iPhone XR Review - The BEST iPhone EVER? By GregsGadgets

Hey, what's going on everyone Greg here, and I've, been using the iPhone 10 R for the past two weeks here, trying to formulate an opinion on it and I have been enjoying the experience so far because it gets onto the iPhone 10 R is a very interesting phone. It takes what Apple's flagship phone last year was the iPhone 10 and bundles it into a cheaper package, but also makes a lot of improvements along the way. So, instead of stainless steel sides, you get now aluminum sides and instead of a dual lens camera system on the back, you get a single lens camera system, and probably the biggest change to this device is that it now has an LCD screen on it instead of an O LED screen. But it still maintains that bezel, this iPhone 10 design that we are all familiar with last year and now appears on the iPhone 10 s and iPhone 10s Maddox. It's also interesting for Apple to release his phone because it's almost like, they really have three flagship phones. This year the iPhone 10 R, the iPhone 10 s and the iPhone 10 S Mac.

So the starting price for the iPhone 10 R is 750 dollars for a 64 gigabyte model, and you can bump that up to 128 gigabytes for only $50 more, that is the model I recommend you go with. If you're going to go with the iPhone 10 R, you can also spend $100 more and get a 256 gigabyte, iPhone 10 R, which is still going to come out cheaper than the entry-level iPhone 10 s, the iPhone 10 R is also a glass back, so it allows for wireless charging up to 7.5 watts, the water resistance isn't as good as the iPhone 10s or iPhone 10s max it's at ip67, as opposed to ip68, but in my day-to-day use that really doesn't bother. Me I'm not going swimming with my phone ever and if it's enough to survive a splash in the rain, that's usually more than enough. For me, the display is what Apple calls a liquid Retina display. It has a resolution of 1792 by 828.

This roughly translates to 326 pixels per inch. The same resolution found on previous iPhones and the only thing you really need to know about that. Pixel density is that it's high enough that at normal viewing distance you're not going to be seeing individual pixels, it's also apples, brightest, LCD, they've ever put into a phone at 625 nits, and because of that, this phone is great to use outside. You can still see all of your content on your phone, even in bright sunlight screen is extremely color. Accurate, as well.

I saw a video done by Austin Evans, and he had someone on there who actually said this is more color accurate than the O LED panels found on the iPhone 10 s and iPhone tennis max now side by side between the iPhone, 10s and iPhone 10s max I find it a little hard to notice the difference, especially on the home screen, the iPhone, 10s and iPhone 10s max both have a LED screen, which means that the black level on them is perfect. This is because Sleds screens can turn off individual pixels, while the LCD screen needs to provide a backlight to it. Also notice the bezels going around the entire iPhone 10 are a little. Thicker assist you house, the LED backlighting panel, that Apple needs for an LCD, but it's still a modern achievement that Apple was actually able to bend the LCD back into the phone one of the bigger areas where you'll notice. This difference is, if you watch HDR video on the iPhone 10 s max as opposed to the iPhone 10 R you'll get more dynamic range on either the iPhone 10 s or iPhone 10 s max, as opposed to the iPhone 10 R, but an overall day-to-day use.

This screen is perfect. I, like that at six point. One inches I like that. It's really color accurate I can't see the pixels at a normal viewing distance. So I'm not gonna, be holding my phone up like this.

That's just really unrealistic. No one is doing that, and you would really have to look hard hold. These phones side-by-side look for individual things on each screen to really notice some differences because of the 6.1-inch screen size. It's an in-between size between the iPhone 10 s and iPhone 10 s Mac. But it's almost like the Goldilocks phone.

The iPhone tennis is a little too small. The iPhone 10 s max is a little too big and this iPhone 10 R just fits right in the center. It feels really nice in the hands. Has a really nice premium build quality? Now there are some technologies in the display that you are losing out. Besides picture quality on the iPhone 10 R, and that would be Apple's 3d touch the iPhone 10 R does not support 3d touch.

It supports what Apple calls haptic touch, which is basically a long press on the screen of the phone which will give you a vibration, haptic feedback, so you can use this in control center. You can use this on the space bar on the keyboard and in few other areas like the lock screen to activate the flashlight or the camera. The haptics feel perfect, although I must admit I do miss 3d touch on the iPhone 10. Are it just takes a little longer to access those short actions? You also get these same exact gestures that are found on the iPhone, 10 and iPhone 10s. So, just a quick rundown on those you can now swipe up to go home.

