless connection you're going to experience, sometimes latency, but this one feels really, really responsive, and I need to get one spinner Rooney here. Let me see if I can get one: that's not what I wanted here. We go boom, get out my way, all right, so yeah I mean this is like the uh, the game that really gives you that full control that will allow you to actually get an advantage while you're playing it instead of having to use the touchscreen so yeah.

This is good. Now I don't know why I have studio on this home screen right here, because it doesn't work with iOS yet, and that goes for Microsoft's Xbox game streaming platform too. Hopefully, Microsoft and apple, and everybody can work it out. So they can get those type of game streaming platforms on iOS, but for right now, you're out of luck, the ones that it does work with. It is perfect, I'm really liking this and the fact that when you're done playing, you can just take out your phone, and then you just need to connect it together.

Like so and then now you press this back part, and then it snaps into place, and now this thing gets portable and ready for you to just throw it in your bag and then take it out when you're ready to game and remember, if you don't have an iPhone, you can still pick up their USB version, which is mostly identical. There are some changes like the uh indicator lights right here and also the button at the bottom right here has a play button on the USB version versus the three lines button or whatever, but pretty much they're going to act. The same so yeah racer fish, it costs 99. So it is up there when it comes to the price, and that really depends on how much you game on your phone, whether that price is going to be worth it for you, but out of all the kind of portable game controls that I've used for smartphones. I have to say right now and this one is my favorite.

So this is what I think.
