OnePlus 8T vs Google Pixel 5

- What's up guys, Saf here on SuperSaf TV. And it's not often that the embargo for two devices lifts not only in the same day but at the very same time. But that is exactly what's happened today with the Google Pixel 5 5G and the OnePlus 8T, which is also 5G but they've not put it on the box. Anyway, I thought instead of covering these individually let's just put them both in one video and then we can look at all of the key differences, break them down SuperSaf Style, and also look at some camera samples. So let's get straight to it. So firstly, let's take a look at the displays.

They do look very similar. We've got flat displays with small bezels and a punch out on the left hand side. The OnePlus has slightly thinner bezels on the left and right. And it also has a slightly smaller punch out for the front facing camera. It also has a higher refresh rate.

So the pixel has 90Hz the OnePlus 8T has a 120 Hz refresh rate which does feel smoother. And from what I can see as well it is slightly brighter compared to the pixel. So I would give the overall edge for the display to the OnePlus 8T. Now of course another obvious difference between these two is the size. The OnePlus 8T does have a larger 6.55 inch display versus the six inch display of the Pixel. Now personally, I do prefer larger displays.

I consume a lot of media, do lots of browsing on my smartphone. So I do like a larger display. So I would lean more towards the OnePlus 8T. But an advantage that you get on the Pixel is that it is much easier to hold and use with one hand, thanks to that smaller display. So this is something that you might prefer, now while we are on the displays.

Let's also talk about the fingerprint scanners because the OnePlus 8T does have an in-display fingerprint scanner. The Pixel actually has a fingerprint scanner on the back. Now in terms of speed, they are both very very fast. So I don't think you can go wrong with either of these, I think it will come down to your personal preference. The OnePlus arguably more convenient because it is at the front.

So you could unlock it while it was down on the table. Whereas the Pixel, you do have to pick it up. However, with the OnePlus you do have to wake the display to be able to access the fingerprint scanner. Whereas on the Pixel it's always awake. So it could be in your pocket and you could just tap your fingerprint.

And as soon as it's out of your pocket it is unlocked. Honestly speaking, I don't mind either of these. I think, I know I keeps saying it. But it's going to come down to personal preference. Now let's talk a little bit about the build and design.

So the Pixel of course, the much more compact device it also weighs a little bit less compared to the OnePlus 8T. So that definitely might be a factor that you want to consider. And we do have different builds. Both are actually very premium. We do have a combination of metal and glass.

The OnePlus 8T has a metal frame with glass panels on the front and back, and on the front we have Gorilla Glass five. The Pixel on the other hand has Gorilla Glass six for the display. And we've got an aluminum enclosure which is coated in this material, which it does give it a lot more grip. This material you're not going to get any fingerprints on. It does feel really nice.

This is the Sort of Sage, there is also a Just Black version available which will probably attract a little bit more when it comes to fingerprints. But this version of the OnePlus 8T the Aquamarine Green, does have a glossy back. Now it's got a very interesting look. So depending on the way the light hits it it does give you a little bit of a two tone color. And I do like the look of this, but I mean, it's glossy so it is going to attract fingerprints more compared to the pixel.

I believe the other version, which is the Lunar Silver which does have more of a matte finish. Now in either case, if you do want to mix things up and give you device the unique look then I would recommend a skin from our channel sponsor dbrand. You've got so many options on there. I tend to kind of have a different favorite each time. I really do like the matrix skin personally it gives you a bit more grip and it looks really really cool.

I'll be leaving a link to dbrand down in the description below. Now the Pixel 5 does have an official IPX8 Water Resistant rating. The OnePlus 8T does not. However OnePlus do say that it is water tight and it should be fine to use in things like the rain. However, there is no official rating.

I believe this costs more to be able to get that rating on the OnePlus 8T so they haven't included it. So if that doesn't matter you the Pixel does have that rating. Now Let's talk about the cameras. So of course this isn't a detailed SuperSaf Style camera comparison. I just would not have the time to do this but I have gone out and tested these out and taken lots of shots.

Front facing cameras, the OnePlus does have a higher resolution but remember pixels are not everything. In my experience the Pixel just takes better selfies. The colors are more accurate. OnePlus devices, I've said this many many times before, but they just tend to overexpose make you look fairer than you actually are. I'm definitely not a fan of this.

So I would pick the Pixel hands down. I might be a little bit biased but I generally do like selfies from Pixel devices. Very contrast the very sharp, great colors and dynamic range. And for the rear facing cameras it's actually quite interesting because we've got two real facing cameras on the Pixel. And we've got four rear facing cameras on the OnePlus 8T.

But remember numbers are not everything. So we've got a high resolution on the OnePlus 8T. But once again, it's not just about the megapixels. Generally you will be shooting at 12 megapixels which really puts it head to head with the Pixel. And then we also have an ultra wide camera on both devices which lets you get in a lot more into your shots.

Now in my experience of using both of these for the past week I think both take great shots in good lights. We've got lots of detail. The OnePlus 8T does have a wider field of view for the ultra wide camera, which I do like. But generally I did find myself preferring pictures from the Pixel. Overall in tricky situations did give better dynamic range night mode as well was better in my experience colors were more accurate on shots on the ultra-wide camera in low light were definitely much better on the Pixel.