You can now swipe and hold up to get into the multitasking view you pull down from the right to get into the control center, and you can swipe the bottom of the bar to quickly change between apps, really not much to say here about the new gesture system, other than I, really like it, and if you're coming from an older phone like an iPhone, 6, 7 or 8, which is most likely the target customer for the iPhone 10 are these will be new gestures to you all. The gestures feel really fluid. There's no translation difference between going from an LED screen to the LCD screen, just an overall nice experience. Now another feature found on the iPhone, 10s and 10s Macs are the new improved speakers and those make their way to the iPhone 10 R as well get louder volumes without much distortion. These speakers get pretty loud.

They sound perfect, and you get a wider stereo separation between the top and bottom speakers, also making its way to the iPhone 10 R is phase ID, and it's the same exact face ID found on the iPhone 10 s, so it works up to 15% faster and that little of speed difference does make a nice improvement. So it's really fast to unlock your phone and just get into your apps I. Also really like the way face. I'd works as opposed to touch ID. So if you have notifications on your lock screen, you can set those to hide and as soon as face ID sees your face.

It'll automatically show you the notification, so you don't have to worry about someone peeking at your lock screen, and you also get this attention to wear features. So if an alarm goes off in your face, it'll quickly silence the alarm as you're. Looking at your phone really happy to see, face ID come to the iPhone 10 R. It really makes this feel like an iPhone 10 s experience. This also comes with apples, a 12 Bionic chip, which is partly why the face ID system works so quickly now, so the 12 chip just gives you some really amazing performance on the iPhone 10 R.

This is a chip, that's faster than some laptops now, but although it looks good on paper, there aren't too many apps that are taking full advantage of this chip. Quite yet, the most intensive things I'm running on my phone are probably civilization 6 and that runs really well on the iPhone.10 are really liking the gameplay, that's on it. Everything feels really smooth. The resolution is good on it. Another more intensive, app I use on the iPhone is Pixelate, and that runs really well on the iPhone.

There's really no slowdowns with that a 12 chip, but again I, don't think anything. That's currently on the App Store is really pushing this chip to the limit, but it is nice to have just to future-proof your phone, so no slowdowns at all when using this phone, even when swiping between apps swiping really quickly between the home screens I just can't get this phone to slow down, but again, I. Don't think, there's software out here really taking advantage of it, which maybe there will be in the future, especially if there is some more augmented reality. Software that's coming out, although I have been disappointed with the direction of augmented reality. When the iPhone 10 came out, I thought there would be more AR apps in there are today, but I'm.

Finding myself disappointed by the lack of quality AR apps available in the App Store I should mention that the iPhone 10 are also only has three gigabytes of RAM, as opposed to the iPhone.10's is four gigabytes. That's also not a major difference, because the iPhone 10 AR has to push a lot less pixels in the iPhone 10s or 10s max. So you should get about the same performance and RAM management in the iPhone 10 r. That's what I've been finding I haven't had apps closed on me in the background, while I'm switching between them, I'm not noticing any real-world difference, you're, also not getting as fast as LTE with the iPhone 10 are the iPhone 10s and iPhone 10s Macs both have gigabit LTE but in day to day, use I haven't noticed any speed. Differences between the two phones- I, don't think gigabit LTE is available in my area.

So, so far it hasn't made any difference, and even if you are getting those max speeds, I think most people don't download big files on their phones, especially considering the bandwidth caps were limited to so really not a major difference here. A turn life on the iPhone 10 are is rated as one of the best battery life for the current iPhones. I find this to be pretty much true. The iPhone 10 R has the best battery life on any iPhone I've ever used I'm getting around a half hour to an hour more than on my iPhone 10 s. Max and I am a heavy iPhone user when I'm using my iPhone throughout the day, I'm constantly listening to audio I'm constantly watching video.

So if any phone can get me through a day, that is a big achievement and if I'm, on a lighter day, I think I could probably stretch this phone out to two days without charging it, but I usually just charge overnight anyway, just to be safe. But let's dive in more of this camera. That's a very important part when you're purchasing a smartphone and the iPhone 10 are comes with one of the best cameras available. So the iPhone 10 R comes with Apple's smart HDR system, which basically means that it's merging a bunch of different exposures together to create one single image means that in challenging lighting situations, especially when the Sun is nice and bright, and you take a picture you're not going to get blown out highlights, especially in the sky. It kind of creates an even exposure all around the picture, and it's really, really impressive to the point where you can get the Sun in the picture and the sky is not blown out at all.

