Pixel 2 XL Review - Much Better Than I Thought

Hi everyone Aaron here for Solo Tech- and this is the Google Pixel to excel I, have both colors here. This is called just black and this is black and white and the black and white one was a little more difficult to get. This one was sent to me by Verizon to review so, but actually using this for a couple of weeks now, and then this is my personal phone and this one I actually ordered the day. They were available to order, and I ordered it before the keynote ended, and it still took me a month to get, so I don't know if they were just behind or whatever, but it took me a long time to get this phone, but I like this color combination and the price on this phone is a little expensive. Obviously we have the 64 gigabyte model comes in at eight hundred and forty-nine dollars and another $100 for the 128 gigabyte model, they're, not expandable. As far as the storage goes now, the big thing about this is you get Google's partnership, design with HTC or LG, depending on which one you get.

If you get the XL its LG and I, really like the design of this phone, so the first thing we'll talk about is the design. Now the design is one of my favorite smartphones of the year. Quite honestly, it has a playful look to it. So it's not just black and white. It's got this little orange creamily like button and I just think it looks really nice.

It's kind of a playful touch that you just don't see anymore, maybe like with Apple design. For example, you see more of a sterile design as opposed to a playful design like they used to have, and I think this design just stands out and looks perfect. In fact, I had someone actually recognize this. That I wouldn't expect just in a normal drive through that asked me, is that the Google Pixel too, and I said yes, it is, and they said, oh cool, so I thought that was pretty neat that someone actually recognized the phone now the phone itself is plastic coated over aluminum on the back this parts, glass for the antennas. Of course, we have the camera, which is a 12 point.

Two megapixel camera and the camera is the best thing about the phone, quite honestly, and we'll come back to that. But it's got an F 1.8 lens with a dual LED flash. Of course, you've got your fingerprint reader on the back little g4 Google logo and then the bottom. You have a USB charge port and that's all you get you don't get wireless charging now on the front. You've got the display dual speakers forward facing camera, and it's all glass and pretty nice, and now this is a plastic coating and in fact it's chipped already, so I'd recommend a case.

I, don't know how this happened. It must have happened today, actually right before the review. I picked it up and noticed it and I have no idea how that happened. This one hasn't chipped at all, and I haven't been using them with a case or anything I just picked it up after I was charging it, and that was missing. So I don't know what that's all about, but unfortunately it's like that, and I would recommend a case.

Unfortunately, you're going to have to cover this up, but either way you'll want to protect it, and I've used them, but apparently the pixel to case has gotten pretty high praise for the XL and the pixel two with the cloth case. So I may pick one of those up now, aside from the design, it's ip67 water and dust resistant, so you've got that, and then you have the display, which is a P OLED display, and you're, either going to like this or hate this. But it's a plastic OLED is what that means or organic light-emitting diode, it's six inches diagonally, it's curved around the edges. If you haven't noticed that it's kind of an odd design as far as the bezels go, but it's curved around the edges, I think it looks pretty good, it's 1440 by 2880, and it's 537 pixels per inch. So it looks pretty good most of the time, but sometimes it's grainy, whereas you're in certain applications, and it looks okay, other applications look grainy and then of course there's that off-axis blue shift now I did a video comparing the off-axis blue shift in this with a galaxy s, 8 plus and an iPhone 10, and it's not as bad as you would think.

So, if I show you here, you can see it, but you can really see it if you're on a white surface. So if you're here you'll see that off-axis blue shift a little now aside from the off-axis blue shift, that's there, and you can't really do anything about Google recently updated this with an update. So if you go into display advanced, and then you go down to colors under colors, you've got natural boosted and saturated I personally, like the normal natural RGB color profile. That's on here, even though the display is capable of more saturated, colors I, don't really care for super saturated colors. Like you see right now, if I go back, you can go to natural and I think it looks better to me anyway.

Go back to boost it, boosted is only slightly more vibrant, but I think natural looks best. That's just me. Some people are going to hate that, but that's more reminiscent of an iPhone, but you won't get super vibrant with vibrant colors when you're actually doing anything on it. So it may be a little dull for most people. Now, if you can get past to the display in the blue shift, which I find isn't too much of an big deal really when you're using it because most of the time you're just looking at it straight on, if I tilt it out of the way, then you might see it some, but most of the time you look past it and I don't know, some people that own these- and they said it's not a big deal to them after they've used it for a little.

They basically don't see why it's such a big issue. So there's that now you have the forward-facing speaker, which is something I love on this phone I. Don't know why more manufacturers don't do that Apple sort of does that, but this phone is much better as far as being able to hear true stereo sound when you're playing a video, so it goes pretty loud. You can see it looks pretty normal with the black bars on the left and the right based on its aspect, ratio. If I turn it up, you can hear the speakers they do get pretty loud.

They do get loud enough that they do distort a little. So if you're using them, they might distort at very high volumes. Otherwise, they sound pretty good. They don't sound spectacular, they don't have a lot of bass, but they sound decent and most people, I think will appreciate the stereo speakers better than not having stereo. So that part is really very nice on this phone.

The next thing is battery life. The battery in this is thirty-five hundred and twenty William hours and I found it. First, it didn't get very long battery life, but then, as I used it and found that I was using a couple different apps. That seemed to be using a lot of battery once I got rid of those apps. I can easily get through a day on both of these devices.

So if I go into either one of these phones, no matter how I'm using it, this is kind of live wallpaper, verse, a very black wallpaper that should save some more battery I easily get through a day and when I want to charge it, you can charge 50% of it in about 30 minutes. So it charges very fast if you use the stock charger, although you don't get that wireless charging, never does this feel slow. It's got a Snapdragon 835 adrenal, 540, GPU and 4 gigabytes of RAM, it's pretty usual for flagship phones these days. So if we'll go into this game, it's not a very intensive game, but you can see it loads quickly. There are no issues there and if we want to switch back, it's nice and fast go back home and go into whatever we're doing next so go into the Play Store.

And then we can do the normal split screen thing. If it allows you to- or you can sometimes do, picture and picture depending on what you've got, get a movie playing, and you want to use picture and picture or something like that, it will let you do that now. Of course, we have to talk about the camera. The camera is one of the best cameras on the market, if not the best camera on the market. In fact, I would say it's better than any camera out there and the pictures kind of speak for themselves.

In fact, I've been using this everyday like I, said, and I take all the pictures with this, no matter what phone I'm carrying if I, actually care about the picture, the front-facing portrait mode is perfect and the rear camera it just can't really be beat. In my opinion, not yet anyway, and with the upcoming Android 8.1 you'll get the new internal chip. That's inside this phone that should even help that better with HDR photos and things like that. There's a dedicated chip on here that Google made to help you with those photos. So here's the front-facing camera one of the biggest complaints I.

Think if any that I have about this camera is the microphone quality is not quite great now, supposedly in the next update, it will be much better. The front front-facing camera is not stabilized either, as you can see, I'm using the camera on the back for video, we're in 4k, and I wanted to show you what the quality was like stabilization is pretty amazing, and it's probably better than an iPhone. As far as stabilization goes, so I don't know that there's much more to go into other than I think it's a great phone now other than the display. If the display is a huge issue for you, the price of this is an issue for you. There are other options out there that are perfect.

The one plus 5t from what I understand I haven't used, one of those also the original pixels, a great phone still and there are other options from many manufacturers, the essential phone's pretty inexpensive. But if your camera is the number one priority, and you like this display- or this doesn't bother- you get the two XL. If the display bothers you get the pixel, two I think you'll be happy with it. So that's it for the pixel to. Let me know your thoughts about it in the comments below.