Now the OnePlus 8T does have two additional cameras. There's a five megapixel macro camera as well as a black and white camera. And this seems to be a trend from OnePlus they try to throw in extra cameras, which really aren't that useful, just so they can say it's a quad camera. We've seen this many times before the five megapixel camera is higher than the two megapixel camera, which myself, Mark has and many others. Completely roasted on the OnePlus Nord.

So I think OnePlus we're like, okay fine, we'll give you five megapixels. But even with the five megapixels, it's just not great. I would rather just take an image with the primary camera and then crop in later. And I think you'll get a better shot overall, having that small sensor in my opinion is not worth it. Now the OnePlus 8Pro on the other hand has an excellent macro camera.

And that is because he actually uses the 16 megapixel ultra-wide camera to focus in close. I think OnePlus maybe haven't included this on the OnePlus 8T because they kind of want to have a bit more separation with this and the OnePlus 8Pro. I don't know, personally I won't be using this five megapixel macro camera as for the black and white camera. It's supposed to help get you some mono images. Again, this is not something I found myself using much.

Just applying a filter generally will get you similar results. It's just not my cup of tea personally. So overall I would give the edge for photos to the Pixel 5. Now let's move on to the performance. Where it's actually a very easy win for the 8T.

It does have Qualcomm's flagship chipset the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865. Whereas the Pixel has the capable but not as powerful 765 5G. The OnePlus 8T also has an option of 12 gigabytes of Ram. And it's also using faster UFS 3.1 storage. So generally speaking for speed of performance, although on your day to day, it's going to be absolutely fine.

I've had no issues with either of these, when it does come to more intensive tasks then the OnePlus is just going to be better. In addition to that, the 120 Hz display also makes things feel that little bit faster. Again, there's not a huge difference on your day to day. And we do get Android 11 out of the box with both of these devices, which is absolutely great. Maybe this is the reason why the embargo lifted at the same time.

Who knows? Now the Pixel of course you are going to be getting that complete stock Android experience. But on the OnePlus you get Oxygen OS which I really like. It's very clean and it adds some very useful and additional features. Oxygen OS 11 let's be honest has taken a lot of inspiration from One UI. In that it has been made to be a little bit easy to use in one hand we've got these big heading sections like we have on One UI.

I'm definitely welcoming this everything just feels very fast and smooth on the software side of things. I really don't think you can go wrong with either of these. It will come down to your personal preference but you will be getting guaranteed updates longer on the Pixel compared to the OnePlus. Three years versus two years on the OnePlus although security updates you will be getting for three years on the OnePlus. Now although both devices do support 5G the OnePlus does have a dual SIM card slot.

So you can have two SIMs active at the same time. This is something that you don't have on the Pixel. Looking at and speakers now. So both do have stereo speakers and generally they sound really good. We've got one in the earpiece and one bottom firing.

Now I am not an audio expert, but my friend (indistinct) is, and having a chat with him in his experience and his detailed testing with his ASMR mic. He did say that he preferred the OnePlus 8T. Now let's talk about the battery. So the OnePlus does have a larger battery size compared to the Pixel. However, it does have a higher refresh rates on it's also a larger display and I've only had these devices for about week in which the battery life has actually been good on both, but I can't give you anything too extensive.

What I can tell you about is the charging. The OnePlus 8T has Warp Charge 65. So 65 watt charging. This is actually split across the two batteries. So it's charging both the batteries at the same time.

So that way you get that super fast charging 100% in around 39 minutes. The Pixel has 18 watt charging, which is much much slower. However, the Pixel does support wireless charging which the OnePlus 8T does not. As well as that the Pixel also supports a reverse wireless charging where you'll be able to use the Pixel to charge another device may be some ear buds wirelessly. So I guess it comes down to speed versus convenience.

Again this is something that we've talked about many times before. I'm somebody who does prefer wireless charging over fast charging because I drop my smartphone on my wireless charger before I go to bed, I wake up and it's fully charged. That's just kind of my routine, but some of you might prefer that very fast top up that you get with 65 watt charging. And finally, let's talk about the price. So if we look at the base model.

Eight gigabytes of Ram with 128 gigabytes of storage. In the UK the OnePlus is actually coming in 50 pounds cheaper compared to the Pixel. Now in the U. S. as far as I'm aware right now there is only going to be the 256 gigabyte option of the OnePlus 8T.

And that is going to be coming in $50 more compared to the Google Pixel 5. However you will be getting double the storage as well as more Ram. So what does that mean? Well, with the OnePlus you are getting a better overall display a better overall performance with faster charging. But in the Pixel you are getting overall better cameras in my opinion. And you're also getting things like wireless charging and reverse wireless charging which you don't have on the OnePlus 8T.

So it is going to be a tough decision as always but hopefully this video has helped you make that decision. By breaking down all of the differences, which is your pick. Is it the Google Pixel 5? Or is it the OnePlus 8T? Do drop me a comment below and let me know your thoughts. I hope you enjoyed this video and found it useful if you did then do hit that thumbs up button for me. And if you haven't already then be sure to subscribe and hit that bell icon.

There's going to be lots more SuperSaf Style coverage. I am trying to work on a camera comparison of the Pixel 5 versus the S20 FE, which is very highly requested. So that should hopefully be coming soon, as well as lots of iPhone coverage, because that's around the corner. So you won't want to miss any of it. Thanks for watching this is Saf on SuperSaf TV and I'll see you next time.

Now we take a break 'cause I forgot to charge the bloody battery. (upbeat music).