The Sun is white in the picture, but the rest of the sky is bright. Blue. You get some really nice dynamic range with these photos. I really like the white, the iPhone 10 R, takes pictures o light. Photography is improved over the 10, although sometimes I'm, not sure.

If I, like the effect that the support HDR gives off in certain lighting situations. Now, it is lacking that second zoom lens found on the iPhone 10 s, but there are some instances where maybe having a single end system is better now losing that second lens does mean you're, losing a two-time zoom option, but a lot of the times, especially in lower light, the iPhone, 10s and iPhone tennis Macs will not use that zoom lens. Even if you press on that 2x button, it will zoom in the regular camera, because that regular camera has a wider aperture, which means it can take better low-light shots. So, even if you think you're going to be missing the benefit of that zoom lens in some situations, you might be fooled into thinking: you're, taking a zoomed up shot on the iPhone 10 s when in reality you could just get by with that regular lens on the iPhone 10 R, although when the lighting conditions are good, it is nice to have that zoom on the iPhone 10 s max, especially if you want to take a picture of something far away. If there's an animal you don't want to get too close, it'll run away from you so having that is a nice option on the iPhone 10 s max.

Now, let's talk about portrait mode. One of the new features to this single lens system is an artificial portrait mode on the iPhone 10 arm now, Apple first did this portrait mode with the iPhone 7 plus, and it's found its way on the iPhone 8, plus the iPhone 10, and now the iPhone 10s and 10s max the iPhone 10 R. Does that a little differently? It only does portrait mode with a single lens, and while you might be inclined to think that the single lens produces the worst portrait mode shots, that's not the case in all situations. For example, take a look at these two portrait shots I shot in a lower lighting situation on both the iPhone 10 R and iPhone 10 s max, because the iPhone 10 R is using the single lens wider aperture, which allows it to get in more light and a wider angle field of view. The portrait mode on that actually has more light than the iPhone 10 s max and in a lower lighting situation.

I prefer the way portrait mode looks on the iPhone 10 R I, also like the ability that it gives you a wider angle field of view on the portrait mode, which you cannot do on the iPhone 10 s max. So in some respects the camera system is better on the iPhone 10 arm. I'm, not sure why Apple limits this on the iPhone 10 s max, it should be able to do with exactly the same portrait mode found on the iPhone 10 R. Now, if you look in both of these photos, you'll notice that the 10 s max does have a better both effect, but I do prefer the way the lower light situation looks on the iPhone 10 R. This isn't a peg against the iPhone 10 R.

It's a peg against the iPhone 10 s max I hope that Apple will allow a toggle on the 10 s max to switch between that artificial portrait mode and allow us to get wider angle portrait mode shots now, unlike the 10 s, max you're not going to be getting any OF studio lighting effect. So if you're, a big fan of the many stage, lighting effect like I, am on the iPhone 10 s max you're, going to be sorely disappointed in the iPhone 10 RS portrait mode. I also love the adjustable aperture setting that Apple implemented into the stock camera app with the iPhone 10 R. So you can quickly slide between them to either focus more on the background or give that background more of a blur in portrait mode. Overall, portrait mode is perfect on the iPhone 10 R.

It produces a different effect than the iPhone 10 s max for sure, and if you have ample lighting I think the iPhone 10 s max beats it. But if you want wider angle, portrait mode shots if you're taking portrait mode shots and lower lighting the iPhone 10 R comes out ahead in this category. Now the iPhone 10 R does get the same exact front-facing camera system as the iPhone 10s and 10s max and in iOS 12.1, which is available at the time of making this review Apple fixed some of that smoothing effect when taking a front-facing selfie shot, and you also get portrait mode on the front-facing camera as well, and because it uses the true death for face ID, you do get this studio. Lighting effects that aren't found on the rear facing camera overall I, like the shots that come out of the front facing camera on the iPhone 10 are look perfect, and the portrait mode looks perfect as well, and the smart HDR system finds its way there too. So if you get a portrait mode shot with a lot of sunlight in the background, if you have a Sun directly in the picture, you can still see the picture.

