Pixel 2 XL vs Pixel XL (2016): Ultimate Camera Comparison (Part 2: Video)

He Frances Brannon, with Android police and in my previous video, with the pixel Excel, the first gen in the pixel to excel. We compared the photo quality between the two and surprisingly enough. The pixel excel beat out the pixel to excel in a few situations. For this one we'll check out the video quality between the two. If you haven't already checked out part 1 of this ultimate camera comparison go ahead and check out the link above in this video, we'll check out specific areas of quality between the pixel excel and the pixel to excel, using the stock camera app, and we'll see if the first gen pixel excel outperforms the pixel to excel in areas like it did with the photos, we'll compare a low light, dynamic range and focus, speed, detail, slow-motion stabilization, lens flare and the audio the pixel one has a Sony: IMF 378, 1.5, 5, micron, f, 2.0, aperture sensor and the pixel tool has a Sony. I MX 362, dual pixel 1.4 micron F 1.8 aperture sensor. Let's look at the low-light! Well, it's very difficult for cameras.

It typically results in a lot of noise in the image and in turn you lose a lot of detail, and you have the splotchy chunky areas of the footage that's being filmed so for this test. I grabbed one of my lights that I use for filming. Actually, this one right here and I had the light shining at the wall on the other side of the room and that light bounced off that wall over to where everything was set up. I, don't know if he can totally grass how dark it was in the room and how much of a difference in exposure was needed for one side to the other, but the chart in the top left shows you the difference in exposure settings with a difference of eight point. Eight three Eva, that's crazy.

One thing to look at when we're looking at this test is the color temperature you'll be able to see that the pixel Excel has a bluer cooler, color temperature than the pixel 2xl, which has a warmer color temperature because of the low-light. Both images are super noisy with visible chunkiness throughout the pixel.2Xl, however, does retain more detail if you look at the fake plant and seems to have more noise reduction, because the noise seems to be more smoothed out, I will have percent bounce light. The pixel XL does seem to catch up in detail to the pixel 2xl, but still lags behind overall I'm impressed that both cameras are able to adjust their settings. So the exposure for brightness is relatively the same under harsh conditions. This next test is dynamic range, and it's essentially the camera's ability to expose things in the brights and then the dark.

Well, oftentimes cameras can't do this really well, and the brights will look really blown out or overexposed kind of like this, where the dark scan end up looking really crushed, or you lose a lot of detail in the shadows granted. This is a really nice camera, and it handles a light fairly well, so it won't look as bad. Typically, a camera will try to find a balance between both at the beginning, we'll see the video first without me, tapping on any area to focus it's the automatic settings. First I want you to look at the lens and the window Co and see how much detail is there in the dark areas. We see that the camera chooses to expose in a way that keeps the image from overexposing.

So you can see the blue in the sky once I tap on the Android figure. We will look at the sky here, the pixel to excel routines, more detail there, which he gets you at the cable lines. Hanging from the pole when I tap on the lens on the window. Seal we can see the light. Pull itself is a little more narrow on the pixel X, all within the pixel 2xl.

So once again the highlights are retained. It better and the camera chooses to expose in a way that keeps the image from overexposing. So you can see the blue in the sky. Now, let's check out the focus speed. Oddly focus speed was inconsistent on both phones when the pixel 2xl locks on well it locks on faster than pixel Excel.

However, both seem to have an issue at different times with hunting or staying on. Another object. The pixel to excel seemed to do this more than the pixel Excel a tip to help the camera focus better is to find an area that has more detail. In contrast, like the line that's between the head and the body of the Android figure. Now, let's check out the detail.

Both cameras capture detail incredibly well. The text and cloth on the Google home in the shot is nice and detailed in the grid test. They are both great. The pixel to Excel has a slight bit of warping, but you probably won't notice that you have to look really closely to see it, and this last one reveals that the pixel excel has a wider field of view than the pixel to excel, so it'll capture more at a closer distance than the pixel to excel, and both phones record at the same resolution of 3840 by 2160. Now, let's check out slow motion in slow motion is a lot of fun.

All of them offer the ability to record at 120 frames per second or 240 frames per second, which is four times slower or eight times slower, respectively, in 120 frames per second test. Pixel to excel seems to retain more detail, color and contrast than the pixel excel. The same thing can be seen in the 240 frames per second version. They added detail, color and contrast allows you to see some details of the water splash that you cannot see as well on the pixel excel. Now, let's check out the stabilisation stabilisation can be really cool because it can provide a cinematic look to your images or just simply even out some of the bumps you have when you're walking or moving around.

One thing to note when were looking at this is that the pixel excel only has an is or electronic image stabilisation. This is all software and often gives a more artificial look for most video editing programs, which means it isn't generally preferred the pixel to excel, has both OS or optical image, stabilisation, which is hardware that suspends the lens and moves that around as needed, as well as electronic image stabilisation. So we can see that the stabilisation can allow for smooth and cinematic panning. One thing that you'll notice is that the pixel excel will lose focus at times during this, and the stabilisation can have a more jelly laggy response to it, which is kind of weird. Now, let's check out the lens flare, a lens flare occurs when a bright light source like the Sun, hits the glass lens elements of the camera.

This can create some distracting flares to your image and desaturate the color of it as well. This isn't an entirely bad because sometimes it can be used artistically for this test. I set both phones on a tripod, and then I just turned on the flashlight on my phone and moved it around to see how bad it can get. As many of you know, the original pixel XL has an areas lens flare, because the back area is just glass. The pixel 2xl remedies this problem by putting a ring around the camera lens, and we can see that that ring really does help reduce the distracting lens flare and there's a way to address this lens flare in practical use.

You just flag your lens. This is essentially mimicking the lens hood on some expensive camera lenses. It blocks out the Sun, so what you can do when you're filming you can place your hand around the lens so that it blocks out the sunlight and now, let's check out the audio. This is what video looks like on the front facing cameras as well as how it sounds. So here is the pixel 1 audio, and then here is the pixel 2 audio.

What's interesting is that the stock camera app seems to have lost its ability to utilize external microphones, and I'm, not sure why Google removed that it used to work on the pixel, but it doesn't anymore, hmm, so we're your thoughts. What are your observations in this test? The pixel XL didn't really come out ahead of the pixel to excel in really any of the test that I noticed overall, the pixel to excel performed better than the original pixel excel in almost every single area, but maybe you know something that I did if he did go ahead and leave some comments down below and while you're at it. If you found this video interesting, give us a thumbs up and if you haven't subscribed to android police channel already go ahead and do that watching to keep up with more android police videos go ahead and check out some videos off to the side and if you'd like to watch more videos from me, go ahead and click on that image of me on the page as well.
