So I've had the new 2020 m1 Apple Macbook air, for a few hours now, and let me tell you, it is a great piece of machinery. If you want to see me unbox it I'll link that video in the top right-hand corner right now, if you want to click on it, but other than that in this video, I wanted to do a quick speed comparison between the previous generation of the MacBook and the most recent one now bear in mind. The MacBook in this video is actually a MacBook Pro, and it's from 2017. It is the base model, and it is also running an older version of macOS, but the main difference we want to see in this video is the startup speed, opening up a few typical programs and also using those programs such as safari or chrome. So I think one of the first things people want to see is if the screen wake time is any different from the older style. Mac books apple has advertised this pretty heavily in their marketing material.
So, let's see if it stands true now I've had these two macs closed for about two minutes. So this should be a good indicator of how quick they are to turn their screens on. So you can see pretty much straight away. The one on the left, which is the new m1 MacBook Air, was a lot quicker than the older style. So, let's just do it again, a bit quicker this time, and we'll see if there's much of a difference, so I'll only be leaving them shut for about 10 seconds this time, whereas the last time was about two minutes, and you can see there is's really no difference.
So I think the main difference here is going to be when the mac has been closed for a minute or two and the screen actually turns off. You definitely do see a significant difference with the new m1 MacBook. So now, let's move on to the next test, which is shut down and restart. So what I'll do is I'll actually shut them both down at the same time, and we'll see if there's much of a difference now bear in mind, I've only got two hands, so let's just shut it down when the timer reaches five seconds all right, so it looks like they've both turned off at pretty much the exact time. So what we'll do now is we'll turn them on.
At the same time, again, I'm just going to start it when the timer hits five seconds looks like the new MacBook is winning right off the bat. Oh, no okay looks like the old one has just started up straight away. Okay, that's very weird! I did not expect that at all. Let me just shut them down and do it one more time. Okay, again, we'll wait till the time hits five seconds, and we'll turn them on.
So it looks like the new MacBook gets to post quicker, but the old MacBook is actually quicker to get to the login screen, which is very strange. Okay, let me put my password in, and then we'll actually get to the login screen, we'll see. If that's much of a difference, okay, so the MacBook Air has logged in pretty much straight away. The MacBook, the previous generation MacBook is struggling a little bear in mind. It is an older version of OS and also has more files and history than the new mac there.
We go and they're both finished. So what we'll do now is we'll actually do a restart test again at five seconds, we'll restart okay, so the MacBook Air has posted, so has the MacBook Pro and once again, MacBook Pro is quicker to get to the login screen. Okay, next we're going to see some commonly used apps and see how quickly they load between the two machines. First, we'll try the safari app and that's pretty quick from macOS Big Sur. That's a lot quicker than the old MacBook Pro.
Let's try that again. Okay, three, two one go! That's a lot quicker! That's almost three to four times quicker: let's try, chrome three, two one: okay, so it's quicker to load on the old MacBook, which makes sense, because chrome likely isn't optimized for the new arm based processor on the new MacBook Air. So, let's try that again, three two one still quicker and what we'll try doing is some YouTube tabs. Okay. So let's try opening up some tabs on chrome and there's not a huge difference here.
This is mainly going to be dependent on your internet. Although you can see that the old MacBook is working a lot better and a lot quicker, these haven't even loaded. Yet that is a huge difference. Again, don't pay too much attention to this. This is a brand-new mac brand new operating system brand-new processor.
So these issues are probably going to be resolved in the first couple of weeks. So, let's close chrome now we'll try da Vinci resolve. Now I did get an error message when installing da Vinci, which I'll put up on the screen now basically, basically all it means is that this particular version da Vinci resolve is optimized for x86 versions of macOS, so obviously optimized for this one and not this one. So let's see how quickly it starts now, I will also have a video rendering and editing in da Vinci resolve and also Adobe Premiere, which will be on my channel shortly. So three two one okay seems to be loading quicker on the m1 apple there.
It goes on the MacBook Pro, and it's done on the m1 MacBook Air, and it looks like it's going to beat the old version of the mac books by quite a big margin and there it finally goes so, as you can see. So, as you can see, the new m1 MacBook is actually faster than the older versions of the MacBook, but only in some specific cases so launching optimized apps such as safari works. Fine, but unoptimized apps such as Google Chrome, may not work as well, and then you have the video editing programs like da Vinci resolve, which can be usually quite slow to start up. That was actually extremely fast on the MacBook Air. So I hope you enjoyed this really brief video again, I'm just uploading videos every few hours on little topics, so these aren't going to be super in-depth.
If you want to watch more of these videos subscribe to me because I'll be uploading them as soon as I can and after a few days, I will do a full review on the brand new 2020 m1 MacBook Pro. But apart from that, thank you guys for watching, and I will catch you in the next one.
