Pixel XL unboxing in 2021! By Damien Wilde

After, what feels like four full years of searching for a good deal on this device? I finally managed to get my hands on a sealed. OG, google, pixel, XL, and we're going to be unboxing it here right in 2021, let's break the fourth wall, really quick as 97 of you out there watching are actually not subscribers. So let's change that today so that you're, the first to watch more long-term, looks at hardware just like the Google Pixel XL and much more on top and then, if you want to take the conversation even further still be sure to join the official channel discord where you'll find all sorts of wallpapers snippets behind the scenes, q and a's and more on top. So the pixel line, maybe hasn't been as successful as google has hoped thus far. But man was the original pixel a huge deal in the android space when the pixel and pixel XL arrived in 2016, I must admit I really, really wanted to upgrade from this nexus 6p, but I just never happened to do so. As I mentioned, I've been searching to get hold of one of these devices in decent condition for a long time, and I paid the princely sum of 117 quid one bay for a sealed 32xl model, which I think is a fantastic deal for what is still technically a brand-new smartphone.

A lot has changed since google unveiled the original pixel and I don't even mean, from the hardware perspective, just looking at the box compared to the slimline, pixel 5 packaging. You better believe there's going to be some extras included here, but before we dive in just on the packaging, you can see a prominent Chromecast, Google Assistant and the now dead. Daydream logos, it's kind of weird that the daydream VR has not taken off, but it does make a ton of sense. The rest of the packaging, though, is really minimal and plain opening up, though I actually like the fact that you slide the two portions apart to reveal the first pixel branded smartphone that actually was originally designed by HTC, but Google had originally planned to have Huawei, make the hardware but stumbled over Huawei wanting to dual brand the device. Now we get to see the device for itself and at the rear, you probably can't see it, but at the front you can see that iPhone influence.

It actually looks a bit like an iPhone 6 knock-off, probably more than I actually imagined weirdly. This is actually the first time I have actually seen the OG pixel XL in the flesh, and I must admit it's a lot nicer than I anticipated. I had to take a break here to charge the device, but it does ship with android 7.1 nougat, which was only originally available on the pixel until December 2016, but it still retained a ton of pixel only options. The final update for this device was issued in December 2019, meaning it is no longer supported by google and the last full OS upgrade is to android 10 that closed three years of full hardware and software support, which is still a big deal for an android flagship here in 2021, and a lot of OEMs are slowly starting to follow suit. Of course, there are plenty of reasons.

I think this phone was a big deal when it launched, but the software is arguably the PS2 resistance. It's clean light, and, surprisingly fast with the snapdragon 821 and four gigabytes of ram, the 1080p 16x9 AMOLED measures in at 5.5 inches, which is ridiculously small for a phone marketed as XL, at least by 2021 standards, but it's just a sign of the times, given how bezels are now almost non-existent here. In the present day I have to say I actually really like the white and silver color combination. It was the only device actually looked for it doesn't look out of place even now. Turning over as well, you can see that rear panel now has that iconic two-tone finish that has become the signature of the pixel series that sadly disappeared with the pixel 4.

, the rear, fingerprint scanner or the pixel imprint is still here as well, and I'm glad it has returned on newer devices because in a postcode world, masks are probably here to stay at least for a little while longer, and it is a little faster than face unlock, especially when you're wearing a mask, which it won't work with. There's also a solo camera. That's got no stabilization, but there is digital stabilization on offer with the 12.3 megapixel sensor, and it was a huge deal this camera sensor when it came out, it probably changed the game or shifted it in googles favor for the first time in their entire hardware history, putting the pixel aside, though, for a moment there's a lot to unpack from the box itself. You've got the obligatory USB cable, an adapter, an USB c to c cable and the 18 watt google charge brick, which is still being used today by all pixel devices. So, let's please see google update this, at least for the pixel 6 to faster than 18 watt charges.

I'm actually surprised you don't get any in the box headphones as google touted the headphone port mocking apple in ads during the actual launch event, and we all know how that panned out. I have to say it's not the most extensive set of extras, but it's still quite a collection of extras in a box of this size.