It doesn't blow it out at all, and you still get that nice. Crisp, blue sky, I love the color on the iPhone 10, our camera, I love the dynamic range on it overall, just a really solid camera, a pretty big jump up in the camera from the iPhone 10, where the iPhone 10 would get a lot of these shots wrong. Now, although a lot of people love that pixel 3 camerae, what they don't talk about with the iPhone 10, our camera is that you get excellent video quality in it as well. I think the iPhone 10 are, and the iPhone 10s take some of the best video out there available in a smartphone. Today, you can do recording options from 4k to 24 frames per second to 30 frames per second, all the way up to 4k 60 frames per second, you can even toggle a new mode where, if you're on 30 frames per second, and you're in a low light situation, the iPhone will automatically toggle the frame rate to 24 frames per second to capture.

More lighting also get that enhanced stereo sound when you're recording video just take a look at some sample.4K video I shot on the iPhone 10, our I think it looks really, really good as a perfect job with the exposure in the sky. Much like the smart HDR does a perfect job, with the audio recording and overall, just produces a really vibrant and crisp image with that 4k camera. Now, before I finish, this review I just wanted to do some quick recap of iOS 12. Overall iOS 12 is really optimized for this phone I haven't been noticed. Any stuttering lags too many bugs any really consistent frame drops or anything like that really enjoying the group.

Two notifications at Apple brought to us twelve. So now it groups up all the notifications and, of course, with face ID. You can hide those notifications until you're ready to look at them all so happy to see. Group FaceTime finally make its way to iOS 12.1 before I. Did this review and I did a grouped FaceTime call and I really enjoyed that experience? Video quality was excellent on it.

Everyone was super crisp and clear, and it's really nice to finally be able to FaceTime in groups, and you can get up to 32 people which is really cool, also do an emoji in group, FaceTime and, of course, in messages like normal, not a feature I'm using a ton. I know people like an emoji sometimes, but for me, it is a thing I have to remember to use, but when I do use it I do find it fun, especially when I'm using it with my nephews. They really do like seeing me as a fox or a robot or as the poop emoji also airplay.2 is now on this, and I've been using that to play a lot of music on various devices and sync it up between my home pod and other speakers inside the home screen time on iOS 12 I'm, really not a fan of them haven't been using it. It hasn't been helping me out at all, but overall iOS 12 is really nice, and the software does perform really well. Ok, so you're, probably wondering where the conclusion is being drawn with the iPhone 10 are, especially as it relates to the iPhone 10s and iPhone 10s max I can say this with 100% certainty that if I was picking between the iPhone, 10s and iPhone 10 are I would choose the iPhone.10 are hands-down I, really like the bigger screen size of it, I don't mind losing that second camera, especially after I, found out that the portrait mode is better in some instances on the iPhone.10 are I, don't think you're losing that much screen quality and to get the 128 gigabyte version for $800 compared to the 64 gigabyte version for $1000 on the iPhone, 10s I think it's a no-brainer. You should definitely pick the iPhone 10 are now where I'm struggling with this is between the iPhone.10 are iPhone 10s max before I finish. This review I want it to go back to the iPhone tennis max, just to make sure my opinions on the iPhone 10 are been right, and I think they mostly where I really do enjoy.

The big screen of the iPhone 10s max I do like having the biggest screen possible, but it is a little unwieldy at times and the iPhone 10 R does fit that sweet spot of having a big screen phone, but in a body that's still manageable to hold screen quality differences really didn't bother me all too much going from the iPhone 10s max to the iPhone 10 honor and if I didn't already purchase the iPhone 10s max I'm, pretty confident that if I had to choose today, if both of these phones were not available to me, if I was a customer, the average customer, like you guys, walking into a store and I had to choose between the $800 128 gigabyte, iPhone 10 R and the $1,250 iPhone Menace max for 256 gigabytes. I would be walking out with this guy. The iPhone 10 R, which really leads me to my conclusion that the iPhone 10 R is probably one of the best phones that Apple has ever made getting the same exact user experience that I loved on the iPhone 10 in a cheaper form. Factor that doesn't really sacrifice too many things to achieve this goal and to me, I consider it the best phone considering it is a lower price point than both the 10s and 10s Max and for the amount of features you're getting in this you're, getting the most powerful smartphone. You can possibly buy you're getting one of the best cameras on a smartphone and the best camera for video quality, the sacrifices it makes to achieve this lower cost like the LCD screen, a single lens camera.

The lack of 3d touch aren't major dealbreakers to me between the price point between the specs that you're getting with this phone between the cool colors on it. Just everything this whole package together makes me say that this phone, the iPhone 10 R, is the best phone that Apple has ever made okay guys and that does it for this I phone 10, our review I think it's going to be a long one by the time.
